PUBLISHING INFORMATION

Start by Doing…Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

How many of you have come to a Chamber Networking Breakfast, Business After Hours, or a Ribbon Cutting and you left thinking... I didn’t make a single NEW contact? Then you are left with no other means of getting your business and name in the hands of the members. How many of you have come to a Chamber breakfast, after hours, ribbon cutting and you left thinking... I didn’t make a single

NEW contact? Are you networking all wrong? By Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of network-

ing is:

networking:The exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions; specifically : the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/networking

This next year, I want you to be overwhelmed with refer-rals. It can happen. It takes ONE step... the one giant leap that takes you outside your comfort zone. When you arrive at the breakfast next month, I want you to try and sit at a table with someone that you don’t know or already do business with. Come prepared with a handful of business cards to give out. At the breakfast enjoy getting to know the people that sit at your table. Ask them: Who do they work for? What is their profession? How can I help them in their business? Don’t forget to give them your business card and offer your services.

After the breakfast, call the program sponsor to thank them for sponsoring. This is a great opportunity to introduce your-self and your business to them.

Did you know that the Ambassadors do lunch EVERY MONTH? Believe it or not, you are an Ambassador of the Chamber of Commerce. So step out of that comfort zone and join the Ambassador committee for lunch.

Another avenue to take when building your network, is to send a “get to know you card” to a member. Have you ever really looked at the Chamber Focus newspaper? It is a gold mine of networking referrals and teammates. We have renewal members and new members all listed out for you. Have you taken full advantage of the information that has been provided to you on this page?

These are all things that can help you build your team. Your network of support. After all... networking the right way... builds your net-worth. Not only will you learn to get out of your comfort zone, you will learn that someone sitting very close to you just might be able to help you.

Get to know the members around you.

I have been involved with the Chamber for about six years now. I can still remember my first breakfast… I didn’t know very many people at all! I got something to eat, sat down, and waited for the program to start. I didn’t talk to anyone at my table, I just sat qui-etly and listened to what all of the speakers had to say. When it was time for the committee reports, Katie Sharon (BBVA Compass) had the microphone and she said, “The best way to get involved is to join a committee!” At that time I didn’t even know the Chamber had different committees, so I really tried to listen as each of the Chairs made their announcements. The one that sounded most

interesting to me at that time was the PILOT committee- Professional Inspired Leaders of Tomorrow! Sounds exciting right?! Especially to a twenty-something year old, who didn’t know anyone yet, but wanted a network of business professionals to grow with. A few weeks later I attended my first meeting and loved it. Some of the people there had been attending for years and some were new like me. It wasn’t scary or intimidat-ing at all. They welcomed me with open arms. I attended every monthly meeting and a year later I was asked to Chair that committee. Since then I’ve had the privilege of chairing several different committees and serving on the Board of Directors.

The reason I’m telling you all of this is because I am proof that it works. If you really want to get involved and you’re not sure how, join a committee. Any committee that sounds interesting to you. Start small and get to know the people around you. Maybe one day you can chair a committee? Or be on the Board? The amount of time

that you dedicate is completely up to you. When you start, you will see your list of professional contacts start to grow almost immediately. Need a lawyer? Or an A/C repair man? Some pet supplies? A loan for your growing business? Your Chamber has them all within your reach.

You might remember that in last month’s Focus article I challenged everyone to try something new. Well, I took my own advice. The one committee that I’ve never really participated in is the Military Affairs Committee (or MAC for short). I’ve contacted the Chamber office to let them know I’d like to join, (MAC is the only Chamber com-mittee that collects dues annually) and I’ll be attending my first meeting this month! They have a reputation for having truly dedicated members, and the new Chair is my dear friend, Marian McBryde (Okaloosa Title and Abstract). I can’t wait!

I hope to see you soon!

When I ask kids, “Where does your food come from?” the answer I most often receive is “the grocery store”. In our culture, there is a great disconnect between the farmer and the consumer. Most consumers don’t understand what goes into growing their food.

Farmers today have so much to juggle and so many things to consider. You don’t just put a seed in the ground and hope for the best. So many sciences play a part in this thing we call agriculture. We rely on soil scientists, pathologist (for plant diseases), entomologists (for insects), wildlife biologists, agronomists, weed scientists, agricultural engineers, animal scientists, and the list could go on.

So, where does your food come from? It starts out with a farmer who is trying to support their family by doing something they love to do. That farmer spends countless hours preparing the fields and caring for

the land. They choose what to grow that season and prepare the soil accordingly. They also must consider what pests they will be combatting. Insects, diseases, weeds and wildlife all can wreak havoc on a crop. The farmers attempt to protect their crops without causing harm to the environment or to the consumer.

In my opinion, farmers have one of the toughest jobs in our country today. Just think, where would we be if there were no farmers? What would we eat? Where would our clothes come from?

We need to tell the story of farmers and of where our food comes from. The Okaloosa County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee is committed to telling this story. We will be telling this story to school kids from all over the c ounty this October. If you would like to help us tell this story, you can help either by volunteering to help with the field trips, by financially

supporting the field trips and by letting teachers know that this opportunity is available to them.

Contact Molly Huffman at the Okaloosa County Farm Bureau office 850-682-3536, via email [email protected] or on her cell 850-865-0184.

We have all shopped for bikes only to have found the right one we like with the wrong seat. Many do not fully understand the role a seat plays on the bike and will quickly judge a seat by its look. The seat is meant to distribute the rider’s weight while reducing chaffing and maximizing performance. Not all saddles are equal as our sit bones are all spaced differently, a great saddle for one person can be bad for another. Seats are made in many sizes and shapes with different amount of paddings to fit the intended purpose. Let’s take a look at the typical saddles you may find at our bike shop and explain their purpose.

THE CRUISER SEATBig with lots of cushion, many like

this just because it looks comfortable, and it is, but it is designed for short rides while seated completely upright. If your intention is to truly work up a sweat this cushion may cause tremendous friction leading to chafing. This seat is found on cruiser bikes as you would not typically use this bike for working up a sweat.

THE HYBRID SEATBikes with this seat may have you

seated with a slight lean forward but not fully tucked in an aero position like a road bike. Your weight is now shifted

slightly and padding the tail bone will vary. The nose is also narrow to help reduce friction. This saddle may be found on bikes such as Hybrids or Mountain bikes.

THE RACE SEATWell most refer to this as a rac-

ing seat. This is meant to be ridden for hours they do have minimal padding and the seat may flex to provide comfort. At long distances or numerous hours on the seat, padding and flex may create friction leading to discomfort and degrading performance. These saddles are usually aided in comfort by the use of cycling shorts which are padded.

PROPER ADJUSTMENT GOES A LONG WAYWhile most people typically run to the store to find

the softest seat. A seat that is not properly adjusted will also cause problems. So before you run to the store follow these tips first.

Ensure your seat post is NOT set too high, where your knees are locked out at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Check that the nose of the seat is NOT pointed to high that it causes numbness or pointed to low that you feel like you are sliding off the seat.

Always start adjustments with your seat as close to level as possible then make adjustments minor adjust-ments up or down.

Adjust your seat forward or rearward just a few mil-limeters at a time.

SUGGESTIONSWhen shopping for a bike do not look for the softest

seat. First find the right bike for the intended purpose. Remember that if you have not ridden a bike in a long time that your bottom may be slightly sore, just like if you have not ran in a long time your legs will also be sore. Ensure the seat is in a good position and make adjustments as necessary.

At Chained Concepts Bicycle Shop we ensure our bikes have the saddles in a neutral position and we will make adjustments as necessary to ensure maximum enjoyment.

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR

w w w . l e e b u i c k g m c . c o m

THIS SPACE WAS GRACIOUSLY DONATED BY LEE BUICK GMC.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL???

Well, our students and fans at Crestview High School certainly are ready!  Our football team has been conditioning all summer and start regular season practice at 8am on Monday, August 1st. Our CHS Dazzlers, cheerleaders, Big Red Machine, volleyball team, basketball team, baseball team, cross country and even Dog Pound have been putting in the hours as well.

We kick off the school year on August 10th and we kick off our football season on Friday night, August 12th with our community wide event—Meet the Bulldogs.  CHS and Lee Buick GMC began partnering 9 years ago when Roger Berry was Quarterback Club President and the tradition continues!  Our entire community looks forward to our sneak peak of the upcoming season.   CHS will showcase DMS/Pryor/SRMS scrimmages, their dancers and cheerleaders will perform during their games, then CHS 9th grade and JV teams will play and our cheerleaders and dancers will perform as well.  The BIG RED MACHINE will take the field that night and ‘wow’ us with their awesomeness!  CAYA and Crestview City League players will be introduced on the Bulldog field that night, too!

The tradition continues at 6p at Jack Foster Stadium!

Thank you Lee Buick GMC for all you do for the athletes and students at Crestview High School!
