Americans can rarely pick up a newspaper without reading about the consequences of alcoholism. This disease is one of the major problems in today’s society. The effects of this disease can be physical, psychological, and economic.

Body Paragraph 1

The first effects of alcoholism are physical and are the most important because these can cause death. For example, alcoholism causes cancer in the stomach, kidneys, and liver. Also, alcohol alters the digestion of nutrients that the body needs to stay healthy. Alcoholism causes severe damage in the neurons, so it creates alterations in the body movements, loss of appetite, and depression. There are other effects in the body like cirrhosis of the liver. All these physical consequences could cause death as an abuser drinks alcohol over time.

Body Paragraph 2

The second effects caused by alcoholism are psychological. At the beginning, alcohol makes the abuser feel relaxed, but if drinking in excess increases anxiety and causes depression. The alcoholic does not associate his drinking with these problems. It can also cause family and legal problems, violence, changes of behavior and even suicide, among other brain related affects. Alcohol is very powerful and can alter many normal behaviors and moods.

Body Paragraph 3

The third effects of alcoholism are economic. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, dependence can cost an estimated $98 billion in America each year. This includes purchase, hospitalizations, rehabs and other facilities. Alcohol is not cheap and can cost a habitual drinker a large part of his weekly paycheck which will lead to the family suffering. People do not think about the cost and may spend money they cannot afford when they are drunk.

Conclusion Paragraph

In conclusion, alcohol alters the brain, muscles, digestion process, and leads to other disorders that affect health. It also can cause depression or changes in behavior that result in problems with family and friends. Besides, it will leave the drinker in poverty because it costs so much, so why drink it? The effects of alcoholism, which are physical, psychological, and economic can cause many problems that affect an abuser’s life in all aspects.
