XIV Domenica del Tempo Ordinario: Nel Vangelo gli abitanti di Nazaret rifiutano di riconoscere in Gesù Cristo il Messia atteso: l’incredulità, l’indiferenza, l’ostilità di fronte alla Parola, la presa di posizioni appartengono al mistero della libertà umana. Più di cinquant’anni fa, mentre il mondo vacillava sull’orlo di una crisi nucleare, il santo Papa Giovanni XXIII scrisse un’Enciclica con la quale non si limitò solamente a respingere la guerra, bensì volle trasmettere una proposta di pace. Diresse il suo messaggio Pacem in terris a tutto il “mondo cattolico”, ma aggiungeva «nonché a tutti gli uomini di buona volontà». Adesso, di fronte al deterioramento globale dell’ambiente, voglio rivolgermi a ogni persona che abita questo pianeta. Nella mia Esortazione Evangelii gaudium, ho scritto ai membri della Chiesa per mobilitare un processo di riforma missionaria ancora da compiere. In questa Enciclica, mi propongo specialmente di entrare in dialogo con tutti riguardo alla nostra casa comune.

4. Otto anni dopo la Pacem in terris, nel 1971, il beato Papa Paolo VI si riferì alla problematica ecologica, presentandola come una crisi che è «una conseguenza drammatica» dell’attività incontrollata dell’essere umano: «Attraverso uno sfruttamento sconsiderato della natura, egli rischia di distruggerla e di essere a sua volta vittima di siffatta degradazione».2 Parlò anche alla FAO della possibilità, «sotto l’effetto di contraccolpi della civiltà industriale, di [...] una vera catastrofe ecologica», sottolineando «l’urgenza e la necessità di un mutamento radicale nella condotta dell’umanità»...

XIV Sunday in O. T: God is infinitely good and all his works are good. Yet no one can escape the experience of suffering… Where does evil come from? I sought whence evil comes from and there was no solution, said St Augustine, and his own painful quest would only be resolved by his conversion to the Living God. We must therefore approach the question for the origin of evil by fixing the eyes of faith on him who alone is its conqueror (CCC, 385).
