TODAY’S WORSHIP NOTES

For the past four weeks, we have enjoyed Sharon's

sermon series on Barbara Brown Taylor's Learn-

ing to Walk in the Dark. Today we return to our

use of the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) for

our scripture readings. The practice of having spe-

cific texts for a specific day began as early as the

fourth century and continues in many denomina-

tions. Over the years there have been different

versions of lectionaries; most today use the RCL.

Each Sunday, there are readings from the Old Tes-

tament, Psalms, New Testament, and Gospel, in a

continuous three-year cycle. We are in Year A,

which focuses on the Gospel of Matthew.

We welcome Rev. Marvin Randolph as our guest

preacher this morning. He and his wife Anna are

regular attendees here at First Presbyterian and are

the parents of Donna Hoppestad. Marvin is from

Norfolk, Va., and is a retired Presbyterian minis-

ter. In his ministry he has served churches in

Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Pastor Sharon's series of four "Treasures of Dark-

ness" sermons in July on Barbara Brown Taylor's

latest book, "Learning To Walk in the Dark," can

be heard on YouTube through FPC's website
