12 th Sunday after Pentecost Collect of the Day

Almighty God, we are taught by your word that all our

doings without love are worth nothing. Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue; through

Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Epistle

Romans 12: 1-8

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of

God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—which is your spiritual worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this

world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do

not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in

accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Just as each of us has one body with many

members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one

body, and each member belongs to all the others. We

have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to your faith; if it is serving, then let him serve; if it is

teaching, then let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him

encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others,

then let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it

cheerfully.

Gospel

Matthew 16:13-20

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he

asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man

is?”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say

Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I

am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of

the living God.”

Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for

this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in

heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this

rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will

not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom

of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in

heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed

in heaven.” Then he warned his disciples not to tell

anyone that he was the Christ.
