The Greater DentonArts Council cele-brates a month of

installation today and Fridaywith “Enough Room,” anarts showcase at the Centerfor the Visual Arts.

Artists from Denton,Dallas and Fort Worth havebeen building installations —some abstract, some cheekyand funny — in the MeadowsGallery at the arts center. Allof the installations play withthe idea of the rooms we live, work and have fun in. Somerooms are more intimate, others are communal.

Artists built their installa-

tions before and during pub-lic viewings from Aug. 12through Wednesday. Theprojects lead up to twoshowcase nights, which run8 to 11 p.m. today and Fridayin the gallery. Hot Box Pizzasupplies the food and FortWorth’s Rahr Brewery willhave free beer.

Big Rig Dance Collective,a Texas project with a lot ofDenton involvement, willlend dance and performanceart during the showcases.Durham, N.C., choreogra-pher Stafford C. Berry Jr.will be featured during theshowcase.

The event is free, butattendees will be able toshop for art. For more infor-mation, call the arts councilat 940-382-2787.

Out of the gate, Denton’sTrebuchet seems like aprogressive rock outfit

that capitalizes on heavy-handed guitar work and jackhammer-strength drums.

But then the quintet addsthe sounds of woodwinds andspacey percussion into the mix, upsetting expectations a bit.

Frontman Justin Hawkinsbelts out a hard rock tenor, butturns on the kind of screamthat would do a Jesus ChristSuperstar-era Ted Neeleyproud.

Trebuchet has been giggingin Denton for a long while, butheld off on recording until ithad two discs’ worth of musicfor its 2009 debut, Bear andthe Moon. The album titleseems tailor-made for aMidlake side project, but thetracks are deep, dark andsteely. The lyrics are more psy-chological than introspective. In all, the album feels artisti-cally fleshed out by a group ofmusicians who give detailstheir due.

The band plays at Denton’shard rock headquarters, theBoiler Room, on Friday night.

Trebuchet is: BobbyLotfipour on drums; John Yetton bass; Justin Hawkins onvocals and guitars; DustinFleming on guitars and key-boards; and Keith Naylor onguitars and vocals.

but Spune honors Denton bygiving it a chunk of the lineup, which includes Spooky Folk,Final Club, Old Snack, Baruchthe Scribe, Goldilocks and theRock, and Land Mammals.

To hear a definitive Dentonact in that hefty lineup, bethere in time for Baruch theScribe.

The local quartet hasshrugged off its folksy historyand is in the here and now. If

ever there was a band thatexemplified the ambient musicof Denton, Baruch the Scribe isit. Concocting spacious, mean-dering tunes out of guitar, bass, chimes and percussion, toname a few instruments, theband merges simple soundswith rich, textured intent.

The band has been noted forcollecting “found sounds,”environmental and coinciden-tal sounds that are pulled like

taffy through software pro-grams that give them new con-text. A drop of water takes onthe depth of a timpani drum,or footfalls on gravel become ashimmer of sound off a dis-torted guitar.

Something else to appreci-ate about the crew: The grouphas been open about the soul-ful depths it reaches for in itsmusic, without wringing itsaudience out for a religiousconversion.

Baruch the Scribe is:Judson Valdez, Kristen Bryant,Travis Oliver and ChanceMaggard.

Sounds like: some sinnersmet up in a neglected cathe-dral to invent their own stepsto recovery.

Doubter no morePriest possessedby authentic terrorin clever ‘Exorcism’

By Todd JorgensonFilm Critic

Don’t roll your eyes. TheLast Exorcism is morethan the latest low-

budget horror flick to roll offthe assembly line.

A refreshing change of pacethat combines elements ofgenre pioneers such asRosemary’s Baby and The BlairWitch Project, it’s a shrewd andsuspenseful effort that isn’tderailed by an almost completelack of narrative logic.

Using a mock-documentarystyle, the film is centered onCotton (Patrick Fabian), acharismatic Texas priest whohas made a career out of per-forming exorcisms withoutbelieving in them. In otherwords, he puts on a show, spouts some religious teachings

and persuades the patient thatthe demons no longer exist. Then he collects the money.

Before he retires, he agrees totake on the case of a Louisianaman convinced that his teenagedaughter (Ashley Bell) is pos-sessed without having anydirect evidence. Cotton agreesto let a film crew tag along forposterity, thinking it will be aneasy job. But once he meets thegirl, he becomes entangled in athreatening mess of oddball

behavior and unexplained phe-nomena that challenge his ownbeliefs.

The film benefits from a castof unknowns and a straightfor-ward style (using hand-heldcameras within a documentaryframework) that is nothing newthese days but still generates anappropriately creepy mood.

Director Daniel Stammachieves a clever balancebetween mocking formulasabout demonic possession andreligious fundamentalismwhile still delivering some ofthe cheap thrills that audienceswill expect. In other words, ithas mainstream appeal with-out sacrificing its edge.

Of course, it’s worth pointingout that the script indulgesbroad Cajun stereotypes anddoesn’t make a lick of sense

when you stop to think about it.The priest and the filmmakerlack simple common sense(why don’t they just leave?) andthe girl’s erratic behavior is ran-dom at best.

But the film’s strength lies inits protagonist, well-played byveteran character actor Fabian. He’s a charlatan who doesn’tbelieve what he’s preaching andis perfectly open to admittingthat, not that his customerswould care anyway.

In turning some of those pre-conceived notions on their col-lective head, the film doesn’ttake itself too seriously and be-comes more effective as a result.

COVER STORY

Courtesy photoMark Chesnutt will perform at the North

Texas State Fair and Rodeo on Saturday.

By Ellen Ritscher SackettStaff Writer

When country singer MarkChesnutt takes the BudweiserStage on Saturday night at the

North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, he’llhave 20 years of hits from which to pick.

“It’s been a long run, you know, and I’m realthankful for that,” the Beaumont native said, referring to a career that took off after the 1990release of Too Cold at Home, the first albumthat brought him acclaim.

Chesnutt grew up playing classic country inhonky-tonks as a teenager before he made it

to Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. Now hehas 14 studio albums to his credit, with

four platinum records and five certi-fied gold. From those albums, he’shad 14 No. 1 singles and 23 top-10singles. Without question, theman’s had enough chart-toppers tofill an evening and then some.

On his latest album, Outlaw,Chesnutt covered songs madefamous by the original outlawsfrom the 1970s — includingWaylon Jennings, Willie Nelson,Hank Williams Jr., KrisKristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker,

David Allan Coe and Johnny Cash. “They were having hit records …

doing music that was against the lawsof the Nashville establishment, you

know? They were going in and singing thesongs they wanted to sing and not whatthey were told to sing, and they wereusing their own musicians and doing ittheir way. And that’s what made themoutlaws, ’cause they pissed everybody offin Nashville,” Chesnutt said. “I don’t think

See CHESNUTT on 10

Page 10: August 26 Denton Time 2010

I’ve done enough to be alignedwith those guys, but it’s flatter-ing when I’m compared.”

There are some striking sim-ilarities.

“I’ve had kind of a toughtime, you know, with Nashvillein the last 10 years or so,”Chesnutt said last week by tele-phone from Beaumont. “Thebusiness changed, and all of asudden it seemed like it didn’tmatter that I had several plat-inum albums and a bunch ofNo. 1s — that didn’t matter atall. All of a sudden, I had toprove myself all over again oncethe business changed, becausewhen I came in, it was country, you know — the more countryyou were the better. Then itturned into a pop kind of thing, and everybody wanted to berock stars, flying around on thestage. … Next thing you know, Ifeel like I’m kind of lost in thepile. They wanted me to do allthat, and I didn’t do it.

“I stuck to my guns and I didwhat I wanted to do, and I stilldo that. I guess you could saythat sometimes I make peoplemad because I won’t give inand do things their way, butI’ve always been this way.

“In the music business, there’s always experts,” Ches-nutt said. “You get signed to amajor label deal, and the firstthing they want to do after youhave a lot of success is changeyou. They all of a sudden [say],‘So and so just had a triple-plat-inum album with this kind ofmusic, so this is what we wantyou to do now.’ That’s exactly

how it works,” he said with alaugh.

“I say, ‘Why do I have to dothat?’ I’m having success with‘Bubba Shot the Jukebox’ and‘Too Cold at Home’ and thingslike that. And the next thingyou know, they wanted me torecord pop songs. I got thesame old spiel: ‘Ah, well youknow, business is changing, radio is changing, the demo-graphics are changing,’ and,” hepauses, “I didn’t agree. I guessI’ll probably never have anoth-er chance in Nashville like Ihad before, and I hate that.

“That’s where the musicbusiness is, country music any-way. Once you get out of yourteens or your 20s, it gets a littleharder on us guys.”

Outlaw, which hit the storesin June, was recorded inBurbank, Calif., rather thanNashville or Texas, at the homestudio of Pete Anderson, whoplayed all of the guitar and bassparts.

“When I got there back inDecember, I was just there todo track vocals, which is notwhat you keep, you know; it’sjust to help build the rest of thetracks,” Chesnutt said. “But we

plenty of solid laughs to be had as

long as you don’t walk in expecting

the next Pixar extravaganza. Rated

PG, 95 minutes. — T.J.

Eat Pray Love (1/2) We can all

breathe easier now because Julia

Roberts has found eternal happiness,

true bliss and bodily harmony in Eat

Pray Love, the new mind-bogglingly

insipid film from director Ryan

Murphy, based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s

autobiography. In only her second

starring role of the last six years,

America’s Sweetheart plays author

Gilbert, as she travels to Italy, India

and Bali to find herself after a failed

marriage to one man (Billy Crudup)

and subsequent relationship with

another (James Franco). Mind-numb-

ingly simplistic, but with plenty of

pretty scenery. Rated PG-13, 135

minutes. — B.A.

The Expendables (1/2) Brawn

dominates brains in this formulaic

testosterone fest noteworthy for its

ensemble of erstwhile action-hero

types including Sylvester Stallone

(who also co-wrote and directed),

Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason

Statham, Mickey Rourke and others,

including a couple of surprise

cameos. The plot involves a group of

assassins on a secret yet dangerous

CIA mission in South America, but

the story takes a clear backseat to

shootouts and explosions that grow

tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. —

T.J.

Get Low () Low-key charac-

ter piece elevated by a superb lead

performance from Robert Duvall,

playing a hermit who emerges from a

life in the Tennessee woods with a

wish to arrange a living funeral so he

can exorcise demons from his past.

The script (remarkably based on a

true story) is thin on its own, but

director Aaron Schneider smartly lets

his actors — including Bill Murray,

Sissy Spacek and Lucas Black — take

command. The result is deliberately

paced but ultimately poignant. Rated

PG-13, 102 minutes. — T.J.

Nanny McPhee Returns ()

Emma Thompson returns in the title

role, and supplies the screenplay, for

this sequel to the 2005 original

based on Christianna Brand’s charac-

ters. A mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in

World War II tends to her three chil-

dren and a visiting niece and nephew

while the father is at war. Enter

Nanny McPhee, who makes every-

thing right. Director Susanna White

aims directly at kids with broad

humor and plenty of cuddly anima-

tronic animals. Rated PG, 108 min-

utes. — B.A.

The Other Guys A detective more

interested in paperwork (Will Ferrell)

and a street-tough cop (Mark

Wahlberg) are partnered up. With

Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne

Johnson. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes.

— The Associated Press

Piranha 3D Spring break turns gory

when an underground tremor releas-

es hundreds of prehistoric, carnivo-

rous fish into Lake Victoria, a popular

waterside resort. With Elisabeth

Shue, Ving Rhames and Jerry

O’Connell. Rated R, 89 minutes.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ()

This outrageously high-energy come-

dy, based on the series of graphic

novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has a

visual style that’s fearless if nothing

else. British director Edgar Wright

(Shaun of the Dead) swings for the

fences, even if he whiffs. Scott

(Michael Cera) is a quirky musician

trying to get over a bad breakup

when he meets a new girl (Mary

Elizabeth Winstead), whom he must

win over by defeating her seven ex-

boyfriends in a series of video game

showdowns. The story and actors

seem an afterthought to the frenetic

camerawork and stylistic trickery.

Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — T.J.

Step Up 3D Street dancers and a

college freshman square off in a

competition against world-class hip-

hop dancers. Rated PG-13, 107 min-

utes. — AP

The Switch Kassie (Jennifer Aniston)

is a single woman who, despite her

neurotic best friend Wally’s (Jason

Bateman) objections, decides it’s

time to have a baby with a little help

from a charming sperm donor

(Patrick Wilson). Unbeknownst to

her, Wally switches the preferred

sample for his own. Rated PG-13, 101

minutes.
