Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.” Father Edward C. Hathaway, Rector

Dear Parishioners of the Basilica of Saint Mary, Earlier this summer, I started my new role as the principal of our parish school. The incredibly warm welcome from the parish and school staff has already made this community feel like home. My summer has been mostly spent diving into my position with the school, but my wife and I also have been able to get to know and enjoy much of what Old Town Alexandria has to offer. I am eager to welcome all of our students back to school tomorrow on their first day of class for the 2019-2020 school year. A school feels a bit empty without the students in the classrooms and halls, so I am excited to see it filled again. This is a significant time for our parish as we continue to commemorate our school’s 150th anniversary. I can’t wait to celebrate it with you at our Alumni and Family Weekend on October 18 through 20. Learning about our rich Saint Mary’s history and meeting the people who have helped create it has inspired me as I begin to lead the Basilica School of Saint Mary into the future. You will have the opportunity to learn more about the tremendous things happening at our school in upcoming bulletins during a monthly news highlight series. Our spiritual theme for this upcoming school year is “We Walk With God.” It will be a daily reminder the Lord is always with us and guiding everything that we do. Our priests, teachers, staff and I look forward continuing our school’s mission to lead our students to Christ. God bless, Daniel V. Cinalli Principal, The Basilica School of Saint Mary

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR THE 150TH TIME! Our award-winning Basilica School of Saint Mary, founded in 1869, celebrates its 150th anniversary this year — a century-and-a-half of excellence in Catholic education! A weekend of celebratory events is planned for October 18-20. (Go to https://www.smsva.org/about-sms/celebrating-150-years-of-catholic-education for additional details.) Are you an alumnus of Saint Mary school? If so, please register at https://www.smsva.org/form-pages/alumni-registration so we can keep in touch. Tomorrow, Monday, August 26, is the first day of classes for the upcoming school year. A warm welcome to the students, their families – especially new school families — and our dedicated teachers and staff. Greeting students on their first day will be the new school principal, Mr. Dan Cinalli. (Parishioners and school families are invited to meet him at a reception on Sunday, September 8, 6 to 8 p.m., in the Lyceum auditorium, 313 Duke Street.) Principal Cinalli has graciously written the following message to inaugurate the school year.

Are you, or someone you know, interested in becom-ing Catholic? Are you an adult who was baptized Catholic as a child but have

not yet celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist (First Holy Communion)? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) offers an opportunity to meet in a small group to learn more about our Catholic faith. Classes begin September 16 and focus on the teachings and tradition of the Catholic Church, preparing individuals to celebrate the Sacra-ments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are invited to participate in the RCIA process here at the Basilica, sharing your ques-tions, insights and faith story in a welcoming setting. If you know a child over age seven who has not been baptized, there also are separate preparatory sessions for unbaptized children or youth.

Liturgical Calendar This Week August 26 — Saint Monica. Born in Tagaste in Roman Africa. After 30 years of prayer, she obtained the conver-sion of her pagan husband; under the guidance of Saint Ambrose, she also won the conversion of her eldest son, Augustine. Patron of mothers. Died in 387. August 28 — Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. After a dissolute life, he received bap-tism at the age of 33 from Saint Ambrose. Elected bishop of Hippo Regius. Most noted for his Confessions and City of God. More than 500 homilies survive. Considered a founder of monastic life in the West, his rule is observed by some 100 religious communities today. One of four great doctors of the Latin Church; called the “Doctor of Grace.” Died in 430 in Hippo. August 29 — The Passion of Saint John the Baptist. The Church celebrated the earthly birthday of Saint John the Baptist on June 24 and on August 29 marks the anni-versary of his martyrdom. Besides Our Lord and Our La-dy, John the Baptist is the only one whose birth AND death are celebrated. The feast originates in the celebra-tion of the dedication, perhaps on this day, of the Church of Saint John at Sebaste (Samaria) where, according to tradition, John the Baptist was buried by his disciples.

Wherever you are in your spir-itual life, Jesus Christ wants to encounter you right there and take you further. That Man Is You (TMIY) is a men's group that meets every Saturday morning and has helped thousands of men across the country become better sons, fathers, husbands and friends. We start again on September 14 with an exciting program designed for both newcomers and past partici-pants. Information/signup tables will be setup for the September 7-8 weekend Masses. If you'd like to learn more now, please call Wayne Cimons at 703.963.5412.
