We also received the $5,000 check from the city of Jacksonville for the grant to improve our playground. We are also looking at options such as clearance bars and electronic warning devices to protect our Hodges gate portico from future damage. In addition to the con- cern for damage to our buildings and the vehicles in- volved, continued collisions could become costly to the community with regard to our insurance premiums. We continue the upfront work on the next phase of pav- ing. The board will host a workshop in the next few months, most likely via Zoom video conferencing, to pro- vide information and also receive community feedback. We are exploring the possibility of paving two sections at the same time (phase 2 and 3). Our estimates show that the funds are available in the reserve fund. We are hopeful that this should allow for significant savings due to economies of scale for the paving contractor. (This article continues on page 3)

From the Board

Hello Neighbors,

We have a lot to update you on this month and will start

with COVID-19. Our status remains the same as last

month. All of our sports recreation facilities and play-

ground remain open. However, we continue to monitor

guidance from the governor and our mayor regarding

the use of community recreation facilities. At the pre-

sent time we are not accepting future reservations for

the clubhouse. Also, The Woods office door will be

locked during business hours. Please conduct as much

business as possible electronically. If you need to con-

tact the office in person, please knock on the door and

the staff will assist you, working as much as possible

though the door.

Our mid-year financial update shows The Woods financ-

es are sound. Our reserve fund is properly funded and

we are operating within our 2020 budget. In fact,

through July, we have managed to operate below our

budgeted expenses resulting in a surplus of $54,000.

The delinquencies in our monthly assessments are be-

low the levels of the first quarter of 2020 before COVID-

19, and also slightly below July 2019. We also received

the $5,000 check from the city of Jacksonville for the

grant to improve our playground. We are pleased to re-

port these results to you and thank everyone that hon-

ors their financial obligation to the community and we

also thank all those involved in being good stewards of

our funds.

You may have noticed the center island and three plant-

er islands have been cleared at the Hodges entrance.

We are in the process of a complete re-landscaping of

this area and look forward to the completion of this

beautification effort.

As we advised in a recent email to all of our members

signed up in thewoodscommunity.com, our Atlantic gate

portico was badly damaged after being struck by a com-

mercial vehicle. The visitor lane is closed until repairs

can be made. We received an assessment from the

construction company that built the building. The struc-

tural damage is so significant that the portico needs to

be removed and rebuilt. We are currently working

through the insurance process.

Our guardhouse porticos have been struck four times in

the last 24 months. While nothing has been voted upon

yet, the board is exploring changing the design of the

Atlantic gate portico to virtually eliminate the incidents

of damage. The first option we are looking at is signifi-

cantly raising the height of the portico. Other options

include removing the portico completely if the raised

roof design is not visually appealing.

We are also looking at options such as clearance bars

and electronic warning devices to protect our Hodges

gate portico from future damage. In addition to the con-

cern for damage to our buildings and the vehicles in-

volved, continued collisions could become costly to the

community with regard to our insurance premiums.

We continue the upfront work on the next phase of pav-

ing. The board will host a workshop in the next few

months, most likely via Zoom video conferencing, to pro-

vide information and also receive community feedback.

We are exploring the possibility of paving two sections at

the same time (phase 2 and 3). Our estimates show

that the funds are available in the reserve fund. We are

hopeful that this should allow for significant savings due

to economies of scale for the paving contractor.

Women of the Woods

Our Women of The Woods spring meetings were cancelled for the protection of our members from poten-

tial spread of the Coronavirus. We will be meeting again in September if opening of businesses and

meetings prove successful. The April Jewelry Exchange meeting (hosted by Lin Gedert and Madeline

Osiecki) has been rescheduled for September 17, 2020, and will be our first meeting of the new year.

Below are the scheduled meetings for next year. We are asking for volunteer hostesses for the three

months that are still open. Thanks to Peggy Brust for volunteering for the November meeting!!!! If any-

one is interested in signing up for November with Peggy, just let me know. If you and a friend are willing

to take a month for your program, please let me know. You don't even have to commit to what your pro-

gram will be at this time. Email me at [email protected] or call at 992-3848.

Here are the upcoming Thursday meeting programs for the 2020-2021 Year:

Stay safe, everyone. This, too,, will pass... Jeannie.

WOW meets on the third Thursday of each month in The Woods Clubhouse at 7pm. There are no annual

dues this year. If you have questions, please call Jeannie at 992-3848.

August Yard of the Month

Congratulations to Hector and Sonia

Sepulveda, at 13064 Tall Tree South,

for being chosen as the August 2020

Yard of the Month. The Sepulvedas

have lived in our community for over 16

years. Hector’s 92 year old mother lives

with them also. Hector retired from the

Air Force with 20 years service and then

worked at NAS Mayport Family Service

Center before retiring again. He is writ-

ing a book of his many memoirs at this

time. Sonia worked for AT&T and has

also retired. If you should see this lovely

couple, out and about, please congratu-

late them for their hard work. (Sonia

said that Hector mows the yard every

other day.)

Again we would like to “Thank” ACE

Hardware at Harbor Place for the gift

certificate.

From the Board (continued)

Gardening in August

Limit time spent in the sun. If you do go out, put

on sunscreen, and remember, it's Dog Days. Begin

seedlings of fall flowers and vegetables for Sep-

tember transplanting. Prepare planting beds for

the Fall gardening season by killing weeds and in-

corporating clippings, compost, or leaf mold. Gath-

er wildflower seeds of coreopsis, gaillardia, and

dune sunflower to sow in Oct-Nov. Pinch poinsetti-

as and mums for the last time this month.

The Woods Yard of the Month committee extends

its thanks to the Ribault Garden Club of Jackson-

ville for providing the gardening tips and sugges-

tions that appear in The Woodsette each month

from their Horticultural calendar.

(continued from page 1)

The plan is to get bids for paving just one phase, and a

second bid in the same proposal for two phases. We

would then select what works best for The Woods. We

have hired a consulting engineer for the next phase,

and they agree with this process and advised that it is a

common method of exploring savings.

If you would like to volunteer for a committee, please

contact the committee chairperson at the email ad-

dress noted here. We have openings in most commit-

tees (see below).

Wishing you all the best in the month of August.

Tennis in August at the Woods

TIME for TENNIS! The Woods’ eight tennis clay courts are a showpiece in our community. They are main-

tained by Tommy, Buddy, and Paul, under the direction of Jenn Morrison, our pro. They are available for

use seven days a week from 8:30AM to 9:30PM. Please call Jenn at (904) 864-2881, to reserve a court,

and check the white board in the recreation office window for court availability.

While summers are for practicing and playing fun matches, six ladies’ tennis teams call the Woods home

and compete locally from August-May. For working women, we have two teams, a B1 and a B3, that com-

pete on Saturdays. For retired ladies, or those with flexible schedules, we support two Interclub teams, a

B2 and a C2; plus two First Coast Teams, a B3 and a C2. As a Woods resident, you can play on more

than one team, but call Jenn. She can help you get started.

If you’re new to tennis, or if it’s been awhile since you’ve played, call Jenn! She is an energetic, positive

instructor who will get you going! If you have children, 5 and up, Jenn provides step-by-step, fun instruc-

tion tailored to individual or small groups. She also conducts weekly adult clinics, or private lessons.

Come on out, women, men, boys, and girls. Make use of our wonderful tennis facility! For more infor-

mation, call Jenn Morrison, (904) 864-2881.

Rebecca accepted

Watering: Two-days-a-week watering is currently in effect. Odd-numbered homes may water only

on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Even-numbered homes may water only on Thursdays and Satur-

days. There is to be NO watering between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00pm on any day.

Recycling is collected every other Wednesday. Recycling receptacles are to be placed at the curb

after 5:00pm every other Tuesday afternoon. Schedules may be obtained in The Woods’ office.

Lawn Debris may be placed at the curb after 5:00pm on Wednesday afternoon for pickup on

Thursday. Be sure not to block drains and gutters.

Garbage pickup has moved to Fridays. Garbage receptacles are to be placed at the curb after

5:00pm on Thursday afternoons for pickup on Fridays.

Cul De Sacs (common areas): Use by residents for trash, lawn debris, or parking is expressly pro-

hibited. These are common areas. We ask that everyone keep this in mind. Please note that

vehicles parked on any common area grass will be towed immediately once discovered by Woods’

security personnel.

Do not put lawn clippings, or any other debris, into any of the Woods’ ponds.

In order to assist the gate guards with more efficient entries, residents are encouraged to use the

Gate Sentry app on their smart phones. Call the management office if you have any questions.

For non-vehicular entry, all persons entering the community on foot, bicycle, etc., must check in

with the Gate guards and be prepared to show photo ID as proof of residency in the community.

Make yourself visible: If you like to ride bikes, walk, or jog late in the day or at night, be sure to

wear some light-colored (preferably reflective) clothing.

Jacksonville Municipal Code requires that pets must be on a leash or tether when being walked by

their owners. Both the law and common courtesy require that pet owners immediately clean up

any mess made by their pets.

Animals not on a leash, whether accompanied by the owner or not, should be reported immediate-

ly to the City of Jacksonville Animal Control at 630-2489.

The Board has continued the JSO patrols throughout the community. That means STOP at all stop

signs and honor the 25 mph speed limit.

REMINDER - Keep your garage doors closed when not in use and make sure your vehicles are

locked at all times.

DO NOT FEED THE GEESE THAT INHABIT THE PONDS AND LAWNS AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
