FromthePastor’sDeskD.A.Carsononcepointedouttousthattheideaoftoleranceisitselfintolerantofanyandallview-pointsthatit9indsoffensive.AsfollowersofChrist,ourgoalmustnotbetolerance,butloveandthespreadofthegospel.Wedonotmerelytoleratethosewithwhomwedisagree,weactuallyseethemasimage-bearersofGodinneedofthelife-savingmessageofthegospel.AsChristians,weshouldstandreadytomakeadefenseforthegospel,butitistimethatwestoppedbeingoffendedallthetimeandstartedengagingourcultureinlovingdialogueandconversation.ThekingdomofGodwillnotbespreadwithangryFacebookrantsandoccasionalpoliticalvictories.IfGodhadintendedtobringinhiskingdompolitically,Jesuswouldhavewornacrownofgoldinsteadofoneofthorns.Itmaybetruethatourcultureisincreasinglyhostiletowardthemessageofthecross(oranymessagewithwhichtheydonotagree),butweshouldnotbe

surprisedoroutraged.Jesuswarnedthatthiswascoming.Wemustnotmimicourculture’soutrage.Wemustbedifferent.Wemustproclaimacompellingmessagewithloveandgraceinthemidstofaculturethatwantstoshoutusdown.Untilwehavelearnedtocryforalostandhurtingworld,wehavenorighttoshoutabouttheactionsofourworld.WearenotsurprisedthatChristianmoralityisnotencouragedbyourculture.Wearenotsurprisedthatintheselastdaysrightiscalledwrongandwrongiscalledright.But,weshouldbesurprisedandoutragedwhenChristiansbegintoscreamatthelostinsteadofprayingforthemandsharingthehopeofthegospel.Praymorethanyoupostonsocialmedia.Sharemorethanyoushout.Listenmorethanyoulashout.Letusintercedeonbehalfofthosewithwhomwedisagreeandprayforourenemies.Afterall,theprayerofarighteousman“availethmuch.”

MissionEmphasis:PrisonerPackets ByGraceHoldenChristmasiscoming!InthelivesofSouthCarolinaBaptists,thatmeansPrisonerPackets!Wehopetogetanearlystartbycollectingourpacketsthismonth.Pleasehelpusbypickingupazipper-bag,whichincludesinstructions,fromthewelcomecenter.Or,ifyoucan’tshop,pleaseput$8intheofferingplateinanenvelopemarked“PrisonerPacket”andsomeonewillshopforyou.TheChristmasPacketsforPrisonersprojectbeganin1976.ItisajointprojectofSCBCandSCWMU.Astheprojecthasgrown,ourchurchescontinuetogivefaithfullyandgenerously.ThankyouforsharingtheloveofJesuswiththosewhoneedtoknowJesusinapersonalway.Thisyearourgoalistocollect128packetstobegiventotheinmatesofourstate.Manymen,women,andyouthhavenoonewhocaresforthem.Inmanycases,theydon’thaveanyvisitors,sotheydon’treceivegiftsatChristmas.Bygivingthissmallgift,youwillprovidehopeandlove.Asaresult,somehavereceivedthetrueChristmasgift.TheyhavecometoknowChristbecauseyoucare.EverysinglePrisonerPacketgetsdeliveredandeverysinglepacketcontainstheMessageofHope–thestory

Recentlyoneofthechildrencameintothechildren’sministryresourceroomtotalk.SheaskedmewhatIwasdoing,andwhenItoldherIwastakingtheVBSclasssignsoffthesticksthatweusesowecouldusethesticksagainnextyear,shestartedtalkingaboutVacationBibleSchool.Duringtheconversation,shesaid,“IwishwehadVBSagainnextweek.”VBSisknownasadif9icultweekformanyreasons,soIgroanedinwardlywhenshesaidthis,butIhavetoadmittoitsvalue.Sometimesbecauseweadultshavedonesomethingforyears,itlosesits“shine.”Weforgetitsvalue.Iwouldliketothankallofourchildren’sministryworkersforthecareandloveyoushowtoourchildreneveryweek.Thankyouthatyouarewillingtolookthroughtheeyesofachildtoseethevalueofwhatourchildren’sministrydoes!

Inthismonth’scopyofParentingTeens,thewritersaddressphoneaddiction.You’ll9indsomestaggeringstatistics,biographicalstories,andideastohelpyoudealwithaproblemthat’snotgoingaway.ImeanitwhenIsaythatit’snotgoingaway.Theonlytimethisbattlewilleverbebehindyouisifyourunfromit.SinceyourprimaryjobistopointyourchildrentoJesus,facethisproblemandask:Whatdowedowiththephone?Firstwemustpray.Praywithandforyourchildren.Then,betheirexamplewithyourphone.Asoneauthorpointedout,liketheplankwemustremovefromourowneye(Matt.7:3),wemustremovethecellphonefromourowneyebeforeaddressingitintheeyeofanother.Meaning,takethephoneawayfromyourowneye,momanddad.Intentionallyputyourphonewhereyoucan’treachit.Makesureit’sawayandsilentfordinnerandduringfamilyanddevotiontime.Doingsoemphasizesthatthephoneisn’twhatismostimportanttoyou.ThissaystoyourchildrenthatJesus,yourmarriage,andyourfamilycome9irst.Andforgoodnesssake,leaveitoutofthebedroomaltogether—yoursandtheirs.Second,teachyourchildrenhowtousetheirphone.Aslight-bearerswemustre9lectJesus’characterineverywordanddeed(Col.3:17).Therefore,teachyourchildrenthatthephoneandsocialmediaisnotaplacetobeknown,butisinstead,aplacetore9lect.It’snotaplacetoget“likes”,butaplacetobelight.Sodon’trunfromtheworldofsocialmedia,engageitseasonedwithsalt(Col.4:6).CanyouimaginewhattheApostlePaulwouldhavedonewithasmartphone?Paul’ssmartphonewouldhavebeenaninstrumentofuse,andsoitmustbeforus.Whatifallyoupostedandcommentedonwerewayspeopleserved,praised,andglori9iedGod?Thinkaboutwhatthatwouldlookliketoyourchildrenandtoalostworld.Third,beresponsible.Thesephoneshavemadeyoungpeople9iercelyindependent,butremember,theyarestilldependentonyoutopaytheirbill.Theyhaveaphonebecauseofyou.Ownthefactthatifyou’renotcareful,you’llbetheenablertotheiraddiction.Finally,doallyoucantodeveloptrustbetweenyourselfandyourchildren.Youmusthavea“whateverittakes”mentalitywhenitcomestotherelationshipyouhavewithyourchildren.Whatevertimeittakes.Whateverresourcesittakes.Whateverfootballgame,9ishing/shoppingtripmustbecancelled;youdo

whateverittakes.Thatmeansthosenewwhateversmighthavetobesacri9icedinordertogettoknowandbuildtrustwithyourchildren.Everythingelsetakesabackseat.It’simperativethatyouhavearelationshipwithyourchildthatallowsthemtoshareallthatthey’regoingthroughandwhy.And,praywiththem.Then,praywiththem.Finally,praywiththem.DidImentionthatyoushouldpraywiththem?Youandyourchildrenaretargetsinaspiritualwar.Paulremindsus:

ForwedonotwrestleagainstJleshandblood,butagainsttherulers,againsttheauthorities,againstthecosmicpowersoverthispresentdarkness,againstthespiritualforcesofevilintheheavenlyplaces.(Eph.6:12).

Remember,thisbattleisfortheheartofyourchild.Soaskyourself:Areyoudoingenoughtoprotectandguidethem?

worshipasaspectatorevent.Whatisworshiptoyou?Ifyoucometoworshipjusttowatchandlisten,maybetoenjoythemusic,thenyou’veapproachedworshipfromthewrongangle.It’sabeautifulthingforagroupofbelieverstojointogetherinonevoiceinpraisetoourheavenlyFather.There’ssomethingveryspecialaboutjointlyconfessingourfaithandadoration.Duringthosetimeswetakeoureyesoffourselvesandoffourproblems,andweputthemonGod.DuringthosemomentsweseewhatitmeanstobeapartofthebodyofChrist.Duringthosepreciousfewminuteswegetaglimpseofeternity.Doyouparticipate?Ordoyoustandbackandobserveasanoutsidermight?Iwanttoencourageyoutoevaluateyourparticipationinworship.Ifyou’renotparticipatingcorporately,thenlearntodoso.Ifyouwanttotakeittothenextlevelandbecomepartoftheworshipleadership,thencheckoutthechoir.Choirisagreatplacetogrowasaworshipper.Somakeworshipapriorityandspendsometimelearninghowtobeabetterworshiper.
