Greetings, Chapter E Members I can't believe it is August and almost time to say GOOD BYE to all our Chapter E family. If you would have told us that we would be moving to Missouri in December 2016, I would have said, “You’re funny! HA! HA!” So much has happened this year, it is hard to put all our fantastic memories in words. Just know that we will truly miss each & everyone. Since we joined GWRRA in 1992, we have always been a part of Chapter E. As Chapter E's Couple of the Year in 2015, we were so truly proud to represent Chapter E. Wow, what a great roller

coaster ride! Then our position as Chapter Directors, boy, what a great time we have had. Nobody could have prepared us for all the fun we have had as your Chapter Directors. A very big THANK YOU goes out to our Chapter Staff!

If we couldn't be at a gathering, we knew the Chapter was in great hands with Bill Weiss & Lisa Capano. Thank you from the bottoms of our heart for everything you helped us accomplish with answering questions, stepping in for us and doing whatever was needed. April Hansen, what can we truly say! If things needed to get done. you made it happen, from sending the weekly events out to publishing the newsletter, and keeping track of the Chapter’s funds and keeping us on the straight and narrow with all Chapter affairs. Morey & Wanda Stadel, what would it have been like if we didn't have a yearly maintenance day at your home. Wanda, as our phone lady we kept you quite busy reminding everyone when we had a Chapter meeting. Donald Redline, when we weren't at a Chapter gathering, dinner ride or other function, I know that there would be pictures on Facebook.

Roy & Mary Bastian and Gary & Sandy Wedge, we knew if there was anything that we needed help with we could always count on you. Bill Bunker, thank you for taking charge of reserving a spot for our fundraisers. Barb Bunker, thank you for making sure that, when people needed Chapter E shirts, you always had them ready to go. As for Bob & me, we really appre-ciate all your work in keeping our vests current. I know that was a difficult job because at times we had to have you rush them. As for all the other members of Chapter E, thank you for all the smiles and laughter you brought into our lives and the lives of the Chapter members. Not to forget all our family from all the other Chapters, we will miss you! Thank you for all the fun, laughter and great times we had.

For the past 10+ years, Peter Keppler has scheduled tours of various mines. The ones we have toured to date include: Black Thunder (surface) Mine at Wright, WY,

which is the largest coal mine in the U.S.; Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, SD;

Henderson Mill at Kremmling, CO, which mills molybdenum from the Henderson Mine;

Natural Soda Ash Mine at Meeker, CO, which has 99% naturally pure soda ash;

West Elk Underground Coal Mine at Paonia, CO (where we got to go to the long wall);

Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mine at Cripple Creek, CO; and

ColoWyo Mine at Meeker, CO. The morning of July 27th, we toured the Trapper Mine near Craig, Colorado. From Chapter E were Peter & April, Gary & Sandy Wedge, Roy & May Bastian, and Bill Bunker who brought his friends, Larry Bigg and Bob Ariniello. John & Barbara Roman of Chapter B rode over from Grand Junction to join us. This was the second time Peter has taken a group to the Trapper Mine, which is a surface coal mine. The Trapper Mine is a utility-owned surface coal mine located 6.5 miles southwest of Craig and produces approximately 2.5 million tons of sub-bituminous coal per year. The name “Trapper” reflects local history: Fur-trapping was an important livelihood in the area. In the spirit of the West, the mine’s pits are named for firearms: Ashmore, Browning and Colt, just to name a few. The three draglines are named in honor of famous women of the Old West: Queen Anne, Molly Brown and Baby Doe.

Roughly half of the electricity in the United States is produced from coal. Coal-fired steam generation plants produce about 68% of Colorado’s electricity. The connection between mining of coal the availability of electrical power is often not realized. Modern consumers rarely see the coal itself, only the versatile product of coal we all rely upon each time we turn on a light, a computer, a television, or even to charge a cell phone. All the coal produced at the Trapper Mine is delivered directly to the adjacent Tri-State Power Plant, Craig Generating Station, which we toured the afternoon of July 27th. We learned of the close connection between the Trapper Mine and the Craig Station. Also, coal from the ColoWyo Mine, which we toured last year, is delivered via rail to the Craig Station which has three coal-fired units that produce over 1,300 megawatts of electricity distributed to customers in four western states. Interestingly, coal from ColoWyo is a higher grade of coal than that from Trapper. When the coal is delivered from the two mines, it is stockpiled separately. The final crushing and mixing of the two coals is done at the Craig Station. Friday, the group traveled into southern Wyoming through the small towns of Baggs, Dixon, and Savery to Encampment, where we stopped at a new restaurant for delicious pizza. Then we went on to Saratoga to enjoy ice cream at Lollypop’s and take in the hot springs. For dinner, we went to Bella’s Bistro for excellent gourmet Italian food. Saturday, we traveled back to our homes in Colorado, looking forward to next year’s mine trip.

Member Appreciation Picnic Saturday, July 8, 2017, was a TOTALLY AWESOME, FUN DAY! We had about 36 GW members in attendance. No games, no 50/50, just good friends getting together for a great time. At the end of it all, there were some door prizes given away. The food was the best from Dickey’s BBQ: pulled pork, and turkey. Chapter E ladies brought baked beans, corn on the cob, cole slaw, and lots of fruit and desserts. There was a baked potato bar with all of the trimmings. There were three different flavors of BBQ sauce: Hot, original, and sweet. Well, it was so good, I went back for seconds like many others did. If you weren’t there, you missed out on a heck of a good time.
