Many organizations write a mission statement, which can take considerable time and effort and then it is never brought to life. It’s just words. Your Chamber is different. The Chamber’s mission statement and strategic objectives are front and center on its website and are regularly reviewed to ensure our vision is clear and heading in the right direction for our members. It is an important discipline. Recently, Chamber leadership again used its mission statement to guide an important strategic decision that will take multi-year planning, resources and efforts to implement.
If you go to our website, you will see within our mission and the first strategic objective, are two important phrases. They are, “promote regional prosperity” and be “the voice of business in the Tri-City region.” Please keep those two phrases in mind as I share with you the Chamber’s plan for a new committee.
Several times over the past few years the Chamber has been asked to support various regional initiatives; to essentially react to regional projects that are already in the works. Now we believe it is time for the Chamber to be proactive instead of reactive and provide business leadership, information and guidance on important regional issues and challenges that we face as a community.
Given this identified need for regional business leadership, a few dedicated board members put together the framework for a “Chamber” Regional Affairs Committee, and the concept was approved by the Chamber Board at our last meeting. At its core, the Regional Affairs Committee will provide leadership and a heightened understanding of the opportunities and challenges that we face as a region. The Committee will review key regional issues, gain insight and build consensus with all regional leaders, serve as a catalyst to formulate potential solutions that are important to the region and support the successful implementation of identified projects that will drive regional prosperity.
We are in the formative stages and will take our time as we form the foundation and design criteria for the committee. Eventually, the committee will be made up of 8-12 private sector, active, engaged and diverse business leaders willing to dedicate their time to our region’s success. The formation of a Regional Affairs Committee is the first step in a long-term, multi-year process that will enable the Chamber and the best business leaders in the Tri-Cities, to have a favorable impact on the important issues that will create the “Bolder and Brighter” community we all envision and the regional prosperity that is central to our mission. It is an exciting time for the Regional Chamber and its members!

MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS TO
FEDERAL BUYERS Your business is registered in all the right places (SAM, DSBS, FBO) and set-up for government contracting – now what? Relationship-building is key, especially if your products or services tend to fall under $25,000, as those opportunities may not be publicly posted. Developing marketing materials that speak the language of federal government contracting can be a daunting task, but with the help of the Washington Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), you can receive no-cost guidance to put you on the right track to success!
Developing an effective and impactful capability statement (sometimes called a ‘line card’ for suppliers) is absolutely necessary. Make sure your marketing one-pager includes:
Your government-specific info such as your company DUNS #, CAGE Code and primary NAICS codes (with their titles listed)
Up-to-date contact information
Any socio-economic information pertaining to your business (i.e. small business, woman-owned, veteran-owned, etc.)
Bullet points listing your capabilities that effectively distinguish you from your competitors
Past performance that highlights experience in your field
Extras: photos, community involvement, awards, testimonials and more!
In addition to a quality capability statement, be sure you have an up-to-date website that echoes the same information and complements your brand. Use your capability statement to introduce your business to federal buyers, take to outreach events, link to your website and more.
Feel free to utilize Washington PTAC for a review of your capability statement and receive helpful feedback and suggestions. Remember, PTAC services are always offered at no-cost!
