Fall Classic Car Show

July 2, 2013

Meeting: Convened at 6:55 pm by Club President Dan Bremer at Austin’s Cattle Company. The Opening Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance were led by Johnny Swilley and Rick Hastings respec-tively. There were 27 members and 2 guests in attendance.

Minutes: The June minutes were accepted as published.

Treasurer’s Report: Donna Roberson gave the June Treasurer’s Report and was accepted as read. For a detailed copy of the report, contact one of the club officers.

President’s Remarks: Dan recapped recent activities including the very successful “garage tour”. The Club Cruiser is now in the care of Walt Prettyman, newly elected 1

st VP.

As a fundraiser for the Sheriff’s Boys Ranch, the raffling of a customized golf cart was discussed – with more info needed could be a good 2014 project.

The Fall Classic Car show committee consisting of Logan, Madonna, Rick and Dan met and pre-sented a rough draft of proposed car classes.

A reduction in the entry fee from $20 to $15 was passed by the members present.

With the show taking place at the Outlet Mall in Lake Park, we now can solicit vendors providing an additional source of revenue.

The committee will meet again 6 pm July 16th at Austin’s.

Bob Raffaele gave a brief overview of possible club logo merchandise. While the choice involving screen printed designs was put off till next month, a motion to have the club logo digitized passed unanimously. Once completed, individual members can have any item of their choosing embroi-dered.

Former members Paul and Sue Worth were welcomed back.

Dinner raffles were won by Johnny Swilley, Richard Lassiter and Chris Bremer

Meeting: Adjourned at 8;20 pm

— Minutes submitted by Bob Raffaele, Club Secretary.

Minutes

By Dan Bremer Thanks to everyone who came out in the rain for our “Bars and Churches Tour”. Eleven cars and twenty members had breakfast at The Farmhouse, toured 23 bars and churches for clues, ate lunch at Cheddar’s and finally had a Cruise In at Gander Mountain. We even had almost a full page write up in the Valdosta Daily Times. Well done and Thanks. If you are not getting the “Smile Box” picture show of these events, we must not have your email address. If you receive the “Driver’s Seat” but not the “Smile Box”, please send your email address to [email protected]. We are putting together the pieces for the 1957 Chevy Golf Cart. I have located an excellent cart and Logan is finding the body. There should be a report on that at the August meeting. I will be working in Montana and Idaho in August so Walt will be taking over the meeting on August 6

th

and Rick Hastings will be in charge of the August activities for the club. I hope we can also elect a First Vice President at the August meeting. Thanks.

President’s Report

Mario Bartoletti

Many years ago, America’s top weekly newsmagazine was LIFE. It’s distinction was a photo– essay format, i.e., telling each story

with excellent photographs and few words. The editors obviously believed the old adage: “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Within that concept, I submit this month’s Reflections article.

In 1949, Buick introduces two styling features on its cars that became identified with that make; they were “Ventiports” on the front

fenders and a Sweepspear along each sde. The ventiports were adapted from the 1910 Buick Bug racing car; it had four round exhaust

ports along its left side. However, the sweepspear cannot be traced to just an older Buick. The following photographs tell the Story.

EPILOG: So, Buick designers didn’t originate the sweepspear back

in 1941. It was actually a 1938 Italian design feature. I am an avid

Buick collector, but I’m also an Italian. This development leaves

ma a lot to reflect on!

Reflections

1952—Buick styling study with rapier-styled sweepspear

1949—Buick introduces the Ventiports and the Sweepspear

1953-Buick Skylark convertible; a limited production car

1958—Buick Limited sedan; the last car with sweepspears

1971-73– Riviera Boattail coupes; surprise resurrection of the

sweepspear. 1941—Buick styling study with sweepspear side trim; given as the

origin for the sweepspear

1938– Alfa-Romeo 8C “Spider Souring” sportcar; designed by

Enzo Ferrari

SSR for Sale

Eddie Hewett, retired USAF vet has this 2003 Chevy SSR truck for sale. This is due to the fact that he is a double amputee and is unable to drive. The truck has been garaged all it's life and has only 4,185 miles on the odometer. This truck is in new condition with all the bells and whistles. If there is any one in the club interested please call Eddie at 244-8153 (if no answer please leave a message).

5:00pm until 8:00pm

It is hard to believe that August is here already. Back to

School sales are in full swing and students will be back in

school early in this month. So be careful driving around

during the week, with all the children on their way to an d

from school and the buses picking up and dropping off

these children.

As a club, July was a lot of fun. We had a productive club

meeting at Austin’s, followed by another meeting two

weeks later for planning the Fall Classic Car & Truck Show.

The Toys-R-Us was well attended, in spite of the threaten-

ing weather.

The highlight of the month was the Scavenger Hunt—

Churches and Bars! 20 club members in 11 cars visited 23

sites and collected answers to about 50 clues. (only one

person had all the clues correctly answered—your editor

himself!) The scavenger hunt ended about the time that the

clouds opened up and poured on us. Fortunately, most of

us were in Chedders already for checking our answers and

having lunch. The rains stopped in time for the Cruise-in at

Gander Mountain. We met several interested individuals,

and even got nice coverage in the Valdosta Daily Times.

The Fall Classic is coming in October. Plans are under-

way. Come to the August meeting and learn more.

Thanks to Mario for providing another in his series of Re-

flections articles for this issue.

A local disable Vet asked us to see if anyone is interested

in his 2003 Chevy SSR. We

don’t usually put ads like this in

the newsletter, but the editor

made an exception for this one

Happy Cruising!
