More than News New Opportunities for Ministry At the July 18 Administrative Counsel meeting, two proposals were presented and passed. The first proposal was to begin a new ministry for our young families. Katie Carothers presented a plan to be-gin a day care for children. The proposal was to raise money to purchase the house across the street at 214 N. Bluff. After many questions concerning the financing, organization, and future support for the new ministry, the vote was unanimous to begin the ministry. The agreement is that the Anthony United Methodist Church would provide $30,000 for expected $90,000 needed to purchase the building and the start up cost for the first three months of the United Methodist Day Care. The rest of the money would be raised by Katie Carothers and the soon to be organized board of directors for the newly formed ministry. The board of directors will hire the two people required by the state. It will be a state licensed home day care which will be able to have three infants and nine children. The number of the children able to be in the Day Care is determined The second proposal was to raise funds for the trustees’ project list. The list includes the following: asphalt topping, $3,000 (all ready done); an LED church sign, $12,000; asphalt expansion, $6,000, ex-panding the asphalt to the west to be even with the church; gabled carport; $4.000; prayer garden: $5,000; fencing and playground equipment for park: $14000; work done on parsonage over $5,000, including new stove, pouring cement walk way. Other things not included in cost of stove are new plumbing, new linoleum, guttering replaced, and storage shed. We do not have an estimate cost for some of these items. The Administrative Counsel voted to support the trustees projects, The Anthony United Methodist Church has the opportunity to expand our ministry and to help the young families with a great need. We trust God will lead and guide us to accomplish this whole set of new ministries God has put before us. It will challenge our faith and our willingness to be faithful to begin a new ministry. Some time during September we hope to mail out a proposal for our needs to accomplish these projects. If you want to help out with these projects you may identify which project you would like to support. Please indicate on your check which project you want to support.

Prayer Chain needs a new list! We need some help. The prayer chain has some missing links now that we have had some people who have moved out. As a result we would like

those who have been a part of the Prayer Chain to bring into the office any list you might have of a prayer chain of our church. If you are on the Prayer Chain but do not have a list, please contact the office with the person who called you and who you called. Praying for each other is vital ministry of every Christian. The week of July 9 - 13 our church family fed an average of 61 meals during the Summer Food Program. We had 22 different volunteers help serve the meals. I want to thank all our volunteers for

Physically Fit and Fun with the Family

“(Children) are indeed a heritage from the Lord, the

fruit of the womb a reward.” Psalm 127:3 (NRSV)

Children and youth need physical activity for

healthy growth and development. With physical

activity levels decreasing and obesity increasing

among today’s children and youth, it’s time that

whole families move! Usually active parents have

active kids. So, parents, play with children and

youth. Encourage them to be active. Be role

models.

Families can do active things together to have fun

and develop better health. Go for walks, ride bikes,

shoot hoops, dance to music, or make a game of

raking leaves. The family that prays and plays

together, stays together!

August 2012 – National Immunization Month

Vaccine preventable diseases are popping back up around

the country, including Barber County. Currently, there is an

increase in the number of people with pertussis (whooping

cough) in the county. This month serves as a reminder that

children, teens and adults need to be immunized to protect

their health and for the health of the community. Below are

just a few of the immunizations people need at different

ages.

Young children:

Children under age 6 get a series of shots to protect against

measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chicken pox, pneumonia,

hib, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and hepatitis. Preteens:

All 11 and 12-year-olds need shots to help protect against

tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), meningitis

and HPV. Adults:

All adults need a tetanus shot every 10 years.

Adults also need one vaccination against pertussis

(Tdap). People age 65 need a one-time pneumonia shot. Talk to your healthcare provider or the Harper County

Health Department about which shots you and your family

need.

Currently, the HCHD (Harper County Health Department of

Health) is offering free Tdap vaccinations to:

Parents, caregivers, and close contacts of children under

age 6 regardless of insurance status. Any Sedgwick County resident age 19 and older without in-

surance. The HCHD is located at 123 N. Jennings, the phone number

is 842-5132. They are open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

This is important. I found out there is a man in Kiowa

who has the Whooping Cough. I went to the Health De-

partment and they told me, as I was receiving my injec-

tion, they have plenty of serum for everyone at this time.

Please make it a point to get your booster. It does not

hurt at all. It may save your life. Connie

A THANK YOU NOTE FROM LEE COX: Please let everyone know that the fund raiser for Kyle Newlin was a HUGE success! We calculated nearly 200 people attended the event. Kirk and Tess counted $1,730 in donations yesterday during the dinner. I re-ceived another $20 today, so our total to date is $1,750. Special thanks to EVERYONE who provided food for the dinner. When we send out a call, everyone at AUMC rallies to offer help!!! We can't say enough about the JH-HS kids (see the attached pictures) who worked so hard to prepare, serve, and clean-up for the fund raiser. They are an amazing group of young adults. Jamie Newlin, Kyle, and several of their extended family members all expressed their appreciation and gratitude for the out-pouring of support for Kyle.

Christian Family Weekend Take the Path Less Traveled

"Take the Path Less Traveled" is the theme for our Christian Family Weekend on August 4th and 5th. We have planned a Family Campout with the Chris-

tian Off-Road Association. CORA, as they are known, is a group of families who like to camp and drive their off-road vehicles. They will be brining

many of their four wheel vehicles to show and hope-fully to drive.

The weekend begins with a campfire service on Satur-day night at 8:30pm some where around the Stage

area at Anthony Lake. All families who like to camp are invited to come and share in the fun.

We are planning to have activities for families as well as fishing.

On Sunday morning we will begin with breakfast at 8:00am. We ask each family to bring their own eggs

and meat. The church will provide the grills.

Worship service will begin at 9:30 at the Anthony Lake stage area. Members of CORA will provide the message and children’s message. We plan on having several gazebo type tents so that we can have shade

for those who need it. There will be no Sunday school or Worship service at our Church; it will be at

the lake. After the worship service, we will have things for the children to do while others talk to CORA members about their off-road vehicles. We would welcome

anyone to bring their own off-road vehicle. We also encourage kids of all ages to bring their Radio

controlled trucks and cars to the event. We plan on having fun.

At noon a dinner will be provided for a free will of-

fering. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be on the menu. Please call the office to volunteer to bring

cakes, salads, and other items.

This weekend is designed for families of all ages to have fun and to be together as Christians. God loves

us and desires to have us share with others. Please invite your friends who would like to camp and who

might be interested in the off-road vehicles.

A clergyman was walking down the street when he came upon a group of a few boys about 10 years of age, surrounding a dog. Concerned that the boys were hurting the animal, he went over and asked them what they were doing. One of the boys replied, “This dog is an old neighbor-hood stray. We take him home with us sometimes, but since only one of us can take him home we’re hav-ing a contest: whichever one of us tells the biggest lie can take him home today.” Of course, the Reverend was shocked. “You boys shouldn’t be having a contest telling lies!” he ex-claimed. He then launched into a 10-minute sermon against lying, beginning, “Don’t you boys know it’s a sin to lie?” and ending with, “Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie.” There was complete silence for about a minute while the boys all looked at each other and lowered their heads. Just as the Reverend began to think he had got-ten through to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh and handed him the leash. “Alright, reverend,” he said, “You win. You can take him home.”.
