Wesley Tidings February 2020

It is very interesting to me how we mark time. By calendars,

holidays, cultural observances, seasonal shifts in nature, our own

personal special occasions and family dates. If we did not have

card companies or public holidays to remind us of upcoming

social dates, what would become the markers of our time?

For centuries the church offered order with seasonal rituals, cel-

ebrations, and holy observances. This is a hobby of mine. I en-

joy exploring religious festivals and seasons. Arriving in deep

winter the calendar can seem a bit sparse. As we meander between Christmas and

Mardi Gras we find ourselves amidst a scattering of festivals that draw our partici-

patory attention. There is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Lunar New Year, Presidents

Day, and Valentine’s. Fascinating as a liturgical observer I see us in the fuller sea-

son of Epiphany, a time to honor and proclaim the great light of Christ in our lives.

A season of joyous hope of which Christmas is really an extension. Epiphany keeps

us warming in the light of divine presence all the way to Shrove Tuesday and Ash

Wednesday where we turn to an intentional time of prayer and fasting through

Lent. We can with all authenticity of our faith tradition continue the observances of

Christmas during this entire season. Singing carols, sharing hospitality of hearth

and home, offering gifts, practicing kindness, giving our of love to friends and

neighbors, acting with the “Christmas spirit”. What wondrous gifts the themes of

Epiphany afford us throughout the depth of Winter.

So if you are looking for a way to mark time, remember we are in the season of

light, the light of the world dwelling with us, and be a beacon of hope. Shine. Illu-

minate. Beam. Be a living holiday, offering continual celebrations of God’s pres-

ence in our special days and every days.

With all the love of Christ, Pastor Gretchen

As you finalize your plans for Super Bowl,

Wesley UMC invites you to participate in the

SouperBowl of Caring. Bring canned soup or

dry goods for soup to church Sunday morning,

February 2nd. They will be delivered to the Food Pantry of H.E.L.P. in Hampton.

Donations to H.E.L.P. for their food ministry are also welcome. Consider ways you

might give of your time volunteering with H.E.L.P. or another local food ministry

on Saturday before the game or if you have no plans to watch, on Sunday. Together

we can tackle hunger.

Wesley In the Community Event—Elbow Events

You’ve heard the phrase Elbow Event many times over the years. What is an Elbow

Event and why are they a part of our monthly calendar together? I’m glad you asked.

Using an elbow to gently welcome and guide and gather new people into a relation-

ship with Jesus through the people and experiences of this community of faith. The format places people

without a church community elbow to elbow with church participants. It creates an atmosphere where poten-

tial new followers of Christ and current disciples can engage in conversation, invitational relationships, and

common ground from life connections. It is a safe space for growing hope and inviting faith. They happen in

the wider community because that is where people share daily life. They are non Churchy events because that

is where people socialize.

Together we are entering into the mission field of daily life to walk alongside and welcome neighbors as

Christ welcomes us.

Tidewater Friends of Acoustic Music Presents: Saint Juliens Creek Revival

Friday, February 28, 2020 @ 7:00 pm

Wesley United Methodist Church

2510 N. Armistead Ave.

Hampton, VA 23666

Admission is by donation ($5 suggested)

Refreshments will be provided for sale.

Formed in 2016 out of Norfolk, VA, the members of Saint

Juliens Creek Revival were brought together through the

local bluegrass music picking circles. Recognizing a mu-

tual love of traditional music and three-part harmony, they

soon branched off to explore their own sound, and Saint

Juliens Creek Revival was born. The band’s mission is to

engage the local community in roots music by bringing

an eclectic mixture of folk, Americana, bluegrass, gospel,

and original songs to its audiences. The varied back-

grounds of its members provide a unique combination of musical styles that is both contemporary and

steeped in tradition, with influences ranging from Appalachian ballads to European gypsy jazz to Rock &

Roll. Saint Juliens Creek Revival is proud to be a 2020 VEER Music Awards nominee, and is making plans

to go into the studio this year. https://saintjulienscreekrevival.com/home

Prayer Shawl Ministry – Please read! This part is for the entire congregation!

Elizabeth Rowland, Rosemary Adriany’s mother, was an active part of Wes-

ley’s prayer shawl ministry for several years before she passed away in 2013.

Rosemary recently gave us her mother’s beautiful china cabinet which will

be used to display and store prayer shawls. We are creating space in the

church parlor (next to the office) for this cabinet. Rosemary told me it means

so much to her knowing that something her Mom loved has a special place

and purpose. We are very appreciative of this wonderful gift.

Do you know someone in need of a tangible symbol of love? Give them a

prayer shawl. Our shawls are available for you to give to anyone who needs

to know that God is with them. They do not need to be a member of Wesley

and do not need to be a Christian. The gift of a prayer shawl is an easy and

meaningful way to share God’s love. Last week I gave a shawl to my neigh-

bor the day before he was scheduled to have his leg amputated. His immedi-

ate response was that he is an atheist. I told him that was OK, everyone needs

a hug. When he read the card that is included with each shawl, he burst into

tears, leading me to believe that he is not an atheist, but someone with a lot of

questions. The Holy Spirit was definitely at work.

If you want to give a prayer shawl, please contact Sylvia Krisnow or Judi

Hines. We will help you select a shawl (or do it for you). We record the gifts

in a book so that we know who has received a shawl and how many we gave

given.

I have been asked a few times what we charge for shawls. The answer is sim-

ple: nothing. The shawls are gifts. We will, however, happily accept mone-

tary donations (marked “Prayer Shawl”) to help with the purchase of yarn and

other supplies.

This part is only for those interested in crocheting or knitting with us!

We will be meeting on Saturday, February 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall (note time

change!) Bring a bag lunch. Desert will be provided.

If a beginner to knitting or crocheting, we will have all the supplies you will need. Yarn to learn on will be fur-

nished. Instructions will be provided and support given, as needed. If you plan on purchasing yarn for a shawl,

you will need approximately 750 yards of 4 ply yarn. Solid, light colors of yarn are the easiest for first time

learners. Those of you already knowing how to knit or crochet, bring whatever yarn, needles and pattern you

would like to use. Some simple patterns will be available.

Please RSVP to Judi Hines by Friday, February 7. This helps us know how to set up

the room.

Church in Mozambique continues to grow

The Rev. Glenn Rowley, conference director for the Center of Justice and Mis-

sional Excellence, traveled to Mozambique in mid-November to meet with the

bishop of the Mozambique Conference and explore new options for multiple con-

ferences to continue in partnership with the country. During Rowley’s visit with

Bishop Joaquina Filipe Nhanala, he and three persons from the Missouri Confer-

ence met the bishop’s staff and members of the 2020 General Conference Mozam-

bique delegation. They also discussed ideas for a model for multiple conferences

to work together in new partnership with the United Methodist Church in that

country and to learn how U.S. partners can be supportive of the Mozambique dele-

gates and the partnership with Mozambique. The time spent talking about partner-

ship made Rowley reflective on his own connection to the conference and the Vir-

ginia Conference’s ongoing connection to it. https://vaumc.org/pages/

Prayer Group

Each week in worship you lift up people and

situations in prayer.

These are prayed over

by the Pastor, the Mon-

day Crew, and the Tuesday Prayer Group. Many other

individuals also continually pray for these and other situ-

ations daily. When you complete a prayer card or send

an email to the church office, it is a great help for this

ministry of care.

Being a Prayer Covenant Community is an incredible

gift of grace. Thank you for your continued prayers in

support of the ministries we share. All are welcome to

share in this practiced faith experience on any Tuesday

morning.

Pastor’s Discretionary

Fund

Throughout the year Wesley

supports the well-being of local

residents in need of financial as-

sistance. With grants available once a quarter, in-

dividuals received help with gas, electric, and wa-

ter throughout the year. 61 individuals were given

assistance through the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund

in 2019 which you support by your offerings. To-

tal funds of $ 3,050 were given in 2019. Thank

you for the resources you share to be a blessing in

difficult times. This is just one of the ways your

stewardship is lived out.

Thank You From the Salvation Army

Because of YOU, Christmas was made possible for 4,972 children living in poverty

across the Virginia Peninsula. You have been a blessing to so many, including us

here at The Salvation Army. See the bulletin board outside the church office for the

official “Thank You” letter, as well as pictures from this year’s Angel Tree.

Please know you are appreciated, and we look forward to working with you again in 2020. As a side note,

Angel Tree tags will be available the second week in October. We will send out mass emails then, so be on

the lookout.

May 2020 be a year of blessing for you and your family! May God bless you abundantly. Thank you.

Salvation Army

Thank You!

Thank You so much for allowing the Williamsburg

Youth Harp Society and the Tidewater Cello Ensem-

ble perform at your lovely church. You were won-

derful hosts and a great audience for our musicians!

We so appreciate the generous free-will offering

that you took up on our behalf. We are so grateful

for you support. Thank you for sharing Ms. Camp-

bell with the Harp Society. We’d be lost without

her!

RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED Prepared with Love especially for:

Conflict Transformation Skills for Churches

The York River District is presenting Conflict Transformation Skills for Churches on Satur-

day, February 29, 2020 at Grace United Methodist Church in Newport News. This class is

especially relevant during today’s turbulent times!

You can find information and register at https://

www.yorkriverdistrict.org/news/district-events.html

"Having participated in this experience I highly commend this

opportunity to you all. Tension and conflict are part of the hu-

man drama. Taking time to consider how we respond to and

work within that drama is priceless. Exploring the Biblical wit-

ness to guide our actions is powerful. I encourage everyone to

take advantage of this one day workshop. Come talk with me if

you have more questions. Pastor Gretchen."

The cost to attend the

workshop is $25

(Participant’s Workbook

- $15 and Lunch - $10)

NOTE: Please register

by sending your pay-

ment to the York River

District Office by the

deadline of Monday,

February 24th.
