be sure that another year or even a single day will be committed to our trust and so we must walk in His steps daily. The Broken Column is the symbol of the uncertainty of human life and a constant reminder that our lives are in the hands of the Maker. I present you with this gift as a sign of your faith.

I present you with this gift as a sign of your love.

I feel lucky having officers like you.

You've been thoughtful, you've been kind,

As we listen to her story of loving kindness and hospitality to the poor, at great risk to herself, we are aware that in our everyday way of life, our cup of blessings overflows. Each day the cup must remind us of the opportunity for service to others all around us. Like Electa, we must hear again the words of our Master, “Love one another.”

Sis. Electa,

You're so nice and understanding too.

( Treasurer Speaks):

Many times you have told us Electa's story of her incidents of great persecution in her life and the manner in which she faced all these trials with great courage. Her determination to stand for the cause of truth teaches us an important lesson and gives the cup a new dimension.

Programs & Tributes

Hi Everyone - June 12, 2009I got home today after four days in the hospital. I am taking some good long recovery time, reflecting on how important family and friends really are. Thanks for all your kind thoughts, messages and prayers. - Sydney

In our Holy Bible it tells us to number our days and to recognize how few they are so that we may spend them wisely. None of us can

I present you with this gift as a sign of your faithfulness.

Sis. Ruth,,

(Secretary Speaks)

I present you with this gift as a sign of your loyalty.

Sis. Martha,,

The many jewels in Queen Esther's crown are a reminder of the countless places where we, as members, may portray loyalty as she did. May we look upon each jewel in this crown to symbolize a gem that we have placed in the lives of others.,

Sis. Adah,

(Conductress Speaks)

(Assoc. Matron Speaks)

As members, let us raise the veil so that we may see clearly the obligations that rest upon us everyday; that promises made should be promises kept; that duties assumed should be duties fulfilled & that one of the greatest virtues that we can enjoy is that of being dependable.,

I present you with this gift as a sign of your constancy.

Many times you have told us that Adah raised her veil in order that she might see clearly the duty & responsibility that was hers because of her father's vow. In our lives, it is sometimes easy to allow our various duties in life to be hidden by a veil that obscures our view.,

Sis. Esther,,

The sheaf of Ruth emphasizes the worth of small tasks in the eyes of God. Each of us can do a kindness and serve others in humility.,

Many times you have told us the story of Martha and her unfailing faith in Christ. At the low times in our lives, it lifts our spirits to higher ground where we can feel secure.,

Many times you have related the story of the humble gleaner Ruth gathering the gleanings left from the reapers. Often times these minute parts were all that stood between the people and starvation. Stooping over and over again all day in the hot sun was backbreaking labour, yet Ruth did this cheerfully for her family.,

Many times you have told us Queen Esther and her life were chosen as an example of loyalty to friends, to country and to God. One of the blessings that enriches all our relationships is the experience of loyalty from our friends and loved ones. It gives us an inner warmth and confidence as we approach each day.,

(Assoc. Cond. Speaks)

(Worthy Matron Speaks)This year we have chosen the Star Points as our honoured stations. They are not only the floral centre of our Star, but often are the sisters who are involved in welcoming our special guests and in raising funds for our projects. You Star Point Officers have the important duty of teaching the lessons of our Order to new candidates. Tonight we turn the tables and you will listen as we honour you.

Dr. Morris became a Master Mason in Oxford, Mississippi, March 5, 1846. He soon became interested in an idea that the female relatives of Master Masons should share, in a measure, the benefits from knowledge of this great fraternal Order. Embued with this desire, his fertile mind set forth to evolve an Order which would benefit both men and women.

r. Rob Morris, Master Builder of the Order of

D the Eastern Star, was born August 31, 1818, near Boston, Massachusetts. His childhood and young manhood were spent in New York

where he received many educational advantages including a college training which qualified him as a successful lawyer, lecturer, educator and instructor in Masonry. He devoted many years in research and creative writing.

In 1855 he organized a Supreme Constellation with himself as the Most Enlightened Grand Luminary, with head-

At this time, he met and later married Miss Charlotte Mendenhall. Several children were born of this union. Mrs.Morris was an inspiration to Dr. Morris and a real helpmate for nearly fifty years. They both worked on the idea of the Order and invited brother Masons and their wives to discuss the plans with Dr. Morris demonstrating to them the theories he had formulated. This may be rightfully termed the origin of the Order of the Eastern Star, although it was many years before it was recognized or its principles felt by those fortunate enough to come within its scope. During the years he taught as principal in "The Little Red Brick School Building" in Richland, Mississippi, 1849 - 1850, he worked with zeal writing a Ritual of the Order of the Eastern Star. In 1850 he systematized the Degrees with the idea of giving them form. He decided on the degrees, contemplated the themes, incorporated from the pages of antiquity the heroines and names upon which the beautiful work is builded, established the signs and passes, colors and emblems of the Order and promulgated the fundamentaL principles which have remained unchanged through the years. The first Ritual was compiled and published under the title of "The Rosary of the Eastern Star.”

quarters in New York City. Charters were issued in all parts of the United States. In 1860 Constellations were discontinued & charters issued for Families. In 1868 the Constellation & Families became history.

The first Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star was organized in Michigan in 1867. Three years later Grand Chapters were organized in Mississippi, New Jersey and New York. Before the close of 1876, Grand Chapters were organized in California, Vermont, Indiana, Connecticut, Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Massachusetts.

In 1880 the General Grand Chapter conferred on Dr. Morris the title of "Master Builder of the Order of the Eastern Star" and August 31st, the birthday of this illustrious man, was set apart as the Festal Day of the Order.

Dependencies of Australia are underjurisdiction of the United Gr.Chapter of Australia established 1985. Chapters have been organized subordinate to the General Grand Chapter in Alaska, Aruba, Austria, Bermuda,

In 1867 and 1868 Mr. Macoy compiled and published a Ritual, using Dr. Morris' Rosary as a guide. This was the beginning of the organization of Chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star in the States as well as internationally. He immediately attempted to make the work more systematic and succeeded in adapting it to organized Chapters in such a way as to assure their success.

Meanwhile the publication of different Rituals and revised editions thereof brought confusion and diversity in the work where there should have been uniformity. It therefore became necessary that this be corrected with all Grand Chapters united under one body and using the same Ritual; thus the General Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star was organized in Indianapolis, Indiana, Nov.16, 1876. Committees were appointed to compile a Ritual of the Order. The one now in use has evolved from the Ritual edited by Committees appointed at that time.

The Chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star now encircle the earth. The General Grand Chapter has jurisdiction over all Grand Chapters in the United States (except New York and New Jersey which are independent Grand Chapters), the Provinces in Canada, and the Grand Chapter of Puerto Rico. There is a Supreme Grand Chapter of Scotland with jurisdiction over Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, South Africa, and New Zealand. The States, Territories and Dependencies of Australia are underjurisdiction of the United Grand Chapter of Australia established in 1985.

In 1866 Dr. Morris became associated with Mr. Robert Macoy of New York City. Upon Mr. Morris' departure for the Holy Land he transferred to Robert Macoy all the authority he had assumed and exercised in planning the Order of the Eastern Star. Under Mr. Macoy's guiding hand the Supreme Grand Chapter was organized. This was a self-constituted body. Deputies were appointed in all parts of the United States, the Territories and in Mexico.

"The degree called the Eastern Star... is strictly my own origination. By the aid of my papers, and the memory of Mrs. Morris, I recall even the tr ivial occurrences connected with the work - how I hesitated for a theme, how I dallied over a name, how I wrought face to face with the clock that I might keep my drama within due limits of time, etc. The name was first settled upon, “The Eastern Star.” - Rob Morris, 1852

Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, observed the 100th Anniversary of the Writing of the Ritual with appropriate ceremonies held in Washington, D.C.

On July 31, 1888, when the news of his death was sent to all parts of the world, profound grief was expressed at his passing. He was buried in the cemetery in La Grange, Kentucky, where a tall marble shaft has been errected in his memory. On one side is the Square & Compasses, on the other, the Five Pointed Star.

As the stars which bedeck the canopy of heaven are the beauty and glory of the night and light the pathway of man on his journey through life, so may the beautiful Star in the East, with all its significance, ever remain the glory of the Order of the Eastern Star and light the pathway of the members in the fulfillment of their vows.

Compiled by Mamie Lander, Past MWGMa nd Right Worthy Grand Secretary -- 1955

Dr. Morris spent a great part of his life in Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky. The last twenty-six years were spent in La Grange, Kentucky. His home (pics above & below) is the property of the Gr. Chapter of Kentucky. It is maintained as a Shrine in honor of the Master Builder of our Order.

Dr.Morris was generous, tender of heart and loving in disposition. He was happiest when sharing with others that which the Lord had bestowed upon him.

The International Eastern Star Temple and the offices of the General Grand Chapter are located in Washington, D.C. In the Reception room of the International Eastern Star Temple, over the mantel, hangs an oil painting of this distinguished Master Builder of our Order. This was a gift from the Gr. Chapter of Kentucky and was unveiled by his granddaughter, Miss Ella Morris Mount, PGM and Gr. Secretary of Kentucky.

The "Little Red Brick School Building in Mississippi" is owned by the Gr. Chapter of Mississippi and is maintained as a Shrine in honor of Dr. Morris' writing of the Ritual there.

“The jar lid and berries sit in the pot looking pretty and covering the twist ties

and rubber bands I store inside.”

Trellis: Arrange three craft sticks as shown in Fig. 2 and glue bottom edges

together. Finish trellis by gluing last stick across top, placing it 1 inch from top

of center stick. Paint trellis Wild Rice. Let dry.

THE KITCHEN is the heart of Denise's home—even when it comes to

Grafting. "It's where I work on projects," she details. "I've gone so far as to load

up a couple cupboards with key supplies to keep things handy."

Pot: Use foam brush to paint outside of pot and inside of rim Purple. Paint both

the outside and inside of saucer to match. When dry, mark 1-inch intervals

around rim of pot with pencil. Dip tip of No. 2 liner brush handle into Wild Rice

and dab on four dots at each 1-inch mark (Fig. 1). Let dry.

Crafterthoughts...

Denise doesn't confine herself to the materials in just those cupboards, though.

"Rice and pasta shells have worked themselves into my crafts," she recounts.

This time, Denise combined both supplies to create a container for her kitchen.

"I covered a canning jar lid with coffee grounds to create the 'dirt' in a garden

pot I'd painted," she describes. "Then I stuck artificial berries in the 'dirt'.

• To speed up this craft, you can use a pot that's already painted instead of em-

bellishing a plain one like Denise did.• "Planting" silk flowers is another

option. Choose favorites to fill the top of the pot. Then add coffee grounds for

dirt, or cover up stems and florist foam by gluing Spanish moss on top.

Cover: Glue jar lid to inside of ring. Use knife to cut a 1/2- x 2-1/4- x 2-1/4-

inch piece of florist foam and glue to inside of ring..

Berry arrangement: For "soil", mix 3 table-spoons of coffee grounds with 3

tablespoons of Mod Podge. Without letting soil spill over ring, spread over

florist foam. Before soil dries, insert berries into foam, trimming as needed.

Center trellis behind berries & insert into foam. Let dry. Place cover into pot.*»

Materials needed: 4-1/2-inch-wide terra-cotta pot with saucer; paintbrushes—No. 2 liner and 1 -inch foam; acrylic craft paints—Wild Rice and Purple (Denise used Delta Ceram-coat paints); pencil; glue gun and glue sticks; large wide-mouth canning lid and ring; florist foam; serrated kitchen knife; coffee grounds; Mod Podge water-base de-coupage sealer; four wooden craft sticks; three bunches of artificial berries with greenery (Denise used blackberries and raspberries). SUNSET OF SUNRISE CHAPTER #2, Upper Mills, NB We are told in the beginning. The Hacker daughters of Custon Official Henry & Mrs. Hacker were employed in Lowell, Mass, and had joined "Puritan" Chapter. While enjoying a vacation at home, suggested the idea to the relatives of Alley Lodge to form an Eastern Star Chapter. Upper Mills and Baring, Maine were thriving villages with lumber and Box Milk, four grocery stores, a Methodist Church in Upper Mills & Baptist Church in Baring. Large schools in both villages. Later trains running each day carrying supplies and many employees to the new paper, box & paper bag mills in Woodland. The communities worked together as one in all local affairs. The idea of forming a Star Chapter grew and on June 2, 1911 a charter was granted with thirty members, functioning under the guidance of the General Grand Chapter in Washington, D.C. Many of that Grand Body visited Upper Mills until the New Brunswick Grand Chapter was formed in 1930. It was a grand success from the beginning with two meetings a month. The first Worthy Matron was Edith Chase, her brother Clifford Chase was Worthy Patron. Several names for the Chapter was suggested but Mrs. May Babcock's name "Sunrise" was chosen. Orion Chapter in Calais, Maine, was the mother chapter and although Baring, Maine, was under their jurisdiction, allowed waivers of jurisdiction all through the years so Sunrise remained an International Chapter. Strangely in 1949 Mary Wright and Harle Winslow, both American citizens, both residents of Baring, Maine were elected Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron of New Brunswick. Sunrise has been honored by two more of our members, Elizabeth Noddin, WGM in 1939 and Glendon Smith, WGP in 1955, also many others have held Grand Office and on many committees and grand representatives. Alley Lodge has always been real partners and fellow members. How can we express thanks for 73 years of harmonious partnership for a rent free, attractive hall. Every effort on their part to assist us. It is with deep regret that we find it difficult to continue, but circumstances beyond our control, location and time has taken its toll. Our grateful thanks to the local chapters who have assisted us and the many Grand Chapter officers and members for visiting us. We hope to continue visiting and perhaps affiliate with some other chapter later on. May 23rd, our last meeting was held with WM Rena Cloney, Jack Waller, WP as special guests. Gifts were presented. It was just a social affair. The box containing the articles to be sent to Grand Secretary and remaining regalia, electric star and floor labrinth stored for safekeeping in our hall closet. Bro. Wilbur McKay has the-key. For the time being we hope to continue PM Club to remember our ill or shut-in members. By for now. - E. Noddin, PGM

On May 15th an impressive program was enjoyed by the members of the O, E. S., when members from all parts of the Province met in the Upper Miramichi Regional High School in honor of Hillcrest #40 receiving their Charter.
