Are you looking for a careerchange? Making up lost time?Do you need a slip of paper to
get that promotion, or maybe youwant a new hobby, or to develop yourlanguage skills? Whatever your aims,you probably have too many respon-sibilities to drop everything and headoff back to college. Entering full timeeducation can mean hefty debts, astruggle to make ends meet and dis-connection from a successful careerpath: a serious lifestyle commitment.Evening courses, on the other hand,might take up a small chunk of freetime and a little cash, but don’trequire you to drasticallychange your life.
Evening courses might not re-quire the same sacrifices asgoing full time, but that doesn’tlimit what you can achieve: it’spossible to spend your eveningsdoing anything, right up to be-coming a doctor, though it’lltake a little longer than the in-tensive route. Another majorbenefit of an evening educationis an entirely different learningenvironment. With many stu-dents having been out of formaleducation for significant periodsof time, group classes tend toproduce a more mature atmos-phere. Students understandeach other’s apprehensionwhen it comes to learning, andmany describe their classmatesas supportive and dedicated.Many late night time studentsarrive after a full days work,have limited time to completeassignments and juggle numer-ous other responsibilities intheir lives, but still enjoy com-plete courses, and do so suc-cessfully. Students tend to comefrom a much wider range of agegroups: age, as they say, is no
barrier to learning.If you’re looking to gain a high level
qualification you’ll have to planahead, as most providers of univer-sity-level courses run their eveningcourses on a similar schedule to theuniversities themselves, commencing
in September or January each year.You’ll also need to think carefullyabout your long term future, as un-dertaking a high level evening coursemay require you to live near to thelearning centre for a substantialamount of time. When studying in theevening, for example, PhDs regularlytake at least 6 years to complete.Most universities now run a few oftheir regular courses with night timeoptions, so your local university is agreat place to start the search. Bysigning up with a major university,you’ll gain access to the extensive fa-
cilities (and perks) available to the fulltime students, and benefit from theuniversities reputation. Most coursesat this level require prior lower levelqualifications or extensive relevantexperience, though if you’re doingsomething with a business focus, de-cent management experience is oftenmore than enough.
If you want that advanced qualifica-tion, but the universities are just toofar away (or you prefer to move atyour own pace) there’s always thestudy from home option. This marketis dominated by the likes of the OpenUniversity, whose courses include al-most anything that can be done with-out extensive onsite tutoring.Advanced photography, design and in-novation, criminology and even aPGCE (teaching qualification) are allavailable. Whilst there are some time
restrictions, courses run bycentres like theOU are by farthe most flexible,as you’ll able todo everythingfrom your own
living room, largely as and when youwant to. You might not ever meetyour tutors, but they will act as use-ful hands on guides via the Internet.Should it all get too much, you’ll evenhave the option to leave it alone for afew months.
For most people, the thought of afull on diploma, let alone masters orPhD, might be too much to contem-plate. If you’re looking for somethinga little less long term and a little lessstrenuous, commonly available op-tions include short courses, manyonly a few weeks in length, thesecover subjects such as languages (atall levels), writing (a subject in whichthe Irish Writer’s Centre in Dublin at-tracts particularly prestigious eveninglecturers), philosophy, music, childcare and film studies. Universities arean equally valuable resource in thesekind of areas, though you may findthat smaller, private schools and spe-cialised centres offer more flexibilitywhen it comes to schedules andcourse length. For subjects like lan-guages and music, private tutors(check the local papers) can producetailor made classes at affordable
prices, especially if you can form agroup to study together.
Dublin is an obvious centre for Ire-land’s evening courses, offering a hugevariety of topics at varying levels overdozens of institutions, large and small.Elsewhere, the better known collegesin Galway, Limerick, Cork and Dun-dalk all offer impressive evening op-tions, as do private schools inWaterford, Sligo and Roscommon(amongst many other areas). If you’rebased in a more remote area, youmay be able to find more limitedcourses on offer at local schools orthrough private tutors, but will haveto travel or enrol on a distance learn-ing course to experience more indepth and intensive subject matter.
Just for fun, or as an exercise in CVbuilding and personal development,the large and varied selection ofevening courses on offer around Ire-land are likely to fulfil your educa-tional needs without interfering withyour career. From cheap, large-groupcourses lasting a few weeks to a fullon doctorate that can take severalyears, there’s plenty on offer to pleaseeveryone.
