Fiona and her flamingo friends’ front lawn fl ocking has captured some $500 to help the Etobicoke Girls Softball League absorb recently reduced city sports fi eld fees being introduced next year.

The wooden Fiona and her 10 pink fl amingoes pop up on unsus-pecting homeowners’ front yards under cover of night complete with an explanatory letter in their mail-box. For a donation, homeowners

can choose a friend’s house for Fiona and the fl amingoes’ next fl ocking.

The campaign is expected to continue through autumn.

“Fiona is still making the rounds,” said Wanda Benedek, a longtime assistant coach with the league. “We’re still getting a positive response. We’re hoping it keeps going. A lot of people are talking about her. We hear them out in the park (while playing softball games).”

Benedek pitched the unique fundraiser to the league’s execu-

Since it began, no fl ocked home-owner has donated less than $20.

Before its summer break, Toronto City Council reduced the fees being introduced next year for the use of currently free city sports fi elds by youth leagues.

CYNTHIA REASON [email protected]

Are you crazy?Not surpris-

ingly, that was the most common response Etobicoke lawyer Mark Johnson received when he told family and friends he planned to run with the bulls of Pamplona to raise money for a school in India.

Amused – and not in the least deterred – by the question, Johnson answered with a resound-ing ‘yes’ early last month by running not once, but twice with the bulls during Pamplona’s annual San Fermin Festival.

And he has the YouTube video of his July 8 and 9 runs to prove it.

“Let me first say that the bulls are not your real risk to life and limb – it’s the other runners,” he told The Guardian this week, shortly after returning from the birthday trip to Spain with his wife, Nina. “It’s like being in a crowded theatre when someone yells ‘fire’ or like being in one of those Hollywood disaster movies when the flood waters come rushing in or the aliens start vaporizing buildings.”

To see Johnson’s ‘mad dash for survival’ – filmed with a rear-facing, head-mounted video camera – go to www.kovalum.com

“It’s the only time in my life that I have actually run out of fear,” Johnson recalled laughing. “There

are bodies all around on the ground, you’re jump-ing over people, then you start to hear the cowbells around the bulls’ necks. Then people really start to pick up speed...You’re only exposed to the bulls for about five or six seconds, but it is such an adrenaline rush.”

The outlandish idea to run with the bulls as a fundraiser for the Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) school project in India was a natural one for Johnson, who wanted to marry one of the items on his ‘bucket list’ with his continuing efforts to help give kids living in poverty a break.

Through his part-time, sideline business Kovalum – a Canadian clothing label named after and inspired by a beach near the south-ern Indian hometown of his in-laws – Johnson cur-rently already supports a girls’ orphanage in India by donating 10 per cent of the label’s proceeds.

With the running of the bulls fundraiser, Johnson

has now expanded his philanthropy to include a small, 120-pupil school in the village of Kalvilai, located in the poverty-stricken region of Thoothukudi, India.

So far, his feats of daring have raised close to $5,300 towards the purchase of computers, audio and visual equipment, reading materials and teaching aids to outfit the school’s resource library. To donate, go to www.kovalum.com

While Johnson said his mother – fearful for her son’s life – was not at all supportive of his dangerous fundraising methods, he hopes his own kids Lily, 8, and Daniel, 6, will learn an important lesson about the importance of giving back from their dad’s fundraiser.

“I think it’s important to give back to the commu-nity and to the world, and supporting a small school in India is something that I think we can have an impact on,” he said. “I’m not trying to save the world, I’m just trying to give these kids a bit of a break.”

Age: 17Event: Rhythmic GymnasticsEtobicoke roots:I was born in Ukraine and have lived in Etobicoke since 2004. Approximate date(s) for preliminary competition in London: Aug. 9 and 10; finals set for Aug. 12Online presence: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Canadian-Senior-Group/145300302204284

Q&A:

1. What are you most looking forward to at the Games?

For me, competing at the Olympic Games is a dream that I had since I first came to the gym at the age of five. Now I am close to fulfilling my dream. I am looking forward to performing at the Games as best as I can to represent Canada. I also will be looking forward to meeting athletes from around the world in the Olympic village and having fun.

2. What’s your training strat-egy?

As part of the rhythmic gymnastics team I train four to five hours a day, six days a week during the normal schedule. Training becomes even more intense before major sport events and lasts eight hours a day. My training strategy is the following: full concentration during every training, setting a goal for each training session, and fulfill-ing that goal, which keeps me motivated.

3. Reflections on how far you’ve come?

I started training as an indi-vidual rhythmic gymnast at Seneca Rhythmic Gymnastics Sport Program. After four years I started training at Kalev Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy. At the Pan American Championship 2010, I made two finals in hoop and ball

routines as an individual. After the championship I was selected to be part of Canadian Senior Group.

For every professional ath-lete, the ultimate goal is the Olympic Games. After accom-plishing this long journey to become a part of the Canadian Olympic team, I feel a big responsibility to represent my country at this highest level sport event. Since the Olympic Games in 1996, when rhythmic gymnastics made the debut for the first time, the Canadian team earned the berth in the Olympics during the 2011 World Championship in France. I am proud that in this success there is also a part of my work.

4. What would you like to say to the folks back home?

I would like to say thank you to all the people who worked together to make this happen: my coaches, parents, and Gymnastics Canada. I want to say that I will give my everything to give the best performance I can. Please believe in our team and cheer for us.

5. Trivia: Before every competition I

think about the time I spent in the gym and I tell myself: you’ve done hard work in training, now you are ready to show what you can do. This actually works for me.

There are three kinds of news. There’s news that touches a person intimately. There’s news that might spark a passing interest as long as the

topic is hot. And then there’s the topic, irrelevant per-haps to everyday life, but as a curiosity piques one’s attention for a short period of time.

The Olympics are the third kind of news. Sure, some sports fans will follow the U.S. basket-ball dream team’s activities; others may follow a Canadian sports personality like cyclist/skater Clara Hughes.

But during the Games, sud-denly our attention turns to a variety of athletics not necessar-ily visible in our communities or seen regularly in the sports reports. Judo? Swimming?

Great fodder for two weeks, for people with national pride yet no usual daily interest in the sporting world.

But these events help bring a city to life. Think of the vibrancy of Vancouver during the past Winter Games. Look at the spectacle created these days in London. In 2015, we’ll have a very visible spot on the world stage with the Pan/Parapan American Games held in Toronto and outlying regions. Those games will be very visible in Toronto, with 10,000 athletes from 41 countries competing in 48 sporting events. It will be quite a celebration for nationals and immi-grants from other lands in the Americas, watching “hometown” participants.

But we’d like to remind you of another important, prestigious set of games going on in Toronto later this month.

The Ontario Summer Games, drawing 2,500 young athletes from across the province, will be held at 18 venues across the city Aug. 16 to 19. These are the young stars in 21 different sports – and this has been an early test for quite a number of athletes who have gone on to Olympic stardom.

This will be a chance to see some of the sports most people don’t often view – and a chance to cheer and encourage young athletes who don’t always have exposure. The Ontario Summer Games are a great opportunity for them to develop a public and visible face. We encourage you to consider attending some of the games events as part of your summer plans. It’s an opportunity to explore venues within your own city, and learn about unfamiliar sports. Summer in the city. So much to see, so much to do. Visit the Ontario Summer Games website at www.ontario-summergames.ca and plan to make this event part of your summer adventure.

Toronto’s new chief planner has a tough job

Make Ontario Summer Games part of your plans

our VIEW

Check out the athletes, venues here in Toronto

At long last, the City of Toronto found a chief planner.

Even though the job pays about $200,000 per year, it is not surprising that the position took so long to fill. For months the city has been advertising, then invit-ing promising candidates for interviews. What some saw, turned them off. In one instance, a candidate left after watching council and reflecting on the very public termination of the TTC’s top manager.

But there is more to the vacancy story than worries about the professional envi-ronment and job security. And in that story is why the ability of the chief planner matters to all of us.

The position looks after three main functions. Perhaps simplest of all is the challenging responsibility for about 350 staff, plus the daunting task of ensur-ing planning applications are processed in a timely manner.

Never an easy assign-ment, there must be additional stress because planning is often first in line when budgeters look for savings, yet last when the

city considers investment or recruitment.

Next up the scale in difficulty is the chief plan-ner’s responsibility for transforming our city. We want beautiful but func-tional buildings, attractive streetscapes that allow easy movement, and an urban form that changes with demographics, economics and vision. Meeting the future requires a host of skills, including resilience and self-confidence.

There is a third part of the job, which is the need to change the application approval process. Presently it is so dysfunctional yet so self-serving, that stakehold-ers pretend that resolution is beyond the city’s jurisdic-tion, perhaps so that reform never happens.

Specifically, the problem is reliance on the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to enforce the city’s own rules.

In theory, planning rules should be understandable to anyone with access to the internet or library. Practically, even simple and compliant projects can run afoul of any neighbour with a grudge or a councillor’s whim. On larger invest-ments, fees such like those supposedly for community benefits vary so widely, that making budgets for them is next to impossible.

Accountability is made more difficult through the combination of a council-lor’s unquestioned domina-tion of his or her fief, plus planning staff who may wish to be agreeable to a councillor with whom they will deal with for years, and who reviews their budgets line by line.

These difficulties invite so many questionable prac-tices, yet unfortunately suit so many.

Blaming the OMB is easy. Councillors support city wide policies, yet oppose those same rules when applied to their constitu-ents.

Unlike her predecessors, the new chief planner, Jennifer Keesmaat, comes from outside the organiza-

tion and just might take on the toughest challenges.

She may wish to begin building independence by regularly circulating her staff. Bankers and auditors learned this lesson long ago.

Next comes the task of convincing council to allow larger projects to be decided centrally. And finally comes the hardest task of all, which is to get executive com-mittee to approve council committees solely for plan-ning applications. Although it sounds so basic, council and planning can only re-establish their credibility by ensuring the rules council itself sets will be the criteria by which applications are judged.

The chief planner’s posi-tion in Toronto is a tough job, with opportunities and risks lurking everywhere. How it is filled impacts so much, from signature build-ings and how we enjoy our city, all the way to getting approval for home renova-tions.

We wish her well.n

Benedek and her two daughters all play softball.

The flamingoes are the league’s deliberate attempt to fundraise, rather than raise registration fees, to pay for next year’s new sports field fees.

Benedek plans to make Fiona and the flamingoes an annual fundraising and marketing campaign for the league.

Mid-month resale figures releasedGreater Toronto realtors reported 3,679 sales through the first 14 days of July 2012, representing a 5.6 per cent in-crease compared to the 3,484 sales reported for the same period in 2011. New listings were up by 14.4 per cent over the same time frame.

“Housing demand remained strong in the first half of July. Sales growth oc-curred in the regions surrounding the

City of Toronto, ” says Toronto Real Estate Board ( TREB) President Ann Hannah. The average selling price in the first half of July 2012 was $473,466 – up by 2.3 per cent compared to last year. On average, homes sold for 98 per cent of the asking price in 25 days – in line with July 2011.

Price growth was strongest in the City of Toronto, climbing by 3.5 per cent

to $496,645.“A better supplied market contrib-

uted to a slower annual rate of price growth in July relative to the first half of 2012,” said Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. “As buyers benefit from more choice in the second half of this year, expect price growth to slow to a more sustainable pace.”

Susan came to us in trouble. She hadn’t seen a dentist for

over 10 years and now she hadmultiple broken teeth.

As a Registered Nurse, Susanwas an everyday hero. Alwaysbusy taking care of the needs ofothers, she didn’t have enoughtime left to pay attention to herown needs.

FEELING EMBARRASSED

Susan felt ashamed of hercondition. She was afraid of los-ing all her teeth and worried thather overall health was suffering.

As a result of years of avoid-ance and procrastination, Susanbecame increasingly anxiousabout seeking a dentist. The con-sequences caught up with herand she become so ashamed ofher teeth she wouldn’t smile anddidn’t want to go out with friends.

FINDING HOPE

Susan decided to take initiative. She researched her options, foundour website and called our hotline.

The first step was to let herknow that it was okay to feel theway she did and to offer supportin helping her move forward. She needed guidance fromsomeone who could empathize

with her situation, explain op-tions and recommend a suitablecourse of action.

SHE CRIED TEARS OF JOY

Once her challenges wereidentified (which weren’t nearlyas bad as she had imagined),andthe path forward was illuminat-ed,Susan felt tremendous relief.

Within days, Susan was takingsmall steps forward and she feltthrilled about the improvements.

Susan’s fear of dentists soonmelted away. Trips to the dentaloffice became easier with eachvisit and she began to glow asshe was finally able to smile with-out reservation.

You see, dentistry is morethan restoring health- it’s aboutrescuing smiles. With renewedconfidence and self-esteem, yourpassion for life flows again.Beforelong, she got back her health, hersmile, and her sense of well-being.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Stay safe under the sunOntario’s doctors want you to be sun safe this summer. That’s why the Ontario Medical Association is reminding people about the importance of protecting their skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

As many as 1,000 Canadi-ans will die from skin cancer in 2012. In fact, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers account for more diagnoses than lung, breast and prostate cancer combined.

Ultraviolet (UV) exposure and

sunburns are major contribu-tors to the development of skin cancer. Both UVA (the rays that cause aging) and UVB (that rays that cause sunburns) can cause cancer, so it’s essential to choose the right sunscreen. Dermatologists recommend SPF 30, but make sure it is a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. It is also very important that both adults and kids apply sunscreen liberally and reapply

at least every two hours.”If your family will be spending

time in the sun, here are five easy ways to be safe:

• Avoid sun exposure during the peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Use a multi-spectrum sun-screen with an SPF 30

• Apply sunscreen liberally and reapply at least every two hours

• Reapply sunscreen more often if you or your kids are swimming

City

DAVID NICKLE [email protected]

The last time Jennifer Keesmaat drew a City of Toronto paycheque was the late 1990s when she worked as an executive assistant for two city coun-cillors: New Democrat Joe Mihevc, and Progressive Conservative coun-cillor Jane Pitfield.

“So I did both sides (of the political spectrum),” she recalls in an interview that took place just hours after the city announced the planning consultant’s return to city hall on Tuesday – where she’ll serve as chief planner for the administration of Mayor Rob Ford.

At first glance, it doesn’t seem to be a perfect fit.

Keesmaat, a principal in the Dialog consulting group, has publicly advo-cated for pedestrian-friendly neigh-bourhoods, most notably in a TED talk extolling the virtues of having one’s children walk to school. She supports what she calls “fair pricing” of things like roads and other munici-pal services, and is an admirer of London’s downtown congestion tax. She is a believer in the value of cycling and public transit infrastructure.

Mayor Ford, meanwhile, has opposed road tolls as a tax grab, and during the 2010 election promised

to not only stop the light rail transit plan unfolding in Scarborough, but reduce the number of bike lanes in the city.

Some might call the match something of a dichotomy. Not Keesmaat.

“I don’t think it has to be a dichotomy,” she says. “I think it’s a really important part of city build-ing – ensuring that people have lots of choices.

“What I hear in that story line about cars – this is what I hear, ‘I get around in my car and it’s dif-ficult because there are cyclists in the way.’ From a planning perspective, I say let’s make it easier for every-one to get around. Some people will always drive their cars, and maybe they should drive their cars. But they should have choices. Transportation planning is about adding choices and to take transit, or live in a higher density community and walk, is a choice.”

In her capacity as a planning con-sultant, Keesmaat has worked with municipalities across the country and around the world.

Here, she’s worked on initiatives in major cities including Mississauga, Vancouver, London and Halifax and most recently founded the group

Project Walk – promoting better understanding of pedestrian issues through various means.

Keesmaat was hired to replace retiring chief planner Gary Wright, and will be taking the city through some fairly dramatic change. The portfolio includes not only land-use planning, but also transporta-tion planning and the city’s central waterfront.

“My sense of the task before us is that we need to make some pretty

bold decisions, we’re going to take some risks – we’re going to need to be inventive and embrace new kinds of collaborations.”

Keesmaat is not the first chief plan-ner to draw this conclusion. One of her predecessors, Paul Bedford, was a prime advocate for plans to tear down the Gardiner Expressway in the name of opening up the city’s waterfront.

During that debate, Keesmaat came with a different point of view. She and her group presented a report that explored the idea of actually leaving the Gardiner up, but re-con-figuring the public space beneath it to make it friendlier to pedestrians and cyclists, thereby linking the city with its waterfront.

Keesmaat insists that report wasn’t contrarian to Bedford’s vision.

“Where Paul and I might not agree on the specifics or a specific initia-tive – I think what Paul and I shared was a preoccupation with creating great spaces and a recognition that creating great places meant investing and adapting infrastructure. In terms of that trajectory, my philosophy is about creating great places where people will thrive – and typically these are places where there is tremendous diversity.”

Keesmaat will be dealing with some specific infrastructure issues right out of the gate.

In the fall, council will be taking another look at public transit infra-structure, after having sidestepped the issue in July.

Keesmaat will have to weigh in on questions of what additional transit improvements ought to go where; and along with the city manager’s office, how one pays for it.

While she hasn’t started the job yet, Keesmaat is a proponent of what she calls “fair pricing” for roads, admiring the effect that road pricing has had on congestion in London, England.

She’s also watched with interest as Los Angeles residents voted in a referendum in favour of a special transit tax levy.

“They had a referendum and the residents supported a tax, knowing it was dedicated to transit,” she says.

“There’s inspiration for us – but to get there you have to have the real conversation first. People need a lot of information, need to understand how things work – what’s currently subsidized and what isn’t. We need to enrich those conversations with real data.

Keesmaat will start work with the city Sept. 10.

It is with saddened hearts that Helene’s family announces her passing on July 29, 2012 in her 91st year.
