From the Presidents’ Desk…

Dear ASOC Members and Friends of our Society When I wrote my letter to you in May I had no pre-conception of the events that were going to take us all on the regrettable journey of deep sorrow felt by the loss of our dear companion and friend David Hatton. At the time I was pre-occupied with pulling together what I now see as something truly in the memory of its’ founder David, the Summer Art Experience. We had just completed the artwork for the advertisement that now occupies page 1 of the July Edition of the Aus-tralian Artist. In response, the Editor offered me the opportunity to invite our SAE tutors to write articles for the magazine through to December on the basis that these articles would also bear a reference to our SAE. Simultaneously, it occurred to me that a special “Tribute to David” might be something for the Editor to consider. Again, the response was highly supportive and I was asked to prepare an article illustrated with some of Da-vid’s paintings. There followed a period of discussion with Ursula (David’s wife), and access to a number of his art works, which I needed to process into digital form. I penned the “Tribute” and the Editor has recently informed me it will appear in the October edition of the Australian Artist. The brochure for SAE 2018 is now on the Web and the printed version is also available at the studio or upon request. I have taken the liberty of putting the enrolment form for the SAE at the end of this Newsletter for your reference on costs and procedures, but please either print or pick up a hard copy of the brochure, and most of all, let your friends know about it.

From the Presidents’ Desk cont…

The dates for SAE 2018 are January 8 – 12, 2018, and the location: Canberra College, Phillip. Be quick because enrolments have already started com-ing in. In this Newsletter I also have great pleasure of report-ing on the success of the ACT Region Catchment Groups Exhibition held in June at the Fitters Work-shop. Our throughput of interested art patrons was outstanding, close to 850, though this was sadly not reflected in higher than average sales levels. ALL our eyes should now be fixed on the Spring Exhibition 2017, 19 to 25 September 2017 at the Albert Hall. Do not forget that the Closing Date for Entries is Sunday 27th August, the same date as the AGM. Plans for the Spring Exhibition include celebration of our 90th Anniversary at an afternoon tea on Satur-day 23rd September. In addition, we are inviting “multi-decade” members and former members to write a one-page article entitled “My Art Journey”, illustrated with two to three of their finest works. If you know the contact address of any of our older former members please let me know as soon as possible. This group and existing members in the multi-decade membership class will also be the principle guests at our afternoon tea. We will establish a storyboard of the articles we receive, and are considering putting together a soft-cover story book if enough participants are forthcom-ing. Should everything go to plan at ASOC’s August AGM the Spring Exhibition will be an opportunity to meet and greet your New President and Management Committee. On that topic please get your nomination forms in well in advance of the AGM and not later than Monday 22nd August. Please note that the Manage-ment Committee will be posting the Auditor’s Report on our Financial Position, and any nominations re-ceived for “Life Membership”, on our Notice Board one month before the AGM. The other day I had the pleasure of bumping into Leigh Murray, and unassumingly she gave me some great news. Leigh is to take up an Artist-in-Residence posi-tion in Africa – at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Expect more from Leigh on African Botanicals, Wildlife and I suspect “Mountain scapes” in 2017 - 2018. Cranleigh School Raffle: You may remember that last year we tried to help out the Cranleigh School to re-establish their annual art exhibition.

Unfortunately, the Cranleigh exhibition will not take place in 2017, but we have suggested we can help out with donations of paintings from ASOC for a special Art Raffle. If you have a painting you would like to donate for purposes of raising funds for the Cranleigh School could you please let me know as soon as possible so that I can coordinate with our contacts at the School. We will sell the tickets at our Spring Exhibi-tion on behalf of Cranleigh so we need Title, Artist, and estimated value to prepare the “tickets”. I have one painting on board as we exchange this information. Good luck with your entries for the Spring Exhibition – you can enter a total of 6 paintings or 12 miniatures including a possible contribution to the “Selected Old Masters” category.

The ACT Region Catchment Groups

Exhibition and Prizes 2017As the days moved towards ASOC establishing this year’s exhibition in a new environment, the Fitters Workshop (next to the Glass Works) at Kingston, it became increasingly exciting because a number of new artists were attracted to the Open Competition. Twenty-nine artists entered 57 works, several of which comprised multiple paintings. Using our usual criteria of “one-square metre” several of these works were nicely ‘oversized’. The logistics of establishing the Exhibition in the Fitters Workshop involved moving a substantial number of our display boards and other equipment to “Fitters”. Happi-ly, the Catchment Groups met us there with a display of their activities and materials, which proved to be a real find for the “collectors” who visited. I can only hope that some of the collecting also led to some enrolments in the diverse tasks of the Catchment Groups. “Fitters” is a big barn of a place with excellent natural lighting augmented by good overhead lamps. The art works were shown off to full advantage in our display system. The reason I use the term “barn” is to add that apart from a generous distribution of electrical supply wall plugs there is little else in the building – at times it was especially cold as the days and evenings drew to a close. I want to thank a number of people for their contribu-tions in making the 2017 Exhibition the success that it proved to be. First, we need to thank our Sponsor Universal Express for providing the appropriate truck for our move, and for the “hard yakka” put in by our principal movers and builders - Mark Redzic, Bill Causbrook, Lucky Hua, Greg Rimes and on this occa-sion I’ll add myself. Bill and I took a further diversion from Cranleigh to pick up equipment like a few Tables,

an urn, display boards, though I had delivered the wide-screen TV and computer for our continuous display of Catchment Group activities earlier that day. When it came to the bump out a week or so later Mike Lester and Siva Nathan, along with Dave, the CEO of the Universal Express Group happily joined us. Lucky, who comes up from Jindabynne could not make it on the bump-out day. I then had the pleasure of calling in our judges and on this occasion I had asked Helen Musa to partner with Eleanor Gates Stuart, who has twice been a judge for the Waterhouse Prize. I said it on the Opening Night and I repeat it here that I do not think I have ever seen a more devoted pair of judges inspect the display of art works with such care and rigour, and it made me even happier to take on board their pronouncements of the four major prizes and their recommendations for “highly commended” certificates. Helen Musa did us the honour of being the Opening Speaker of the event and noted the “exceptional human dimension to landscape” that was to greet art patrons. Both judges were impressed by the high quality and technical expertise demonstrated in many of the 57 entries. I need not go on since Helen provid-ed an excellent summary of the proceedings in her City News article “Arts / Art meets the environment in ASOC show” of June 23, to be found at: http://citynews.com.au/2017/arts-art-meets-environment-asoc-show/ AND THE WINNERS WERE!

BEST-IN-SHOW Mark Redzic for the Oil “Exploring” The $2,000 Icon Water Prize

“A beautiful painting that gave the impression of the con-servationists with families learning about the environment – in this painting they seem to lift off the ground weight-

lessly”

The ASOC/Ginninderra Catchment Prize of $100 to Michaela Laurie for the Miniature “Listening to frogs”

“A delightful, whimsical work that drew in the viewer so

Incidentally, not only did Helen Musa’s timely City News Report of the 23rd attract attention to our Exhibition, but we also ran a short advertisement in the Sunday (25th) “Find Your Creative” Edition of the Canberra Times, designed to also attract patrons to our Spring Exhibition Birthday.

The ACT Region Catchment Groups Exhibition and Prizes 2017 cont…

From the perspective of how we choose to “measure success” of our exhibitions. One of our roles is un-doubtedly to inform the public about art and our activi-ties in art. In that context, the location of “Fitters” provided a weekend traffic flow of patrons we have not seen in a long while through an ASOC Exhibition. We attracted about 850 patrons, a large portion of whom came to view the Exhibition on the first “spectacular” Sunday, and all of whom voted for the Framing Pieces People’s Choice Award, presented by a count of votes after the 8 pm closure on Friday 30th June. The Win-ner of the People’s Choice Award was Lisa Gaston for her stunning acrylic painting: “WISDOM”. I hasten to point out that the People’s Choice was a close call with Siva Nathan’s work (above) placing a close second, and two of the works by Margaret Carr (“Murrumbidg-ee River” and “On the Old Fence”) coming a more distant third place. Unfortunately, the people traffic in the week following our “spectacular Sunday” was quite low suggesting that we should consider running a future show over two consecutive weekends if possible at “Fitters”. If our major criterion of success is based on “Sales”, ASOC did no better and no worse than we do on average at shows in these tightening economic times.

We sold seven works (slightly more than 12%) at a total value of $3,100. Oh yes, we signed up at least 4 new memberships at the event – another measure of success? I take this opportunity to thank Viv Pinder, Mark Redzic, Ian Trapnell and Sally Pearce for assisting with the hanging of the exhibition. Thanks also to the Causbrooks (Bill and Brigitte) for their contributions to manning the opening night “bar” and working exten-sively on the Duty Roster, but also to Rosemary White, Peter Schlumpp, Joan Fogarty, Isla Patterson, Ann Gould, Maureen Lawrentin, Dawn Wilson, Louise Cook, Jennifer Baird, Lisa Gaston, Natasha Verma, Val Johnson, Robyn Diener, Steve Davidson, Sandra House and Catherine Davies for performing their scheduled “duties”; and especially to Michaela Laurie for assisting with the catering at the opening. We (the Jones’) do need more help, especially with opening and closing the premises. Special thanks to ICON Water and the Catchment Groups for the prizes they provide, which helped make the 2017 event a success. ASOC is also indebted to the Universal Express Group and Framing Pieces for providing transport and the additional People’s Choice Award.

Drawing Creatively

Over the past few weeks our workgroup has explored diverse subjects and ways of mark making. Petri introduced basic watercolour elements, Beth organised two sessions of figure drawing, and Steve had us creating collages. This diversity should encourage all of us to be more adventurous and creative in our practice of drawing. Our group’s schedule follow school terms, but I encourage members to keep up the momentum during the school holidays. Which means as convenor I have to be a good model, which recently at the coast I was — thanks to the regular visits of an aged kangaroo. Tim Hardy

Seeing through Drawing – Tim Hardy

Beginners to Advanced 8 & 15 October 2017, 10am - 4 pm

ASOC Studio at M16 Artspace

$100 ASOC/CAW Members $140 Non-members

We are thrilled to have multi-award and prize-winning artist Tim Hardy coming to ASOC in October 2017 with an exciting drawing workshop Drawing is the most powerful way of learning to see objects more fully, and that is the focus of this workshop running over two days on consecutive Sundays. The first session is studio based, with a plein air workshop a week later. The workshop should enrich your work whatever your subject and whatever medium you employ. The workshop is espe-cially suitable for those at beginner and intermediate levels of drawing experience.

I: Studio Session We will do a series of challenging and fun exercises which will include contour drawing, capturing gestures, and creating tonal drawings. You will be encouraged to create lively sketches that capture the essence of various objects. We will use a variety of drawing media, including pencil, charcoal and ink.

II: Plein Air Session The plein air workshop is focused on seeing a landscape more fully, and builds on the activities of the first workshop. A series of techniques in drawing a scene will be demonstrated, and then you will be assisted in drawing landscape subjects of your own choice. Aspects of composition will also be considered. Your plein air sketches can be used and combined as the basis of a more controlled drawing.

Tim Hardy is passionate about the value of drawing, and is a multi-award winning artist, including a number of first prizes for his drawings and pastels. Earlier this year Tim was artist-in-residence at Tasmania’s Cataract Gorge.Tim is a very giving and sharing tutor and also convenes the popular ASOC workgroup, “Drawing Creatively”. The latter image may be too dark for the reader to discern, but that was part of its intrigue. The problem that I have with the Sulman is determining whether the paintings on display have been misplaced in their category, since several of the Sulman finalists are probably closer to the landscape and portrait categories.

The charabang tour continued with a visit to the Salon des Refusés 2014, up in the Rocks next to the old observation tower. The driver’s skills were fully tested as we squeezed our way through narrow alleys and sharp turns not built with the modern ‘chara’ in mind. The Refusés collection is described as the alternative Archibald and Wynne prize selection and results from a select panel vetting 884 Archibald and 669 Wynne entries to generate an exhibition of 58 works.

You might guess that many of these ‘rejects’ were equally good and some may say better than those at AGNSW. Unfortunately the freedom of access to reproduced photographs is not as easily available as from AGNSW and so I cannot show you any exhibits. But if you get the chance

to go and view Robert Hannaford’s portrait of Phillip Adams, and Raymond Kenyon’s orthographic projection of Ronaldo Giurola, one of the architects of the New Parliament House who today lives in Canberra, these are worth viewing and were just two of many admirable portraits on display. Of the landscapes I think it was Ann Grocott’s Memory Hill or Amanda Penrose Hart’s Untitled the hill, which was a colourful long-narrow painting that caught my eye. Notably at the Salon several of the paintings were for sale.

We left the Salon in heavy rain at about 3.30 pm, and arrived back in Canberra after a suitable pit-stop at 7.30 pm. Well done to Ben our much admired driver and to David for giving us all the opportunity to visit Archie and all. To CAW – let’s do more of these togetherness things.
