Practice owner Dr Bruce Wauchope and potential purchaser Dr Dervinder Singh Grewall are continu- ing negotiations for the sale this week with a new hand-over date set for early September. However, Dr Grewall advised The Monitor this week that he intends to begin consulting from the Roxby Downs Hospital this week. “Dr Wauchope and I are amicably sorting out the sale, but until then it is almost impossible to meet the needs of the Roxby Downs community with just one doctor.” Dr Grewal said. “I will be consulting from the hospital this week, and I hope to soon be joined by my associate Dr James Harrison Swao so, with Dr Armstrong, the commu- nity will have three doctors.” In contrast, Dr Wauchope claimed Dr Grewal’s fail- ure to complete the sale as scheduled last week has “destablised” the existing practice. “Arrangements were made for the handover...and the new doctors were to start on August 9, 2003,” he announced in a press release this week. “The Roxby practice had notified Dr Armstrong that he would no longer be required as well as practice staff...and the practice was prepared for sale and handover. “On August 8, 2003, the purchase requirements were not fulfilled and the practice was not able to be trans- ferred. This left the town potentially without doc- tors and so emergency arrangments were made and locums flown in.” Dr Armstrong will continue to practice at the Medi- cal Centre this week, and will be joined by a locum for the remainder of August. However, Dr Wauchope struck out at Dr Grewal claim- ing the delay has been “costly to the practice which has lost some of its trained, capable staff”. Richard Yeeles, a spokesman for WMC - one of the existing practice’s financial supporters - told The Monitor - “We’re concerned that there is uncer- tainty about the future of the practice, ” “We have spoken to both Dr Grewal and Dr Wauchope about our concerns.” The Roxby Downs Area School Primary Choir will sing at the annual Festival of Music in Adelaide next month. The 36-strong choir will join more than 400 other singers from public primary schools around SA. The group will peform in the Festival Theatre on Monday, September 15, followed by performance at several school as- semblies in Adelaide and some busking in Rundle Mall before returning home to Roxby Downs. Roxby Downs residentKerryn Rose passedaway on July 26, 2003,after battling for eightyears with a rare form ofcancer.Kerryn is known and re-membered locally for herlove of life and her in-domitable spirit.Kerryn, was a belovedwife to Warren and‘Mum’ to Josh and Callie- but she was a friend toeveryone. After 16 years in RoxbyDowns, there were fewpeople who hadn’t beenon the receiving end ofone of Kerryn’s gor-geous, warming smiles. Her ongoing battle wentunnoticed to most be-cause what the world

saw was a courageous, determined woman wholived life to the fullest. She was born on March29, 1964, the daughter ofVal and Les Hill, andgrew up in MountBarker.Always a keen sports-woman, Kerryn met hus-band-to-be Warrenthrough the MountBarker Football Club andhe whisked her away toLeigh Creek where theyworked together as care-takers for McMahons. The pair then lived at acamp at Wilpena Poundworking on the StonyPoint Pipeline, thenwent to WA and workedon the Dampier-PerthPipeline. They marriedin January, 1984, andmoved to Port Lincolnsoon after and begantheir family. Kerryn andthe children - Callie andJosh - moved to RoxbyDowns, to be with War-ren, in 1987, and made ahome for themselves to-gether.“She loved Roxby, it washer home, she was partof the town,” son Joshsaid. After a series of jobs atthe local pharmacy, Oa-sis and Tavern, Kerrynis best known as one ofthe smiling faces behindthe Milhinch Jewellerscounter in Roxby

Downs. Her close friends knewher as Zsa Zsa becauseof her love of all that glit-tered. But Kerryn didn’tjust want beautiful jew-els herself, she wantedeveryone to be able toenjoy them. There’s many a localhusband who wenthome with a lighter wal-let but a happy partneras a result of Kerryn’scharms. Her presencewill always be theredown that main street.Kerryn was a regular onthe local netball and bas-ketball courts for manyyears, including playingfor the Phantoms, DeepPurple and the Destroy-ers.In later years she wasbetter know for coachingand supporting her chil-dren in their juniorsports. She was always a keensport supporter and anactive member of theRoxby Districts FootballClub where the family arerecognised as life mem-bers.As the coaches’ wife sheentertained, cooked andconsoled the man young‘Miners’ who were wel-comed into her home.Family was Kerryn’s pas-sion and she extendedthat love to the familiesof her friends.

She didn’t want thanksor recognition - she justwanted to make a fabu-lous home for her familyand friends - and shewas happy to invite eve-ryone in to share it.But for husband Warrenand children Callie andJosh, she was both theheart and the backboneof their family.“I think she has leftsomething special be-hind in our children,”Warren said. “Our kidsare sharers and givers, like Kerryn, and that’swhat she instilled in allof us.”And like Kerryn, Callieand Josh continue tomake the most of theirlives since the passingof their mother lastmonth.Callie is now beginninga career in marketing, while Josh has beentagged to train and playwith the family’s favour-ite SANFL team - Sturt.Achievements Kerrynwould be proud of.Kerryn will be remem-bered by all as a personwho has made signifi-cant contributions to atown and community sheloved. Her warmth, generosityand friendship will be inour hearts and memoriesfor ever - a truly inspira-tional person.

ROXBY DOWNS…Roxby Downs’ onlypracticing female GP intends to continue treat-ing patients locally despite the imminent saleof the Roxby Downs Medical Practice.Dr Wendy Strachan voiced her concerns forthose patients who would prefer to see a fe-male doctor, following negotiations to sellthe practice to Port Augusta’s Dr DervinderGrewal this month.“I think it is important to have a female prac-titioner as an option for those people whoare more comfortable with a woman GP,” DrStrachan said.“That’s a real issue in Roxby Downs withsuch a large proportion of the female commu-nity pregnant or trying to get pregnant – someof those women just aren’t comfortable go-ing to see a male doctor.”Dr Strachan consulted in Roxby Downs thismonth in cooperation with the former prac-tice-lessees Dr Robert Armstrong and DrMichael Coward - but she is now prepared tostrike out on her own.“I was doubtful as to whether I would con-tinue visiting Roxby Downs,” she told TheMonitor last week.“But my experience this week has been of

ROXBY DOWNS…StBarbara’s Parish is call-ing for donations of cas-sette and CD players tobring a little music intothe lives of Baxter De-tention Centre’s inmates.Sister Anne Higgins, who has been workingwith refugees atWoomera and Baxter De-tention Centre for almostfour years, has called onthe community to makedonations of workingCD and cassette players– and even computers.“A little music can do alot to relieve the mo-notony of life for thoseheld in the centre,” Sis-ter Anne said.Sister Anne’s greatestconcern is for the manyyoung men in the cen-tre, in their early 20s, whohave been incarceratedas long as three yearswithout any relief fromthe centre.“There have been someopportunities foryounger children toleave the centres by at-tending school, but theyoung men haven’t beenable to step outsidethose four fence lines,”she said. “They’re con-fined with very few ac-tivities.”“We’ve received somesupport from the parish, but we can’t continue toprovide for these peoplewithout the help of thewider community.”In addition to workingCD and cassette players, the parish has also putthe call out for dona-tions of computers.“I’m hoping there arepeople out there whohave bought new mod-els of CD-players andcomputers and have puttheir outmoded onesaside,” Sister Anne said.“The computers don’thave to be much – justplay a few games and dosome word-processing.“The cassette and CD-players just have to bein good working order.”Donations can be madeto the Parish School inRoxby Downs, or StMichael’s CatholicChurch in Woomera.RoxFM station managerDeb Paliska – herself arecently-released inmateof Baxter Detention Cen-tre – attested to the factthat access to music andother sources of Austral-ian culture is scarce inthe detention centre.RoxFM, under the lead-ership of Mrs Paliska, will also be collectingtapes, CDs and videos tosupport St Barbara’s Par-ish drive. “We’re lookingto do something regu-larly,” Mrs Paliska said.“I know when I was inBaxter I gave away about75 CDs and they werejust thrilled. WOOMERA…The Woomera Astronomy Group willhost a ‘viewing of Mars’ at the Baker Observatorywhen Mars draws its closest to Earth in 73,000 yearsthis month. The public viewing marks ‘the opposition of Mars’on Friday, August 29, from 6pm. For laymen – thatmeans Mars will line up with Earth in orbit. While Mars opposes Earth every 15 to 20 years, thisyear’s opposition is one of the closest ever – andthe best opportunity in our lifetime to get close to‘the Red Planet’.This celestial event actually occurs on Friday, Au-gust 29 – and the Baker Observatory will open itsdoors to the public on that day, from 6pm.However, WAG members and the Woomera Boardwill mark the event with a public viewing and barbe-cue, for the cost of a gold coin donation, from 6pmthe following Saturday. The public viewing marks a significant milestone inWAG’s plans to build an internationally-recognisedpublic observatory in Woomera.“We’ve been having bookings every night of tour-ists, non-stop - people from all over Australia andeven the UK stop by to visit and use the telescope,”WAG chairman Rob Lockyer said.“At the moment our 10 inch telescope fully func-tional and we’ve started internal work on the DalyTheatre but we’re hindered by funding restrictions.“We’re still hunting for funding for our larger ob-servatory plans – but we’ve come to the belief thatwe’re not going to get our funding in one lump sumand we’re going to have to aim for a series of grantsand sponsorships to make it happen.”WAG tabled a proposal, early this year, outliningplans for a $320,000 observatory facility comprisinga star theatre, lecture hall, planetarium and four tel-escopes ranging in size from the current 10 inchmodel, to a NASA-quality 32 inch model. While the initial response to the proposal was posi-tive, funding has been scarce. However, Mr Lockyer believes the response toWAG’s initial publicity has highlighted that there isa national and international audience for a service ofthis kind in Woomera.WAG volunteers are currently conducting toursthrough the observatory most nights. In addition to local commercial accommodation, StMichael’s School Camp will open its doors for theevent at a cost of $10 per person per night, on Fri-day, Saturday and Sunday. Bookings can be madeby phoning St Barbara’s Parish School – 8671 3207.For more information or to book a tour, contact theWoomera Heritage Centre – ph 8673 7042.

ROXBY DOWNS...Council-owned internet serv-ice provider Roxbydowns Dot Net will close thismonth.Roxby Downs Municipal Council AdministratorBill Boehm announced that the service was nolonger viable, this month. The move comes as a result of increased compe-tition through new regional service providers andthe local introduction of ADSL broadband.“We have been able to operate reasonably suc-cessfully for the past 19 months, but changes inthe industry has made it difficult for a small playerto compete,” Mr Boehm said. The Roxbydowns Dot Net service was originallyestablished by council as an extension of thebusiness’ purchase of suitable equipment tomeet its own needs.Mr Boehm said the council had explored a vari-ety of options to allow the service to remain op-erating locally but that the internet industry hasbecome too competitive for rural providers.Roxbydowns Dot Net account holders shouldcontact Council IT Manager David Hallett formore information about the changes - ph 86710010.

SCHOOL SNIPPETS!

This community page is paid for by the Roxby Downs Area School

Dear School Community MembersCongratulations to Mr Tobias O’Connor who hasrecently won an Information and CommunicationTechnology (computers) coach position within ourFar North district. This means he will be training stafffrom our school and others in our district in the useof computers and the internet at various timesthroughout the rest of this year. Another example ofthe talented staff we have! The school’s major redevelopment program hasreached the official hand-over stage. Each of ournew areas are looking fantastic with staff and stu-dents eager to shift in.We wish to thank everyone for their patience duringthe disruptions from any of the building work. I amsure that these additions will greatly enhance ourschool and the students general learning environ-ment.With such wonderful facilities we will need to takeparticular care of our school. We are all indeed fortu-nate to have such facilities available for our chil-dren’s learning. We ask that everyone contributesto School Watch and contacts the Police to reportany suspicious activity occurring after hours.Bullying is an issue that concerns whole communi-ties, both school and the wider community.Roxby Downs Area School has taken a decisive standbased on the belief that all relationships should bepositive and no person should have to tolerate bul-lying.There are several strands to this policy which ad-dresses the needs of those who are subjected tobullying and those who are bullies. Both of thesegroups receive counselling to assist them to copewith what is happening and make necessary changes. These programs are managed by staff whose pre-dominant role in the school is the health and welfareof young people. At the forefront are staff with acounselling role (Mrs Bennie and Mr Knill) but allmembers of management and the wider staff have arole to play. The response to bullying is a clear cut and consist-ent one. The message to bullies is strong; that suchbehaviour will not be tolerated and that there areconsequences. Bullies will face a range of conse-quences determined by the length and severity oftheir negative behaviour including formal warnings, parental contact, detentions and even suspensions. The predominant message we want to give is thatschool is a safe place to be where students are sup-ported and bullies are not tolerated.Quality AssuranceBy now 55 randomly selected families should havereceived a letter asking them to participate in theschool’s Annual Quality Assurance Survey. All sur-vey answers are confidential. The Quality Assurance Questionnaire is extremelyimportant as it helps determine school directions fornext year and years to come. These survey’s attemptto gauge the school climate, quality of teaching, learning outcomes, student reporting, general envi-ronment, customer responsiveness and overall gen-eral satisfaction.

With Saturday, August16, looming closer, it isonly days before RoxbyDowns is on the statecalendar with the stag-ing of its annual race day.Ten years ago, a coupleof good-looking, well-re-spected locals wereproud to accept the in-augural registered cupfor their racehorse ‘Ac-robat’.This year, the cup hascome a long way, attract-ing its first internationaljockey as well as a hostof well-known Austral-ian competitors.Over the years the re-spective committees ofthe club have workedhard towards buildingthe track, infrastructureand the grounds in gen-eral, however, the lastcouple of years therehas been a notablechange in the perceptionof our race day.“The club was under thespot light in a number ofways last year as towhether the 2001 cancel-lation was a ‘once-off’ orwhether it was not viableto race here in Roxby,”Roxby Downs and Dis-tricts Racing Club presi-dent Stu Cormack said.“But now, as we nearnext weekend’s meet allthe vibes from aroundtown, Adelaide and sur-rounding areas point tothis year being a big one.“We as a club are striv-ing to make this one ofthe feature events of theyearly country race cir-cuit, and I believe thatwe will achieve this overthe next couple of

years.”Hard work by the com-mittee and other volun-teers has also seen anumber of significantprojects take place atthe track including, bol-lards, the supply of wa-ter to the bars, stairs, greenery and a programof general improve-ments.“Shade has always beena big concern,” MrCormack said.“Those who went to theGymkhana in Aprilwould have seen thatover 150m2 of shadesails have now been in-stalled covering thebookmakers’ arena and

other areas.“Marketing and adver-tising is another areawe have worked on.“Locally, 35,000 piebags were distributedhere and around thestate from Port Pirie andthe Flinders, up toMarla and Broken Hill, over to Ceduna and allthrough Port Augustaand Whyalla.“We enhanced our in-formation on theinternet and sent bro-chures all around theracing industry - let’shope this was no-ticed!”As with any majorcountry event , nothing

can be achieved with outthe army of helpers andthe sponsors, the commit-tee can do so much, how-ever these people andcompany’s ensure thatthe day happens and thatit is a success.“Success is measured byeveryone coming out tothe track, enjoying them-selves and returninghome safely.“It can not be empha-sized enough how grate-ful the club is to all ofthose who support themeet and assist in stag-ing it.“We hope to see you allout there on the day.”

Race weekend will kick off with theCalcutta at the Roxby Downs Clubon Friday night.Horses will be ‘auctioned’ off by rac-ing celebrity Phil McEvoy who, againthis year, will be a guest of the club.Race Day, Saturday starts in town at10am, with the Chicken and Cham-pagne Breakfast for the ladies.Gates at the track open at 9.30am andbuses will start running from 11am toget the punters warming up on theinterstate races.Hit the three on-course bookmakersor the tote to see if you can win.Grab a handy meal at the ‘Hairy Crack

Diner’ or enjoy a drink at the publicbar, or the private bar for members.Ensuring race-goers have the energyfor a long day of punting andpartying, St Barbara’s CatholicChurch will provide sandwiches, piesand pasties on the day, with refresh-ments.The best-dressed ladies will bejudged just before the running of thecup with the winner receiving a $500Myers Voucher from Allstaff Re-sources.Finish the day off at the Race ClubBall at the Tavern with Boris Loves toBoogie.

August is PetDental MonthEveryone is aware of the need to clean their teeth daily and to see the dentist regularly, however, most people forget about their pets’ teeth. Pets need healthy teeth too and arecent survey showed that by the age of two, three quarters of cats and dogs have thefirst signs of tooth decay.

CHILDREN’S COLOURING COMPETITIONAs part of Pet Dental Month, we are running a colouring competition for children withsome great prizes for the best entry. Just colour-in the drawing opposite - on the Mini-Monitors page, write you name, age and phone number on it and drop it into the box atthe Roxby Downs Veterinary Clinic, Richardson Place, to enter the competition.

So what happens to your pet’s teeth?Firstly, just like us, plaque builds up on theteeth and you may notice that your pet’sbreath doesn’t smell nice.As the plaque and bacteria build up, theteeth start to decay and the plaque hard-ens to form Tartar. As the tooth decayprogresses, the teeth become painful andyour pet’s eating habits change.Bacteria from the decaying teeth enter theblood stream, causing heart, lung, liver andkidney disease and your pet becomes sub-dued, which owners often attribute to “get-ting old” instead of “tooth decay”.How do I know if my pet has toothdecay?Your pet will have bad breath from the bac-

teria feeding off the plaque in it’s mouth.Lift the lip and if you see yellow-brown tar-tar, your pet has tooth decay. If the tooth decay becomes very severe, yourpet will paw its mouth, refuse to chew foodand dribble saliva. If you suspect that yourpet has tooth decay, bring your pet in for adental check up.Free dental check up.During the month of August, you can getyour pets teeth checked free of charge by aveterinarian at the Roxby Downs VeterinaryClinic.Bookings are essential - phone 8671 0730.More information:See our web site at http://www.whyallavet.com.au/roxby1/

Where Do Your Rates Go?

RATES...Ever thought about where your ‘Municipal Rates’ go? Pictured is an approximate breakdownfor every $100 spent of rate revenue.Figures are approximate and intended as aguide to illustrate the areas of ‘nett’ Munici-pal expenditure to which rates are applied.Operations for Roxby Power and Roxby Wa-ter are excluded.Council’s Municipal rate revenue of$1,283,800 is a combination of a fixed chargeand differential rating for all rateable prop-erties, plus a fixed service rate for the collec-tion, treatment and disposal of refuse col-lected from residential properties. For every $100 of rate revenue, WMC andthe State Government combine to provide asimilar contribution through Municipal defi-cit support. The above costs compare very favourablywith a number of other Municipalities.Roxby Downs has the highest taxable incomein the state but one of the lowest averagerates.

The Roxby Community is in the process of consolidating a unique future for all residents as it continues to expand the range of community economic development programs.Bill Boehm Council Administrator said today, “already The Monitor - Your Community Newspaper is on the streets”.“Youth, Tourism and Business Development initiatives are wellunderway as is the benefit of a full year’s operation of the Cultural Precinct which has successfully delivered an expanded array of leisure and cultural services. This year we are usingthis as a launching pad to continue to build the capacity of the community through the 2003/04 Council Budget - Creating our Future Mark 2.”

In addressing the levelsof rating, Council tookinto consideration‘interalia’ the strategic de-velopment of the town aswell as the impact of rateson businesses in theCouncil area. Council, inconjunction with theState Government andWMC Resources has rec-ognised the need to en-sure that local residentsmake a contribution that, over time, reduces theMunicipal deficit and isconsistent with residentincomes.Critically, Council hasbeen requested to provide

ball stadium.To address a number ofanomalies that con-strain Council’s opera-tion, various aspects ofthe Roxby Downs (In-denture Ratification)Act 1982 will be re-viewed and anychanges incorporatedinto a long-term finan-cial strategy.

a “strong rating effort.”As a result, Council hasdecided to increase theoverall rate revenue by9.8 per cent, which ismoderately higher thanthe Adelaide March Quar-ter CPI of 5.5 per cent.Given the extent of oursubsidy and the fact thatRoxby Downs has thehighest taxable income inthe state but one of thelowest average rates, thisincrease is consideredreasonable. In addition, Council faceshigher than normal oper-ating costs due to our re-mote location and need to

maintain regional stand-ard facilities on a small ratebase. A domestic rubbishcollection will continue tobe provided to residentialproperties at a cost of$110 per annum.“Residents should notethat during the year prop-erty valuations have in-creased on average be-tween 10 and 16 per cent,”Bill Boehm Council Ad-ministrator said. “How-ever, changes to actual in-dividual property rateswill depend on individualproperty valuations andthe differential ratesadopted.”

In preparation of the 2003/2004 Budget, various keyfactors were addressed. These included:" Completion of various one off projects identi-

fied in 2003/2004 but as yet not completed." Increased operating costs due to inflation,

(March Qtr CPI of 5.5 per cent in Adelaide)," Increased maintenance areas" High costs due to our remote location and high

“regional” standard of our facilities." Internal Loan servicing costs of $200k associ-

ated with 2001/02 construction of a second bas-ketball stadium.

" State Government financial constraints." Decline in Roxby Water’s income from water

sales." Impact of increased water and electricity costs

on consumers" Reducing our reliance on the State Government

and WMC Resources." Meeting State Government requirements for a

“strong rating effort.”" Review of Council’s Asset Maintenance Reserve.

Key Budget FactorsUnlike most Local Government Authoritiesin South Australia, Council operates the utili-ties ROXBY POWER (Electricity) andROXBY WATER (Water and Sewerage), aswell as the normal Municipal Council func-tions.Budget should therefore be viewed as threeseparate entities with both utilities operat-ing on a commercial basis.Under the Roxby Downs (Indenture Ratifi-cation) Act 1982, ROXBY POWER is not per-mitted to make a profit, but can direct anyexcess income into its asset replacementfund.Profits from ROXBY WATER however, dosupport the Municipality. The State Government and WMC equally

meet the deficit on Municipal Operations.Over the last 12 months Council has beennegotiating with the State Government andWMC to provide some certainty into its‘Municipal deficit support’.As a result, Council has been able to obtaina commitment to deficit support of $1050kper annum over three years, subject to a re-

view of its rating efforts. To minimise financial impact on the com-munity this constraint is being managedby carrying forward the overall financialresult at the end of the year by way of arolling program. In this way projects that are required nowcan effectively be funded over time.

Capital WorksCouncil’s capital works program is funded with sub-stantial grant funding ($264k); with significant con-tribution for asset maintenance works from Coun-cil’s financial reserves.$300,000 Township Street Reseal Program$110,000 Construction of new skateboard track$130,000 Construction of new Youth Centre.$25,000 Netball Courts resurfacing & marking$100,000 Replace Auditorium floor$80,000 Recreation Centre air conditioning$3,700 Stadium 1 safety nets$8,000 Netball courts landscaping$10,000 Beach volleyball court$15,000 Auditorium curtains$8,000 Film preparation equipment$20,000 Auditorium tables & chairs$110,000 Southern Subdivision footpath & land-

ROXBY WATER...Three years ago Council undertook an ex-tensive policy review of the methods for pricing for water andsewerage services. As a result a user-pays approach has been adopted. -WATER PRICES...Under the Indenture Act WMC is requiredto provide potable water to Council at a set cost.Over the past three years the cost of water purchases has in-creased to around $1.12 per kilolitre. Council then chlorinates, distributes and retails to township consumers. With the advent of higher prices and a user pays approach, theamount of revenue derived from water sales has fallen.Mindful of the impact on the community, Council is in the proc-ess of reviewing current charges to ensure that as a commercialbusiness there are adequate returns on investment to ‘munici-pal shareholders’.

It is expected that this will be completed during 2003 and anychanges commence in 2004.As a result there is no immediate change to current watercharges which apply to all properties in the Roxby DownsTownship. Current prices are set per access unit per quarter.Minimum $42.50First 34 kl $1.25 per kl34 - 150 kl $1.60 per klOver 150 kl (residential) $2.30 per klOver 150 kl (industrial & commercial) $1.76 per klSEWERAGE PRICES...Sewerage charges from 1 July 2003increased by 6.9 per cent to $77 per property unit per quarter. For residential premises, this is currently less than chargesthat are applied by SA Water in Country South Australia.

ROXBY POWER...Council’s power requirements are obtained off the Na-tional Electricity Grid from WMC Resources.Council is licensed under the Electricity Act as a Retail and DistributionAuthority. Under the Indenture Act, Council is exempt from the NationalElectricity Market.Prices have remained at current levels that were set largely in line withthose AGL tariffs that applied in Adelaide in 2002.However, while these are now approximately 25 per cent below currentAdelaide prices this situation cannot be guaranteed to remain.Electricity Tariffs (including GST) to continue as follows:

Desert Dirt Kart’s second August race meeting for2003 turned out to be a top day with a goodattendence of drivers and supporters. The meeting was sponsored by Little Rascals ChildCare Centre.First up the Juniors, who are all now off their P-platesand in the draw for pole position in every race.Duncan Atkins was off pole, but the two strokes madeit clear he wasn’t to be there long.In the Juniors, Jonty Dear was knocked off on thefirst corner, with Antonio Olivastri following in thesame a bit later in the race. Ben Roulstone shot aheadof Daniel Olivastri, and went on to finish with a firstplace with Daniel second and Duncan third.Race 2 put Antonio off pole, and as always the 2strokes sorted out their positions very quickly, withBen first, Daniel second and Jonty third.Race 3 saw Daniel off pole, the race started well, butlost a few drivers by the end. With Daniel first place, Jonty second and DuncanthirdRace 4 had Jonty off pole, but during the race, histhrottle cable broke, due to a slight airborne incidentat the start of the race, and he did not finish.Ben went on to win the race, with Daniel second andDuncan third.

In the final race for the Juniors Daniel took pole, as hehad accumulated the most points for the day. A bit ofjostling at the start and it was on. Antonio misjudgedthe speed into a corner and off the track he went. Therace went on with Daniel and Ben fighting it out forfirst position, eventually with Ben winning the raceDaniel second and Jonty third.Overall positions for the day: Daniel Olivastri first,

Ben Roulstone second, Duncan Atkins third, JontyDear fourth and Antonio Olivastri fifth.

The KT100 Mediums had Helen Smith off pole forthe first race but coming into the second corner, BrianAlgie took a high speed risk, cutting on the inside offBrett Atkins. And yes, you guessed it, the risk wasdisastrous. Brett got going again (amazingly) andHelen somehow got caught up in it all and stopped.Brian was left there wondering why didn’t it comeoff?Kim Rodda went on to win first place with Brett sec-ond and newcomer Ron Degioia third.Race 2 had Brett off pole with not much changingthroughout the race.Brett won first, Brian second and Kim third.

Race 3 saw Kim off pole, with Brett passing Brian, then Kim with not much changing. Brett first, Kim

second and Brian third.

Race 4 Brian off pole, with Kim taking Brian on theinside, due to a misjudged corner, and going out wide.Brett was hot on the tail but in the end Kim won therace with Brian second and Brett third and Ron pip-ping out Helen for fourth place. In the final, Brett was off pole position, he led therace until the last lap when silence reigned, and hismotor stopped (seized). Kim managed to hook up onthe rear of Brian’s kart, and had a free ride for a quar-ter of a lap. When Brian finally shook him off bytrying to head him for the tyre wall, he was off therace line for the big corner. And somehow Kim wasthere to take him on the inside and win the race. WithBrian second , Helen third and Ron fourth.Overall positions for the day - Kim Rodda first, BrettAtkins third, Brian Algie third with Helen Smith andRon Degioia equal fourth.

The KT100 Heavies - a great turn out here and withsome of the best closest racing all day, along withsome biffing and bashing.Race 1 had Jeff Redjepi on pole, with Chris (big fella)Horewood overtaking in the third lap and finishingfirst, Martin Budz and John Jagodnik (hard to say)had problems with their Karts and did not finish atall.Jeff came in second and Gavin Maxwell third.

Race 2 had Gavin off pole with Chris and Jeff fight-ing it out to pass him. They did pass him and raced closely till the end, withJeff coming first, Chris second and Gavin third.

Race 3 had Chris off pole and that’s how it finished,Chris first, Jeff second, Gavin third.Race 4 saw Gavin off pole, (good draw that, Gavin)with 4 karts going into the first corner side by side. Itwas all on for 5 laps of the race, settling out withChris first, Jeff second, Gavin third. This was a reallyexciting race, and probably the best they have pro-duced yet.The final had Chris on pole position. He led all theway without competition, as Gavin And Jeff gotcaught up in a corner and DNF. Martyn did not startas he had blown his motor in the previous race (adefinite candidate for the mean lean blown machinetrophy). So the end result was Chris first with Johnsecond.

Overall positions for the day: Chris Horewood first,

Jeff Redjepi second, Gavin Maxwell third, JohnJagodnik fourth and Martyn Budz fifth.

Many thanks to the ambulance for turning up everyrace meet, and Jackie and Tracy in the canteen.

Woomera and Districts Football League

Roxby Under 13s and Under 16s travelled toWoomera to play Round 11 under lights.Tom Blackie and his dedicated helpers, all ofWoomera knew it was going to be a chilly night andhad the fire buckets ablaze and barbecue at the readyfor an entertaining night of football. The under 13s kicked off the night with a good evencontest.Although scores were not submitted the results wasone that could have gone either way.In such an evenly matched game it would be no sur-prise to see either team claiming victory or maybe afitting result would be a draw. Some of the better players on the night were C.Burran, J. Hombsch, D. Vanzatti and the Skinnerbrothers. No player was disgraced with everyone contribut-ing to an excellent game appreciated by all support-ers.As the night grew colder the Under 16s took to thefield but it wasn’t long and the players forgot aboutthe weather. The first quarter saw a good paced and evenly con-tested game with Razorbacks leading at the first breakby 9 points. The second and third terms saw the Dragons chas-ing Jumpers with some undisciplined acts by bothsides creeping into the game. Several players werespoken to by the umpires and told to control theiroverzealous egos and do what they are meant to do,that is play football. Three quarter time saw a com-manding lead to the Razorback’s by 10 goals. To the Dragons’ credit they tried to make a game outof it in the final quarter but finished 13 goals behind. For the Razorback’s side Cody Kenny and RickyKeller seemed to have the ball on a magnet, kickingsix goals each. The midfield players in Brett Chesson and MarkFreeth providing their forwards with good skills madeit so much easier.Steven Kaminski’s marking and goal kicking im-proved with each game.Boro Nedelkovic toiled hard against the more experi-enced Dragons ruckmen Cody Gaitor and AaronWatkins are also worthy of a mention. Not to be outdone was Luke Button of the Dragonswho displayed an excellent exhibition of overhead

marking and goal kicking.Finishing with three for the game Stuart Ferenci,Tyson Norton and Nigel Burton were amongst theDragons’ better players. With only tow games left to play before the grandfinal it is a timely reminder for the players and coachesto keep the on field emotions in check. No one wantsto see a player miss out on final glory due to a stupidindiscretion. To the coaches/team managers please fill in the scoresheets that have been provided to you so the re-sults of your matches can be printed by the press.

Students from throughout the region served up aheap of fun during Tennis SA’s annual ‘tennis inschools’ program.Regional Development Coach Andrew Thomson, provided intensive skills clinics to students from thefour local primary schools this month.Students were provided with racquets, balls and les-sons ranging from basic handling of a racquet togame tactices. These clinics have led to as many as 50 local chil-dren taking on after-school lessons - prompting newinterest in revitalising the Roxby Downs junior ten-nis scene.

“We’re looking to form some kind of committee to ad-minister local tennis, particularly junior tennis,”Thomson said.“The ‘tennis in schools’ programs allows us to givestudents a taste of tennis - keeping the clinics afford-able and accessible.“But now we’ve caught their interest and started themdown the road, we need to make sure there’s some-where for them to go locally.”Thomson will host a series of tennis clinics in the firstweek of September school holidays.Bookings can be made through the Roxby Downs Lei-sure Centre - ph 8671 0500.
