From the Presidents…

Dear Shelters Family,

The more things stay the same, the more they change. The same is that we have our annual luncheon before the high holidays, but this time we will have it at a new place. The food is always good, the entertainment will be from Israel and the Klezmer band is a part of the wonderful work of Sulamot, one of our targeted projects for the new year.

Things that have changed is that this year we have had so many more wonderful people step forward and volunteer to help us make this a special occasion. It reminds me of the past when my mom was so heavily involved in this event and all the people would gather at different houses every month to plan the luncheon. We are still an all volunteer group with no paid employees. Thanks to everyone who continue to work so hard for the volunteer status which means “no pay”.

The entertainment this year will be a group of young people from Israel playing music, this is one of our targeted fundraising projects--instruments for Israeli children. We will also have different Shelter members report on their visits to our projects in Israel and some great pictures and videos.

We have Reina and Rob Markley’s son Ben leaving for a prestigious college program in Computer Science and Myra and Alain Gabbay’s daughter Cece will begin teaching at Beverly Hills High School. These are two wonderful changes for our Shelter’s family. I am also saddened by the people I grew up with leaving this earth this past year but I know they will be met by other Shelters members at the “Pearly Gates”. I see my Dad and so many other people watching the Dodgers game, playing cards, laughing and living life to it fullest. They felt they survived the Holocaust, so this life behind the Pearly Gates is not so bad.

Thank you again for all your support to Shelters For Israel and your generous donations to make these projects become a reality for the young people of Israel.

Dr. Jonas Salk and Shelters for IsraelThe actual date that Shelters for Israel was founded is not certain; it was probably either 1946 or 1947. Later on, the date was changed to 1948 to parallel the founding of the State of Israel.

What is certain is that we were started by some very extraordinary Hungarian immigrants who had become successful in Los Angeles, having been here at that point for decades for the most part, and who had certainly lost family in the Shoah.

Their early achievements are remarkable and this article kicks off a series of reprints of photos and articles going back to the earlier days of ‘Shelters.’

As you can see from what was probably written in 1959 or 1960, Dr. Jonas Salk, on his first and only trip to Israel in 1959, went to Holon to dedicate the 74 units built by ‘Shelters.’ A street was named after him, and below you will find a link to a short, soundless video of that dedication. It is included in the Spielberg Archives and is very interesting.

It was very moving to see the sign in Hebrew saying “Shelters for Israel.” Those 74 units housed Hungarian survivors and their young children, whom you see in the video. Dr. Salk appears about a minute or so into the video. What an incredible role ‘Shelters’ played in those early years of Israel!

Daisy Miller was born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia in 1938, to parents who had already fled Austria. She survived the war in hiding in various settings, ultimately in a small room in a primitive farm house in the Tuscan

Hills in Italy. She was saved by courageous farm families that risked their own families’ life in order to help save Daisy and her family.

Daisy immigrated to the U.S. in 1951 with her mother soon after the death of her father who battled TB for 3 years after the war. She first lived in New York and moved to California that same year.

Daisy is the co-founder and past president of the Child Survivor group in Los Angeles, California, established in 1982, and is co-founder and Vice President of the World Federation of Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust and Descendants. She helped found these organizations to provide a safe and nurturing environment for those, who like herself, were young children during the Holocaust, who after the war were not recognized as Holocaust Survivors, and whose own memories and suffering were ignored and largely unsupported.

She was trained in Retirement Planning at the University of Southern California - headed her own consulting company, that provided workshops and seminars on Retirement, and worked in the field of Aging for over 20 years.

In 1994 Daisy became a member of the staff of the Shoah Foundation, now the USC Shoah Foundation, where she held a number of key positions until her retirement as of the beginning of 2014.

Daisy continues to actively work in the planning of the annual World Federation Child Survivors and Descendants conferences held in various host cities around the world. She is currently involved in the planning for the 2017 Conference in Jerusalem, as well as the next conference tentatively planned for Florida in 2018.

She is now focusing on next generations of descendants of survivors of the Holocaust, and aims to inspire them to carry on the legacy to educate and to remember our history.

Dear Shelters for Israel members, not so long ago, we started a project distributing certificates of appreciation to the first generation-Holocaust survivors, living in Israel. In light of excitement, joy and pride while receiving the certificates, we wish to expand the number of recipients of certificates abroad. The Jews of Zakarpatya organization living in Israel, turn to the second and third generations who live abroad to award certificates of appreciation to your families. In the annual memorial ceremonies, for the first time this year the memorials were held in the communities of Miami, Budapest and Uzhgorod. The organizers of the ceremonies gave the Holocaust survivors certificates of appreciation - to those who were present.

We will send you the text of the certificate, translated into English, so you can print it, put a frame-grant it, and photograph them, together with family members .You are kindly asked to forward the photos to the e-mail of Gita Berkovich. We will share the photos on the Facebook: A Yid from Zakarpatie and on our website :www.carpati.org.il Her E- mail is: [email protected]

In your application write down: The name of the survivor,His address,The name of the contact [Son, daughter, bride, bridegroom, others],The address of the contact.
