In the News Spirit Award to Staff for Exceptional Care A couple from LaPorte County, Indiana, nominated all staff at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for a Spirit Award that was sent along to President Rick Floyd. The couple wrote, “…through our lifetime, we have had contact with our local hospitals on several occasions. But we have never experienced a better environment that we have at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. All the staff, from physicians to volunteer workers exhibit excellent personalities and compassion for their patients. Whatever you are doing, keep it up.” TrialNet Center

The University of Chicago Medicine and Advocate Children’s Hospital have received a five-year, $1.8-million grant from the National Institutes of Health to find new ways to delay and prevent type 1 diabetes. The grant will establish the first type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Clinical Center in Chicago.

TrialNet, a long-term, international collaboration, works to identify people at risk or in the early stages of type 1 diabetes – primarily by enrolling family members of individuals who already have diabetes. Once identified, researchers offer individuals the chance to participate in studies that introduce prevention or treatment tactics that experts believe may have an impact on the progression of the disease.

10 Tower Staff Takes the Ice Bucket Challenge

The ALGH 10 tower staff performed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge last week to raise awareness for ALS and in memory of a nurse, Susie Peyrot, who succumbed to ALS several years ago.

“Susie worked at ALGH for many years, most recently in the nursing office,” says Barbara Pool, Clinical Manager, Neurology and Stroke Care Unit. “Many of the nurses at ALGH - surgical services, ICU, Nursing office and other areas - participated in a walk for ALS years ago while Susie was still with us. She is missed,” added Barb.

As you can hear in the video, they called out the nurse staffing office, MICU and the AMG neurologists to participate in the challenge. The nurse staffing office completed their challenge within 24 hours and challenged a few additional departments, while AMG Neurologists opted to make generous donations. MICU is taking on the challenge, but they are putting a new spin on it – stay tuned to see came up with.

Heart Walk Advocate Lutheran General Hospital already has 18 teams for this year’s American Heart Association’s 2014 Heart Walk, but it would be great to have more! Remember that each registered walker who raises $50.00 will get an Advocate hoodie sweatshirt. You can participate in three ways. 1) start your own LGH team, 2) join an existing team or 3) donate money to an existing team. It can all be done at www.advocateheartwalk.com. Family Day in Bourbonnais Family Day at Chicago Bears Training Camp, Bourbonnais ACH was invited to bring the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile and our jump rope activity to promote fitness and exercise -- Get Your Heart Pumping With Jumping -- where children jump rope until they need to stop while we count the number of jumps then write their name and # of jumps on a heart that we proudly hang on the Chicago Bear head. All participants are then given a free jump rope to keep up the activity at home.

Annual School Supply Drive

During the month of August, you can help some of our service area’s neediest children by donating school supplies. Your contribution of new or usable school supplies will benefit local students who don’t know the luxury and excitement of back-to-school shopping.
