July - August Flying – 2015

The July meeting was held at one of our favorite places; Carthage’s Pik N Pig restaurant on Gilliam McConnell field. Of course the food is fantastic and with outdoor seating we get “dinner and a show”. Our numbers were small but lively and it is always fun to get together and talk airplanes. Conversations centered on the hot topics of 3rd Class Medicals versus drivers license, the expense of ADS-B for our planes and where were going to meet next month. We didn’t have all the answers to the first two topics but we did decide to come back to the “Pig” for our August meeting. Thanks to Rich and Charlotte Netherby for coming over from Wake Forest, Marshall Teaff and Steve Yancey for flying in from Huntersville, Jim Link driving from Knightdale and

Scott Seekins flying as my copilot for making it a great day. The weather cooperated and those pesky thunderstorms stayed away, although we did make a small detour to avoid a little rain on our return flight to INT.

Back again by popular demand to the “Pig” for our August meeting, and popular is the keyword. We had the largest number of members and guests in attendance that I can remember in years. I am sure that the nice VFR day with a light wind from the NW help get planes out of the hangar and into the air. My flight was silk smooth above 3000 ft MSL but there was just enough wind to keep me alert as I let down for the approach 5NC3. Thanks to the following for making this a Saturday that we will remember for a long while. Jim Hicks (Cary) Reggie Ballard (New London VA) Jim Link and Greg Hopkins (Knightdale) Marshall & Lenora Teaff (Huntersville) Roger Montambo (Charlotte) Bill Houston (Asheboro) Al Burk & Brian Boehlecke (Chapel Hill), Ryan, Brandy, Kira and Andrew Montambo (Huntersville) Craig Huneycutt and daughter Samantha (Huntersville), Dave Talton (Knightdale), Julian Johnson (Raeford), Grover & Lili Ellis (Sanford). We had so many people eating it required four tables and I am not sure that some didn’t eat standing up. Now earlier I said “dinner and a show” well there were certainly lots of airplanes to watch and in one case a spam can came in a little too hot and locked the main wheels until we heard that “pop” and smelled more than hickory smoked barbeque. No damage except to the tire and the pilot’s pride (and wallet) and fortunately the local shop had a tube and tire. A good lesson to all of us is practice those short field approaches, watch the winds and go around if the approach is not as planned.

One of our long time members, Reggie Ballard, not only went to Sentimental Journey in Loch Haven PA this past June but was the Master of Ceremony. Be sure to read his article in this issue of the CSWPC News.

As we were saying our goodbyes I had the opportunity to speak with Kelly Beasley a recent transplant to NC from Mississippi and owner of a Cessna 150 with a tailwheel. Kelly has not moved his plane to NC yet but expects to make the move soon and plans to join us on a regular basis.

Again I would like to thank our members and especially our guests (and now new members) for turning out and supporting our Chapter. I hope to see all of you again soon and remember to fly safe.

Our September 5th meeting is at the Rowan County EAA chapter hangar for their $5 lunch. So hope to see you there. Fly safe! Steve

Note: Siler City (KSCR) will be closing 8/31/15 for paving – expect 50 days before reopening. Check the NOTAMS.

Sentimental Journey went pretty good except it rained 3 out of 5 days. There were more airplanes there than I expected to show up, probably about 125 or 150. Someone fed the crowd every evening at a different place or airport. I forget what day it was but ALL were invited to fly into or drive into Logue field which is about 20 to 25 statute miles west of Williamsport Pa. What a beautiful airport right on top of a mountain. The pulled pork was great as was the fellowship. Any kind of drink you wanted and more dessert than Wal-Mart’s bakery! This guy had a hanger so big it would make us all jealous ! I was asked to be the Master of Ceremonies for the SJ Banquet two weeks prior to the fly-in. While I was honored to be asked, the banquet did get off to a rough start. The color guard was 30 minutes late showing up and a 75 yr. old PFC IN the color guard did not know his left from his right. The secretary told me to introduce the Head Table at the wrong time and you get the message? I had never met anyone in the Piper family but Mrs. William T. Piper, Jr. sat at the Head Table with speaker Ben Coleman, his wife and me. Ben Coleman is a former FAA man who has a resume that won’t quit. In all honesty he should be called “Dr. Ben Coleman”. He is not cocky, arrogant, self centered or unapproachable but just has good old boy common sense. If you ask him a question you get a straight answer not the typical government runaround! I sat down on my bed the night before the banquet to memorize his accomplishments and found out real quick that I could not do so. I asked him when the ceremonies were over if he thought the waiver for the Third Class medical would ever happen and he said “yes it will”. He is a class guy with emphasis on aviation safety. Over all we had a good week and look forward to going back nest year. Later,
