Welcome to Fukuoka - Get orientated!

Trains ¬ 철도

There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Sub-

way”, and “JR”. The subway links the two

city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Air-

port. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as

Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel out-

side Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new

Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima.

후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테쓰 전철’ ‘지하철’

‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타,

덴진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘

니시테쓰 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸,

가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나

신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.

Buses ¬ 버스

Go almost anywhere aboard Nishitetsu Bus

in Fukuoka City! Rates vary by distance, but

are just ¥100 within the ¥100 Bus area (see p.

5 ~ 6 yellow area) including Hakata Sta., Su-

miyoshi, Yakuineki-mae, Tenjin and Gofuku-

machi. Combined with Showa Bus, you can go

as far as Itoshima from Hakata Station.

후쿠오카 시내를 편리하게 돌아볼 수 있는 니시테쓰

버스. 요금은 승차거리에 따라 상이. 후쿠오카 도심부에

한해서 100엔 버스를 운행 중. 운행 지역은 하카타역,

스미요시, 야쿠인 에키마에, 덴진, 고후쿠마치가 포함

된다 (5~6쪽 지도의 노란색으로 표시된 지역에 한함).

니시테쓰 버스 외에 쇼와버스가 ‘하카타역~이토시마

방면’ 노선을 운행 중.

How to ride 버스 타는 방법

●  Check the destination on the front and

side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via

the center doors.

●  If paying cash, take a ticket as you board.

If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the

sensor, ticket not required.

●  Bus stops and fees are displayed on the

monitor next to a driver. The fee appears un-

der the ticket number.

●  Fees are displayed on the monitor above

the driver. Match your ticket number to get

your fee.

● Push the stop button to alert the driver that

you want to get off at the next stop.

●  Drop the fee and your ticket into the box

next to the driver and get off from the front

door. If you need change, drop cash into the

box next to the driver. When you are using ni-

moca, wave your card above the sensor.

●  버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠

있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가

오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다

●  현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에

정리권을 뽑는다. IC카드 [nimoca]를 갖고 있을

때에는 승차구의 단말기에 카드를 터치한다 (이

경우에는 정리권이 필요 없음).

●  정차하는 버스 정거장 이름과 운임은, 수시로

운전사 옆의 모니터에 표시된다. 갖고 있는 정리권

번호 아래에 표시 되어 있는 것이 운임이다.

●  목적지 버스 정거장 이름이 모니터에 표시 되고

안내방송이 흐르면 하차 버튼을 누른다.

●  운전사 옆의 박스에 정리권과 정확한 금액의

운임을 넣고, 앞 쪽의 출구로 하차한다. 돈을 바꿔야 할

때에는 동전교환기를 이용하자. (거스름돈이 지급되지

않으므로 미리 동전을 교환해야 한다). nimoca를

갖고 있을 경우에는 내리는 문의 nimoca 단말기에

카드를 터치한다.

Public phones are becoming scarce. They ac-

cept ¥10 and ¥100 coins and prepaid cards.

bile phones are available at the Airport.

공중전화의 수가 많이 줄어들었으나 10엔, 100엔

동전과 선불 카드로 사용할 수 있다. 휴대폰 로밍

서비스는 Docomo, SoftBank and AU를 통해

(780엔). 김이 뿌려진 밥 위에 다시마를 만 특제

멘타이코를 하나 얹어 간장 베이스의 타레(소스)를

더했다. 멘타이코의 타레는 굴과 가리비의 엑기스를

사용한다. 때문에 매콤하기만 한 것이 아니라 깊이

있는 맛이 입 안 전체에 퍼지고, 깨와 차조기 잎의

takes its name. It consists of a box of rice

topped with a layer of seaweed, on which lies

spiced and salted cod roe wrapped in kelp. The

cod roe are soaked in a sauce made from oys-

ter and scallop extracts, giving them a deep

umami taste, with just a hint of sesame and

Ganso Hakata Mentaijuthe accompanying soy sauce contains a dash

of cod roe, which is great for those who like

a touch of extra spiciness. Of course, there’s

much more on the menu than just cod roe,

such as the hakata zoni soup (¥680), normally

only eaten at New Year, or the nukamisodaki

(fish cooked in fermented rice bran, ¥980),

which is a specialty of nearby Kitakyushu.

As the perfect accompaniment to all this lo-

cal food, there are also several varieties of

locally-produced shochu. This is a great place

if you want to go beyond the usual sushi, tem-

pura and ramen, and try Japanese food with

more local flavor.

Located one block over from Keyaki-

dori, the exterior of this café and

bakery resembles that of a tradi-

tional Japanese house. The inte-

rior has been beautifully renovated with airy

high ceilings, concrete walls and floors that

contrast marvelously with wooden beams,

pillars and handmade wooden furniture.

Large windows looking out onto the beauti-

ful garden are also a nice touch. In August,

they are only open in the evenings, serving a

set meal of hors d'oeuvres, soup, bread, main

course, dessert and drink (¥3,500, reserva-

they also have a popular lunch menu, which

includes homemade bread and lots of fresh

복층 구조를 이루고 있다. 벽이나 마루는 콘크리트. 이

Momochi

If you’ve ever read an article about Fu-

kuoka in a guidebook or magazine, you

will be familiar with Fukuoka Tower, the

Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk Hotel and the

Yahoo! Dome. But have you ever actually been

up in that neck of the woods?

The area in question, Momochi, has a short

history. It was built in 1990 on reclaimed land

originally used for the site of the 1989 Asia-

Pacific Expo. In addition to the three landmarks

mentioned above, it boasts many modern tall

office buildings and high class apartment build-

ings, creating a futuristic landscape.

For great sightseeing spots, look no further

than Yahoo! Dome and Fukuoka Tower. Yahoo!

Dome is famous as the home of Fukuoka’s pro-

baseball team, the Softbank Hawks, and is

also the site of numerous events throughout

the year. Baseball fans can take a behind-the-

scenes look at the stadium on one of the reg-

ularly-run tours. Fukuoka Tower, at 234m, is

the highest seaside tower in Japan. The view-

ing room, 123m above ground level, provides

후쿠오카 타워, 힐튼후쿠오카 시호크, 그리고

어디에선가(관광가이드북? 잡지? 포스트카드?)본

적이 없는 사람이 적지 않을까? 후쿠오카를 대표하는

이 랜드마크들이 있는 곳이 모모치 지역이다.

도시로서의 역사는 아직 짧다. 원래는 1989년에

개최된 ‘아시아 태평양 박람회’에 맞춰 조성한 매립지로

설비가 완료된 것이 1990년대. 따라서 앞서 말한 3곳의

건물 이외에도 현대적인 고층빌딩과 고급맨션이 들어서

있고, 미래적인 풍경을 구성하고 있다.

후쿠오카타워는 높이 234m를 자랑하는 일본에서

가장 높은 해변타워이다. 123m의 높이에 위치하는 5

층 전망대에서는 하카타만을 한 눈에 볼 수있다. Now

Map을 지참하면 일반어른 800엔의 전망요금을 20%

할인한 640엔으로 이익.

지역의 북쪽에는 인공 해변이 뻗어 있다. 여름에는

해수욕장으로써 많은 시민으로 붐비고, 비치 발리볼을

마리존에서는 하카타만을 사이에 두고 북쪽에

위치한 리조트 지역 우미노나카미치까지 직행하는

고속선이 출항하고 있다. 소요시간은 20분이므로

모모치해변에서 즐긴 후에 우미노나카미치 수족관에서

돌고래 쇼를 보는 것도 가능하다.

후쿠오카에서도 가장 현대적인 상가와 리조트가

공존하는 모모치 지역은 저녁 노을과 야경 등 아름다운

경치를 만날 수 있다. 하루에 걸쳐서도 즐거움이 끊이지

않는 매력이 넘치는 지역이다.

Long-term residents of Fukuoka will no doubt recall the magnitude

6 earthquake that hit the city in 2005. Natural disasters can strike

at any time, so it is important to always be prepared. Momochi is

home to the Fukuoka Disaster Prevention Center, a facility where you can

experience simulated disasters to learn what to do in such a situation. The

earthquake simulator can produce tremors from magnitude 1 to magnitude

7, while the typhoon simulator can create winds up to 30m/s. The facility

also houses a real fire-fighting helicopter and a model recreation of the

눈이 부신 날렵한 S라인과 상냥한 말씨로 사람들을

사로잡는 ‘헤이와'. 에티오피아에서 학교를 졸업한 후

셰프가 된 그녀는 후쿠오카에서 에스닉 레스토랑을

열기 위해 2008년에 처음으로 일본을 찾았다. 일본으로

오는데에 불안이 없었다면 거짓말이겠지만 '일단 오면

어떻게든 된다니까요!'라며 웃어보였다.

에티오피아에 있었을 때는 친구를 만나기 위해

카페에 가서 라떼를 마시며 여유로운 한때를 보내는

것이 그녀만의 프라이빗 타임이었다는 헤이와. 스위츠,

푸드도 다양하며 쇼핑도 할 수 있는 엘르 카페를 보고

처음엔 놀란듯 했지만 '새로운데요!'라며 여러 상품

중에서 좀처럼 보기 드문 수입 식자재를 골라 들고서는

Hiwot Haileselassie Weldegebreal hails

from Ethiopia. She worked as a chef until she

came to Japan in 2008 to attend the opening

of an Ethiopian restaurant in Fukuoka. It was

her first experience of living in Japan and,

although initially nervous, she was positive

enough to tough it out. "It’ll work out!" she

told herself - and, sure enough, it did!

At home in Ethiopia, Hiwot enjoys visiting

cafés to meet friends or to just relax over a

cup of latte in her spare time. “It’s a more

modern style of socialising,” she explains.

She was pleased to visit ELLE CAFÉ, with its

wide range of quality items for sale, including

imported cooking ingredients.

We recommended Japanese sweets to Hi-

wot who is more accustomed to the strong,

spicy flavors of Ethiopian food. The five bean

parfait consists of maccha ice cream topped

with five different kinds of bean, which are

first stewed with quality white coarse sugar

for ten hours. She was pleasantly surprised

to find that the sugar had soaked through the

beans and later asked a member of the café

staff how they made the dessert.

Although not working as a chef at the mo-

ment, Hiwot continues to cook Ethiopian food

for her friends and at small events. She wants

to continue cooking and making people happy

with her dishes.

adventures of a little goat who

is still going after 24 years. Spec-

tators line both banks of the Kan-

mon Strait to watch 13,000 fire-

works, the explosions from which

are also beautifully reflected in

the waters below. Roads will be

congested, so we recommend us-

護国神社みたままつりGokoku Shrine MitamaFestivalGokoku Shrine

A festival of light with six thou-

sand lanterns illuminating the

shrine grounds. The light from

the lanterns is a symbolic way

of giving thanks to one’s ances-

tors and mourning for those who

have died in war. A spiritual event

encouraging consideration of the

importance of peace.

야마구치현 시모노세키에서 공동

개최되는 이 대회에는 모지측 70만명,

명의 사람들이 모인다. 양쪽 연안에서

쏘아 올리는 약 13000발의 불꽃이

관문해협의 수면을 물들이는 모습은

과연 장관이다. 당일에는 큰 혼잡이

show 12 well-known films from South Korea

Heat wave precautions◊ Heat exhaustion can be life-threatening. Take

these precautions to protect your health this

summer. 1. Avoid heat. Take hats or parasols

with you when going outdoors, and use the

curtains, fans, or air conditioners when in-

doors. 2. Take plenty of fluids. Drink small

amounts of water even if your throat is not

dry. Take extra salt if you perspire heavily.

3. Dress wisely. Wear clothing that absorbs

perspiration and dries quickly. 4. Don’t over-

exert yourself. Skipping meals or insufficient

sleep can cause heat exhaustion. Maintain

proper lifestyle habits. 5. Be considerate of

other group members when engaging in group

activities. Shorten the time of the activity or

Garden will be open every Saturday night in

August from 18:00 ~21:00, with final admis-

sion at 20:30 This is the perfect opportunity

to see the living environment and behavior

of animals at night, as well as night-blooming

flowers. During the month, a free bus will run

from the Sakurazaka Station on the munici-

pal subway’s Nanakuma Line to the site’s en-

trance. Visitors who use the bus will receive

a 20% discount on admission. The Fukuoka

Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden opened

in 1953. The surrounding area is being devel-

oped in stages, with completion targeted for

Classical gas ◊ at ACros fukuokaThe Fukuoka Symphony Hall in the ACROS Fu-

kuoka facility is a state of the art concert hall

for classical music. Fukuoka City co-sponsors

some of the concerts with ACROS Fukuoka

to provide local residents an opportunity to

enjoy musical culture. The fifth Afternoon

Concert will be held on Thursday, August 18

at 2:00 p.m. All tickets are for general admis-

sion and cost 3,000 yen (Students: 1,500 yen,

Parent & Child: 4,000 yen. All seats are re-

served). The 26th Lunchtime Concert will be

presented at noon on Tuesday, September 13.

There is no reserved seating and all tickets are

the price of a good lunch: 1,000 yen.

fukuoka Tower ◊ for half price!The Fukuoka Tower, a well-loved symbol of

Fukuoka City, is the highest seaside tower

in Japan at 234 meters. People can visit

the observation deck 123 meters above

ground for a 360° panoramic view of the

area that includes both the city itself and

Shikanoshima. The view of the city at night

is so lovely the streets seem as if they are

inlaid with jewels. Those visitors who arrive

in the traditional Japanese clothing of yu-

kata or jimbei will be admitted for 400 yen,

half the usual price. Take this opportunity

to enjoy views of the city and wear Japa-

nese fashions before the offer expires on

Wednesday, August 31.
