Topic Description
In India, the telemedicine market is experiencing exponential growth – driven by the fact
that 80% of the doctors are in urban areas and 70% of the population is rural. A relaxed
regulatory regime, micropayment structures, widespread availability of cellular devices and
increased awareness in the population are leading to rapid proliferation. Leading hospitals
have already begun telemedicine efforts and 20+ telemedicine smartphone based players
are gearing up. We expect over a million telemedicine operators (para medical personnel) to
be operating by 2020.
Specifically, cardiovascular disease is at epidemic levels in India, with 1 in 4 adults at risk;
the average age of heart attacks is now around 40. iMedrix, a Silicon Valley Based startup
is entering the market with a lightweight, rugged, mobile ECG/EKG device for field screening
and triaging. iMedrix went from seed funding to post-trial revenue generation in less than 9
months. iMedrix devices are on a fast path to clinical workflow integration setting a
precedent for rapid trials and telemedicine subscription models. In a short period, 1000s of
readings have been taken and we anticipate that to grow to over a million later this year.

As we have traversed this path at rocket speed, we have had many valuable learnings. The
speakers will present an overview of the Indian telemedicine market and share their insights
and experiences.
Speaker Bios Srikanth Jadcherla is a well-known Low Power Guru, technologist, educator, entrepreneur, investor and green evangelist. He is on a mission to make education and healthcare accessible and affordable anywhere. Srikanth’s primary area of technical work is in low power chips and systems. He is a veteran of low power designs and pioneer of many energy efficiency techniques and principles. Jadcherla received an Intel Achievement Award, Intel’s highest honour, for his work on low power and is the author of 13 patents/applications. He was the founder of Archpro, where he created the theory of Voltage Aware Boolean analysis for low power ICs and systems. Archpro was acquired by Synopsys in 2007. His current area of research is on 3
rd generation low power designs, IOT protocols, IOT verification,
mobile big data, IOT medical access and smart grid energy control algorithms. He is a prolific speaker on wide ranging topics such as System/SOC verification, energy management, energy policy and educational reforms. Prof. Jadcherla holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IIT-Madras in India, and a master’s degree in computer science and engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a Charter member of the TiE and is actively involved in angel investments, incubations and mentoring activities.

Rich Goldman is Chancellor of Global University of Engineering and a consultant to the
semiconductor industry with more than 25 years of global experience developing strategic
alliances, technology standards and marketing programs that align with company strategy
and drive results. In 1986, Rich established Texas Instruments' ASIC operation in
Bangalore, India. In 1992, he founded Russian-American Software, amongst the first US-
Russia collaborations in software. While serving as a vice president at Synopsys, Inc., and
CEO of Synopsys Armenia, Rich helped develop a number of programs to foster high tech
education worldwide, garnering honors such as guest Professor at the Chinese Academy of
Science, and Honorary Professor at the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technologies. With
Michael S. Malone and the President of Armenia, Rich established the Armenia’s Presidential
Award for Contribution to Humanity Through IT, bringing to Armenia Steve Wozniak, Craig
Barrett, and Federico Faggin.
Rich has presented at TEDx, and coauthored the book “STARMUS” with Neil Armstrong,
Buzz Aldrin, Alexi Leonov, Kip Thorne, Richard Stzostak, George Smoot, Steven Hawking,
Brian May, and others. Rich earned a BSCS from Syracuse University, an MBA and MS
Engineering Management from The University of Dallas, and an honorary Doctorate from
The State Engineering University of Armenia.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Anurag Mairal is a Consulting Associate Professor of Medicine and the Director, Global
Exchange Program at Stanford Biodesign, Stanford University. In these roles, he leads
initiatives focused on applying the biodesign process to resource-constrained settings
globally. Concurrently, he is a co-founder and Executive Vice President of Orbees Medical, a
SF Bay Area-based strategy consulting firm serving global healthcare industry, with a focus
on medtech, pharmaceutical, and digital health industry. Recently, he took a two-year
sabbatical to take a senior leadership role at PATH, a major global health nonprofit based in
Seattle. In this role, he oversaw research and development, commercialization,
and implementation of technologies in PATH's medical devices, diagnostics, and digital
health divisions. Previously, he held several positions at Johnson & Johnson, including
Business Development Director and Product Director for structural heart, cardiology, and
peripheral vascular products at Cordis. Dr. Mairal has a PhD in chemical engineering from
the University of Colorado at Boulder and an MBA from the University of California at
Berkeley. He also holds an MS in chemical engineering from the Indian Institution of
Technology in Mumbai and a BS in chemical engineering from National Institute
of Technology, Raipur. He has more than 30 publications and seven issued patents.

application and will not cover the basic information covered in our longer course. For
this reason, we recommend that you sign up for this session if you have previously
attended the QB3 NIH SBIR workshop or have a basic understanding of the SBIR
process.
Our NSF SBIR/STTR workshop will address specific differences between the NSF and
NIH applications to successfully file a well-written SBIR/STTR grant application for
the June 16 NSF SBIR deadline (June 20 for STTRs). The course culminates in a
submission clinic that will ensure your application is correctly filed.
One or more team members from the company should be prepared to attend every
session.
Remember to bring your laptop; these will be working sessions.

Topic Description
Building a biotech company is challenging for a multitude of reasons. Among the greatest
challenges is the difficulty financing a company though the long journey towards the
creation of new medicine. Research, particularly basic discovery research is often perceived
as a cost and burden which needs to minimized in order to marshal resources towards the
advancement of a lead clinical program. However, it can be argued that creating “the next
Genentech” will remain metaphor rather than reality without investment in research by new
biotechs. I will share our experiences and observations building a biotech anchored on a
model of ongoing and substantial investment in basic discovery research. Among our
surprising observations: rather than being a cost, research has funded the company!
Speaker Bio
Austin Gurney joined OncoMed Pharmaceuticals at its founding as Vice President of
Molecular and Cellular Biology. Prior to OncoMed, Dr. Gurney worked at Genentech where
his research contributed to the discovery of numerous growth factors and cytokines. He has
authored or co-authored more than 60 papers and is listed as an inventor on over 600
patents related to therapeutic applications in immunology and cancer. Dr. Gurney has two
decades of experience in biotechnology and in the development of novel therapeutics.
Dr. Gurney conducted his Ph.D. work at Case Western Reserve University. He completed
post doctoral studies with Dr. Bryan Williams at the Cleveland Clinic, and at Genentech with
Dr. David Goeddel.

brings nearly 25 years of experience in health policy and reimbursement issues to 3D
clients. As Executive Director of Health Policy and Reimbursement at Merck for a decade,
she identified the business implications of state and federal policy developments including
the Medicare prescription drug program, Medicaid, health information technology, Big Data
access and methods, 340B, and reformed commercial markets. Prior to Merck, Jane was
Deputy Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project at Johns Hopkins University
School of Public Health, conducting research and devising policy on care management and
financing for people with chronic conditions. Jane also held a series of high profile
government positions. This included work as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Legislation in
the US Department of Health and Human Services, responsible for legislative policy for all
health-related areas, including Medicare, Medicaid, and prescription drug pricing. Recently
Jane was Vice President at Breakaway Policy Strategies focused on biopharma issues and
clients. Jane earned a Masters of Health Services Administration from the George
Washington University.

breakthrough medications, at a time when payers are struggling to manage increasingly
tight budgets and growing demand for healthcare services. Brian O’Shea and Jeff Hille, from
The Global Pricing and Market Access Group at Roche will discuss these challenges at a
global level, and will specifically describe how these challenges are addressed in
key individual countries.
Speaker Bios
Brian O’Shea is Director in the Global Pricing and Market Access group at Genentech/Roche.
He leads a team of 6 international payer strategy leaders responsible for pricing and global
market access for Alectinib, Zelboraf, Erivedge, Cotellic, Tecentriq and market preparation
for several early molecules. In his 8+ years at Genentech/Roche, he has had a variety of
leadership experiences and roles, including starting the Reimbursement Strategy Team in
Managed Care and Customer Opetarions, International Payer Strategy Leader on multiple
molecules including Zelboraf and Erivedge, and Channel and Access Solutions Marketing
team lead. He has over 25 years of industry experience and has previously worked at GSK,
Astrazeneca, and Merck.
Jeff Hille is Senior International Payer Strategy leader: Oncology Pipeline in the Global
Pricing and Market Access group at Genentech/Roche. He joined the company over 8 years
ago and held leadership positions in the Managed Care and Customer Operations, and
Health Economics and Outcomes Research groups, and as the International Payer Strategy
Leader on Perjeta. Jeff has over 14 years in of industry experience and has previously
worked at Eli Lilly.

Proteus Digital Health is a company with an innovative solution for activating patients and
helping improve medication adherence. This novel digital Medicines as a Service (MaaS)
offering is called Discover. Discover utilizes sensor-enabled pills and small wearable patch
that unlocks comprehensive data about medication adherence and clinical effectiveness,
empowers more meaningful conversations between patients and caregivers, and delivers

Speaker Bio
Prior to co-founding Proteus Digital Health, Mark Zdeblick served as the chief technology
officer for the optical switch group at K2 Optronics. Dr. Zdeblick is also founder, director and
past chief technical officer of Redwood Microsystems, developer of the world’s highest
performance microfabricated valves and electro-fluidic integrated circuits. While working in
Professor Calvin Quate’s engineering group at Stanford, Dr. Zdeblick invented the
microfabricated cantilever beam with an atomically sharp tip that enabled atomic force
microscopy. He holds a B.S. in civil engineering (Tau Beta Pi, Phi Eta Sigma) and a B.A. in
architecture, both from the University of Illinois, and an M.S. in aeronautics and

In the U.S. today, there are over 40,000 distillation columns performing more than 200 separations, which account for 49% of the total separation energy consumption in industry. Other energy intensive and environmentally harmful processes such as amine absorption are also used on a large scale, so a need exists to find alternative separation technologies. Of particular promise are membrane-based separations, which, unlike distillation, circumvent significant energy requirements for phase changes, and, unlike absorption, operate in continuous flow, thereby avoiding regeneration steps. Here, a broad overview on membrane-based gas separations will be presented, with an emphasis on current and emerging applications and materials. Next, three strategies will be presented on methods for designing new materials for efficient and productive separations. From a polymer perspective, two approaches will be presented, one on manipulating polymer morphology to control diffusion rates, and the other on using perfluorinated polymers to manipulate polymer-penetrant interactions. Finally, an alternative strategy will be presented, whereby highly selective inorganic particles are dispersed into a polymer matrix to improve transport performance in a platform of materials known as mixed-matrix membranes. Speaker Bio Zachary P. Smith is currently a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the Penn State Schreyer Honors College, conducting research with Prof. Hank Foley on porous carbon-based materials for applications in oxygen enrichment. Zach completed his graduate training in Chemical Engineering under the guidance of Profs. Benny Freeman and Don Paul at the University of Texas at Austin, developing structure/property relationships for gas diffusion and sorption in polyimides, perfluoropolymers, and related materials. His postdoctoral training, under the guidance of Prof. Jeffrey Long, focuses on designing coordination solids (i.e., metal-organic frameworks) for selective adsorption-based separations. Zach has co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and has been recognized with several awards including the Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Fellowship and the ACS Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research Award. He was also selected as a U.S. delegate to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting on Chemistry in 2013.

Isaac Ciechanover, M.D. | President & CEO, Atara Biotherapeutics
Dr. Isaac Ciechanover is a physician, investor and entrepreneur driven by a passion
to improve the practice of medicine. Motivated by the belief that the majority of
medical discoveries still lie ahead, he has dedicated the past 20 years to working
with entrepreneurs and life sciences organizations to advance medicine through
innovation and technology. He founded Atara Biotherapeutics in August 2012.

Byers. Earlier as Celgene's Executive Director for Business Development, he

her career. For AILA’s Northern California Chapter, she has served as Chair, Vice-

Please note that this workshop will exclusively focus on the specifics of the NSF
application and will not cover the basic information covered in our longer course. For
this reason, we recommend that you sign up for this session if you have previously
attended the QB3 NIH SBIR workshop or have a basic understanding of the SBIR
process.
Our NSF SBIR/STTR workshop will address specific differences between the NSF and
NIH applications to successfully file a well-written SBIR/STTR grant application for
the June 16 NSF SBIR deadline (June 20 for STTRs). The course culminates in a
submission clinic that will ensure your application is correctly filed.
One or more team members from the company should be prepared to attend every
session.
Remember to bring your laptop; these will be working sessions.

One 1-hour working session, plus one 1-hour filing clinic
Pre-submission review of specific aims by our course instructors
Session 1 will cover the application process, including registration

Student Registrants: In order for the student rate to be accepted, must submit proof of

All Oral and Poster Presenters: In order to present, the presenting author of each lecture
and poster must be registered as a conference attendee (not booth staff) and must
complete the registration process by paying online by April 18 to confirm intent to attend
and present at the meeting. If fees are not paid, submissions from that author will be
removed from the program.
Refund Policy: A processing fee of 20% will be collected on cancellations on or before April
1, 2016, after which the fees are non-refundable. Registration is transferable; must contact

About the Topic
Ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) is the new standard HPLC platform
delivering higher performance with small-particle columns used on low-dispersion systems
with pressure limits of 15,000 – 23,000 psi. This intermediate-level 1/2-day training
workshop will provide a critical overview the fundamental concepts, benefits, potential
issues, and best practices of UHPLC in pharmaceutical analysis of small molecule drugs and
recombinant biologics (monoclonal antibodies, mAbs)
Who Should Attend
This workshop is intended for analysts, managers, and researchers wishing to have a
thorough understanding the fundamentals and practices of UHPLC in pharmaceutical
analysis. A basic knowledge of HPLC is assumed and some practical hands-on experience is
highly recommended.
Workshop Agenda
UHPLC 1: Concept and Benefits
1. Overview and perspectives, Glossary, the modern HPLC platform with higher
performance, UHPLC concepts (the need for high pressure, void volume, peak
volume, instrumental bandwidth), UV flow cell design, dwell volume.
2. Benefits and case studies: Very fast separations with good resolution, very high
resolution analysis of complex samples, facilitating rapid method development,
flexibility to customize resolution, a modernized generic method for most drugs, a
greener HPLC platform.
UHPLC 2: Potential Issues, Practices, and implementation
1. Potential issues and how to mitigate (viscous heating, operating nuances,
compatibility to existing methods, injection precision, detector sensitivity vs. mixing
volumes.
2. Method translation (transfer) issues: method portability, method conversion
(translation), “What is method transfer?”, need for partial method validation, case
studies.
3. How to transition from HPLC to UHPLC, end-fittings, system performance tradeoffs,
Myths in UHPLC, references.
Learning Outcomes UHPLC in Biopharmaceutical Analysis
The attendee will learn the benefits, best practices and potential issues of UHPLC in
pharmaceutical analysis including method translation and how to get started in UHPLC.
About the Speakers
Dr. Michael W. Dong is a principal consultant in MWD Consulting focusing on consulting and
training services on HPLC/UHPLC, pharmaceutical analysis and drug quality. He was
formerly Senior Scientist in Analytical Chemistry and Quality Control at Genentech,
Research Director at Synomics Pharma, Research Fellow at Purdue Pharma, and Senior Staff
Scientist at Applied Biosystems / Perkin-Elmer. He holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry
from the City University of New York, and a certificate in Biotechnology from U. C. Santa
Cruz. He has 100+ publications including a bestselling book on chromatography (Modern

Speaker Bio
Dr. Allison Dupuy is a Partner in the Life Sciences division of Simon-Kucher & Partners in
San Francisco and leads the company’s life sciences practice on the west coast of the
US. She joined the team in San Francisco in August 2012 after spending 5 years in
Simon-Kucher’s Boston office.
In her work at Simon-Kucher, she focuses on strategic pharmaceutical marketing, value-
to-customer, market entry strategies, pricing and market access strategies, innovative
pricing strategies, product lifecycle strategies, licensing and valuation, market
forecasting and value communication, including global value story development and
implementation. She is a trusted advisor of leading pharmaceutical and biotech
companies across a wide range of therapeutic areas in all major healthcare markets
across the globe.
Dr. Dupuy received her Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from
Yale University and a B.A. in Physics with honors from Wellesley College where she was
a Goldwater Scholar and a Schiff Fellow.
She is the author and coauthor of several scientific publications and has research
experience in theoretical and experimental physics, biophysics, cell biology, cancer
biology, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and biochemistry.
