Magnat is actually known as a manufacturer of loudspeakers for the home and car hi-fi sector. With the LZR series headphones, the company is now taking up the topic of headphones. And with intensity.Anyone with proven expertise and a very prestigious name in the field if hi-fi and car hi-fi is surely not one to take on the topic lightly. Thus, the Magnat development team has broken new ground to play a leading role in the field of headphones. In developing the drivers, an ultra precise Kippel laser measuring system is used and hence the series name: LZR stands for „lazer“. Lazer also means laser and is intended to be an indication of the complex development work.

Of the three newly introduced models, the LZR 760 sits in the middle. It is the only on-ear headphones between the two around-ear headphones, the flagship model LZR 980 and entry level model LZR 580. The LZR 760/765 is available in different versions. The LZR 760 is available in black or white, the LZR 765 in a stylish charcoal-colored metallic look with brown cushions.

ConfigurationThe LZR 760/765 is designed for use on the go. At an impedance of 32 ohms, it lies at the upper limit of what you can expect from simpler mobile players or iPhones/smartphones. With an efficiency factor of 119 dB, it brings it here with solid volume. The power cable is removable. In addition to a normal cable, one with built-in three-button remote control is included that can be used with the headphones as a headset for a smartphone or iPhone. In addition, music playback can be controlled from the remote. The high-quality headphones includes a solid hard case in the scope of delivery to prevent damage during transport.

FitAt a weight of 153 or 156 grams, the LZR 765 is very light. This ensures a priori for a comfortable fit. The cushion of the head band with a wide adjustment range has little to do with it. Fortunately, the head band rests lightly, so that the LZR 760/765 conveys an extremely comfortable fit.

SoundWhat admittedly surprised me is that the LZR 760/765 delivers a solid bass range despite its light contact pressure and with its closed design. Normally, closed designs are dependent on a pretty tight fit to achieve optimum bass performance. Whether it is because the soft cushions make a good seal or perhaps because Magnate is using a different approach here, the bass range is impressive. It goes down deep, is more soft than tough as nails and provides a solidation foundation for every kind of music genre without being washed out by other frequency ranges. That would be a shame as the LZR 760/765 is one of the headphones that sounds both very relaxed, but on the other hand dives deep into the music and spoils with eagerness, i.e., dynamics, and many details, i.e., high resolution. The developers have succeeded here. Although presentation of the music is wonderfully dynamic and rich in detail, Magnat is never jumpy and never bores. A small tendency towards heat tonally cannot be denied, but it‘s probably just this that makes the charm of the sound pattern. Such tuning is perfect for on the go. It really pays to rely on good playback devices. Because even for expensive stationary headphone amplifiers, the LZR 760/765 makes an outstanding piece and develops an impressive sound potential. Good that the cable is removable. That way you can connect a longer power cable for use on the couch.

Conclusion„I expected that Magnat would aggressively take up the topic of headphones. What the developers have accomplished here, however, has clearly exceeded my expectations. This is a really, really good on-ear that delivers the right sound from a smartphone and from high-quality playback devices, be it mobile or stationary, displaying unbelievable potential.“
