My first description job was for theWisconsin Council of the Blind. We createda 13-minute promotional video from a set

of black and white photos of visuallyimpaired people at their jobs. I decidedon a male voicer and on myself to createthe description. It turned out well, exceptfor the videographer who walked off the

job because he couldnt wrap his headaround the description, arguing that itwasnt necessary to describe somethingthat was on the screen because I was onlyrepeating it. That experience taught methat some people cannot separate theact of seeing from that of hearing.

    1. Description of a painting:In this painting a warm russet lightsuffuses the Autumn scene and tells usthat it is late afternoon. The low angleof the afternoon sun makes the rippleson the water from the barely movingshell, large in the foreground, contrastwith the mirror-like surface of the river.

A few trees clothed in their fall colorsgrow out of a jut of land on the leftbank of the river downstream behindSchmitt's boat and cast theirreflections in perfect symmetry onthe mirror of the river's still surface.
