QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH (SECOND HAND)

FOR OUR MEDIA COURSEWORK WE HAD TO MAKE A SLASHER FILM TRAILER. BEFORE WE COULD MAKE THE TRAILER FIRST WE HAD TO GET SOME MARKET RESEARCH TOGETHER TO SEE WHAT OUR TARGET AUDIENCE LIKE IN HORROR FILMS. THEN ANALYSE THE DATA AND MAKE DECSIONS ON OUR TRAILER

DEPENDING ON WHAT WE DECIDED WERE THE CONSUMERS MOST LIKED TRAITS OF SLASHERS.

Global box office for all films released in each country around the world reached $34.7 billion in 2012, up 6% over 2011’s total, due to an increase in international box office ($23.9 billion) and U.S./Canada box office ($10.8 billion). All international regions with the exception of Europe experienced growth in 2012. Chinese box office ($2.7 billion) grew by 36% in 2012 to become the largest international market, surpassing Japan. This proves that the film industry has the longevity to survive for a very long time, even with the economic problems around the world and illegal downloading, people persist on going to the cinema for the social experience.

International box office is up 32% over five years ago, driven by growth in various international markets, including China, Russia and Brazil. This exposes that the cinema industry is expanding into new places and shows new opportunities for new and old film makers

This shows that in the UK and ROI in 2012 Horror movies were 7% of all releases, as well as 5.2% of total box office. Considering the vast amount of genres 7% is quite impressive. This shows that our choice of Horror movies was one of the best possible as there is a market for this genre yet not too much competition with 45 releases.

This is a table of all the independent films released in the UK and ROI in 2012 by genre. Horror movies are even more prevalent in this table, with 9.5% of all releases it is a higher % than all film releases, this is good as it shows independent horror films in terms of percentage are preferred to mainstream horrors. Since we are doing an independent film, this data shows that we have made the right choice in terms of what type of horror we should do.

This is a graph of the percentage of releases of films by genre in the UK and ROI, if you look at the black line (horror) it is apparent that there has been a steep increase from 2011 onwards showing that horrors are becoming more and more popular. I feel this also shows that we have made the right choice in going for horror films as this data shows now is a great time to capitalise on the horror ‘love in’

This table shows the releases of UK independent films in the UK and ROI, for the classification ’15’ there has been 67 releases, the highest number of releases for any classification with the ‘Top performing title’ being Sweeney Todd, a sort of horror/musical/thriller, this shows that horrors do well under the classification 15. this also shows that for the classification ‘18’ the ‘Top performing title’ is Dredd, again this shows that independent horrors do well under this classification. Both are the standout options for our slasher. I don’t think we will make it a 12 as there will need to be both a lot of blood in our picture as well as scenes of sexual intercourse.
