Audience expectations

I interviewed a couple of members that are the target audience for my groups film opening. I asked them several different questions from twitter and a hand out questionnaire that I made. The questions I asked where based around what they would expect from our film and the given genre.

I asked on twitter a direct message to Eli, who is a young teenage girl at 17 living in London. I asked her ‘What type of music would you expect in a teen drama/crime film?’ Her response is seen below.

From Eli’s response I got the impression that she would expect music that she would recognise. This is a very important convention in teen drama, especially British teen drama’s as the music is very current and most people have heard of it.

I also asked Matilda on twitter :‘ What would you expect from a teen drama/crime film opening?’ The reason why I asked this question is because that is exactly what my group is creating, therefore by finding out what someone from out target audience would expect it would give us a clear indication of how we could portray the genre.

From Matilda’s response we tried to incorporate the expectations in our opening film. For example the violence and drug use.

This is a question that I created to get a clearer sense of what our target audience would expect. I had a box where the target audience would write their name, age, gender and ethnicity.

The box on top is useful as it enables me to group the target audience to see any similarities and differences with answering the questions.

Alomgir and Shorai are both males around the same age. They are from ethnic background. They had similar answers in the questions. • They expect a black working/lower class community to

be explored in our film opening.• They expect to see a council estate • They also expect the plot to be about drugs or gangs.

From the title ‘BLUNT’ Audrey and Nyasha expect that our film will be ‘straight to point.’ The props that they believe would be essential for our film genre are knife, hoodies and bikes.Just like Alomgir and Shorai they would also expect to see council estates.

Miranda believes the title ‘BLUNT’ connotes rude and uncomfortable. She also would expect a ‘revenge’ scenario in our opening.

Revenge is an initial idea that my group had in mind when planning for the plot of our film opening.

Miranda also said ‘it would be interesting if an upper-class society would be explored.’

Overall from the questionnaire I came to the conclusion that from our genre our target audience would expect to see council estates, drugs and knife related issues. These are conventions that where also found in the film openings that my group watched.
