Bid ‘n’ Bump Instructions
Every year, there’s a fierce scramble to win seats at the annual blow-outs hosted by our rockingest party
animals and at the exquisite meals crafted by our resident gourmets. We’re upping the competition by
including a selection of these multiple-winner events on the Bid ‘n’ Bump Board.
When the evening begins at 6pm, the Bid ‘n’ Bump Board, located on the southern wall of the Parish
Room (to the left of the entrance) will have a line for every event, with the appropriate number of
winnable spaces marked out. Say, for instance, that the Auction Team was holding a build-your-own
cheesesteak party for eight people—it’d look like this:
You, being a champion of cheesesteaks, would naturally want to bid on a ticket to this event, and you’d
want to bring your best friend. Simply get a double-wide Post-It note from the lovely Bid ‘n’ Bump Board
assistant and mark your paddle number and your starting bid on it, then place the Post-It note over two
open squares for the event. This is still a bid for two seats (meaning $400 total), but the double-wide
allows you and your best friend to attend as a unit.
Meanwhile someone else bid on just one spot. The Board would then look like this:
14
$200
52
$200
Don’t get too complacent, though: if the rest of the event fills up and someone new wants to bid, he
could bump you by placing his own Post-It note—marked with his own paddle number and his own
higher bid—right over yours.
However, they need to use another double-wide post-it to bump you. If they are a singleton, they must
bump another single Post-It.
How can you avoid getting bumped by higher bids? Just stalk the Board like an eagle-eyed maniac, that’s
how—we encourage multiple bumps and repeat bids!
The Bid ‘n’ Bump Board will be open until 8:30pm—bid early, and bump often!

This tour is guaranteed to give you more reasons to hold your head up high when you tell people you are from
Philadelphia. Take in little-known history on a private showing of the Preservation Alliance's popular "Banker's
Row" tour in Old City. Philadelphia was the nation's first financial center, and you will learn how Alexander
Hamilton's vision played an important role in putting our new country on sound financial footing and paved the
path for Philadelphia to become the "Workshop of the World" in the 1890s. Yes, in the 1830s the financial center
shifted to New York, but it was a Philadelphia financier who showed Wall Street how to do it. Dane is a Certified
Philadelphia Tour Guide and a guide for the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. Tour length: 2-3 hours.

For many years now, Rick and Dane and Joan and Joy have been delighting lucky First Unitarians with great feasts
and dynamic beer offerings. Remember the rabbit stew made with three bottles of Ommegang Ale? How about
the dinner replicating King Midas’ feast with a collection of ancient ales? The Belgian beef carbonade did go pretty
well with the collection of Flemish beers, didn’t it?
Well, we try to do better every year. This year there will be an element of surprise: Rick and Dane will be
featuring their favorite regional brewery that provides exciting takes on interesting styles of beer. Joan will scour
the Reading Terminal Market for intriguing ingredients, perhaps reflecting a memorable trip they have taken. The
only catch is that our favorite brewery will remain a secret until September 22. But trust us – you will be talking
about it for weeks. Held in the Wells home at The Drake in Center City (great views). Donated by Dane and
