From the President
We will be informed and entertained at the April meeting by Gary Bold ZL1AN with two topics he is currently interested in. They are How to write a technical article and Compact antennas for retirement complexes. Our magazine content is produced by volunteers. You get from them what people like yourselves have taken the time to create for your benefit. Hear how to over-come your reticence and become published. All of us will need to know about the second topic (eventually). Unless you can pay staff to look after you in your infirmity, accepting the limita-tions of downsizing includes your antenna. What can you do? Living forever in good health is not yet an alternative.
The May meeting will as usual consider the Remits to the NZART Conference in Hamilton. This will be followed by the annual “Show & Tell” evening where members bring along their current project to show what they are up to and inspire our members to try something different after seeing how the presenters have solved their problems. A prize will be awarded for the best
presentation. This advance notice will give you time to organise your ideas. I see it as a way to show the enthusiasm and strength of the club.
There is an opportunity for the VHF Group to gain access to a new site that could be de-veloped for repeaters. A Proposal has been sent to the Lifegate Trust where the facility previously operated by ZL1TCI is located. The Trustees expect to discuss the Proposal in April and report back to the VHF Group on the terms they require for us to use the site. The initial driver is the development of a Data Mesh repeater which can support any format of high volume data including ATV.
To keep the prospect of ATV alive new “Form 10” documents will be raised and ap-
proval sought from the members to go ahead with the work involved at the previous ATV site of Nihotupu. Bring your opinions to the meeting. Your will get to hear something of what is proposed.
It is intended to place some of the club history on the web site with an “About Us” button to be added to the main page. If you have history in electronic or scanned form it will be welcome for formatting to place on the site.
The Unitary Plan Pre-hearing meeting has taken place. A partial summary is now available on the web site https://hearings.aupihp.govt.nz/hearings . Select Topic 042 and click on Docu-
SPECTRUM h p://www.qsl.net/zl1bq 4 Vol 52 April 2015
ments. Select the Pre-hearing Meeting Report. The planning staff will summarise the Pre-hearing outcomes by 09 April where decisions are currently shown as Pending.
A slightly revised timetable for the next step of Mediation will now begin on Friday 24 April. All of the interested parties get together to see what areas can be agreed on so that they don’t need to be covered in the Hearings to come beginning on Thursday 25 June. Evidence must be written and made available to the organisers of the Hearings by Wednesday 03 June for distri-bution to the Commissioners and parties contending the NZART submission. May will be a busy month in preparation for the Hearing on topics not settled by Mediation.
After a clean up in the Clubrooms more work is required to realise the value in recent dona-tions. There will be a Working Bee at the Clubrooms to photograph, measure and weigh some of the more valuable items with a view to advertising them for sale. This will expose them to a larger market than the usual “market days” which only occur 3 times each year at the moment. The probable date is Sat 03 May.
A new broadband HF antenna with new guy ropes was successfully fitted in February. An SWR check showed adequate performance on all of the HF amateur bands. In early May (date TBA in April) there will be another Working Bee at Klondyke. (See Spectrum March 2015) This will need 2-3 tower climbers to address the worst of the rust areas with wire brushes and protective paint. We expect that the tower will need a repaint by 2018. There are other items needing at-tention on the ground for those wanting to help at Klondyke without climbing. An email will be sent to members and others who register their interest.
One possible project for the year is to initiate a North Fest to provide a Forum for our region and the activities of local amateurs within a 2-3 hour driving radius. It would take place in years when Auckland is not hosting the Technology Convention. Planning will begin based on Satur-day 27 June centred on the VHF Group clubrooms. This is midway between the Hamilton mar-ket days and will provide a mid-winter social focus. The VHF Group is looking for topics that will interest the audience. Think about practical topics. The “how to” advice to solve a problem or do something more cheaply or make something that you can’t readily buy would be good starting points. We have a list of people to approach who have spoken in the past to approach but at the now short notice we look forward to hearing from you which will give us a better chance of success.
Stop Press The Jumbo Challenge will take place on Wednesday, 15 April at the Albany In-door Bowling Club, Library Lane, Albany Village from 7:30 pm. Supper will be provided. The Auckland VHF Group puts out the call to mount a team.

Meeting notice
13th April 2015 7.30pm, Hazel Avenue Club Rooms
(Located on left at the end of Hazel Avenue)
The Evenings Subject:
Dr Gary Bold’s current interests”
Dr Gary Bold will tell us about the art of writing technical articles
such as fill the pages of Break In or your club magazine.
This will be followed by his current practical interest in compact antennas. This is relevant to those older operators who may be contemplating having to downsize to a "Retirement Com-plex". It is a subject that will be of interest to us all (eventually).
The VHF Group wants to keep ATV alive. There will be a description of the Form 10 docu-ments to be raised for the Nihotupu site using frequencies that may be allocated when decisions have been made by Spectrum Management following the shutdown of Analogue TV.
Another meeting not to be missed!
EVERYBODY WELCOME

VHF managers’ comments
Simon ZL2FAE assembled and operated a field station from a Paekakariki Hill lookout using only 5 Watts each band. His central Wellington location along with QRP and high gain VHF and UHF long boom Yagi’s greatly assisted his final winning score. Well done!

Operator comments
Hi-Gain 215B (2Mt) 15 element 2 metre band Yagi (The blowtorch)
I operated QRP as a single operator /p under my own call sign (ZL2FAE) on 6, 2, 70 cm, and 23 cm on Saturday and Sunday from Paekakariki Hill lookout
Thanks to all the operators from Christchurch who made it worth while
A very poor showing from both Wellington and Auckland VHF groups
Antennas: 6el Yagi at 4 metres on 2 m, wire delta loop at 4 metres on 6 m.
Enjoyed the contest thanks. Hope for a few more ZL4's next time
23 cm: DB6NT Transverter with 1.5W output FT290R as exciter, 16 el FlexaYagi, hori-zontal polarized
Was a bit disappointed not to work anyone except the locals on 23 cm but I think the con-ditions early in the week may have put some people off
Operated /p along Scenic Drive 400m from Arataki Visitor Centre towards Waiatarua, Altitude 215m ASL
23 cm Yaesu 897 (145MHz) DEMI transverter with 30 Watt Mitsubishi bock to 48 ele-ment loop Yagi at 12 meters
144 MHz 4 x 9 El Yagi and 2 X 4CX250b 600+ Watts
On the Sunday tested with Wayne ZL2BKC on 3.4, 5.7 and 10 GHz from Cape Rodney to Egmont. 10 GHz proved to be best band with signals 5/9 at 337 km. We switched to FM and had a chat.
No EME or VK this year
Running QRP was real hard this contest and ZL2ADU was so strong FE overload at times (Had to wait till ZL2ADU had woken up the ZL3's and 1's and pounce on them.)
70 cm Station FT 790R + PA 20 W Output, 6 el portable dual band Maspro, horizontal polarized
2 m Yaesu 847 to HB LDMOS amp 800W 9 element DZ7ZB at 14 meters
Work ZL1IU at 921 km from CHCH, This was a big thrill as it’s my first ZL1 contact from home station on the 2 metre band, since first licenced in 1970!
Was late getting on and had to put up alternative 2 m Yagi as normal one (14 element) was damaged in NW winds early in the week
7.5 metre Pole with thrust bearing 2 metre from top and GX1000 rotator on 1.5mt pole (9 metre total height). 4 x 3mm SS wire rope guys with fencing strainers to Y posts (Warratahs). (Needed for this Wellington location!)
The highlight was hearing ZL1AKW in Tauranga on 23 cm at 380 km but not a 2 way contact so no go!
The rules for VHF-UHF-SHF-EHF Contests, as administered by the Auckland VHF Group; on behalf of all VHF groups are available on the NZART website: http://www.nzart.org.nz/activities/contest-rules/rules-vhf-and-above/

Motorola Oncore VP GPS Receivers
The VP Oncore is Motorola’s original credit card-sized 8-channel GPS receiver. It
measures just 2” x 3 1/4” x 1/2”, has very low power requirements, and is well suited
for embedded applications. The VP Oncore has the capability of acting as a DGPS reference station for greater position accuracy.
The units on offer have been in storage for some time, and the tinplate screen covers show some signs of corrosion – see photo. Most of the units have a sticker attached saying “Prog NMEA” and are likely to output data in NMEA V2.0 serial format.
Interface is via a 10-pin board header – see reference below for pinout details. Power supply is 5.0v +/-0.25V. Module requires an external active GPS antenna (5V power supplied by receiv-er module). GPS connector is a snap-on type OSX. Output data includes a 1PPS (one pulse per second) output and TTL level Tx and Rx data lines.
More details can be found at : ftp://ftp.tapr.org/gps/motorola/oncore.eng.notes.pdf
