New Action Groups for Auckland TULIP TALKS Parkinson's Auckland's Local Newsletter ISSUE 4 - SEPTEMBER 2019 Parkinson's Action Groups have been extended across the Auckland region in recent months with new groups forming to cover the ever growing demand for Parkinson's services in New Zealand's largest city. In this issue of Tulip Talks, we introduce you to some of our Action Group members and extend an invitation to anyone interested in joining them to step forward. Action Groups meet once a month and work with the Community Engagement Advisor Northern and the Community Educators to enhance Parkinson's services around the Auckland region. With Action Groups now functioning in the central, east, west and north shore areas, we also hope to form a group for South Auckland from 2020. Parkinson's Action Group members may be people living with Parkinson's, be a carer of someone living with Parkinson's or simply have an interest to help. A diverse range of skills in AG members mean the groups are equipped to represent our members and help deliver a variety of activities to their Parkinson's communities. Action Groups will have 4-8 members and a commitment of at least a year is ideal. Action Group members may assist with fundraising and awareness activities, be asked to speak at events and will be a representative of Parkinson's New Zealand in their community. There is space on all Action Groups for anyone interested in helping in this way. Please contact Karen our Community Engagement Advisor [email protected] or 021 302 850 should you wish to find out more about joining a local Action Group. “After being diagnosed with early onset PD, I’ve become determined to fight the progression of the disease and to maintain my positive attitude. The AG provides a forum to support and encourage others.” Robyn Cotton, North Shore & Rodney Action Group Introducing AG members from the region "When my partner Mark was diagnosed with Parkinson's, joining the AG was a way for me to do something to help him and others through their journey.” Jo van Kan, West Auckland Action Group "Too often the task of organising fundraising and other activities is left to the same weary group of people. By being a member of a Parkinson's Action Group, I can help where it is really needed". Peter Coulson, West Auckland Action Group Over the past year Auckland Council Leisure has been piloting a project that involves upskilling some of its exercise professionals around how to prescribe exercise for people living with Parkinson’s. And now it has launched Parkinson’s exercise programmes in six of its leisure centres: Stanmore Bay, Otara, Papatoetoe (Allan Brewster), Manurewa, Pakuranga (Lloyd Elsmore) and Mangere (Moana Moana-Nui-a Kiwa Leisure Centre). Having recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's being able to meet other people in my situation who hadknowledge, and openly shared their experiences,  was awesome on many levels.  It was great to listen to a widerange of inspirational speakers and be involved in exercise classes, socialise with people with Parkinson's andtheir partners, and discuss and share problems that may be facing us in our every day lives. I left with an upbeatfeeling – an attitude that life is not over with this diagnosis, to live the best life possible and not to let Parkinson'sdefine me. I would like to thank the Parkinson's New Zealand for a well organised event and a great weekend.

Summerset Falls Retirement Village Warkworth, Summerset by the Park Flatbush,Summerset at Heritage Park Ellerslie and Summerset at Monteray Park Hobsonville arehosting events and dates will be available via your Community Educator. These events aretea tastings, with a $10 entry fee with $5.00 coming to Parkinson's.

To challenge themselves ineach of their own way, whether it be balance, strength orjust not staying at home hiding from the world. By the endof class the weather was still grey, the wind was blowingand the rain was threatening to fall.
