Dear music lovers,
Welcome to the 2014 concert season of Auckland Choral.
“Music is the most direct and mysterious way of conveying and evoking feeling,” says neurologist Oliver Sacks. “It is a way of connecting one consciousness to another. The nearest thing to telepathy is making music together.”
For me, singing is the simplest way of communicating the essence of the human spirit, of hope and love, across all continents. We sing to energise and calm ourselves, ease stress and pain, socialise, bond or even move ourselves to tears. Time so often stands still during these moments.
Come and experience this empowering feeling during a live concert and be carried away in our beautiful Town Hall with its sumptuous acoustics. There is much on offer – from the most famous music of all time, to inspiring, exciting and new creations.
I look forward to sharing our love of singing with you.

One hundred years after the start of WWI AucklandChoral presents a moving programme entitled ‘War and Peace’. The concert opens with the powerful and famous Toccata and Fugue by JS Bach. Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, his most popular mass, was composed as a cry for peace, and portrays an era of unprecedented political and military unrest in Austria.German composer Michael Renhart reflects his deepwish for peace in the pure structure of his Requiem,a work unfinished at the time of his death in New Zealand. Similar sentiments are found in Wilfred Owen’s revered Anthem for Doomed Youth, which is set to music by David Hamilton for this special Anzac Day Commemoration.

It’s Christmas . . . which means it is time to give yourself over to the fervour and divine inspiration of Handel’s Messiah, the cornerstone of classical music!
First performed in Dublin in 1742, this work remains the world’s most popular oratorio. From the spellbinding recitative ‘Comfort Ye’ to the magnificent, resounding ‘Hallelujah’ chorus, Handel’s music never fails to move its audience as it retells the most famous story of all time.

Make an investment in the future of Auckland Choral.
Please support Auckland Choral’s artistic vision. The Auckland Choral Foundation, a registered charity, is proud to promote and support Auckland Choral, Auckland’s only symphonic choir. Our city deserves this opportunity for ambitious works and will benefit even after the music stops, adding to Auckland’s place on the world’s cultural map.
The vision has many aspects such as singing scholarships, internships, the Young Singers Programme which includes liaison with school choirs, and new commissions. The Foundation also works with other choirs and cultural groups.
The continuing concert production of large-scale choral works depends on further support. We need you! Your donation is tax deductible and for a bequest or a sum over $1,000 you will be invited into the Auckland Choral Foundation’s
Benefactors’ Circle for special events. All donations, large and small, are welcome.
To discuss your donation or bequest, please contact [email protected] or visit our website, www.aucklandchoral.com
The Peter Gibbons Memorial Scholarship
Managed by the Auckland Choral Foundation, the Peter Gibbons Memorial Scholarship is offered to vocal performance students. The scholarship enables the recipient to experience and understand what a symphonic choir does and provides an opportunity to get to know important choral repertoire.

Auckland Choral, with its 158-year tradition of singing the great choral works from the baroque to contemporary commissions, is Auckland’s only symphonic choir. Led by Music Director Professor Uwe Grodd, Auckland Choral has been going from strength to strength, and their 2013 Dream of Gerontius performance was quoted in the New Zealand Herald as being “a choral spectacular.”
Some of our audiences’ comments:
“What a glorious sound.”
“I was blown away by the wonderful performance.”
“...a real high point in our years of attending music events.”
Auckland Choral was recently honoured to receive one of the four donations made as part of the 2013 Arts Foundation Award for Patronage.
