HAPA SUSHI, which opened in the Rock CreekPlaza Center in 2006, was bursting out its seams, saysRichard Fielder, who owns the business with his wife, Vanessa.

The new location, formerlythe Spice of India restaurant,more than doubles capacity

to 85 seats. The Fiedlers, whoretained the same staff, haveexpanded the menu toinclude more burgers anddesserts.

Vanessa Fiedler has been asushi chef for more than 26 years, starting as a teen in a Santa Cruz eatery.Two menu favorites are the Tsunami Roll and the Hapa Popper.

The Tsunami Roll is spicy tuna and shrimp on the inside and on theoutside - avocado, salmon and three of our sauces and crunchies,according to Richard Fiedler. The Hapa Popper is spicy tuna, creamcheese and jalapeno tempuraed and topped with three sauces, macadamia

nuts and green onions. These are things we came up with, using creativityand just trying things here and there.

He attributes the success of the business to using quality ingredients.

It is a mom and pop, hand-made with fresh sauces and things are madefrom scratch, he said. You just cant beat food made from scratch.

Prior to the move, Fiedler did some remodeling to the new site, redoingthe floors and carpet, and tearing down a wall to open up a dance floor.Now the restaurant brings in live music a couple of time a month.

Mix it up to keep movingSeven weeks into the Lighten Up! competition, Alan

Hammond found himself even more mixed-up than hewas when he started!

That sounds like a negativething, but for Alan, variety is thespice of life. By mixing up his

workout routine, personal trainerKathy Kaplan of Anytime Fitnesskeeps Alan interested, motivatedand on his toes.

What I like about Kathy is thatwhen I think Im getting a little bitstronger, she mixes it up to keepchallenging me. She breaks meinto new stuff when she sees mehitting a plateau. Kathy is trying toteach me all-around fitness so Idont get bored with one thing,

Alan explained.As part of that switching-up, Alan is moving on from

weight machines. Instead, Kathy has taught him to usethe TRX system, a Navy SEAL-inspired system forresistance training that utilizes ones own body weightand some simple straps to get a full-body workout.

Its really challenging, Alan said. Its harder thanusing weights to me, because my body weight is typicallya lot more weight than I would be lifting on a machine.Plus its a lot of stability and core work too.

The challenge of TRX appeals to Alan, as does theportability of the system.

TRX can be done anywhere I go, with business travel,or even camping. I can strap it to a tree or whatever,

Alan said, which means I have no excuses to not work out! This no-excuses mentality has transferred to the way

Alan thinks about food. Alan keeps his calorie count atabout 1600 per day, loading up on nutritious foods likeoatmeal and fruit for breakfast, turkey

wraps, protein shakes, and light butdelicious dinners. He and his wifeprepare dishes like mahi mahi withgreen beans, asparagus and

couscous with mushroom sauce for dinner. They alsohave found a new love in spaghetti squash, which they eatin place of pasta with ground turkey and tomato sauce.

We try to eat really well. Plus putting it allinto the Anytime Fitness website really helpsme. Before, I didnt know I was getting so muchsodium from certain things, or where mynutrients were coming from, Alan said.

Knowing whats causing problems makes itpossible for Alan to make little changes in hisdiet that make a big difference. When he foundout how much sodium he was getting from asimple sandwich, he switched things up toeliminate that problem.

Now we oven-roast a turkey breastevery Sunday instead of buying deli meat,

Alan said. That small change makes ahuge difference in his sodium intake.

Do I crave goodies every once in a while? Yeah, but typically I dont feel like

Im missing anything or like Im on a diet at all, Alan said. Learning the ins and outs of nutritionhas been huge. Its a real eye-opener.

Along with Kathys motivation, the knowledgeAlan has gained is carrying him onward to greaterlevels of fitness and health.

Overcoming injury to get fitAlans competitor Kent Totten has been working withRich Smith, personal trainer at Courthouse Athletic Club,to get fit for 2011. The day he began the Lighten Up!competition, Kent broke two toes in a work accident. Thisinjury delayed his progress but didnt dampen his spirits.

Its just crazy. But you do what you have to, Kent said.He has continued to work out in spite of his injuries,

which make it difficult and painful to work out, takingcare to not overdo it or injure himself further by workingcarefully.

Kents busy schedule and lack of motivation have been ahindrance to his fitness regimen in the past few years. Heused to work out regularly but fell off the fitness wagonsome years ago when he injured his knee. Now he knowsits time to get back into a healthy routine.

Im looking to improve my all-around health and getback into shape so I could compete if I wanted to. Id liketo be a competitive athlete at something, whether itsracquetball, or running a half marathon or something,Kent said.

One of the biggest challenges for Kent, common toanyone who wants to establish a fitness regimen, is theresistance to a new routine.

Its so much easier to not come to the gym when yourenot in the habit ofgoing, Kent said.

However, after several weeks of dragginghimself out the door toget to the gym, Kent isfinding it easier andeasier to make thesacrifice.

I was really pleasedbecause I hit that pointlast week where I didnthave to make myself

come to the gym. I wanted to work out. It was noticeable,Kent said, excitedly.

That kind of progress is exactly what Kent and Richhave hoped to see. Along with his new-founddetermination, Kent finds some of his workouts aregetting easier.

Last week I went up on weight and reps, so Ive alreadynoticed an improvement in just the last couple weeks.

With his determination solid and his routinestabilizing, Kent is on the right track to move forward

with his plan to get competitive.
