Auburn Riverside 2012 State Test Scores Are Highest in School History

and Soar Above State Average

More Auburn Riverside students than ever before outperformed the state

and area high schools on both End-of-Course and HSPE state tests. In fact, 2012 state test scores reveal some of the highest scores in school history and soar above the state average.

• End-of-Course (EOC) math scores across all grade levels are at an all- time high. EOC algebra is 3.1% above the state average and 6.8-9.5% higher than neighboring high schools. Additionally, over 87% of all 10th grade students passed the EOC algebra exam.

• 10th grade reading scores are the highest in school history and 6.4%

above the state average. Over 87% of all 10th graders passed the reading exam.

• 10th grade math scores are 3.2% above the state average.

The Ravens Improve on the Washington Achievement IndexAuburn Riverside continues to make signifi cant gains on the Washington Achievement Index—a comprehensive measurement of how schools in Washington are performing over the previous two years. This demonstrated academic improvement affi rms Auburn schools are making continuous growth in student achievement.

Ravens Give Back

Auburn Riverside kicked off the giving season early by hosting a school-

wide fundraiser in late October. Orga-nized by the Random Acts of Kindness Club and the Sophomore Class, a ‘wear your hat to school day’ fundraiser gener-ated more than $1,300 to benefi t students in need. According to teacher Julie Mo-berg, “Students donated $1 to wear a hat to school. All proceeds went directly into our school’s InvestED funds, which pays for lab fees, sports uniforms, and ASB cards for students in need.” Students also donated their pocket change during a ‘miracle minute,’ in which classrooms competed to collect the most money in one minute. “Finding ways to help others brings great energy to our school,” says Principal Dave Halford. The giving doesn’t stop there. The

RAKE Club grants “Winter Wishes” dur-ing the holiday season. Staff and coun-selors nominate students in crisis or fam-ilies in need and the RAKE Club collects donations in order to provide personal-ized gifts for all family members. The Key Club stuffs stockings for a special needs holiday party and the Jazz Band performs holiday music throughout the community.

In its fourth year, the Raven Spirit Club helps organize caravans to sporting events

and cheering sections in the stands. The Raven Spirit Club also recruits spectators for drama theatricals and band, choral and orchestra performances.

According to student Drew Wallen, “It’s all about building a positive environment...I want to build a legacy of excellence for my class and for all of the classes to come.”

In fact, Wallen and his classmates have been nicknamed the “Noise Boys”. Whether it’s meeting at the pool to cheer on the water polo team, carpooling to state volleyball playoffs or attending the Veterans Day marching band competition, the Noise Boys guarantee to be seen—and heard.

“Our goal is to cheer for everyone’s passions and interests,” says Noise Boy Michael Lucchesi.

Recently the Noise Boys recruited over 60 students to travel to Kentwood and cheer on the girls volleyball squad in their fi rst state playoff game. During the month of October they even dressed in pink in support of breast cancer awareness month.

According to Noise Boy Brett Davis, “It’s all about building community.”

Student-Musicians Earn Prestigious Honors

Raven Spirit on the Rise

Eleven Auburn Riverside student-musicians have been selected into the

WMEA All-State and NAfME All-Northwest performing groups.

The 11 honorees will participate in the 59th Annual WMEA State and NAfME Northwest Division Conference in Portland

on February 14-17, 2013. The fi nest high school musicians in each musical genre will rehearse together under the direction of world-renowned conductors and present a Gala Concert at the end of the weekend.
