It’s the end of April, the sun has shown its face again after a night of snow, and we’re waiting at a roadside café just south of Levan-ger for the main protagonist for one of today’s meetings. We don’t have to wait long for a nearly new Volvo truck to turn into the car park, and driver Stein Lindsethmo climbs out of the cab.

Stein is driving a fully loaded Volvo FH16, 750 6x2 fitted with with Mählers grader blades/jaw blades HB3-N and the MC2 control system. A control system which Stein really enjoys using.

“Yes, my work environment has really improved since I got the MC2,” explains Stein, pointing out all the functions he can control from the driver’s seat.

The MC2 contains a small, handy panel with a joystick and buttons. The control system manages the plough and grading equipment.

It’s possible to set the plough and grading equipment to automatically lift when the driver selects reverse, to mention just one example of how the MC2 improves the work environment.

When the driver then wants to lower the equipment again, all he has to do is press a button. This lowers all the equipment to the position it was in when reverse was selected.

Stein has also added almost all the equipment available, so he also has a GPS unit, TV, weighing equipment, four reversing cameras and air suspension surveillance.

He also has the reporting system which monitors ploughing and reports to Stein’s employer, Mesta.This system detects when Stein lowers the plough or grader blade and measures the distance, and when ploughing or grading is complete it reports back to Stein, who checks his iPad to make sure everything is okay and then confirms this.

This completes the invoicing information and so there’s no printing of drive notes or any other kind of reporting required.

We start chatting about the grader blade, and Stein explains that it was easy to choose a blade this time around.

installation dimensions (better ground clearance) and that it can also be controlled with the MC2 as well as other plough equipment, I didn’t hesitate,” says Stein.

The blade is used all year round as he grades snow and ice in winter and gravel in summer.

As we’ve already noted, Stein sets great store by a good work environ-ment, and in that regard we get talking about the Flexiway, Mählers’ new plough which has more or less revolutionised the plough industry with its innovative features.

Besides the side extension of ± 450 mm, its many advantages include the fact that it’s possible to apply more pressure or reduce the pressure. The fact that it’s articulated, allowing it to follow cambered or uneven roads, allows this plough to be adjusted precisely to suit the road surface.

All this, together with a range of other smart functions, definitely improves the driver’s environment and the results as well. And if all goes according to plan, Stein will be one of many drivers testing the Flexiway in the winter of 2014/2015.

So we have to hope that next winter is “better” than last year’s low-snow season, when we saw barely 40 plough operations compared with the normal 110–120.

Flexiway II – the next step in the new generation of snow ploughs In 2012, Mählers presented its Flexiway diagonal plough, an innovative and completely new concept in an otherwise rather traditional industry: snow ploughing with trucks.

The option of side-shifting the plough ± 450 mm, being able to switch easily from left-hand ploughing to right-hand ploughing, the option of pressurising the cutter with full control and in an infinitely variable manner, based on two separate and articulated sections, are just some of the solutions that were welcomed with open arms.

Not only did Flexiway offer revolutionary technical solutions, but also innovation which changed the way in which people ploughed. This led to dramatic improvements in the end results.

Thousands of hours, thousands of kilometres, all driven by experienced, professional snow plough operators, have resulted in some valuable information which has now culminated in the Flexiway II, a substantial upgrade to the first version.

Rossö 2010 is a diagonal plough fitted with spring-loaded cutters at a 15° positive cutting angle. To enable quieter operation the steel cutters are individually suspended in four polyurethane plastic elements in each cutting section. This provides optional road-following and any ruts. The low noise level provides a pleasant environment for both the driver and the surrounding areas. The plough can be fitted with cassettes for rubber cutters. The topside of the plough is made in an easy-to-replace plastic material thanks to screw-on ribs. The plough can be supplied with a wheel set or slide shoes.

Rossö 2010 Combi is a development of our standard plough in the Rossö plough series. It is fitted with an hydraulically adjustable topside via two parallel connected cylinders. This enables snow at, for example, crossings and turning areas to be forced out.

The Rossö double cutter plough is a diagonal plough fitted with spring-loaded steel blades at a 15° positive cutting angle. It is equipped with double cutters for efficient ploughing, espe-cially when working with slushy snow and wet roads. For quieter operation, the steel blades are independently suspended in four polyurethane plastic elements in each cutting section. This provides optimal adaptation to the road surface, including any ruts. The low noise level is agreeable for both the driver and the immediate surroundings. The rear slush cutter consists of five hydraulically operated lifting beams each fitted with two pivoted rubber blades. The blades are independently suspended. The Rossö double cutter plough has a rigid mouldboard (standard), but is also available with hydraulically adjustable ribs.

Plough hitchesPlough hitch VV-95Plough hitch VV-95 is the standard hitch fitting for

mounting ploughs onto trucks. The hitch is fitted to trucks by means of a frame hitch. The vehicle-specific frame hitch is bolted on to the vehicle’s frame. The VV-95 is modular, which provides many variants for different hitches and needs, both now and in the future. Locking of the VV-95 and plough is hydraulic. The lock is operated by means of a hand pump or hydraulics from the vehicle via a switching valve.

Parallelogram PLG 3-05 enables ploughs for loaders also to be used on trucks. PLG 3-05 is equipped with a hitch for the VV-95 for trucks and is an adapter for the large BM-hitch. PLG 3-05 “tilts the plough” on raising, which enables a higher lift height at the same time as the centre of grav-ity comes closer to the vehicle. The upper stay is adjustable for exact adaptation to the plough. All moving parts have lubrication points. Mechanical/manual locking between plough and PLG 3-05.

Snow guardsA snow guard-fitted Rossö plough simplifies snow clearance very effectively. When passing a road crossing, for example, the snow guard is lowered towards the road surface and prevents undesired snow strands. After passing the crossing the snow guard returns to its recessed position and the snow mass is ejected. In its recessed position the snow guard is behind the plough and does not represent an obstacle to ploughing near a wall or other object. The snow guard is versatile and hinged towards the road surface.

INNOVATIVE PLOUGH HITCH FOR THE PLOUGHING OF THE FUTURE

NEW

It is an EU requirement that all three-axle trucks

sold after 1 November 2015 must have radar in

front to warn of collision. This radar is an impor-

tant part of the AEBS emergency braking system.

This has meant new challenges for us at Mählers, because the present hitch systems, VV95, Norway plate and DIN plate, obscure the radar function, which must therefore be deactivated when the plough hitch is mounted.

Through a close collaboration with Volvo and Scania, Mählers has developed a unique “radar hitch”. It is designed to ensure that the radar is not obscured when the plough is unhitched. The hitch system was previously fixed to the vehicle, but this has now been moved to the plough, which means there is nothing to obscure the radar. When you unhitch the plough equipment and use the vehicle for another purpose, the radar works as intended.

When the plough equipment is fitted, there are just two hydraulic connections, plus one for the electrics to be connected between vehicle and plough. Everything else has been moved and is already attached to the plough.

The system is being test-run during winter 2015/2016 on the commonest Scania and Volvo models - very successfully!

Side plough 45-B is a new and updated version of the best-selling side plough that now ejects the snow both higher and further.

Mählers SP18 – for maximum clearing width. The constantly rising number of motorways and link roads increases the need for fast, effective snow clearance.

Mählers SP18 extends a truck’s clearance width considerably, and its newly developed design with plastic in the mouldboard allows the side plough to run easily and eject the snow well.

The SP18 frame and chassis are dimensioned to cope with many years’ use. It also provides for a stable side plough that makes it easier for the driver to maintain a steady, straight course.

The cutter hole patterns are standard and those used by most cutters on the market; both steel and rubber can be used on the SP18.

Side plough hitch Flex simplifies side plough mounting and provides increased space for a mounted scraper blade. Plough connection is through a ball cup or quick-locking ball. The hydraulic socket must be fitted with a yield position. Air is connected from the vehicle’s ordinary air system via check and safety valves. This is to provide a constant pressure of the side plough against the road surface. The hitch is supplied complete with a fitting kit.

US-84 is a combined sliding bar and rear under-ride protection. Grader blades

The greatest advantages of our new upgraded grader blade are its smaller installation dimensions and higher ground clearance in the transportation position. It is easier to fit, reducing installation time. It is also easier to attach, making assembly faster. The HB3N is fixed and the HB5N is rotatable.

HB3N | HB5N

The Mählers MC2 control system can be combined for both grader blades and ploughs. Most of its functions are controlled using a joystick.

The system is expandable and can control existing equipment. All equipment is now operated from the new control unit.

This control system is compliant with safety standard EN 13849-1, effective from 1 January 2012. For safety reasons, a PVG valve or an ON/OFF valve must be installed on the system downstream of the hydraulic package so that the system is depressurised when no function is being used.

Driving a snow plough often involves long days and then it is essential to have an ergonomically designed driver's position.

The Mählers armrest is adapted for the MC2 control system and is available in two versions; one with a display holder and one without, and has been designed to reduce the risk of RSI (repetitive strain injury), which can easily arise due to static and unnatural stresses.

The armrest is fastened to a sturdy holder and is adjustable with several joints to suit the requirements of all drivers.

The display holder is also adjustable to give the best overview.

SVH-4 side plough for graders offering a versatile snow clearance combination like no other. The grader with its hydraulic side plough is especially versatile and efficient in built-up areas:

Parked cars and other obstacles don’t present a major problem as the snow plough can be easily and instantly turned in/out in order to pass. The side plough can be raised, lowered, turned in/out and be angled upwards/downwards. The SVH-4 side plough consists of plough blade, frame with parallelogram, hydraulic cylinders with connection hoses. Safety valve in the event of colliding with an obstacle. Support legs are included to facilitate connection and disconnection.

Mählers snow and gravel guard increases signifi-cantly the range of use of the grader.

When clearing snow at road crossings and entrances the snow/gravel guard is lowered, sub-sequently avoiding a duplication of work with snow strands and unnecessary repetition. For gravel grading the driver can “carry” the material to where it is needed and it doesn’t “spill” away from the grader blade causing unnecessary material waste.

The mechanical spring loading means that the snow/gravel guard raises if an obstacle is hit.

In other words a simple, practical and economic accessory. NB! Double-action hydraulic function is required.

The trenching wing’s angle, in relation to the grad-er blade, is hydraulically adjusted from the driver’s position. Heavy-duty trenching wing joint. Quick hitch connection and disconnection. The 08–1000-1 gravel spreader (with camber function)

Mählers gravel spreader is a tried and tested product for road graders and makes the gravel spreading work more effective.

The spreaders have a hydraulic lift with spring-loaded operating position and side extension of the blade. The attachments of the tension flange are extra reinforced with bushinged joints for minimal maintenance.

The 08-1000 is fitted with a fixed blade and the 08-1000-1 is jointed to be able to camber the road.
