Ladner's Landing

In 1858 William and Thomas Ladner saw ci,e delta lands of the Fraser River on their way upriver to the Cariboo gold rush; they larer returned to homestead the ferrile lands here. In 1882, the Brirish America Cannery, the first salmon cannery in Canoe Pass, opened at the mouth of the Fraser River, followed by several others in the next few years. Ladner's Landing developed as the main population centre of the municipaliry, and eventually grew imo the Ladner town centre thar we know today.

Delta Waterworks

Attachment B Page 5 of 8

The original Delta Waterworks was constructed in 1910-191 Ion 180 acres ofland purchased by COlmcil for $13,500. It consisted of 50 miles of wood plank pipes bound together by heavy wire. Nine miles of this pipe we're the 12 inch main that ran to River Road, along the Fraser and across Crescent Island to Ladner. Smaller lines branched off Trunk Road from East Delta to West of Ladner. Pure spring water bubbled up through white sand and was collected in a holding well that gave a gravity feed of ten feet elevation wltil the reservoir of a million to a million and a half gallon capacity was constructed and filled. Upon completion of the reservoir and electric pump system the head of water was 220 feet, and provided 80 to 90 pounds pressure at Ladner. The chief engineer and designer of the system was Colonel E.T. Tracy ofYancouver, and he estimated providing 10,000 people with 50 gallons of water per day. This was the water supply for the diked flatlands of Delta. North Delta had' to still rely upon numerous local springs or wells. By the mid 1940' s cast iron pipes had replaced most of tlle system, though the watershed springs were still the water source for tlle system. In the April 16, 1910 Delta Times it was reported that the following tenders for materials had been accepted by Reeve Hutcherson and Council:

50 miles of wooden pipe [Pacific Coast Pipe Company] Electric pump of 350 gals, per minute [H. W. HW1t] And ... tenders for hydrants, valves and special castings

'GRAND V1EW FARM' WOODS RESIDENCE & BARN

2675 64 Street H01lse and bam 1905

I n 1903 this 160 acre property was sold by the

B.C. Land & Investment Company to David Woods, who built the house and barn two years later. The Woods moved to Vancouver in J 907, and the farm was rented initially to Mr. and Mrs. S.T. Holbrook and family, who had moved here

from Alberta. In a recent rehabilitation, the original house was substantially altered with large additions to the south and rear, changing it from an asymmetrical pioneer form to a symmetrical Foursquare design; the full open front verandah was a new addition. The projecting semi-octagonal bay to the north side is original. The grassed yard has mature deciduous trees, and the hpuse is part of a farm compound with accompanyi~g barn. The barn has an "L" shaped plan and gable roof, with unpainted board and barren siding and galvanized sheet metal roof cladding.

Ladner Harbour Park was Art

Swensen's dream. In 1958 he

envisioned a family park on the

island opposite downtown

Ladner. Art served three terms

as Chair of the Delta Centennial

Committee and, in 1971, finally

convinced the committee to

support the development of

the park. Ladner Harbour Park

is located on old dredging

spoils. Art Swenson took

pleasure in noting that

"every time the river

channel is dredged the

park gets bigger."
