For each topic (in bold), each bullet point must have a picture (except formulas). At the end of your time, take a picture of the topic you drew AND all the others (visit other groups!) to help you study for your next test. 1. Directions: Your group must choose TWO of the following topics to graphic design on your lab table using chalk. For each topic (in bold), each bullet point must have a picture (except formulas). At the end of your time, take a picture of the topic you drew AND all the others (visit other groups!) to help you study for your next test.

1. Stratospheric Ozone Depletion

● Normal Ozone formation in the stratosphere: O2 + O → O3

then O3 + UV → O2 + O

then repeated.

● Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs) from refrigerators, aerosol cans and air conditioners rise to the

stratosphere.

● The chlorine atom in CFCs rob an Oxygen atom from ozone molecule. CCl3F + UV → CCl2F + CL

then Cl + O3 → ClO + O2 ● Forms over Antarctic, because of ice crystals in the atmosphere which promote Cl atoms robbing

O atoms from Ozone.

● Worst in the Antarctic Spring (September) due to a build-up of ice during winter.

● Montreal Protocol (International Treaty) banned CFCs

● More UV hitting the Earth increases skin cancer, causes crop damage and reduces the

productivity of the ocean’s plankton.

2. Acid Deposition

● Burning of coal (mostly power plants for electricity) releases SO2 and the burning of petroleum

(from transportation) releases NO2. These combine with water in the atmosphere to create acid

rain.

● 2SO2 + O2 → 2SO3 then SO3 + H2O → H2SO4 (sulfuric acid)—the biggest culprit of acid rain

● 3NO2 + H2O → 2 HNO3 (Nitric Acid) + NO

● Acid Rain clouds blow north to Canada which makes the Canadians angry, eh.

● Acid rain dissolves marble and limestone which can eat away at tombstones, statues and

buildings.

● Acid rain causes environmental problems by changing soil chemistry and elevating aluminum in

the soil hindering water and nutrient uptake by plants.

● Lakes become more acidic which hurts the organisms in the lakes and crops are damaged.

● Prevention methods include electricity conservation (turning off lights, Energy Star appliances

etc.) and alternative fuel/high mpg/electric cars and transportation.

● Remediation of acidic soils may include applying lime (calcium carbonate), a base that reacts to

neutralize the acid.

3. Tropospheric Ozone Formation

● Tropospheric ozone formation begins with the burning of petroleum oil which releases NOx out

of the exhaust pipe.

● Volatile organic carbons which come from cars, solvents, vegetation, scented products also

contribute to the formation of ozone.

● NO2 + sunlight → NO + O

● O + O2 → O3 ● Then, it cycles back: NO + O3 → NO2 + O2 ● VOCs can speed up the reaction: NOx + VOCs + sunlight → O3

● Ozone is much worse in the summer due to sunlight driving the reaction.

● Breathing ozone can trigger a variety of health problems including chest pain, coughing, throat

irritation, and congestion. It can worsen bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. Ground level

ozone also can reduce lung function and inflame the linings of the lungs. Repeated exposure

may permanently scar lung tissue.

● Ozone interferes with the ability of sensitive plants to produce and store food and harms their

appearance.

● Ways to prevent Ozone: Ride a bike, walk, carpool, hybrid/electric/high mpg vehicle.
