atkinsons brochure 2015
TRANSCRIPT
In the early Spring of 1799, James Atkinson, an enterprising young gentleman from the wilds of
Cumberland, set forth by carriage for the glorious city of London. In his suit pocket were recipes for fine scents and toiletries of his own devising. Next to him sat a sizeable quantity of rose-scented bear grease balm. Next to the balm sat a growly bear.
5
The growly bear wasthoroughly devoted to James.
Within mere days the utterly fantastic balm became indispensable to London’s most uppity
crust, who braved the bear at the door of 44 Gerrard Street (“that marvellous perfume shop
with the most terrifying bear”) to procure sufficient stock for the Social Season.

Atkinsons’greatest devotee inRegency England
was thatfabulous arbiter
of all things elegant,Beau Brummel,
First Dandyof the Realm.
In 1800, James Atkinson hit upon his most startling creation to date, a fearlessly English Eau de Cologne totally different from the Italianate
colognes then in vogue. Curiously fresh yet warm and spicy, the new Eau de Cologne was stronger
and more prepossessing than its continental cousins, with a lingering trail that conjured forth the confident attributes of the British Empire.
It and all things Atkinsons became such a sensation with the royal ranks that when King George IV caught a whiff of it at Buckingham in 1826, he proclaimed Atkinsons the Official
Perfumer to the Royal Court of England on the spot. From then on the sweet smell of Atkinsons’ success wafted throughout the realm, emanating most deliciously, in 1832, from its utterly fantastic
new headquarters at 24 Old Bond Street.
7
Lesser luminaries—Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington, Admiral Nelson, Lady
Hamilton, Prince Tomasi Di Lampedusa, Queen Margherita di Savoia, and the Tsarina of Russia—also
clamoured after Atkinsons’ customised bouquets. Soon, all of society was hot for the house’s instantly
recognisable, off-the-peg creations. To meet demand, new shops were opened abroad—in Paris, the
Americas and Australia. The Atkinsons inventory was positively bursting with new fragrances.
White Rose. English Lavender. Royal Briar. The British Bouquet. The Odd Fellow’s Bouquet….
Then as now, and quite unlike anything anyone has sniffed before or since, each is
unconventionally powerful, and unexpectedly vigorous and enduring. They are, we dare say,
the very essence of English Fragrance.
9
After a most delightful hibernation,Atkinsons and its growly bear have awoken from
their slumber totally refreshed and revived. Drawing on 200 years of English eccentricity, style and impeccable manners, not to mention
an incomparable heritage and imperishable commitment to making the highest echelons of society as fragrant and delectable as humanly
possible, we are now ready to usher in a new century of perfume snobbery. How? By means of our newest collections, our boldest and most irresistible to date.
“True style,” as Beau Brummel once said,“never goes out of fashion. You simply
cannot keep a good bear down.”
HISTORY
ATKINSONS REBORN
A cracking good fragrance that very much lives up to its fabled address, 24 Old Bond Street is more representative of the house’s inestimable peerage
than any heraldic crest or coat of arms.A revelation of endlessly effortless chic and classic British flair, the cologne and bath collection tipsits top hat to Atkinsons’ first fragrance creation,
the exceedingly English Eau de Cologne of 1800. Like its predecessor, 24 Old Bond Street is
no mere Continental cologne but a powerfully assertive and peculiarly wonderful English scent.
With a glamorous twist of Brit eccentricity, it redefines the very notion of cologne, and will beguile
boys and girls of the very highest discernment.

cologne of tremendous personality. Its devastatingly aromatic cocktail of juniper,
rose and black tea is deepened with a gorgeously eccentric note of smoky, oak casked whisky.

THE LEGENDARY COLLECTION
The British BouquetAn olfactory ode to dandyism, The British Bouquetis to be worn like the finest suit of bespoke tailoring,
with Beau Brummel confidence and panache.
For ladies and dandies, a veritable mist of the Isles inspired by Beau Brummel, intrepid pioneer ofthe 3-piece suit, and the model of the man who
was born with a wise-crack on his lips andan eye for knock-out sartorial elegance.
Woven from velvety lavender, myrtle and malt, and lined with gilded citrus top notes of bitter
orange and caviar lemon, The British Bouquetis impeccably finished with a leather accord that recalls the champagne-polished Hessian boots
of the Dandy himself.
The Odd Fellow’s BouquetThe grand return of Lawrence of Arabia to the fireside
luxuries of London’s most storied gentleman’s club.
Lawrence of Arabia ensconced in the splendour and leather Chesterfielded comfort of a St. James
gentleman’s club, its weighty silence broken only by the occasional turning of a sheet of a newspaper, and the Oriental fragrance of Ottoman tobacco
issuing from the depths of fearsomely upholstered winged armchairs. This rarified ambiance is
conveyed with almondy heliotrope flowers anddark tobacco, heightened with ginger and fiery peppercorn and, finally, deepened with a rich
ambery accord of benzoin and labdanum.A fragrance of immense leisure.

her beloved Albert. Hearkening back to a time when flowers, steeped in meaning, spoke volumes...
A fragrance of royal romance, a retro contemporary interpretation of Queen Victoria’s bridal bouquet: the green and white loveliness of Lily of the Valley, violet leaves and exquisite myrtle flowers enhanced
with delicate white musk and sandalwood. For women who wouldn’t dream of
settling for less than a prince.
Fashion DecreeA languorous scent redolent of a cargo of
Asian silk brocades steamship-bound for London, carefully packed in patchouli leaves.
A mesmerising re-creation of the fragrancethat seduced the most dazzling fashionistas of the late 19th-century, among them, Sarah Bernhardt.
Fashion Decree summons up a time whenprecious silk brocades, arriving from the Far Eastin trunks packed with patchouli leaves, were all
the rage at the court of Queen Victoria. An opulent patchouli perfume of far-flung origins.

THE LEGENDARY COLLECTION
Love in IdlenessA neo-Victorian love philter for those who believe in the magic of fragrance.
Ahhh… the ethereal innocence of the violet flower, touched by Cupid’s arrow, and transformed into a spell-bindingly sensual love potion.
Out of Shakespeare’s love elixir, Atkinsons has conjured a shimmering, powdery violet cloud
of a fragrance. As gorgeous and indolent as a midsummer night’s dream, Love in Idleness is
the fragrance of love at first sight –a perfumed tryst between an intensely feminine orris-violet accord
and a seductive woody chypre dry down.
Amber EmpireAn extremely Oriental fragrance which transports
you on an utterly sensual voyage into the languorous, enigmatic reaches of the Far East.
It all began with a Chinese snuffbox, an exquisite Asian Art Deco objet d’art that fired
up Atkinsons’ imagination. Amber Empire became one of the first Oriental fragrances introduced
to the Western world in 1927. In its day, it was a fascinatingly foreign perfume,
“as mysterious and refined as the ageless East”. But 21st-century Amber Empire is not so much
exotic as cosmopolitan, contemporary and devilishly sensual. Carved from a precious amber accord
that is captured in slowly rising drifts of oolong tea, earthy and rich, Amber Empire is a moody,
atmospheric perfume, vaporous and lingering.

The Excelsior BouquetThe Excelsior Bouquet is not merely a fragrance, it is the sensation of freedom and of immense open skies.
For modern-day adventurers who wear The Excelsior Bouquet, not even the sky’s the limit. This most intrepid of fragrances captures the exhilaration, the danger and the heroism of history’s first-ever
non-stop flight over the Atlantic, accomplished in June 1919 by Englishmen John William Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown. With its high-spirited blend of flint, sage and spices, the Excelsior Bouquet is a captivating olfactory journey. It is the experience of chilled air on
metal, the heat of the cockpit, the leathery scent of aviator jackets and the rush of adrenaline as
the airplane slowly climbs up and up.

Rose In WonderlandA rose is a rose is a rose. Or is it ?
If Alice had chanced to smell Rose in Wonderland she would have discovered a rose that by any other name would not have smelled so treacherous. Far
from the gentle, innocent garden bloom of the same name, Rose in Wonderland is an ultra-magnified
super rose that is earthy, but not of this earth.
A radiant phantasmagorical flower that grows in the green wilds, it is a dizzying hybrid of the rose’s thorny, earthy prickliness and its smooth,
luminous, deceptively innocent beauty.A rose fragrance to wear and beware.
Jasmine In TangerineThe most British of exotic Flowers
Jasmine is steeped in the floral language of love and grande passion. Just as Lord Krishna brought the jasmine tree from heaven for his beloved wife
Rukmini, Sir Thomas Milington, the noted18th Century English Physician and adventurer,
brought back the purest jasmine flower from India as an act of Love to England.
Jasmine in Tangerine is a contemporary tributeto this romantic expedition. It is a radical and cheeky
take on Jasmine that marries with a charming irreverence the exotic solar beauty of the Indian flower and the sparkling suavity of a tangerine
squeeze, a fruit delicacy exclusively enjoyed by the Royal Society in the 1800’s.

Lavender On The RocksA pure double distillation of lavender.
A stylishly sharp update of an English perennial, this is a lavender fragrance of
electric contrasts. A glacially cold lavender cocktail—shaken, not stirred—it ignites
into an aromatic white-hot fieriness that deliciously envelops the entire body.
Blended like fine spirits, this strong, icy eau de parfum radiates a gorgeously delirious
buzz, both invigorating and disorienting.
Posh On The GreenA preppy chic perfume of
sumptuously stylish sportmanship.
A sun-dappled alfresco scent for dandies and ladies created from the greenest notes in perfumery,
Posh on the Green is a freshly cut homage to the great manicured British lawns—the cricket greens,
the resplendant grass courts of Wimbledon and the glorious green of the polo fields.
Redolent of smart garden parties and long leisurely afternoons spent on summer lawns this is a woody,
green perfume of the most verdant intensity for boys and girls of elegant athletic inclination.

AN EMIRIN ENGLAND
35
Imagine, please, London, the roaring Twenties, the glittering facade of Atkinsons, and, at its legendary portal, the dashing Crown Prince Mohammed Ali Ibrahim, renowned pugilist,
sports-car driver and extravagant dandy. At his side is his most recent conquest, the Hollywood movie
star Mabel Normand, whom, alas, the Prince’s uncle, King Fuad I of Egypt, a descendent of the
“Terrible Turk” Mehmet Ali Pasha, has forbidden him to marry.
The dashing emir is carrying, hidden inside a delicately engraved wooden box in his vest pocket, the key ingredient for the perfumes he wishes the illustrious house to compose for himself and his
paramour: it is oud, the precious resin of agarwood, and the crown jewel of royal Oriental perfumery.

Revealed with an Irresistibly English Twist The exotic cynosure of the Crown Prince’s first fragrances are the heart and soul of Atkinsons’
Oud collection. So too are its distinctively English accords of Central London (to remind the Prince what a terrifically rip-roaring time he had there), Earl Grey tea (his beloved’s favourite) and, for the Prince’s own scent, leather, (to conjure forth the
smell of boxing gloves and his glories in the ring).
Sumptuously packaged, the ensuing cosmopolitan bouquets are a richly fragrant entente between
the Orient and bonny old England:Oud Save the King and Oud Save the Queen.

THE OUD COLLECTION
Oud Save The KingA Dandy concoction of Oriental
exoticism and proper British posh.
Oud Save the King is as charismatic and extravagantly elegant as the glamorous Crown
Prince who inspired it. Freshly infused earl grey bergamot and iris à la boutonnière brighten the majesty of oud, which is further exalted by the
plushness of suede and an exhilarating cortege of wood essences. A scintillating dialogue between the hieratic scents of England and the Orient,
Oud Save the King is a fragrance of supreme luxury, to be worn with straight-backed posture, stiff-upper
lip and a most regal jauntiness and insouciance.
Oud Save The QueenA Bewitching fragrance of Forbidden Love
A spirited Scheherezade of oriental charms and ever-so-English subtlety, Oud Save the Queen is as captivating as the Hollywood enchantress who inspired its creation. The beguiling aura
of oud is femininely wreathed in exquisite white petals of jasmine and orange blossom,
and intriguingly sparkled with notes of earl grey bergamot and clove.
A majestic fragrance of sublimely sovereignbeauty, destined to adorn our most incandescent
seductresses, our most precious jewels of all-consuming and rapturous love.
