What is Atkins?

• The Atkins Diet, officially called the Atkins Nutritional Approach, is a low-carbohydrate diet promoted by Robert Atkins. The purpose of the Atkins Diet is to change your eating habits to help you lose weight and keep it off. The Atkins Diet also says it's a healthy lifelong approach to eating, whether you want to lose weight, boost your energy or help improve certain health problems, such as high blood pressure or metabolic syndrome.

How does Atkins work?

• Devised by the late Dr Robert Atkins, this is a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Dr Atkins' theory is really quite simple: when you cut out carbs, your body is forced into burning its fat stores to provide it with energy; as you burn more calories when your body burns fat compared with carbohydrate, you'll lose weight more quickly; by cutting out carbs, blood sugar levels remain more stable throughout the day, and so prevent overeating.

What are net carbs?

• When you follow the Atkins Diet, you count grams of Net Carbs by looking at the information provided on the food label. Net Carbs = total carbohydrates, minus the fiber content and sugar alcohols (if in the product). The Net Carbs number reflects the grams of carbohydrate that significantly impact your blood sugar level and therefore are the only carbs you need to count when you do Atkins. Foods that are low in Net Carbs such as nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits don't have a significant impact on blood sugar and therefore are less likely to interfere with weight loss.

• Calculate Net Carbs with the information provided on a food nutrition label (or you can use the Atkins Carb Counter):

• Total Carbohydrates - Dietary Fiber - Sugar alcohol = Net carbs

Choose the right plan

• Atkins 20: Atkins 20 is the classic Atkins Diet that has been so successful for so many people over the past four decades. If you have more than 40 pounds to lose, have a waist of over 35 (women) or 40 (men), are pre- diabetic or Diabetic, this is the plan for you.

• Atkins 40:If you’ve got less than 40 pounds to lose, or you need a wider variety of food choices right from the beginning, are pregnant or breastfeeding, then the new Atkins 40 was designed just for you.
