all You Gotta Do Is Win by one: The seven points scored by Minnesota State in the victory over NMU last year marked the fewest points in a victory since Oct. 15, 1966 when the Mavericks defeated Bemidji State, 6-0.

Winning Ways: MSU's 53-7 win over Southwest Minnesota State last season secured the Maverick's 45th winning season in program history and its 11th since 1980. It also marked

Head Coach Todd HoffnerMinnesota State head football coach Todd Hoffner enters his fourth year as the field general of the Mavericks. Over the course of three seasons, Hoffner has led Minnesota State to a pair of playoff appearances (2008 and 2009) and has coached the Mavericks to a 29-12 record. In 2008, Hoffner transformed a team that finished 4-7 the year before into a team which finished 9-3, won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division, and qualified for the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in school history. Over the course of the year, the Maverick defense pitched a school-record three shutouts and the squad as a whole etched its name into 23 different top-10 lists on the school’s single-season list. The Mavericks finished the season ranked #23 in the nation, marking the third time in school history that the Mavericks were ranked at the conclusion of the season by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). In 2009, Minnesota State played to a 10-2 record and was named the NSIC South Division champions. The Mavericks qualified for their second straight NCAA appearance and hosted the first playoff game in the history of Blakeslee Stadium. Over the course of the year, MSU posted two 50-point games and scored 30 or more points in nine games. The Mavericks, who finished the year ranked #12 in the AFCA coaches poll, established a school record with 29 interceptions and finished the year ranked in the top-10 in 27 statistical categories in the school’s single-season chart. Last year, the Mavericks finished 6-5, securing the 45th winning season in program history, marking the first time since 1991-94 that MSU has recorded three straight winning seasons. For his career, Hoffner owns a 75-41 record. In three seasons, 56 Mavericks have earned All-NSIC South Division Honors under Hoffner, including 16 last season. In 2009, Hoffner – who was named the NSIC Coach of the Year – tutored the NSIC Defensive Newcomer of the Year in senior defensive lineman Junior Aumavae. During his time at Minnesota State, Hoffner has seen two players earn invitations to NFL training camps as Aumavae and offensive lineman Adrian Battles each earned invitations last year, Aumave with the Dallas Cowboys and Battles with the Minnesota Vikings. Aumauve was released from the Cowboys early in camp while Battles made it to the final cut day with the Vikings. Following his release from the Vikings, Battles signed with the Green Bay Packers as a practice squad player where he eventually went on to win a Super Bowl ring in 2011. Academics and community involvement have always been a staple in any Hoffner-coached team . During his three years at MSU, 20 Mavericks have earned Academic All-NSIC honors and four Mavericks have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District V squad with junior linebacker Ross Jirgl earning Second-Team honors in 2010. The Mavericks have also been active in the community as they have participated in youth reading programs, the Million Tree Project and helped clean-up downtown Mankato. Hoffner – who was introduced as the Maverick’s new head coach on Jan. 25, 2008 – spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons as the offensive coordinator for the University of South Dakota. While at the University of South Dakota he guided an offense that ranked eighth in NCAA Division II in rushing and ninth in total offense. Prior to his stint in Vermillion, Hoffner spent seven seasons as the head coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire (1999-2005) where he led the Blugolds to a 46-29 record. Hoffner led UWEC to a league title in 2001 and his teams were nationally ranked five consecutive years, including as high as sixth in the nation. He was an assistant coach for eight seasons at Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1991-98) prior to becoming UWEC’s head coach in 1999. A 1989 Valley City (N.D.) State grad where he was a cornerback on the football team and a 400-meter hurdler on the track team, Hoffner earned a master’s degree from North Dakota in 1991. A native of Esmond, N.D., Hoffner and his wife, Melodee, have three children (Kiaya, Brady, and Mara).

the first time since the 1992 (6-5), 1993 (10-3) and 1994 (7-4) campaigns that MSU has posted three consecutive winning seasons.

Tops, But Only For a While: Minnesota State's 57 points scored against Concordia (9/24) stood as the most in the league for the season — for about two hours — until Winona State scored 72 points in its win over Upper Iowa on Sept. 24.

In the Zone: The Mavericks have entered their opponents redzone 32 times this year and have scored in 27 (84.4 percent) of those trips for a total of 155 points. MSU has 19 touchdowns (12 rushing and seven passing) and has also kicked eight field goals inside the 20. Conversely, MSU's opponents have converted 13 of 16 trips (81.2%) to the redzone this year for 62 points. MSU's opponents have scored 11 touchdowns (eight rushing and three passing) and kicked two field goals in the redzone. In MSU's win over Northern State, the Mavericks converted all five of their opportunities inside the 20 and they converted on all eight of their trips against Concordia.

A little More Red: Nineteen of Minnesota State's 24 touchdowns this year have been scored inside the redzone.

Youthful Exuberance: Of the 89 players on the Minnesota State roster, 58 are either true freshman (34) or redshirt freshman (24). Additionally, MSU has 15 juniors, ten sophomores and seven seniors.

Nationally Speaking: Minnesota State was well represented both as a team and individually in this week's edition of the NCAA Division II National Stats Summary. As a team, MSU is fourth in pass efficiency defense (94.35 and pass defense (125.33) and is 16th in total defense. Individually, junior kicker Daniel Padilla is the only Maverick ranked in the top-20 as he sits tied for ninth in field goals made at 1.50.

Schaudt It Out: Minnesota State sophomore defensive end Chris Schaudt was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Minnesota State's 42-0 win over Minnesota, Crookston. The Slater, Iowa native set a new Minnesota State single-game record with six tackles for a loss (totaling 35 yards) in the Maverick’s win over Minnesota, Crookston. Schaudt, who finished with 10 tackles in the contest (five solo, five assisted) also recorded four sacks for a loss of 32 yards. His four sacks is the third best single-game tally in school history trailing only Grant Smith who had 4.5

sacks against Minnesota Duluth in 2007. In fact, Schaudt finished the game with more tackles for a loss than seven teams in the NSIC (UMD 6, UMC 5, BSU 5, WSU 3, NSU 0, MSUM 3 and UIU 4) and had more sacks than 11 teams and his four sacks equaled the total number of sacks for Wayne State and U-Mary.

Tough Sleddin': Under head coach Todd Hoffner the Mavericks have held opponents to 100-yards rushing or fewer in 15 games. That trend continued in MSU's 53-7 win over Southwest Minnesota State when MSU limited the Mustangs to 93 yards on 30 carries.

100-plus yard games, the most recent coming in a 142-yard effort at St. Cloud State (10/8). The last time a Maverick rushed for 100-yards in five consecutive games was in 1999 when TJ Schraufnagel rushed for 100-plus yards in the first six games of the year. Additionally, the last Maverick to record at least four 100-yard games in a season was Jake Aberg in 2009.

That's a Good Start: The Maverick's average starting position for the season has been its own 37-yardline while its opponents had to start on their own 29. In the Maverick's win over Minnesota, Crookston MSU's average field position was the 50.
