Athletics Mission Statement Penn State Abington prepares student athletes to engage with the campus’ academic and social environment through developing life long skills in leadership, sportsmanlike conduct, and athletic excellence. Our progra m’s focus is on the development of the whole person, and we place student athlete welfare as our highest priority. We promote and reinforce traditional values of honesty, integrity, commitment and hard work as the foundation of our athletics program. Amateurism

• The NCAA is committed to the ideals of amateur athletics

• Student-athletes jeopardize amateur status by:– Accepting compensation for competition in your

sport– Signing (orally or in writing) with an agent– Competing on a professional team or with

professionals– Accepting free or reduced-cost products/services– Accepting compensation for promoting a

commercial product or service

Amateurism (cont.)

• Outside competition

– You may not compete during your traditional or non-traditional season.

– Limited opportunities to compete in outside competition

Recruiting• Activities for enrolled student-athletes:-Contacts with prospective student athletes-Contacts with enrolled student athletes

• Host expectations:-What is expected of you if you are asked

to interact with an on campus recruit.

Financial Aid

• NCAA Bylaws specifically prohibit the intervention of anyone from the Athletics Department (or who has athletics interests) in the financial aid process.

Awards, Benefits and Expenses

• Student-athletes shall not receive any extra benefits not authorized by the NCAA-Pay/Employment -Fee-for-Lesson Instruction -Awards -Apparel -Support Services

Academic Expectations

• Student-athletes are expected to attend every class meeting unless competition, injury, or illness prevent such attendance.

• For classes missed as result of team

travel to competitions, students are required to make arrangements (at least a week in advance) to make up work that is missed.

• Progress Reports:– Take form to your professor to have it signed after class

– 3 times per semester

•Study Hall:• 315 Sutherland (2 hours/week)

• Each team will have their own guidelines

• Generally if you are below a 2.5 GPA you should be in study hall

• All 1st semester students

CLASS EXCUSE FORMS

• It is the responsibility of the student-athlete to clear absences with each professor. (Forms obtained online)

• Your instructors should be made aware of schedule changes immediately.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION

• You have access to priority registration. 

• You must know your scheduling needs for the next semester when you meet with your advisor, and when you schedule your classes.

Scheduling Tips

• The Advanced Search screen in the Schedule of Courses, is a way to find specific classes that will not conflict with your game and practice schedule.

Eligibility

• 10 full time semesters to complete 4 years of participation

• Eligibility contingent upon meeting minimum GPA

• Maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress

State Abington’s Code of Conduct, student-athletes are subject to the rules and regulations of the NEAC.

• Should there be questions at any time concerning these or other eligibility issues, contact the Compliance Coordinator.

Gambling• Penn State Abington strictly prohibits gambling.• Student Athletes should not:

1. Provide information to individuals involved in organized gambling activities concerning intercollegiate athletic competition.

2. Solicit a bet on any intercollegiate team.

3. Accept a bet on any team representing the institution.

4. Solicit or accept a bet on any intercollegiate competition for any item (e.g. cash, shirt, dinner) that has tangible value.

5. Participate in any gambling activity that involves intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics through a bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling.

Hazing

• Hazing will not be tolerated in conjunction with our athletic teams at Penn State Abington.

• If an athlete is in violation of “hazing” another athlete, the consequences may range from individual suspension of the privilege of participation in the athletic program for a period of time, to cancellation of an athletic schedule, depending upon the magnitude of the incident and the athlete(s) involved.

Drugs

• The possession, use, sale, or distribution of illegal drugs or nonprescription steroids by a student-athlete, manager, or cheerleader is strictly prohibited.

• Any student-athlete who tests positive for substances identified in the “NCAA Banned-Drug Classes” is subject to the sanctions described in the NCAA Manual, including the loss of eligibility for one or more seasons.

Alcohol

• A student-athlete is responsible for following all Federal, State, University, and Athletics Department guidelines pertaining to alcohol.

• Consumption of an alcoholic beverage by a student-athlete is prohibited where the student-athlete serves as a representative of Penn State Abington at an official function.

• Consumption or possession of an alcoholic beverage during an athletics road trip is prohibited.

Alcohol (Con’t)

• All students are subject to the processes, penalties, and sanctions on the part of the University when institutional violations of drug and alcohol policies occur.

• Potential Outcomes:-Mandatory counseling (with or without suspension), -Attendance at workshops or group meetings -Suspension from practices and a specified number of contests, -Dismissal from the team-Community service work

Tobacco

• As per NCAA and NEAC regulations, the use of tobacco is prohibited during both competition and practice.

• Penalties for use during these times will be strictly enforced.

Personal Conduct

• You are ultimately responsible for your actions.

• You are representing yourself, your team, and your University.

• Remember, you can not transfer out of trouble, instead make good informed decisions.

Recap

• In Division III, you are treated the same as students in the general student population.

• “Ask before you Act!”

• Your athletic experience should be an extension of your academic experience.
