UNC Asheville (8-11 Overall, 4-4 BSC) vs. Presbyterian (8-11 Overall, 5-3 BSC)

Game #20

Saturday, Jan. 24/7 p.m.

WISE Radio (1310-AM)/SportSouth TV

Justice Center/Asheville, N.C.

UNC Asheville Hosts Presbyterian on SportSouth: UNC Asheville returns home to

begin a two-game homestand when the Bulldogs host Big South Conference newcomer

Presbyterian at Justice Center. The game will be televised regionally by SportSouth. This

is the first time UNC Asheville has played the Blue Hose since the 1977-78 season when

both teams were NAIA. Presbyterian is not eligible for the upcoming Big South

Tournament but is eligible for the regular-season title. The Bulldogs are trying to break a

two-game losing streak that occurred last weekend. Asheville lost at Winthrop 87-67 last

Saturday night and fell at Coastal Carolina on Monday, 64-57. The Bulldogs host

Winthrop Wednesday night at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m.

The Series: This will be the 14th meeting between Presbyterian and UNC Asheville but

this is the first time the schools have squared off since the 1977-78 campaign. The teams

played most of their games in the 1970’s, including a District 6 Playoff game at Justice

Center in 1973 as the Bulldogs won 106-98. Asheville won both meetings in the 1977-78

season as it won 86-78 in Clinton and 75-60 at Justice Center.

A Tough Trip to South Carolina: It was a lost weekend for the Bulldogs in the state of

South Carolina last weekend as they dropped two Big South Conference games on the

road. Last Saturday, defending Big South champ Winthrop rolled to an 87-67 win over

the Dogs. Winthrop jumped out to a 14-2 lead after five minutes and the Bulldogs could

get no closer than eight points the rest of the game. UNC Asheville was led by a career-

high 23 points from freshman guard Matt Dickey. Reid Augst and John Williams

finished with 12 points each. The Bulldogs had a tough time shooting the entire night as

they shot just 35 percent (18-of-52) from the field. On Monday, Coastal Carolina held off

a determined Asheville comeback to post a 64-57 win. The Chants scored the first seven

points of the game and led 35-21 at halftime. The Bulldogs stormed back to tie the game

on three occasions but could never get the lead. Augst led Asheville with 15 points, while

Dickey finished with 12 points. Sean Smith added 11 points. Shooting was again a

problem for the Bulldogs as they shot just 36 percent (20-of-56) from the field and 28

percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc.

Mighty Matt: Freshman guard Matt Dickey has really played well for the Bulldogs in

the five games. The rookie tallied a then career-high 18 points at Gardner-Webb on Jan.

7. He then scored nine points, including the tying basket at the end of regulation at

Radford on Jan. 10. Dickey helped spark a Bulldog comeback against High Point last

week with 15 points and career-best seven rebounds. There weren’t many bright spots at

Winthrop Saturday with the exception of Dickey. The Alabama native kept Asheville

within striking distance with a career-best 23 points. He went 6-of-8 from the field, 4-of-

5 from beyond the arc and 7-of-9 at the free throw line. Dickey was named Big South

Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday for his play last week. He tallied 12

points, collected five rebounds, had three steals and three assists at Coastal Carolina.

Matt is averaging 12.1 points per game in league play and 12.9 points in the last six

games.

Eddie Gets Win #100 in Big South Play: Asheville head coach Eddie Biedenbach

became the third coach in Big South history to record 100 wins in league play when the

Bulldogs defeated High Point on Jan. 13, 61-59. He joins former Winthrop coach Gregg

Marshall and former Radford head coach Ron Bradley in that select company. Eddie

isn’t too far behind either of those coaches either and could be the winningest coach in

league play by the end of the year.

Big South Conference Coaching Victories

1. Ron Bradley (Radford) 109-47

2. Gregg Marshall (Winthrop) 104-24

3. Eddie Biedenbach (UNC Asheville) 100-76

Maybe the Youngest Team in the Nation: UNC Asheville may have the youngest roster

in college basketball. There are 17 players on the Bulldog roster with 13 of those players

either freshmen or sophomores. Eight Bulldogs are freshmen, while five players are

sophomores. Asheville has just one senior returning and that’s the lone starter back from

a year ago is Reid Augst. The three juniors on the roster have only one player with any

true playing experience in Sean Smith. The other two juniors – Jason Ridenhour &

Matt Kittrell – have limited experience. Ridenhour is a walk-on who has started this

year. Kittrell is a transfer who has not played in a year and didn’t practice the first part of

the season due to a knee injury. He is now practicing and suiting up for games but has not

gotten in a game yet.

Stephenson Honored by Big South: UNC Asheville guard Chris Stephenson has been

named the New Balance Freshman of the Week for games played Jan. 5-1. He enjoyed a

breakout week for the Bulldogs, as he helped lead Asheville to a road win at Gardner-

Webb with a then career-high 10 points, career-best six rebounds and career-best seven

assists. He led a Bulldog comeback at Radford with a career-high 14 points, plus six

rebounds, two assists and two steals in an overtime loss to the Highlanders. For the

week, Stephenson averaged 12.0 points, was 11-of-13 from the free throw line (.733) and

averaged 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals. Stephenson is the first Bulldog to be

named Freshman of the Week since Donovan Jones earned the award on Jan. 29, 2007.

Home Sweet Justice: The Bulldogs have enjoyed playing in the friendly confines of

Justice Center over the past year. UNC Asheville now has victories in 23 of its last 27

home games dating back to the 2006-07 season.

Eddie Gets His 200th: UNC Asheville head basketball coach Eddie Biedenbach picked

up his 200th career victory against Western Carolina on New Year’s Eve. Eddie has

picked up 171 of those victories as head coach at UNC Asheville and 29 were earned at

Davidson from 1979-81. He has led the Bulldog program to four Big South Conference

regular-season titles, one trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and one trip to the NIT

in 2008. Biedenbach is the only coach in Big South history to take a team to both the

NCAA and NIT post-season tournaments. Here are Eddie’s milestone wins:

Win #1: Davidson 106, Canisius 99 – Nov. 24, 1978

Win #50: UNC Asheville 84, ETSU 61 – Dec. 2, 1997

Win #100: UNC Asheville 70, Elon 57 – Feb. 18, 2001

Win #150: UNC Asheville 68, Birmingham-Southern 59 – Feb. 14, 2005

Win #200: UNC Asheville 81, Western Carolina 78 – Dec. 31, 2008

Three-Point Record Set vs. VMI: The Bulldogs set a new school record against VMI

for most three-pointers made. Asheville went 16-of-28 from long distance against the

Keydets, breaking the previous record of 14 against Winthrop set back in the 1992-93

season.

Double-Doubles vs. VMI: UNC Asheville posted two double-doubles against VMI.

Junior forward Jason Ridenhour scored a career-high 15 points and collected a career-

best 13 rebounds, while rookie guard J.P. Primm pumped in 14 points and had 13

assists. It’s the first time the Bulldogs have had two players record double-doubles in

game since an overtime victory over Buffalo last Dec. 29. In that game both John

Williams and Kenny George had double-doubles in points and rebounds.

Rallying After Halftime: The Bulldogs have done a good job making adjustments at

halftime and playing better in the second half. UNC Asheville has out-scored six of its

last seven opponents in the second half and rallied for wins against Western Carolina (12-

31), Gardner-Webb (1-7) and High Point (1-13). The Bulldogs came close to pulling out

victories at Radford (1-10) before falling in overtime and Coastal Carolina Monday night.

The Guns of Augst: It’s been a great year for senior forward Reid Augst. Reid was the

lone starter back from last year’s 23-10 team and there would be a lot of pressure to not

just score but lead a very young team. He’s done a great job at both. Augst enters

tonight’s game with a 15.6 average and scored in double figures in 16 games. Reid has

been especially good in league games with a 19.6 scoring average, fourth best in the Big

South. He’s shooting a remarkable (51-of-105) 51 percent from the field in seven BSC

games and tallied at least 20 points four different times. The Richmond, Va. native began

the season as a long shot to score 1000 career points but now that’s almost certain. He has

939 career points and needs just 61 points to become the 24th player in school history to

reach 1000 points. Augst has really been good in league games this season with a career-

best 29 points against VMI (12-6), 27 at Radford (1-10), 24 at Charleston Southern (1-3)

and 20 vs. High Point (1-13). Augst went 8-of-9 from the free throw line against the

Panthers and hit two free throws at the 23-second mark to give the Dogs the lead for

good. In addition, he is second in rebounding (4.8) and leads the club in steals (32).

UNC Asheville in League Lid-Lifters Under Eddie: UNC Asheville has always been

ready for league play since Eddie Biedenbach became the Bulldogs head coach.

Asheville is now 12-1 in the opening game of Big South Conference play since the 1996-

97 season when Biedenbach became the Bulldogs head coach. The Dogs played Liberty

on Nov. 18 and that game was the earliest ever Big South Conference opener for UNC

Asheville but once again Biedenbach has the Bulldogs ready to play as they won, 84-56.

John Williams Conducting a Great Season: Sophomore forward John Williams was

the Bulldogs super sub last year as he gave UNC Asheville some real energy off the

bench. Williams averaged six points per game a year ago, blocked 51 shots and shot 58

percent from the field. The Bulldogs need John to take his game to the next level this year

and so far so good. Williams set a career high in points on opening night with 16 points

vs. Belmont-Abbey (11-14) and followed up with 14 points against Montreat (11-16). He

had his first double-double of the year with 11 rebounds vs. Montreat. Williams has

played well recently as he was a bright spot against North Carolina (11-30) with nine

rebounds and four blocked shots. He tallied 14 points against Tennessee (12-3) and then

exploded for a new career high in points against VMI (12-6) with 18. John came close to

tying his career high in points against Western Carolina (12-31) with 17 points on 6-of-9

shooting from the field and 5-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. Williams missed

two games in a row with sickness but came back in a big way vs. High Point (1-13). John

scored 14 points and was 6-of-8 from the field. All six field goals were dunks. He

collected seven rebounds and had three blocked shots. Williams is second on the team in

scoring with an 11.5 average and shooting 52 percent (74-of-142) from the field. He leads

the team in blocked shots with 33 and his 2.2 per game average is second best in the Big

South. An area that John has improved in dramatically is free throw shooting. Williams is

shooting a solid 62 percent (47-of-76) from the free throw line and that is a much better

from last year’s 43 percent (40-of-93) performance.

First Half Struggles: The Bulldogs have really been struggling in the first half for the

past month. In the past 10 games, UNC Asheville has trailed at halftime nine times. On

three different occasions, the Bulldogs were able to rally for a victory and send another

game to overtime. Asheville has really struggled in the opening half the past five games.

The Bulldogs have been outscored 37.8 to 29.4 in those five games. In the last three

games, Asheville has scored an average of just 24 points.

Ridenhour Riding to the Rescue: One of the best stories of this season for UNC

Asheville could be the play of red-shirt junior Jason Ridenhour. Ridenhour is a walk-on

from Mooresville, N.C. who is now starting for the Bulldogs at a forward spot. He tallied

a then career-best 12 points against Belmont Abbey and scored nine points vs. Montreat.

Jason pumped in eight points at North Carolina and had 10 points at Tennessee.

Ridenhour had the best game of his career against VMI as he posted his first double-

double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. He went 5-of-7 from the field and a career-best

3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The junior forward kept it up against Catawba when he

established a new career-high in points with 17 plus pulling down seven rebounds. He

then helped lead the comeback at Gardner-Webb with 12 points. Jason is one of two

Bulldogs to start in every game this season and he enters tonight’s game with a 7.3

scoring average. He’s third on the club in rebounding with a 4.4 mark.

Bulldogs Picked Ninth in Big South: The defending Big South Conference Regular

Season Co-Champ UNC Asheville Bulldogs were picked to finish ninth in the Big South

Preseason Poll announced by the conference office at its annual Media Day in October.

Winthrop who tied Asheville as Co-Champions last season and won the Tournament title

was picked to repeat as conference champions. Radford and conference newcomer

Gardner-Webb were only separated by one vote for second and third respectively. Liberty

was picked fourth, High Point fifth, and Charleston Southern sixth. VMI and Coastal

Carolina were picked ahead of Asheville with only Presbyterian picked below at 10th.

The Bulldogs hope to prove the experts wrong again this year as Eddie Biedenbach’s

team was picked to finish in fifth place last season. Asheville finished in a tie for first

place and was awarded the Big South Conference regular-season crown with two wins

over Winthrop.

Halftime Leads Have Been Safe The Past Two Years: The Bulldogs did a great job

holding on to halftime leads last season. Asheville went 18-1 a year ago when it led at

halftime. The lone defeat was the nightmarish shooting night at Radford on Feb. 20,

2008. Asheville led 35-31 at halftime but then shot a mind-boggling 14 percent in the

second half as the Highlanders rallied past the Dogs, 62-53. The Bulldogs are a perfect 5-

0 this year when leading at halftime.

First Comeback Win of the Year: UNC Asheville trailed 41-31 at halftime against

Western Carolina but rallied for the win on Dec. 31. It marked the first time this season

the Bulldogs trailed at halftime and won. The comeback win was the first by Asheville

since last season on Feb. 2 against Winthrop when the Bulldogs trailed 33-26 before

rallying for a 71-56 triumph against the Eagles. Asheville had five games last season

where it trailed at intermission and rallied for the victory.

Second Comeback Win of the Year: The Bulldogs picked up their second comeback

win of the season after trailing at halftime at Gardner-Webb (1-7). Asheville trailed 43-38

at halftime as it led Gardner-Webb shoot 59 percent from the field. The second half was a

different story as the Bulldogs rallied for an 86-76 victory. In the second half, Asheville’s

defense limited the Runnin’ Bulldogs to 27 percent shooting (9-of-33) from the field.

Third Comeback Win of the Year: UNC Asheville pulled out its most dramatic victory

of the year vs. High Point. The previous two comeback wins were impressive but in those

games the Bulldogs took the lead earlier in the second half and held on for the win. On

Tuesday night, Asheville trailed by seven with 3:50 remaining but outscored the Panthers

13-4 to pull out the victory. The Bulldogs got buckets from four different players to get

the lead and free throws from Reid Augst for the winning points.

A Game to Remember: UNC Asheville appeared on ESPN for the first time in 10 years

and made the most of its opportunity on Nov. 18 against Liberty. The Bulldogs played

the Flames in the earliest Big South Conference game ever as both teams were a part of

the network’s 24 Hours of Hoops at Justice Center. Asheville played one of its greatest

games ever as the Bulldogs doused the Flames, 84-56. The Dogs led from start to finish

and posted their biggest conference win in 10 seasons against a Liberty team that beat

Virginia on Tuesday night. Freshman guard J.P Primm dazzled the nationwide audience

with 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. He went 8-of-8 from the free throw

line. Junior guard Sean Smith tallied 17 points and was 5-of-6 from the three-point line.

He missed his first three-point attempt but knocked down his next five treys, including

four in the first half. Reid Augst had 13 points, while John Williams and Quinard

Jackson tallied 10 points each.

Eddie’s Assistants Have Done Well: UNC Asheville head coach Eddie Biedenbach has

had some good assistants during his coaching career at Davidson and UNC Asheville.

Biedenbach was the head man at Davidson for three years from 1978-81. He had a pretty

good staff when he was there as current Texas head coach Rick Barnes was there along

with current Davidson head coach Bob McKillop and Jeff Bzdelik, now the head coach

at Colorado. While at UNC Asheville, he had Monte Towe on his staff for three years.

Towe is now the Associate Head Coach at N.C. State after a solid head coaching career at

the University of New Orleans. Thomas Nash served at UNC Asheville for seven years

as an assistant coach before last spring moving to Mars Hill to become the Lions head

coach. Mars Hill is off to a great start at 9-4.

UNC Asheville Gets Third Straight Season-Opening Win: The Bulldogs won their

opening game for the third straight year on Friday night. Previous to defeating Montreat

87-72 in the lid-lifter of the 2006-07 year, UNC Asheville had lost 10 straight season

openers. However, the Bulldogs played some pretty good opponents during that time.

Eddie Biedenbach’s club lost to East Tennessee State, Syracuse, Purdue, Missouri,

Campbell, West Virginia, Michigan State, N.C. State, Texas Tech and Georgia Tech in

opening games before beating Montreat two years ago. The Bulldogs won last year’s

opening tilt by holding off Furman, 79-76.
