Monterey High School Athletics Message to Student-Athletes and their Parents

Dear student-athletes and parents, You are receiving this handbook because you have indicated a desire to participate in the interscholastic athletic program at Monterey High School. We are very pleased that you have interest in our athletic program, and we hope that your experiences will be positive as well as educational. Participation on athletics is a privilege. Athletics can give students the opportunity to learn leadership skills, foster self-confidence, self-discipline, organizational skills, decision-making skills, and encourage setting goals. We believe a comprehensive athletic program is vital for the educational development of our students. Once students have been selected to represent MHS, Home of the Toreadores, there are often many questions, which both students and their parents may have regarding our Athletic Program. We hope this booklet will be of assistance, and we encourage you to use it as a reference throughout the year. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact the Athletic Director at Monterey High School.

Monterey High School Athletics General Athletic Information

WHAT TO DO BEFORE TRYOUTS: It is your responsibility to know when tryouts will be held. All teams hold at least (3) tryout meetings. Look for flyers, listen to the bulletin, and check with your peers about tryout dates. At the tryout meetings, varsity coaches will review specific dates, times, locations, and expectations for all athletes. Contact the varsity coach if you have any questions or concerns. ATHLETIC CLEARANCE In order for a student to participate in a sport, they must first complete the Athletic Clearance Packet. This packet includes the following. Physical Form-The State of California Education code requires a physical examination for each year a student participates in a sport. Physicals are good for one year only from their examination date and must be signed and dated by the physician. MPUSD Athletic Code Form- All pages need to be read, understood and initialed by the student and parent. Our athletic program puts a high priority on scholastic achievement, positive personal attributes, and good behavior of its athletes. This code is established for all student-athletes representing Monterey High School. MPUSD Emergency Travel Card/Health Insurance Documentation Form-This yellow emergency card needs to be filled out and signed by the parent/guardian. All student athletes who wish to participate in a sport must have proof of insurance. The cost of the insurance is the responsibility of parents/guardians. If your student does not have insurance, it is available through Myers-Stevens Company. The Brochure can be obtained in the office. Students will not be allowed to participate in any sport without proof of insurance. NO EXCEPTIONS. MPUSD Bus Transportation Information Form- Monterey Peninsula Unified School District does not provide transportation to and from athletic events. It is up to the coach to provide proper transportation to and from these events. A Declaration of Parent/Volunteer Driver Form needs to be filled out in order for parents to carpool other students. If a parent wants to take their child home from an athletic event, they need to fill out the Parent Permission for Alternate Transportation Form within 48 hours of the event. These forms need to be completed and signed by both the student and parent/guardian. Voluntary Activities Participation Form- This form acknowledges the potential risk of sports injuries and gives informed consent awareness of these sports injuries. This form needs to be signed and completed by both the student and the parent/guardian. Monterey High Athletics Sustainability Fee- Athletic Sustainability Fee is $75 and allows us to support all athletics at Monterey High School. It covers our league fees, CCS fees, State fees and all referees/umpires for the entire academic year. This fee will also cover end of the season/year awards, athletic emblems and patches. Without the sustainability fee, we would not be able to support of sustain athletics at Monterey High School. ASB Activities Card- ASB Activities Card is $25 and will get you into all home athletic events for free as well as discounts to dances and other activities.

Page 7: Athletic Handbook 2013-14

Concussion Information Sheet- All student-athletes and parents need to sign and date the Concussion Information Sheet. This is a very serious brain injury that can occur during a sport and it is very important that both the student-athlete the parent are aware of the symptoms and signs of a concussion. Monterey High Athletics Sportsmanship Code- All student athletes and parents need to read, sign and date this form. This is the sportsmanship we expect out of every student-athlete and if it is not up-held, the consequences and suspensions will be pursued. Parent Transportation Certificate- This form needs to filled out and returned with the packet if any parent wishes to drive to and from an athletic event. MPUSD does not provide transportation to and from athletic events. It is the responsibility of the athlete to drive with their parent or to ride as a passenger in a vehicle driven by another parent. If any parent plans to drive to any event, with student-athletes, he/she must provide a copy of current automobile liability insurance and a copy of their driver’s license. After completing the Athletic Clearance Packet, return all signed forms to the Athletic Director along with any additional forms or paperwork. Students must complete this packet and obtain a clearance slip from the Athletic Director before trying out for a sport. The appropriate copy must be turned into the coach. NO EXCEPTIONS. IN SEASON TEAM/PARENT MEETINGS For each sport season, an Athletic Parent meeting is held so all parents understand valuable information concerning the Athletic Program as well as vital team information. Parents of those players selected are required to attend this important informational meeting. It is our hope that this meeting will be a vehicle for effective, open, and appropriate communication among the coaches, players, and parents. TEAM RULES Team rules require the athlete’s compliance with the established team rules, procedure, and instructions of the coach. Coaches have the authority to suspend and athlete temporarily for failure to comply with rules and procedures or when the athlete’s safety or safety of others requires such action. Permanent removal from a team may occur only after consultation with the Athletic Director and Principal. TEAMS AT MONTEREY HIGH SCHOOL Men’s and Women’s sports total 22 different teams. Our team level (i.e. freshmen, JV and Varsity) philosophy is outlined in the Appendix (See Squad Makeup and Squad Level Philosophy). ACADEMICS SHOULD BE THE STUDENTS TOP PRIORITY Each student must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to maintain eligibility. School-wide dates of eligibility are at the end of each quarter. Students must pass 20 units to be eligible to play sports. If a student is deemed ineligible on a date of determination, the student will be

Page 8: Athletic Handbook 2013-14

removed from the team. If a student does not achieve a 2.0 based on extenuating personal circumstances, he/she may apply for a one time Athletic Hardship (grades 10-12 only). The student will then be put on an Athletic contract which will be signed by the student and Athletic Director. An Athletic Hardship request must be submitted within 3 days from the date that the student is notified of his/her ineligibility. ATTENDANCE In order to participate in an athletic event, a student must have attended seventy-five percent of his/her classes. If a student has a medical appointment or a family emergency on the day of an event, a note of verification or signed doctor’s note must be presented to the coach and Athletic Director. A student suspended on a given day is ineligible to participate in any extra-curricular activities on that day. If s student is suspended from school, that student-athlete cannot participate in extra-curricular activities until the suspension is over. That means no practice, traveling with team or games. FAMILY VACATIONS When parents and student-athletes choose to take a family vacation during a sport season, it must be understood that the time missed by the student-athlete can affect team chemistry and personal conditioning. Student-athletes who miss practices or competitions for any reason, may have their playing time or position adjusted. Coaches shall make every effort to inform parents and student-athletes of the season’s schedule as far in advance as possible. RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS In the Event that a student needs to miss a practice or game due to observance of a religious holiday, the student-athlete will not be penalized. SCHOOL SPONSORED EVENTS When student-athletes are involved in school events such as field trips, concerts, or plays, the student-athlete will not be penalized for the time they have missed. TRANSFER STUDENTS If your son/daughter is new to the high school, and is not a 9th grader, a transfer form and proof of residence form from CCS is required and can be obtained for the Athletic Director. PRACTICES The coaches and facility availability will determine practice times. Depending on the sport, practice could be in the morning, right after school, or in the evening. No teams will practice on Sundays. Many of our teams will have Saturday practices, games and tournaments. QUITTING OR BEING REMOVED FROM A TEAM Each athlete will have a two-week period, after a previous season ends to decide if he/she wants to stay on a team. If the athlete quits after two weeks, he/she will not be allowed to participate on another team until the sport to which he/she has committed is completed or is cleared, under special circumstances by the A.D. If an athlete is removed for disciplinary

Page 9: Athletic Handbook 2013-14

reasons, the athlete may not participate in another sport until the team he or she was removed from completes its regular season. ANTI-DRUGS AND ALCOHOL RULES Our policy gives the student specific boundaries that are enforced; there is no place for drugs and alcohol in athletics. The first time a student is identified as using, selling or possessing drugs or alcohol, or caught with drug/alcohol paraphernalia, he/she will be suspended from athletics for 2 weeks (this means no practice during the 2 weeks) and will be placed into the schools Brief drug and alcohol program. Once the 2 weeks is up, they can return to practice, but they must be enrolled and complete the Brief program in the allotted time. If they are identified a second time, they are removed from any athletic participation. This includes off-campus and non-school hour use. Athletes with substance abuse problems are encouraged to talk to their coach, Athletic Director, or other school officials. Athletes who come forward for help will be given assistance and will not be subject to this rule; however, this must occur before the student-athlete is caught possessing, selling or using alcohol or other drugs. SMOKING AND CHEWING TOBACCO No student-athlete shall be smoking or using chewing tobacco while participating in sports. A (2) week suspension will be upheld for the first offense and a second offense will result in removal from the team. However, each coach may impose stronger sanctions, which may include removal from a team on the first offense. FUNDING ATHLETICS The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District has limited funding for all athletic programs. It is the coach’s responsibility to set up fundraisers for the whole athletic program to receive sufficient funds for the season. All fundraisers must be approved by ASB first. Parents, friends and family are encouraged to be involved in this process as we all know how vital fundraising is to the success of a team and season. Although Monterey High School is committed to providing a complete athletic program, we can only do so through contributions and fundraising. MBL AND THE CENTRAL COAST SECTION The Monterey Bay League, which includes (15) schools: Monterey, North County, Seaside, Watsonville, Pajaro Valley, Monte Vista Christian, Christopher, Gilroy, Palma, Salinas, North Salinas, Everett Alvarez, Alisal, Hollister and Notre Dame. Our League is divided up each year into two divisions for each sport: The A league is the MBL Gabilan Division and the B League is the MBL Pacific Division. Monterey High competes in the Central Coast Section (CCS). The CCS is the governing body of high school athletic programs from San Francisco to King City. You can learn more about the MBL and CCS at www.cif.ccs.org. NON-SCHOOL (Outside Competition Rule) A student on a high school team becomes ineligible if the student competes in a contest on an “outside” team in the same sport.

Page 10: Athletic Handbook 2013-14

MAKING THE TEAM Not everyone makes a team. High school athletics are highly competitive. Our philosophy is to keep as many students as possible on the freshmen and junior varsity levels to represent these programs. Athletes are encouraged to try-out for other sports in the same season if they get cut. Once an athlete has been cut, the student-athlete will receive their yellow emergency card back from the coach and bring it to the Athletic Director to complete the proper paperwork. Selecting teams is the sole responsibility of the coaches. PARTICIPATING ON TWO TEAMS DURING THE SAME SEASON It is Monterey High School’s basic athletic philosophy not to allow a student to participate in more than one sport in any season. Reasons behind this policy include the different demands of two sports, academic stress resulting from a student oversubscribing him or her, and the difficulty in making a full-time commitment to either sport. Any special circumstances to this philosophy must have the approval of the Athletic Director. ATHLETE’S RECOGNITION AT MONTEREY HIGH SCHOOL We recognize students on their academic achievements, as well as their on the field achievements. At the end of the season, coaches will select a few team members to receive team awards based on their academic and athletic success. These awards will be handed out at the team banquet at the end of the season. LETTERING GUIDELINES The criteria for earning a Varsity letter is a student-athlete must compete and practice in more than 50% of the games and practices during the season. This is non-negotiable and all student-athletes and coaches will follow this guideline. Letterman jackets are purchased independently with outside vendors. The Monterey High School block letter is absolute and must be obtained from the Athletic Director. TRANSPORTATION MPUSD does not provide transportation for our athletic programs. It is the coach’s responsibility to provide sufficient transportation for their teams. Coaches may arrange MHS approved carpools. Parents and athletes must have all appropriate forms and documents on file with the school administration prior to driving to and from athletic events. All carpooling will begin and end on school property. If a parent would like to take their child home from an athletic event, they need to complete a Parent Permission for Alternate Transportation Form 48 hours prior to the event. The parent, coach and Athletic Director must have a copy on file in before the athletic event.

Page 11: Athletic Handbook 2013-14

STUDENT-ATHLETE/PARENT & GUARDIAN CONCERNS To keep open lines of communication, we ask that students follow this procedure: Step 1 Athletes should discuss their concerns directly with the coach. Step 2 Athletes and parents should discuss concerns with the coach Step 3 Contact your Athletic Director with your concerns put in writing If a parent has a concern with another school or a coach from another school, bring these concerns to your Athletic Director. Do not call, email or contact other school officials at any time. Your Athletic Director will take care of any issues under the correct protocols. FAN CONDUCT Unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated during athletic events. If inappropriate behavior occurs, removal from the athletic event will be the appropriate action taken. ADMISSION PRICES All admission prices are based on league bylaws. These prices are non-negotiable and will be reduced for student-athletes with an ASB Activities Card. The MHS Athletic Department and its staff are willing to discuss concerns or problems that may arise during a sport’s season and we are willing to hear concerns by using the aforementioned procedures. Playing-time, one’s position, technical and team strategies, preparation for athletic events, as well as team selection is the sole responsibility of the coach.

Monterey High School ATHLETIC CLEARANCE INSTRUCTIONS

1. Fill out the Athletic Clearance Packet completely and legibly. Make sure the

parent/guardian dates and signs in all places requested. Both the athlete and the parent/guardian must sign, date and understand all pages of the packet before submitting the packet to the Athletic Director.

2. If you have medical insurance, provide that information on your Yellow Emergency Card

and Medical Form found in the packet. If you do not have medical insurance, you can purchase insurance through Myers-Stevens Company at Monterey High School. See Athletic Director for application and instructions. Students will not be allowed to participate in any sport without proof of insurance.

3. California Education Code requires all athletes to have a physical each year they participate in a sport. Take the schools physical form and have the doctor fill it out completely. It must be signed and dated by the physician.

4. Students must purchase an ASB Sticker before the Athletic Director can clear them to participate in a sport. This ASB Sticker is $90.00 and funds all league dues, athletic awards, cost of officials, etc. In addition, this card allows athletes to receive reduced gate fees to dances and athletic events. If your student cannot afford this card, please indicate your situation to the Athletic Director or site administrator. No student will be denied an opportunity to participate due to financial needs.

5. Make sure the student-athlete and the parent/guardian fully understand everything they have read, signed and dated in the packet. All these forms are in the athletic packet for a reason and should not be taken lightly. Once the packet is complete with all payments and GPA confirmed, return the completed packet to the Athletic Director at lunch time or after school. This packet should not be handed to a coach, left on a counter, or placed in a mail box. A student is not cleared to tryout, practice or play until the Athletic Director inspects and approves each form. Coaches are not authorized to clear students. Once the packet is inspected and approved the athlete is cleared to participate.

6. Athletic Clearances will begin a few days before each season starts and will go until a week after the season begins. We encourage each student-athlete to be prompt about getting their athletic packets completed with all the correct paperwork submitted. Clearance Packets turned in after a week into a season will not get processed in time for team tryouts. Physicals must be completed before processing. NO EXCEPTIONS.

PARENT-COACH COMMUNICATION

Both parenting and coaching are extremely difficult vocations. By establishing and understanding of each position we are better able to accept the actions of the others and provide greater benefit to the student. As parents, when your son(s) and daughter(s) become involved in our athletic programs, you have the right to understand the coach’s expectations. Communication You Should Expect From the Coach:

1. Philosophy of the coach for all levels of play 2. Expectations the coach has for your son/daughter and the team 3. Locations and times of all practices and contests 4. Transportation procedures 5. Team requirements (fees, special equipment) 6. Procedures should your son/daughter become injured during practice or a game 7. Discipline measure (missing practice or being late)

Communication Our Coaches Expect From Parents/Guardians

1. Concerns expressed directly to the coach 2. Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance 3. Specific concerns in regard to coaches philosophy and/or expectations

Appropriate Concerns to Discuss With Coaches 1. Treatment of your son/daughter 2. Ways to help your student improve and handle team membership roles 3. Concerns about the students behavior

It may be difficult to accept your child not playing as much as you had hoped. Coaches are professionals, and they make judgment decisions based on what they believe is best for all students involved, and we ask that you support their decisions. Below are areas that are left to the discretion of the coach.

1. Playing time, line-ups, player rotation 2. Team strategy 3. Play calling 4. Other student-athletes

Page 18: Athletic Handbook 2013-14

In order to keep communication open among students, parents/guardians, coaches, and administration, we ask that the following procedure be followed.

1. The student is encouraged to discuss concerns with the coach if the issue is not resolves 2. Parent/guardian must contact the coach with concerns 3. Parent/guardian, coach and student are required to meet 4. If the concern is not handled at the coach/parent/guardian level, then the

parent/guardian must put the concerns in writing and contact the Athletic Director. 5. The A.D. will meet with the coach and present parent concerns and discuss possible

solutions 6. The A.D. will set up a meeting with all parties concerned 7. If the concerns cannot be resolved at this meeting, the A.D. will take the matter to the

principal.

We are hopeful that this step-by-step procedure will help foster positive communication and promote a resolution to the issue of concern.

Allow the talented athlete the chance to excel and prepare for the collegiate level of competition

Provide athletes with the opportunities to set gals, strive to achieve them, and serve as role models for younger athletes

Strong focus on the development of team concepts and sportsmanship Selection Criteria For All Levels Physical Skills, Mental Skills, Proper Attitude, Coachability and Sport-Specific Skills Regardless of the level, each year every player must demonstrate the skills needed to be a member of the athletic program. No player is guaranteed a position simply because he/she was a part of the program the previous year.

CALIFORNIA INTERSCHOLASTIC FERDERATION STEROID POLICY As a condition of membership in the CIF, all school shall adopt policies prohibiting the use and abuse of androgenic/anabolic steroids. Page 20: Athletic Handbook 2013-14

Monterey High School Sportsmanship Policy Sportsmanship:

Monterey High School will do the following to promote sportsmanship and demonstrate

the pillars of Pursuing Victory with Honor:

-Prior to each home contest, we will greet visitors to our campus in a warm and friendly

manner

-We will let our visitors know where the locker rooms and rest room facilities are located. If a

meeting room or area is needed, we will direct our visitors to that area.

-Prior to the start of each game, we will address spectators with the expectations for good

sportsmanship on our campus.

Sportsmanship is the character displayed through athletic competition. Monterey High

will conduct each contest on our campus utilizing the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness,

Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. The Six Pillars are defined further on

the next page.

Honoring the Game

Monterey High School Athletes will compete by a code of Honoring the Game to actually

make the game better. They win graciously and lose with dignity.

The ROOTS of Honoring the Game are respect for

-Rules- don’t bend the rules to win, even if you can get away with it

-Opponents- a worthy opponent is a gift; we want to play fierce and friendly

-Officials- show respect even when we are confident they are mistaken

-Teammates- never embarrass or disrespect our teammates our coaches

Page 21: Athletic Handbook 2013-14

-Self- live up to your own standards no matter what the opponents do

Remember, Athletics is a privilege, not a right and are an extension of the classroom

Ejection Policy

One of the main goals of MHS Athletics is to always Pursue Victory with Honor. If at any

time, any student-athlete is ejected from an athletic contest, they will be not be eligible to play

for two games following that ejection. This includes all sports and even the playoffs. If any

student-athlete receives 2 or more flagrant fouls/penalties at any time, they will be ejected

from that game and the 2 games following.

We don’t ever want our emotions to get away from us and do something to make our

team and our school look bad. We want to make our team, family, friends, and community

proud of us by Honoring the Game no matter what.

This year we do not want to see any of our student-athletes ejected from any games. All teams

and athletes should make that their goal this year.

We want everyone to know that we always come to play hard while Pursuing Victory with

Honor.

GO DORES!!!!!!!
