LIZ DRISCOLLAthletic DirectorPE Department Chair

Liz has worked at Marymount High School, Los Angeles since 1987. She was born and educated in England where she graduated from college in Liverpool and then taught and coached at a coed high school in London for two years be-fore leaving England for a life and career overseas. Liz’s first move was to Athens, Greece where she worked, first in an English school and then in an American high school, teaching physical education and coaching track. After Greece, Liz taught for three years in an American junior high school in Saudi Arabia where she coached volleyball, softball and cheerleading. It was during this time that Liz first met Sr. Therese McGrody. This encounter marked the commencement of a long and cherished relationship between Liz and the Sisters of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary and the Marymount schools. As a result of meet-ing Sr. Therese, Liz was offered and accepted the Athletic Director position at Marymount International School in Rome Italy where she continued to coach volleyball, tennis and track. Liz remained in Italy for five years before moving to California and accepting a position at Marymount High School in Los Angeles in 1987.

DAWN REGANAssistant Athletic Director

Dawn grew up in San Clemente, California and graduated from San Clemente High school. She went on to attend college at UCLA where she was a scholarship athlete, rowing for the Bruins. She graduated from the school of Letters and Science at UCLA with a degree in psychology and a minor in women’s studies. Seeking to diversify her own experiences, she traveled across country to row with the U.S. National Team Development camp in Philadel-phia where she soon began her first coaching experience for the University of Pennsylvania. Returning to UCLA in 2005 and once again donning the blue and gold, she helped her alma mater to victory as an assistant coach. During her tenure at UCLA, Dawn not only expanded the team’s high school recruitment program and helped to increase walk on recruitment, she also earned her Masters degree in Management with an emphasis in Sport from the Univer-sity of San Francisco. As part of her love for finding the next challenge, Dawn left UCLA in 2008 to assume the position of Head Coach and Coordinator of Rowing for Loyola Mary-mount University. For the next three years she oversaw the University’s men’s and women’s rowing programs, rounding out over a decade of experience as a Division I coach in NCAA sports. Because of her extensive experience in college athletics as both an elite athlete and a coach, Dawn went on to create her company Inspire & Co., a recruiting organization that helps young men and women with the recruiting process and preparing for college athletics. With this knowledge, Dawn hopes to help the Marymount student athletes move forward with the skills needed to become successful students and athletes at their respected college.

STACEY ENOCHAssistant to the Athletic Director

Stacey grew up in Calabasas, California. She graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2010 with a degree in the History of Art and Visual Culture. There she established her routes in web design and all things visual. These skills will assist her in keeping up with all things athletic in order to make each season smooth and successful. Stacey is looking forward to being a part of the Athletic Department and the whole Marymount family.

MARY CATHERINE HOLCOMBAthletic Publicity/Web Coordinator

After two years in her hometown of Morgan City, La. as a news and sports newspaper reporter and freelance television journalist, Mary Catherine moved to Los Angeles to pursue other opportunities. Once here, she landed a stint as a Los Angeles Clippers Team Writer which was prior to her time as a Nike Field Reporter Correspondent. She also produced a health and fitness blog for the Los Angeles Times-Community News. Prior to her position as the Web Coordinator/Athletic Publicity for MHS, Holcomb was a re-porter for the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. In addition to being a group fitness instructor adn personal trainer, she is also the co-founder of Jewels and Jerseys - a site dedicated to empowering women to embrace sports and a healthy lifestyle.

Jennifer Schassler joined the Physical Education Department at Marymount High School in 2008 after relocating to California from New York. She graduated from Hofstra Uni-versity, NY with a Masters of Science in Physical Education. She received her B.A. from the University at Albany, NY where she played Division I soccer. Ms. Schassler had many athletic accomplishments including 2 New York State soccer championships and ranked # 1 in the nation for high school soccer. Ms. Schassler strives to enhance student learning and development in all domains of learning, being and doing. Her focus is to promote lifelong fitness and wellness for all!

COACH BIOS

JELANI BANDELEHead Coach, Softball

Coach Jelani Bandele (Coach J) joined the Marymount softball coaching staff in the spring of 2012. He started his high school coaching career in 1996. Prior to coming to Mary-mount, Coach J has coached at Shalhevet, Windward, LACES, Overland HS (in Colorado), Beverly Hills HS, and Los Angeles HS. He is currently the girls’ varsity basketball assistant at Brentwood school. His aggressive defensive system helped Brentwood reach the 2012 CIF SS 4A Championship.With an educational background in kinesiology (the study of hu-man movement), Coach J focuses on strength and conditioning in addition to athletic skill development. Coach J and his wife Aasiya Bandele have been married 15 years and have 2 children, Zaria (12) and Kai (7).

NICOLE BARKERCo-Head Coach, Water Polo

Nicole Barker was raised in Orange County. She started competitively swimming at 8 and playing water polo at 12. She went to Huntington Beach High School and just graduated from UCLA in the spring with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She loves the sport of water polo because there is never a dull moment while playing, regardless of what level it’s at. She’s excited to head the water polo team this year!

LASAN DARBOEHead Coach, Varsity TrackHead Coach, Cross CountryHead JV Soccer Coach

Lasan hails from Gambia, West Africa and is well known in local, national, and interna-tional soccer and track & field circles. He has competed professionally in both track & field and soccer. In 1988, he competed in the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea repre-senting Gambia in both the 100M and 4X100M relay.Lasan joined the Marymount coaching staff in 1996 as assistant track coach. He is the head coach of the team playing in the Coastal League of Southern California and the Los Angeles Jazz, a semi-professional team that plays in the Super-Metro League. In addition, he is the Head Coach of the Hi-Speed Track Club and the author of two books of poetry and 1 children’s book; all published in the USA.

COLIN DAYVarsity Tennis Coach

Colin Day is originally from Denver Colorado where he was a nationally ranked junior tennis player, two time high school state tennis champion and four time high school state finalist. He played Division I tennis at the University of Denver where the team was ranked in the top 30 in the nation. Also he has coached varsity tennis in three different high schools, boys and girls, as well as teaching tennis at tennis clubs during and after his playing days. Colin moved out to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the entertainment in-dustry where he is currently producing and acting in numerous projects and he is excited to start a new chapter of coaching with Marymount High school.

SEAN FALLOWFIELD Head Coach, JV Volleyball

Sean Fallowfield is thrilled to join the Marymount Volleyball family this year. As well as coaching at Marymount, Sean currently coaches at MB Surf volleyball Club and will be entering his 2nd season at Loyola High School as a Varsity Assistant to the boys program. As a player, Sean has posted the following accolades: 1981 CIF Finalist at San Clemente High School, Santa Barbara City College 1st Team ALL League, Santa Barbara Commu-nity College Player of the Year, League and State Tournament Most Valuable Player, All League and All American Honors at UCSB, 1983 Member of Junior National team and trained at Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, AVP player from 1984-1996 – Career Best 2nd Place, and a 2 TIME FIVB Finalist.

PEDRO GARCIAAssistant Coach, Varsity Softball

Coach Pedro Garcia is a 1991 graduate of Venice High School. In high school, he played baseball. He has been coaching for over 12 years. He brings with him a vast array of coaching experience from youth to the high school level. Coach Garcia knows what it takes to prepare athletes for competition. This is combined with a strong understanding of the fundamentals and always being a student of the game to provide the highest level of coaching. Coach Garcia has worked along side with new head softball Coach J for many years, including softball at Windward. Coach Pedro Garcia has been married to wife Mag-gie for 14 years. They have two daughters, Krystal and Angelynne.

TONY GREENHead Coach, SoccerPlant Facilities & Maintenance

Tony has been involved in the sport of soccer most of his life. He is a certified national coach with his “B” license in the US Soccer Federation. Tony played professional soccer for 4 years in the United Kingdom and played 10 years semi-pro in the United States. He then coached an additional three years in the semi-pro league. Tony joined the athletic Department in 1991 and has coached Marymount to 15 league championships and has participated in CIF Playoffs for each of those years. In 1995, he was named Coach of the Year when he led Mary-mount to the CIF Division IV Championship. On his spare time, Tony enjoys traveling and playing golf.

JOHN HAYDEL, Jr.Assistant Coach, Varsity Basketball

John Haydel, Jr. joined Marymount Basketball in 2010. Mr. Haydel has been an educator for over 37 years, is a retired secondary school principal and has coached boys and girls basket-ball for 13 years. His boys’ basketball teams at Dorsey High School in Los Angeles won the 1976 4A City Championship and many tournaments. Mr. Haydel was selected as the Los Angeles Times 4A Coach of the Year. His junior varsity girls teams at Westchester High School finished 3rd for two consecutive years among the over 100 schools in the district. Mr. Haydel’s last coaching assignment was assistant girls’ varsity coach at Fairfax High School. In addition to coaching, Mr. Haydel has served on the Los Angeles Unified School District Interscholastic Athletics Committee. Mr. Haydel is married, has two adult daughters and two grandsons.

CHARLES HUTCHISONHead Coach, JV Tennis

Charles Hutchison has been teaching tennis for over thirty years in the Los Angeles Area. He was a student at the Los Angeles City College in the 70’s. In 2001 Charles was a tennis in-structor at Mt. Saint Mary’s High School same year. During his pastime, Charles enjoys work-ing out the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.

THOMAS IANNONEHead Coach, V/JV Swimming

Tom has recently relocated to the West Coast after being born, raised, and schooled in New York and living in Washington, DC. He began his swimming career at the age of eight and continued to compete for twelve years, achieving success at the YMCA State, High School, and Junior Olympic levels. Tom has been involved with the swimming world for over twenty years and has worked with all levels of abilities. Prior to moving to Los Angeles, he worked as Head Swim Coach for Sidwell Friends School, an elite, private school in Washington, DC. During his six years there, he led the high school girl’s team to three Independent School League titles and two runner-up finishes at the Metro Champi-onships (over 70 teams competed).

ROBERT KELLYStrength and Conditioning Coach Assistant, Varsity Volleyball

Robert was born in Los Angeles and is a graduate of University of Oregon, and UCLA Law School. He was very active in youth sports in Malibu coaching football, baseball, basket-ball and wrestling. His Pony League team won the West Region of southern California in 1994. Robert has worked for many years with one of the foremost fitness experts in the field, a fitness trainer who trains NFL and National Hockey League players. Robert has been involved with fitness training for over 30 years.

JANE KIMAsst. Coach, Varsity/JV Swimming

Jane grew up in Los Angeles and attended Sunny Hills High School, where she won four varsity letters and multiple individual CIF championships. She graduated Yale University with a B.S. in Psychology with Honors, where she was a Scholastic All-American, broke 3 Yale Swimming Records and was named to the all-Ivy team.

CARI KLEINHead Coach, Varsity Volleyball

Cari has been involved with volleyball for over 16 years and joined Marymount’s coach-ing staff in fall 1998 where under her leadership Marymount has won 4 consecutive CIF State Titles. She attended Irvine High School and was named an All-American, and California’s Most Valuable Player as a member of the State Championship team. After high school, Cari played for Pepperdine University and was awarded All-American hon-ors. Her coaching background includes stints at Malibu High School and Pepperdine University, and as a club coach for Georgia State University, Orange County VBC, and Malibu VBC. She has also been a guest speaker at many State Championship banquets.Cari has been honored numerous times for her volleyball accomplishments; however, two of her greatest achievements have occurred off the volleyball court. She is the proud mother of 2 great kids, and she thinks her husband is okay too.

KEN KNOTTAssistant Coach, Varsity Golf

Ken Knott is a former public school administrator with 35 years experience in educa-tion. A graduate of Long Beach State University and a 4 year letterman with the men’s golf team. He is currently competing in Amateur events at the local and national level. Ken has two daughters who currently attend MHS.

TUAN LEAssistant Coach, Varsity Volleyball

Tuan’s background in volleyball has been limited due to the fact that his high school did not have a boys’ team. Instead, he wrestled in high school for three years, captain of the team for two years, qualified for CIF all three years; two years as League Champion, and placed sixth in CIF his senior year. Whenever he wasn’t wrestling, he was helping the girls volleyball team as a manager and eventually assistant coach. He ended up graduat-ing from UCLA with a double major in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. With a desire to play volleyball at a college level, he ended up going to Santa Monica College for one year and played on the men’s volleyball team. Tuan is currently trying to expand his software development company, which he is a co-founder of and is coaching at Sunshine Volleyball Club.

HEATHER LOWEHead Coach, Beach Volleyball

Heather began her volleyball career very early in life. While playing at her Volleyball Club she won three gold medals and one silver medal at Junior Olympics. She was a High School standout, she earned MVP of the League and All-American honors. She played for Ichiban. Heather was then awarded a scholarship to Oregon State Univer-sity where she played all four years as an all around player. She earned Pac-10 honors and broke the school records in ‘attacks’. In 1998 Heather played professional indoor volleyball for Switzerland and from 2000 2012 she has played professional beach vol-leyball in the USA. Heather has coached all levels of beach volleyball since 2005.If you are in the Manhattan Beach area, then check out the plaque on Manhattan Beach Pier that Heather was awarded for winning the acclaimed Manhattan Beach Open Tournament.

GENKI MATONOAthletic Trainer

Genki is a Certified Athletic Trainer, certified by National Athletic Trainers Associa-tion (since August 2008). Originally from Japan, He attended high school in Saga, Ja-pan. He received his Bachelors Degree from the Weber State University in Ogden, UT, August 2008. Certified Athletic Trainers are medical care providers, who specialize in injury preention, first-aid, treatments and examination for both acute and chronic athletic injuries and illnesses, and rehabilitation. Genki joined the Marymount Ath-letic Department in January 2007.

STANFORD POONVarsity Tennis CoachTennis Elective Teacher

Stanford is originally from Honolulu, HI. He was the top tennis junior growing up there and a nationally ranked junior player. Stanford graduated from University of Arizona Business School with degree in Management Information Systems. Current-ly, Stanford is a full-time USPTA tennis professional. He has been coaching for over 18 years. He trains juniors of all ages & skill levels and also instructs adults. Stanford directs tennis camps and USTA tournaments in Los Angeles. Stanford is very excited to be a part of the Marymount family.

ERIC ONOUYEHead Coach, JV Basketball

Eric joined the Marymount Basketball staff in the fall of 2011. He has been coaching for 13 years at various levels, the past 3 years at Santa Monica HS and currently is running and coaching the youth basketball program for Santa Monica Surf. He is very excited to be join-ing the Marymount Basketball family.

JAY PERINIAssistant Coach, Varsity Volleyball

Jay is a veteran of the Navy who has been advising volleyball players for 24 years to “Quit Whining”. Jay was featured in Volleyball Magazine for his great talent for developing “heavy balls”, an effective piece of equipment used worldwide for volleyball conditioning.

EDDIE ROSENBERGHead Coach, Varsity Golf

Eddie Rosenberg: Better known as Coach Eddie to his students and athletes he has worked with over the past 26 years. Coach Eddie retired from teaching after 15 years at St. Paul the Apostle School in Westwood at the end of the 2007 school year, to start his own business. At St. Paul he was the Boys Sports Coordinator and coached a variety of sports including golf. His philosophy is to make athletics fun and maximize an individuals efforts while honoring the team and the sport.

RONALD SAMPSON Assistant Coach, Track

Ronald was born and raised on a farm in a small town in South Carolina and attended San Jose State University as a member of the football team. Ronald has BA and BS degrees from San Jose State and a Masters degree from Cal State University Northridge. Ronald has been a teacher at Mulholland Middle School since 1989. In 1991, Ronald took a leave of absence from school to serve in active duty during Desert Storm and joined Marymount’s coaching staff in 1997.

JOHN STEVENSHead Coach, Archery

John Stevens has been involved organizationally, administratively, and operationally in target archery in southern California for more than twenty years. He was past president of State Archers of California). He has also served as Chairperson for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Youth Advisory Commission for the sport of archery. Currently, John volunteers his time and expertise introducing both youth and adults to archery at Rancho Park in Cheviot Hills. In 1978, John was certified as an Instructor by the National Archery Assoc.; the group responsible for Olympic style archery in the United States. He founded the LAX-10 target archery club and has worked with students at schools such as the Mirman School, Le Lycee Francais, and the Westchester Middle School.

NEIL TALBOTHead Coach, Varsity Soccer

Neil Talbot, born in Dunfermline, Scotland, lived most of the time in Aberdeen on the North East Coast where he played soccer at various levels with his club, high school, and college teams. He lives with his wife Charlene and daughter Islay in Westchester.He has been coaching local girls’ club teams for more than 11 years and holds his National ‘D’ License. Neil has been coaching at Marymount since 2000.

MAGGIE VESSEYAssistant Coach, Track

Vessey represented the United States at the 2009 World Championships in the 800 m.While competing for Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Vessey was the Big West Conference 800 m champion twice. Vessey continued her impressive results in 2009. At the Herculis meet in Monaco, she won the race with a time of 1:57.84. At the time, this was the fastest 800 m performance for the year, and tied for the seventh fastest by an American runner. At the 2009 World Championships, Vessey finished seventh in the 800 m semifinal with a time of 2:03.55. At the 2011 World Championships, Vessey finished sixth in the 800 with a time of 1:58.50.[5]In 2011, masters runner Rose Monday became Vessey’s coach.[6] She qualified for the finals of the 800 m at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, where she finished sixth.[7] A week later, Vessey won the 800 m at the Hanžeković Memorial as part of the IAAF World Challenge Meetings.[8]At the 2012 US Olympic trials, Vessey finished eighth in 2:03.44. She in thrilled to draw on her experience and knowledge of the sport to help Mary-mount athletes.

LINDSAY WEEMSSelf-Defense

Lindsay Weems started her life as a dancer, dancing with companies such as Houston Bal-let, Atlanta Ballet, and Nashville Ballet. After undergoing two ankle surgeries, she could no longer continue with her dance career. Lindsay now teaches pilates and self defense in many different locations across Southern California. She became passionate about the need for self-defense after being attacked in her early twenties. Lindsay is now devoted to teaching and bringing awareness about personal safety, to young women all over Southern California. She is very excited to share her knowledge with the Marymount Community.

GENG WANGHead Coach, JV Water Polo

Geng Wang is from Palo Alto, California where he played water polo and swam for Palo Alto High School. He was captain of both the water polo team and swim team, and gar-nered All-American honors in swimming. He continued his water polo career playing DI at UCSB and graduated in the spring with a degree in Business Economics.
