The fgures reveal that economic growth did not translate to more jobs

and employment. Job creation is an important issue because several

social problems have been a direct or indirect atermath o prolonged

employment and unemployment o most Filipinos.

Among the top 20 senatorial candidatesin the Social Weather Station (SWS)senatorial survey released last April TeamPNoys Alan Peter Cayetano and CythiaVillar, and UNAs JV Ejercito and MigsZubiri, have job generation and addressingemployment issues as amongst if not thecentral focus of their platforms. Commonsentiments are to increase infrastructurespending, empower Small and MediumEntrepreneurs (SMEs), strengthen thesupport to the agricultural sector, andmake education responsive to marketdemands.

Claim: Only a few senatorialcandidates have acomprehensive platform thataddresses lack of jobs andunemployment.

Despite trumpeted economic gains, and getting good investment

grade status rom international credit rating agencies, the Philippines

unemployment and underemployment remains to be high.

Except forNancy Binay, the rest have eithera platform or a track record that indicatestheir commitment to job creation.

    UNAs candidates JV Ejercito, Nancy

Binay, Gregorio Honasan, ErnestoMaceda, and Mitos Magsaysay criticizedthe administration for touting the fasteconomic growth our country has beenexperiencing but while failing to addressthat the benefts do not trickle down to

    the poor.

Team PNoys Alan Peter Cayetano andRisa Hontiveros answered theese criticismsby saying that trickle-down effect takes

time, and that growth now gives us themomentum to solve poverty crisis.
