The shortlist of 30 projects has been selected from another record entry of over 300 British architecture and furniture projects in the national Wood Awards 2014 - the UK’s premier award scheme celebrating excellence in design in wood.

The Wood Awards is the flagship for wood in the best of British architecture, furniture and design. This year’s 30-strong shortlist features unique private houses, stunning small projects, outstanding restorations and impressive commercial and public buildings. The shortlist for the Furniture categories include extraordinary bespoke and production-made furniture ranging from the traditional, such as Edward Barnsley Workshop’s Scorched Oak Rocking Chair in European oak; to the contemporary, with the Ten Species Tallboy by Sebastian Cox Furniture as an unbridled celebration of British hardwoods.

The Building shortlist includes projects as diverse in size and scope as the new Middle Drawbridge at the Tower of London by GMT Timber Frame using green and air-dried oak; the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse -

the new indoor Jacobean theatre at Shakespeare’s Globe in London by McCurdy & Co using English and European oak, European redwood, whitewood and spruce; Hugh Strange’s Architecture Archive in Somerset using Stora Enso / Eurban spruce cross laminated timber with locally sourced cedar, ash and beech; The Moor Market in Sheffield by Leslie Jones Architecture with B&K Structures using Western red cedar and European spruce glulam; and the Endless Stair by dRMM Architects - a major feature of last year’s London Design Festival using new developments in cross laminated hardwood to create a unique structure from American tulipwood.

The Wood Awards independent judging panel of architecture, engineering, craftsmanship and design experts now visit the shortlisted projects in person - from the South coast to the Highlands - before making their final decision. The winners of the Wood Awards categories and the recipient of the Wood Awards Arnold Laver Gold Award for the ‘winner of winners’ will be announced on the 18th November at a reception in London hosted by the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, and the Wood Awards 2014 supplement will be published in RIBA Journal’s December issue.

The Wood Awards judging panel includes Hugh Pearman, editor of RIBA Journal, Jim Greaves of Hopkins Architects, Andrew Lawrence from Arup, David Morley, Adam Khan, architectural writer Ruth Slavid, timber engineering consultant Nathan Wheatley from Engenuiti and craft specialist John Wilkie, and the panel is supported by timber industry consultant Michael Buckley. Sean Sutcliffe of Benchmark Furniture leads the furniture judging panel of John Makepeace, Rod Wales and Katie Walker.

David Hopkins, head of communications and external affairs for Wood Awards major sponsor Wood for Good, said, “Timber is enabling truly sustainable design as urbanisation increases and natural resources decrease. The greatest challenge of our age is how to make our urban built environments truly sustainable, decarbonising the manufacture and construction of products and buildings, using materials from renewable not extractive sources.

The Wood Awards continually demonstrates the creation of spaces that have the functionality to adapt to changing conditions and the aesthetics to appeal to a savvy, globalised population. Timber is the material of sustainable modernism and design principles need not be compromised by a strong commitment to sustainability.”

The Bespoke and Production-Made furniture shortlisted Furniture categories pieces will be exhibited on the Wood Awards stand at this year’s 100% Design in September - the biggest event during the London Design Festival.

As the UK’s premier award scheme with over 40 years of supporting excellence in the world’s only naturally sustainable material, the not-for-profit competition is the flagship for wood in the best of British architecture, furniture and design.

The Wood Awards is only made possible by the major sponsorship of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the Carpenters’ Company, TRADA and Wood for Good. Other sponsors include American Softwoods, BRE and the Forestry Commission. New from 2014 is the combined sponsorship of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) with the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), and the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) as a supporter. The Wood Awards Gold Award is sponsored by Arnold Laver. For more information and regular updates, visit www.woodawards.com

Supplier of sustainable and ecological products for the construction and refurbishment industries, Eco Materials Online, has launched a new super-fast website that is both informative and easy to navigate. The website, although of course a modern concept, features a product that has very much stood the test of time and is referenced under the two main headlines on the homepage of breathable insulation and acoustic insulation. Heraklith boards are the star of the show, and are breathable thermal and acoustic insulation panels, invented by Heraklith over 100 years ago; the product having recently received massive investment from KNAUF INSULATION to ensure that the genuine Heraklith panels remain the best quality woodwool boards available. The main component is shredded wood, or ‘wood wool’, which gives the product its distinctive appearance. Previously magnesite was used to bind the wood wool, but the latest generation has been updated and now utilises cement to make them weather resistant and sufficiently durable to be used as external wall insulation; additionally offering passive fire protection for up to 90 minutes where required.Although the product has been around for a long time, it very much conforms to modern day requirements, being that the board is manufactured from PEFC certified wood. Heraklith is CE marked and conforms to European Standard for Wood Wool Insulation BS EN 13168. In addition to standard panels (which are available in 15mm, 25mm, 35mm and 50mm thicknesses), there is a variant called the “decorative panel” which uses a finer grade of woodwool (1mm instead of 1.5mm). A short description of each option is provided – for example, the 15mm boards are natural vapour permeable panels which makes them a perfect base to be used internally and externally with lime render / plaster as part of a breathable wall construction. Then the surfer is able to see the cost and order through the online ‘basket.’Eco Materials Online is a division of Marmox (UK) Ltd, but operates separately in as much that it specialises only in the supply of sustainable and ecological building materials. Hence the accessories on the site – washers and sealants – offer the reliability of the Marmox name. The new website also features links to sales advice and customer services, as well as contacts and delivery details, returns and the ability to register and login to personal accounts. www.marmox.co.uk

The Star Of The Show Goes Online

Ancon Extends Its Award-Winning Teplotie Range To Accommodate Surface Fixing

Masonry fixings specialist, ANCON, is continuing to lead the market in low thermal conductivity wall ties, with an innovative extension to its award-winning TeploTie range that sees it now suitable for surface fixing to an in-situ masonry leaf or structural frame. Like the original TeploTie cavity wall tie, the new Teplo-L-Tie comprises a pultruded basalt fibre body set in a resin matrix. This material, with its thermal conductivity of just 0.7W/mK, minimises heat loss across an insulated wall cavity. Unique to the new Ancon Teplo-L-Tie, however, is an ‘L’ shaped stainless steel upstand, mechanically and chemically bonded to one end, which allows it to be securely tied to steel, timber, concrete or masonry using a range of standard fixings. www.ancon.co.uk

Kee Klamp Celebrates 80 Years Of Safe Structures!Kee Safety, the leading supplier of roof top and ground based guardrail, is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its popular Kee Klamp fitting, the product at the heart of hundreds of thousands of safe tubular structures across the globe.

“We are delighted to reach this impressive milestone,” comments David Hill, Kee Safety’s Group Marketing Director. “From humble origins in the agricultural sector, the use of Kee Klamp fittings has evolved considerably over time. Today, the Kee Klamp fitting is a reliable mainstay in a wide variety of guardrailing, handrailing and other safe structure applications thanks to its versatility, durability and ease of use“.

The Kee Klamp fitting was originally designed in 1934 by Gascoignes Ltd, the milking machine specialists. It was created to meet a requirement for safer, more hygienic milk production, helping to create tubular-based stalls for dairy herds, quickly, easily and without the need for any welding on site. Instead, Kee Klamp fittings are installed using a standard hex key, with each product incorporating an integral set screw to lock the respective fitting safely and securely onto the tube.

From this initial success, Kee Klamp fittings soon gained wider appeal. During World War II, they were used for applications including barrage balloon wind shields and aircraft and gun turret maintenance. Post War, the Kee Klamp fitting became a common sight in racking structures, platforms, handrailing and other safety structures. Overseas expansion and the development of an international distribution network followed. The 1970’s also brought fresh directions as the fittings began to be used in home furniture and shelving, thanks to a new, attractive galvanised finish. In 1977 an independent company Kee Klamps Ltd was created and the pace of innovation and product development quickened again.

Today, Kee Klamp fittings remain a major product range within the portfolio of the Kee Safety Group, a UK based global safety company with offices in Canada, China, France, Germany, Poland, UAE and USA. The off-the-shelf product range is one of the largest on the market, providing fittings for every possible application. Alongside Kee Klamp fittings, the business also includes the aluminium corrosion-resistant Kee Lite® range and Kee Access® fittings typically used to create safety handrailing that complies with the requirements of the UK Equality Act and other tubular structure applications.

“The Kee Klamp fitting has been on quite a journey since its invention in 1934,” adds David Hill. “The reasons for its early success are still its major strengths today. Versatility, reliability, speed and ease of assembly are as important in building safe structures as they ever have been, if not more so. The Kee Klamp fitting may be 80 years old, but on this basis it remains a product with a long and very bright future ahead.” For more information on Kee Klamp fittings and the Kee Safety Group, please visit, www.keesafety.co.uk

Meet The Five Faces Who Are Growing Roto By 10% In The UK

The more globally successful a company becomes, the more it is in danger of being labelled a “faceless” organisation. However, Roto is one major player that always avoids that description. Last year the Roto Group turned over e568 million. Within the industry, they are a big worldwide brand. They have loyal customers on every continent. How do they do it?“Ultimately, it is about our people and the relationships they form with our customers,” says Ferry van Wezel, head of Marketing for Western Europe, which covers the UK along with Belgium, Netherlands and Scandinavia. “Roto is, like many big German companies, still a family business at heart.Investment in people is a big part of how we develop the business. We have an apprentice training programme, we have many employees who have service of 10, 20 years and more with the company. It gives us solid consistency while also bringing in new people and ideas. But none of that is worth anything without our customers”.In the UK, five faces deal directly with customers on a day-to-day basis. These are Roto’s regional key account managers. The longest-serving member, Terry McAuley , covers Scotland. Jacky Black manages accounts in Northern England. Daz Binning operates out of the Central region. Dave Smith covers the South East and the newest member of the team, Andy Laird, is based in the South West. Together, they bring a combination of knowledge of Roto and its products as well as experience in the wider industry.UK operational manager Paul Tracey oversees the team, and everyone is able to call on support from Roto Western Europe headquarters in Belgium. Product manager Chris Cauwenberghs provides overall technical support and is backed up by specialist help from Fred van den Broek, who is the expert for timber, aluminium and the RotoCon Orders online configuration software.Meanwhile, Ferry along with Jens van Eyseren provide marketing communication and support. So how is the UK doing and what is the next big product announcement? “So far this year, UK turnover has increased by almost 10 per cent when compared with 2013”, reports Ferry. “It’s a testament to the way the team is working. The next big product we introduce will be of interest to anyone whose customers can benefit from large folding-sliding doors that are heavier, yet smoother and more energy efficient than before. This is the Patio Fold system, which takes over from the very popular Patio 6080”. With this new hardware system, Roto are promising several new advantages. A maximum individual sash weight of 100 kg (up on the previous limit of 80 kg), an energy-efficient threshold that allows barrier free access for wheelchairs, plus ultra-quiet rollers that will also make the system even easier to operate. www.roto-frank.com and follow Roto on social media – just look up 'Roto Frank' on Twitter or Facebook.

ANCON Confirms CE Marking Compliance As New Deadline Hits The Industry

From 1st July 2014, the CE Marking of structural steelwork to BS EN 1090 becomes a legal requirement. After this date, any fabricated structural component delivered to site without a CE mark, including masonry supports and windposts, is in breach of the EU Construction Products Regulation. ANCON is proud to have offered the Industry a fully CE-compliant range since July 2013 - a full year ahead of the industry deadline. The CE Marking of Ancon’s extensive product portfolio, so far in advance of the 2014 deadline, demonstrates an established understanding of Eurocode design methodology and a long-term commitment to robust manufacturing controls. Ancon encourages the industry to understand the risks, demand the CE Mark and accept no excuses. www.ancon.co.uk

DuPont™ Tyvek® At Timber Expo 2014NEC Birmingham 7th- 8th October, Stand B33: Displaying a range of advanced membranes, systems and solutions for optimum performance and protection.

DuPont has applied its world-class know-how in materials science to the building and construction industry for over 40 years, developing a range of hi-tech products with a proven track record of superior performance. Core ethics such as safety, sustainability and service have resulted in solutions and systems that add genuine, lasting value to the built environment. A series of key solutions from the DuPont™ Tyvek® range and from other product families that are fundamental to enhancing timber frame construction will be on show at this year’s Timber Expo.

These include innovations such as DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™ an eco-friendly patented technology for greater building safety. Suitable for roofs and walls and offering extremely high levels of flame retardancy (up to Class B) DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™ further enriches the renowned properties of the advanced breather membrane, which include long-term protection, effective vapour diffusion, greater energy efficiency and improved interior comfort. When flames meet DuPont™ Tyvek® FireCurb™, they stop, die down and go out, limiting flame propagation through the external envelope. While crucially offering higher safety to occupants and fire fighters, this new product line also potentially reduces the damage and

cost caused by fires. This novel technology is also environmentally sustainable: it involves no halogens, instead a phosphorous containing agent forms a ‘char’ layer at the surface, slowing the release of flammable materials. Starved of fuel, the flame spreads over the membrane more slowly or not at all.

Also on show at Timber Expo, a selection of products that work together to address challenges such as airtightness, offering a holistic approach to bridging the performance gap and meeting problems such as wind-washing. Under the umbrella of DuPont™ Tyvek® Timberframe Solutions, this offer allows producers of lightweight ventilated timber constructions to easily and confidently install superior, reliable and durable protection against the elements.

DuPont™ Tyvek® Timberframe Solutions consist of the appropriate DuPont™ Tyvek® breather membrane for each specific application, in partnership with the most suitable air & vapour control layer from DuPont, enabling the installation of integrated weather barriers and accessories, together with reduced waste and optimal production and service processes.

DuPont™ AirGuard® air & vapour control layers (AVCLs) are proven to enhance the moisture management and airtightness of timber frame buildings, helping to meet the increasingly tougher requirements of today’s regulations and contributing to energy efficiency and occupier comfort. The range includes reflective and humidity-adaptive versions that are tailored to specific conditions.

DuPont™ Tyvek® Timberframe Solutions provides building industry professionals with effective condensation control and airtightness. The result is a significant contribution to the thermal performance of the building, helping to achieve environmental goals set by the EU directive and local building codes.

Thermal safety is a vital consideration in glass façade specification which architects and designers are increasingly seeking to address, according to Mike Butterick, marketing director at façade contractor GLASSOLUTIONS.

With the priorities for glass facades most often on aesthetics, structural integrity, thermal performance and how best to deliver the most comfortable internal environment, there is one fundamental law of physics that also has to be taken into account when designing façades.

In the last 12 months, there has been a notable increase in the number of architects, engineers and specifiers seeking advice about the thermal safety of glass used in facades as they seek to prevent costly remediation work. Delivering a thermally safe glass façade means addressing the material’s natural propensity to expand with heat and contract in the cold. An unsuitable glass specification usually results in thermal fracture – a crack in the pane of the glass from the edge due to stresses induced by differing rates of expansion and contraction.

Thermal stress is a potential issue for any annealed product, especially if used in laminated, tinted and/or coated formats, which is the preference for those seeking to avoid the use of toughened glass. Whilst toughened glass is

not prone to thermal fracture, it does however require careful consideration of both its optical and break characteristics. For example, toughened glass is prone to optical distortion due to the tempering/toughening process and this can impact on the visual appeal of glass facades. The most common cause of thermal fracture in annealed glass is heat from the sun or from inside the building causing the exposed areas of the glass to expand more rapidly than the cooler, shaded areas. The perimeter of the glass which sits in the frame rebate, and/or any other areas of glass which are shaded, will never heat up as quickly, and/or to the same extent as the exposed areas.

The risk of thermal fracture increases in annealed glass where a temperature difference of between 25-40 degrees Celsius, depending on the product, occurs. But this is reduced if the glass has been poorly cut, damaged during handling, or improperly glazed.

Achieving a thermally safe solution, however, goes way beyond the type of glass used and the quality of its processing and installation. It requires a much more comprehensive review of the façade design at an early stage.

Chiefly, what is the geographical orientation of the façade? What is its pitch? Verticals are less prone to thermal fracture than horizontal, with varying degrees of impact at all angles between. And what is the type and colour of frame, and the impact of shading from other external elements?

Internal elements that reflect heat back at and/or trap heat against the glass also impact. For example, blinds, floor slabs or bulkheads, and even posters that are applied to the glass.

Failure to factor-in the risk of thermal safety and specify the right glass at the design stage, leaves building owners and facilities managers open to expensive and disruptive remediation work. This is especially the case for high-rise buildings where the cost of replacing one pane of glass could run into tens of thousands of pounds.

In fast track construction speed is the key but commonly used methods are not necessarily the most efficient or cost-effective. Should we therefore be changing our approach?

When assessing common features of fast track construction, the high thermal efficiency, airtightness and ease of installation of SIPS systems have all combined in their favour. Despite such widespread use, however, there can be a trade-off in terms of some elements of performance. Silka calcium silicate ‘big blocks’, which have been proven in the UK over the past 10 years and have a history of use in Western Europe, can provide a more economic and quicker method of construction than either SIPS or block and steel frame. Perhaps more importantly, they also offer significant technical advantages.

Calcium silicate has been in use as a construction material for more than a century, but the development of the ‘big block’ principle has given it fresh impetus. BBA-certified blocks in sizes up to 1000 mm x 645 mm make construction quick, efficient and extremely cost-effective. Steel frame and SIPS require minimal installation skill but a two-man team laying calcium silicate blocks (using a small construction crane which is moved between floors) can lay in excess of 60m2 per day, far more than a three-man team can achieve with traditional masonry. For projects such as schools, hotels, hospitals and apartment blocks this can be hugely beneficial given the tight build times involved and implications of overrun.

Silka blocks are suitable for load bearing, non-load bearing and interior leaf cavity walls, a single leaf wall 150mm thick providing an acoustic value of 50-55dB, well above regulation requirements. An unfinished 140mm 7.3N aircrete block provides a value of just 44dB (rising to 46dB with drylining

or lightweight plaster). High thermal mass enables calcium silicate to absorb heat and release it slowly, helping maintain a comfortable living environment and reducing CO2 emissions from heating, lighting and air conditioning. By contrast, timber absorbs heat too slowly to provide effective thermal mass (a fact often overlooked in favour of U-value), while steel conducts heat too rapidly to accommodate a building’s naturally variable heat flow. The comparison is similarly marked in terms of fire resistance, a SIPS system typically offering a rating of 30-60 minutes compared to 120 minutes provided by a calcium silicate block.

As part of a package of specification support, drawings for this type of construction are supplied for each individual wall showing the designated position of standard, cut and faceted blocks. Laying into a thin joint mortar, a practice commonly used in Western Europe and an intrinsic part of the large format wall system, makes the structure stronger and more airtight while reducing the critical drying out period. There is no need for pointing and invariably work can carry on in conditions which are too cold for traditional mortar. With blocks cut off-site to requirements laid down in architect’s drawings, build heights of up to 7 metres per day are not unusual.

At 25N/mm2, blocks have a high load bearing capacity, greater resistance to tensile stresses and a density of 1750-1850kg/m3. Unlike concrete blocks, which achieve their shear strength from the aggregate and cement content, calcium silicate derives its strength purely from the chemical reaction that takes place between lime and water. The finished block is water resistant but does not form a vapour barrier so accumulated moisture can diffuse slowly into the atmosphere.

Among the first UK projects to use the big block principle, Laing O’Rourke built 7 schools in North Swindon between 2005-7 for Swindon Borough Council. The £68m PFI scheme utilized 5700m3 of blocks and prompted specification for a further 14 schools in Scotland as part of Edinburgh schools PPP2 and Perth & Kinross PFI schools projects. Laing O’Rourke was supported with a continuous programme of onsite training for installers, with projects all closely monitored. The absence of companies formally approved as contractors can therefore never become an issue.

Construction from within the structure eliminates any need for scaffolding and once built, low shrinkage means walls exhibit virtually no movement. From the contractor’s point of view no manual lifting is involved while, in terms of sustainability, calcium silicate is a natural material, blocks being produced without any chemicals or toxins and with low levels of embodied energy. Ultimately, they are also fully recyclable.

DuPont™ Corian® Expands Its Offering Of Dark ColoursMade With Deepcolour™ Technology With Six New Browns

DuPont™ Corian® expands its offering of dark colours made with the company’s ground-breaking DeepColour™ Technology*, which enables the production of advanced materials for interior design and architecture delivering a superior combination of elegance, functionality and design versatility.

Following the successful launch of a selection of black colours of DuPont™ Corian® made with DeepColour™ Technology* earlier this year, DuPont has now used the technology to produce six new brown tones. Including pure hues and colours with particles, this range opens up exciting new options for kitchens, bathrooms and furniture, and offers new possibilities to architects, designers and consumers.

The development of this new group of brown tones made with DeepColour™ Technology is part of the "Endless Evolution" growth initiative implemented by the DuPont™ Corian® business. DeepColour™ Technology* (a patent pending invention, www.deepcolour.corian.com) is a highly innovative manufacturing solution from DuPont. Setting new industry standards, it has enabled the design and production of dark solid surfaces offering deeper, more intense and durable colour, improved wear performance and easier thermoforming, seaming and finishing.

The six new brown tones of DuPont™ Corian® made with DeepColour™ Technology are:Deep Bedrock - An absolutely grounded tone; the flecks of golden tan, black and ivory imply fertile soil and rich resources. Steadfast on its own, it can appear playful when coordinated with lighter solid colors.Deep Mink - Luxury with a twist, this chameleon hue of brown and green contains understated flecks that aren't immediately visible, adding to its exclusivity and desirability.Deep Sable - As the name suggests, this is a warm, sophisticated color. A deep hue that whispers at olive and hovers near brown, it hints at the depth of an ancient forest.

Deep Caviar - Dark with subtle flecks that appear to catch the light, this hue appears both delicate and opulent, like its namesake.Deep Espresso - Luscious, exclusive and rich like its namesake, this deep brown offers the depth of black with the added warmth of brown. It can be grounded, elegant and sophisticated.Deep Storm - Busy flecks of natural colours create a flurry of action in this pattern. The dark background is lifted up with the flecks to keep its base from becoming too visually heavy.

The six new brown colours of DuPont™ Corian® will be commercially available in Europe, Middle East and Africa from 15 September 2014.

“Our Endless Evolution initiative for DuPont™ Corian® continues to translate into powerful innovation. Through our DeepColour™ Technology, we introduced four new black colours in early 2014 which captured the attention of the market and achieved significant sales. Now, we have used this technology to produce six further dark colours: six brown tones of DuPont™ Corian® solid surfaces with an enhanced combination of beauty and functionality. The evolution of DuPont™ Corian® continues and will see further product and marketing innovations in the coming months, once again demonstrating our leadership in the market of modern surfacing materials for furnishing, interior design and architecture,” says Paul McDowell, MD of MCD Marketing for DuPont® Corian® in the UK and Ireland. www.corian.co.uk / www.deepcolour.corian.com

Dallmer Floor Drains Prove Their Fitness At easyGym

Dallmer has supplied its stylish CeraLine shower channels for a chain of popular private fitness clubs stretching from the capital to the Midlands: being specified for their high discharge rates and excellent installation characteristics as well as their attractive appearance: proving their all-round fitness for purpose. The easyGym operates 10 venues created by the group, which had previously spread its wings from airline flights to budget hotels. The Fulham gym, with five female and five male shower cubicles, is one of the latest venues to be refurbished. Dallmer was able to supply the CeraLine W2000 units so that they could be finished on site. This latest contract was carried out by main contractor, Lovebuild. Work was completed on schedule, in June, with the design of the rugged, stainless steel and polypropylene drainage channels helping to speed both the plumbing connections and the laying of the floor tiling. The two metre long sections of channel feature sanded flanges to ensure a secure bond with the under-tile waterproofing layer; while the height adjustable legs facilitate millimetre accurate levelling. As in this instance the CeraLine is normally aligned with the wall of the shower area to remove water effectively from the surrounding floor surface. In fact with water filling to a depth of 20 mm around the CeraLine W2000, the hydraulic design of the Dallmer channel offers a flow rate of 1.4 litres per second compared to just 0.8 for standard channels. The CeraLine W2000 can also be laid with temporary blanking plates while the waste water connection is made using a ball-jointed side outlet which is adjustable from 0-15 degrees. A spokesperson for the project team commented: “Dallmer’s CeraLine W2000 channels are ideal for locations like the easyGym changing rooms, where clients expect the facilities to look their best. The CeraLine is simple to work with when positioning and laying the tiles up to their sides, while they also remove water very effectively and are easy to keep clean. www.dallmer.com

Founded in 1683, the Ashmolean Museum is the most significant museum of art and archaeology in the UK and welcomes more than a million visitors each year.

Oxford based flooring firm, ACH Flooring, regularly recoats the original herringbone floors in the City’s Ashmolean Museum with Bona Mega. Cleverly formulated to use oxygen as a crosslinker, Bona Mega delivers the performance of a two component lacquer in the convenience of a one pack product and is designed to offer high wear and chemical resistance in domestic, commercial or public environments. A sustainable, NMP free lacquer, Mega provides the museum’s maintenance team with a durable, easy to clean surface. Bona Cleaner and Bona Polish are used for ongoing maintenance of the floors.

ACH’s Kevin Smith said “We have been using Bona lacquers since the 1980s when the company’s core products included Pacific One and Pacific Stong. Today we like using Bona Mega for commercial and domestic projects because of its fast drying times, it has no smell, and for the finished look. Also our mops and brushes can be easily cleaned. We’ve been using it now for many years and have never had any problems with it.”

The museum team wanted a soft sheen to the surface so Kevin recommended using one coat of Bona Prime Classic followed by three coats of Bona Mega Silk Matt to achieve this. Bona Mega is available in four sheen levels including Extra Matt that combines a hard wearing surface with a very natural, almost ‘invisible’ finish to the surface. Bona’s technical team is available for support on site or over the telephone to assist you with your wood flooring project and to ensure the surface meets your client’s aesthetic and performance criteria. Alternative Provision Academy Adopts Coxdome Enlightenment

One of the first Alternative Provision Academies to be opened anywhere in the country, set up to offer youngsters with a variety of issues fresh education opportunities not available to them through mainstream schools, has undertaken substantial refurbishment work featuring the installation of rooflights and barrel vaults from Jet Cox. The project at the Links AP Academy in St Albans, Hertfordshire, which was successfully completed earlier this year by York based T.A. Roofing, involved the removal of leaking and thermally inefficient existing glass rooflights from toilet blocks: replacing them with triple skin polycarbonate units from the Coxdome Trade Range. Several of these rooflights featured either trickle ventilation or Vent Axia extract ventilation units. Then teaching and circulation areas to the school benefitted from the installation of triple skin Jet Cox Barrel Vaults up to 10 metres in length; admitting ample natural daylight to encourage a feeling of well-being as well as cutting down on electricity usage. In total there were seven Barrel Vaults installed, all 860 mm wide. The first of these was 6565 mm long, while there were four at 8210 mm long, with the final pair reaching 9850 mm in length. The 23 Trade Range Rooflights, meanwhile, included 15 which were 700 mm square, with a further eight measuring 700 x 1500 mm. The Jet Cox Barrel Vault, from their recently expanded bespoke range, is a self-supporting structure, which can span up to seven metres and is custom made using polyester powder coated, aluminium components, while the glazing options range from four-wall, multiwall polycarbonate to quadruple skin solid polycarbonate. They are supplied as a kit of parts for ready assembly on site, while the relatively low loads imposed ensure existing roof structures do not require strengthening. Coxdome further offers a choice of upstands or kerbs manufactured in impact resistant U-PVC to simplify installation for roofers and general builders; while they also contribute to improved thermal performance. In this case, higher than normal upstands were created to allow for future over-laying of the existing felt water-proofing with a new system incorporating an additional thickness of insulation. www.jet-cox.co.uk

Historic Welsh Abbey Gains PV Solar PowerTintern Abbey is the best preserved medieval monastery in Wales, and even though the abbey itself is open to the skies, the gift shop urgently needed a new roof. Converting a solution to bring the building into the modern age, the roof was replaced with a Bauder roofing system along with their innovative and environmentally friendly photovoltaic (PV) offering, SOLfixx Plus.

This unique system allows for web-based monitoring of the individual PV modules, effectively identifying any irregularities and increasing output by up to 25 percent. This is particularly beneficial for use on partially shaded

roof areas, like the one at Tintern where nearby trees cast a shadow over the PV area but cannot be removed due to preservation regulations. Without the SOLfixx Plus software in place this would have had a detrimental impact on the system’s overall performance.

Due to the historical significance of the abbey and its surrounding landscape it was also important to the client, Cadw, that the PV system did not create a distraction

from the building itself; and the low profile of the SOLfixx modules, which are set at a 100 angle, made sure this was not an issue.

The original waterproofing was stripped before being replaced with the premium quality bituminous Bauder Total Roof System, which included a highly efficient PIR tapered insulation. Roof areas totalling 630m² were then fitted with 57 PV Modules, enabling the abbey to generate at least 14.05 Megawatt Hours of solar power each year. The remarkable simplicity of the installation meant that the Bauder approved contractor, J Randall Roofing, could install the entire PV array in just one day to the exact specifications given by the client and under one all encompassing roof and PV guarantee.

Andrew Swan, Building Conservation Engineer at Opus, explained his personal delight with Bauder’s bespoke roofing and PV solution, “The Bauder SOLfixx PV system was chosen for its limited aesthetic impact, penetration free installation and because it’s extremely light weight. The Bauder design team were responsive to layout changes required once the works commenced on site, ensuring the maximum possible output was achieved from the roof space available.” www.bauder.co.uk

2014 sees Essex Safety Glass have a renewed focus in its attentions towards its Solarchromic Climate Control range of glass. In a climate with increasingly extreme weather at each end of the spectrum and an economy of increasing energy costs, people are looking for new ways to improve building efficiency whilst keeping costs down. By minimising solar heat gain during the summer and maximising it during the winter, Solarchromic glass maximises the efficiency of a buildings temperature control, in turn keeping down energy costs. With its electronically controllable tint, the glass reduces a building’s energy consumption, lowering its impact on the environment it acts as an increasingly sought-after design feature. Available in manual or automatic control, panels can also be controlled individually or as a multiple panel system. This makes it ideal in any situation where excessive solar heat gain is likely to be an issue – for example, large facades, atria,

This can also be coupled with ESG’s range of LCD privacy, security or fire resistant glass products for a total glass solution.Scott Sinden, Managing Director of ESG, comments: “With the introduction of BIM, more focus is placed upon the efficiency and running costs of a building over its life span with architects and designers continually looking for ways to improve both of these. Solarchromic climate control glass reduces solar heat gain in the summer and trapping it in the winter, eliminating the need for air conditioning and lowering the use of heating. This significantly reduces the overall running costs of a building.” For further information, please visit www.essexsafetyglass.co.uk/solarchromic/

GEZE Pod Is The Perfect Solution For Places For PeopleA gloomy unappealing entrance at The Pavilions in Preston has been transformed with the installation of a light, spacious and draught proof curved lobby from GEZE UK, the UK’s leading manufacturer of door and window control systems.GEZE’s Slimdrive SC curved sliding automatic doors were specified by architects Summers-Inman to create a stunning focal point and welcoming entrance in the extended reception at the Places For People Group’s headquarters. The property management firm commissioned the entrance as part of the refurbishment of its Preston offices. The spherical shaped lobby is designed to maximise space and light and features two sets of automatic bi-parting curved sliding glass doors. As well as aesthetics, one of the primary aims of the project was environmental control; a key benefit of a lobby is that it maintains air temperature providing a comfortable environment for staff, while meeting the highest efficiency standards.Places For People also wanted to control access to the building so the outer doors allow visitors into the lobby, while the inner doors are activated by the company’s reception staff. Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK, explained that Summers Inman chose an elliptical entrance because it provided the perfect solution for access control. Kaz said: “Summers Inman wanted to create an unusual and stylish entrance, but one that would also be both modern and practical. Installing curved doors can increase the size of the entrance by up to 40 per cent compared to sliding doors, making them ideal for entrances with controlled access, as visitors are able to enter the lobby area yet don’t feel cramped.” The entrance was specifically designed to complement the shape of the building, which is angled with the entrance positioned at its heart, as well as allowing for pedestrian traffic flow. The doors and leaves are formed from GEZE’s ISO Slim

profile sections and powder coated in RAL 5013 cobalt blue and glazed with 10mm clear laminated safety glass. In addition, glazed side screens are positioned on each door. Both sets of doors are powered by GEZE’s energy-efficient Slimdrive SC, a curved automatic door operator which is both sleek in appearance and extremely quiet in operation. Part of GEZE’s popular Slimdrive range, the operators are just 7cm high so they can be mounted almost invisibly, making them the ideal choice for this stylish new entrance. They have also been designed and tested to meet the requirements of all relevant standards and regulations, including Building Bulletin 93, Approved Documents B and M, as well as assisting with the vigorous demands of the Equality Act.Speaking about the new entrance, Dan Tipping, Building Surveyor at Summers-Inman said: “As well as looking dated the original reception had manual doors meaning staff had to get up to let visitors in, and it was cold in winter and hot in summer. The new circular lobby has created a stylish modern entrance that compliments the design of the extension and perfectly meets the company’s needs.”For more information about GEZE UK or the Slimdrive SC curved sliding automatic doors visit www.geze.co.uk or call 01543 443000.

Brio’s Zero Clearance On Single Run Sliding Doors

Brio, the leading architectural sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer, has developed a wide range of hardware for exterior and interior sliding timber doors that enable architects and specifiers achieve their vision.

Floor to ceiling sliding doors and shutters are increasingly popular in residential homes, commercial offices and retail fit-outs creating in-built flexibility for how the space is used.

However, floor to ceiling doors can present unique challenges when it comes to the sliding door hardware, and has led Brio to design and manufacture its Single Run Zero Clearance range delivering clearances of 2.5mm between the track and top of the door.

Brio’s extensive Single Run hardware, ideal for floor to ceiling straight sliding timber doors, comes with Zero Clearance option offering a more streamlined finish compatible with today’s uncluttered minimalist interiors.

The Zero Clearance option, available across Brio’s Single Run 80 – Single Run 250 product portfolio, successfully achieves the modern look with hardware discreetly hidden from view.

With no hanger plates or screws protruding above the top edge of the door, Single Run Zero Clearance has been designed to achieve clearances of 2.5mm between the track and the top of the door. And, the new spring loaded guide and bottom rail can also be concealed within the bottom edge of the door thereby extending Zero Clearance to floor level.

“The new Zero Clearance option has already proved popular with architects and specifiers as only 3mm clearance is required between the top of the door and the track. The track can be installed into the ceiling so the door looks as though it is floating as the hangers are difficult if not impossible to see. It is a very aesthetically pleasing effect,” says David Newton, General Manager at Brio UK.

The popular Brio Single Run range was designed for use on interior and exterior sliding shutters and doors in residential or light commercial settings. The application caters for any straight sliding top hung system from room dividers to

agricultural and industrial doors – from 60kg to 650kg. The system is suitable for one panel sliding to one side or two panels bi-parting on a single run of track. Panels can also slide parallel to one another making Single Run suit just about any application.

All Brio Single Run systems offer quiet finger-tip control through the combination of track profile, precision bearings and appropriately tyred wheels.

“We are a global company focused on bringing adventurous ideas to life, converting the conceptual thoughts of our customers into exciting reality and I sincerely believe the Brio range of quality, well-designed product bears this out. We are a solutions company and a world leader in design and quality,” concludes Newton.

Glassolutions Meets Demanding Glazing Spec At Wembley Park’s London Designer OutletHigh performance glazing from GLASSOLUTIONS features in London’s new £100m London Designer Outlet complex at Wembley Park which boasts the largest catchment area of any shopping centre in the UK. The demanding glazing specification delivers optimum solar control, high light transmission and thermal efficiency as well as meeting exacting performance standards for anti-vandalism, acoustic efficiency, strength and safety. Opened in October 2103, the 350,000 sq ft London Designer Outlet features brand-leading retailers including Nike, Gap, M&S and Clarks and houses a nine-screen Cineworld alongside a strong restaurant line up. It serves a catchment of 10.4million people within a 60 minute radius of its North London location. Owned by Quintain Estates and Development Plc, the complex was designed by Leslie Jones Architects. Using glass from GLASSOLUTIONS, Facades and shopfront specialists DML Group completed the £2.5m glazing fit out for main contractor John Sisk & Son on budget and on schedule. Single-glazed shop fronts feature 13.5mm heat-strengthened clear SGG Stadip Protect Planidur Planilux glass. Two-ply lamination provides anti-vandalism and anti-bandit performance with units withstanding loads of 1.5 tonnes to ensure public safety. The glazing cuts out 67% of the sun’s heat energy whilst allowing 60% of the sun’s light into the building. Double glazed units comprise outer panes of 6mm SGG Securit Cool-lite SKN165ii and inner panes of 13.5mm SGG Stadip Protect Planidur Planilux with a 14mm 90% argon filled cavity to provide a u-value of 1.1.

Both double glazed units and single glass shop front deliver a sound reduction of 37Rw dB for ambient noise and 33Rw dB for road traffic noise.

Says Glassolutions’ area sales executive, Ian Snow, who liaised with Drawn Metal Limited prior to installation to ensure the exacting glazing specification was met: “This is a major landmark building, prominently in the public eye, and glazing is both a strongly functional and aesthetic feature of the design so it was vital that it performed to the highest standard. DML are vastly experienced in this kind of high profile complex scheme. With our design and development pedigree and our track record as part of one of the world’s leading building components businesses – Saint-Gobain – GLASSOLUTIONS was ideally placed to provide the optimum performance glass products on this prestigious scheme.”

Completion of the 70 store and 20 restaurant London Designer Outlet earlier this year marked the end of the first 1.8m sq ft phase of Quintain’s 8.5m sq ft mixed use Wembley Park development. It is one of a number of recent high profile projects for GLASSOLUTIONS in the capital including retrofit at 123 Victoria Street, fenestration at Mount Pleasant sorting office, Mace Group’s headquarters in Farringdon and first fix at the Olympic velodrome. www.glassolutions.co.uk

Cantifix worked with Dust Architecture and PVA Developments on this townhouse in Clapham, designing and installing a glass enclosure that extends out from the kitchen at the rear of the property. Access to the garden is provided by a set of minimally framed SkyFrame doors, which glide open across the fixed glass. The doors meet at the corner of the enclosure, and open without any supporting post – allowing an unbroken view, and a seamless transition from inside to out.The bottom framing of the doors is concealed below the finished floor, and above the doors is a set of vertical glazed panels - back painted to hide the top of the doors. This allows for an elegant, completely glazed appearance – and gives the structure a feeling of lightness.Alongside is a second glass enclosure, which includes a structurally glazed roof of over 6 metres in length. This roof runs along the length of the room to meet an angled panel of vertical glazing - drawing in plenty of natural light, and opening up the entire back of the house. www.cantifix.co.uk

Osmo Protects Inside And OutAn extension to a residential property in Buckinghamshire highlights the diverse range of wood finishes from Osmo and how these eco-friendly products provide outstanding protection and aesthetically pleasing results both internally and externally.

Built in the 1980’s, this four-bed detached home had an unfortunate north facing patio, which, due to lack of sunlight was rarely used. With the prospect of a promising summer, the homeowner decided to make the most of the patio area by erecting an extension and extending the kitchen, utilising the unused space.

Jeffrey Powell Associates was the architect for this project and designed an oak framed extension. To ensure the timber would be protected against UV rays and eliminate algae and fungal decay, two coats of Osmo’s Oak UV-Protection-Oil was applied to the frame, door and windows. By absorbing into the oak, the finish allows the surface to remain healthy and elastic, preventing it from drying and becoming brittle. As well as protecting the wood, it provided a satin-matt, clear finish which creates a rustic appearance which highlights the benefits of having wood installed, and fits in nicely with the rest of the property.

“We understand that wood can start to look grey and tired if not treated correctly” commented the homeowner. Despite this, we were still really keen to use the material for the extension but understood it meant that we had to have a high quality finish applied to protect the material. At the same time, we didn’t want the protective layer to detract from the rustic appearance that wood provides. The Oak UV-Protection-Oil ensured all of our requirements were met.”

Protecting the wood internally was just as important on this project. Osmo’s renowned Polyx-Oil range was used on the oak frame and on the floor. Polyx-Oil Tints Raw is a lightly tinted finish that provides an original, untreated appearance for wooden surfaces. It not only creates a sought-after look, but also protects the wood’s surface.

This finished provided the internal oak beams with a fantastic rustic look. Polyx-Oil was also applied to the flooring. Providing a water resistant, hardwearing surface, any mud or rain that is brought in from the garden, can simply be wiped away.

The extension included a newly kitted out kitchen. The work surfaces were treated with Osmo Top Oil to accentuate the woods natural colours and grains. Resistant to all common kitchen spillages and cleaning materials, it provides and easy to clean and water repellent finish. The new interior doors were treated with Osmo Door Oil. Creating a durable micro-porous finish, which is also water-repellent and non-abrasive, Door Oil will not crack, flake or peel. Both the Top Oil and Door Oil created a glossy finish where applied.

“After having the Osmo products applied externally, and being impressed with the quality, we decided that we wanted to stick with its range of products internally as well” continues the homeowner. The finishes have retained the original colour and grain of the wood, something which was incredibly important to us. Not only are we happy with the finishes at this point, we have been advised that as long as we maintain the surfaces, the finishes will remain in top condition for many years to come.”

Finally, Osmo Wood Wax Finish Creativ Snow was applied to all interior skirtings. Requiring only one coat, Wood Wax Finish Creativ was quick and easy to apply throughout the extension, providing a resistant, durable finish. Designed to add colour to wooden materials, it is the great at adding a personal touch to the selected areas in the kitchen.www.osmouk.com

Zip Portable Reverse Osmosis Unit Produces Amazing Quality Mineral Water - Just Plug In And Go!

This versatile eco friendly r.o. water filter needs no plumbing, so is ideal for rental properties or those on the move. It can be used anywhere that there is a power supply. The system can provide up to 280 litres per day and holds 2 litres of purified water when full. The beauty of the ZIP portable reverse osmosis system is that it produces zero waste. The system produces a 50% recovery rate, which means that for 2 litres of water, you will get 1 litre of purified water and 1 litre of concentrate (the unpurified water). However, because the unit uses a patented recirculation system and no connection to the drain, the system produces zero waste, but instead, the remaining concentrate water is stored and can be used for washing, watering plants or other non-drinking uses. The ZIP unit produces pure water then adds just the right amount of minerals for good health. The unit comes with an intuitive single dial for all functions plus an indicator light for instant system status, including an indicator light to let you know when the filters need changing. www.aquatiere.co.uk

Timóleon And Alpha-Innotec Link-Up Right For RHI

The UK’s carbon reduction targets and the recent extension of the Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) to include domestic properties have underlined the benefits of heat pumps, and are also both embraced by the announcement of a new collaboration between Timóleon and one of Europe’s best known ground and air source specialists. The manufacturer of the Hydronik range of underfloor systems has become the sole UK distributor for Alpha-InnoTec: referred to as “Die Warmpumpen-Spezialisten” - or the “The Heat-pump Specialist.” Importantly, underfloor heating loops are accepted as enabling heat pumps to deliver their optimum performance due to lower return flow temperatures, which also allow users to receive the best returns in terms of RHI payments. This latest launch means

that Timóleon is able to deliver a full selection of renewable technologies under what the company terms its Total Indoor Environment package. The philosophy being to integrate the best available technologies in a fully complementary manner. The Alpha-InnoTec heat pumps will therefore be promoted and installed alongside solar thermal systems – including collectors and storage cylinders – whole house ventilation systems and heat recovery systems; making Timóleon a one-stop shop for heating and hot water excellence. The LWD 70A/SX is a top performing air source heat pump offering an independently verified COP of 4.35, and which will attract an RHI payment of 7.3 pence per kW hour.Significantly, it will produce hot water at temperatures of up to 700 centigrade, making it suitable as a direct replacement for conventional gas boilers. Qualifying for the higher 18.8 pence per kW hour rate of payment, the SWC 120S and SWC 140S ground source heat pumps incorporate components such as the brine expansion tank, circulator and safety devices, while manifolds and ground arrays are also available. Both the air and ground source models are MCS approved and demonstrate simplicity of installation with accessible components and easy to commission controls. In addition to installing these models in a cascade arrangement, Timóleon and Alpha-InnoTec can assist clients having any type of property or project to achieve the ideal alternative heating and hot water package, attracting RHI payments for up to 20 years and drastically cutting carbon emissions. www.hydronik.co.uk

Yorkon Off-Site Solution Used To Construct A New Academy Building To Accommodate Increasing Demand For School PlacesAn Ofsted ‘outstanding’ academy in York has used a Yorkon off-site building solution from the Portakabin Group to construct a new teaching facility to help address the rising demand for school places in the area.

Archbishop Holgate’s School was founded in 1546 and was the city’s cathedral school. It is now an oversubscribed co-educational academy for more than 1,000 11 to 18 year olds. A new building was required to accommodate an additional 230 pupils following a reorganisation of secondary school provision in the area and to address the significant growth in the local school population. Numbers in year 7 groups are set to increase by 20 per cent by 2016 and demand for the sixth form has risen rapidly in the last four years.

The two-storey scheme was built off site by the Portakabin Group, working with consultants LHL Group. Off-site construction allowed the building to be delivered during term time with much less disruption to the day-to-day running of the school than a site-based solution. The steel-framed modules, delivered with building services and internal partitioning, were installed in just three days, and the project was handed over just 12 weeks after the modules arrived on site, to allow earlier occupation by the school.

Commenting on the choice of a Yorkon solution, John Stone, School Manager at Archbishop Holgate’s School said, “Following a reorganisation of secondary school provision in our area, we were expecting a significant increase in pupil numbers, so speed of construction was a critical factor in our decision to use the off-site approach. The tight deadline we had for completion and occupation just wasn’t achievable with site-based construction, which could have taken up to two years. We needed to achieve the balance between cost, quality and time. Having visited the Portakabin production centre in York and a completed Yorkon project, we were really impressed with the high quality finish.”

“We now have a fantastic learning environment and our staff and students are absolutely delighted with the new facility. I would wholeheartedly recommend a Yorkon solution to other schools, particularly those needing to urgently address a shortfall in places. We have already had a number of visits from other schools wanting to see our superb new teaching facilities at first hand, and they, too, have been very impressed by it.”

The building was designed to create a statement and to reflect the contemporary appearance of the sixth form centre. Architectural features include an overhanging pitched roof which forms an entrance canopy; full height glazing to the front elevation; brick cladding around the base of the building complements the adjacent brick buildings, and the external façade is finished in the school’s distinctive corporate colours. Multi-coloured infills to the lower sections of the windows add further interest and a strong identity for this latest addition to the school campus.

Facilities in the new building comprise a dance and drama studio, 11 classrooms for the English Department, offices, reception, staff room, store and plant rooms, toilets, lift with disabled access, and an IT suite with a glazed partition.

The Portakabin Group’s Yorkon building solutions offer unrivalled aesthetic flexibility and give building designers, contractors and occupiers the benefit of thousands of configurations and permutations to meet almost any design brief, site and building footprint.

The approach is highly sustainable because it reduces the number of vehicle movements and work on site, and there are fewer internal columns to facilitate space planning and any future reconfiguration required to meet changing local needs.

High Capacity Drainage For New Gateshead Riverside Bus DepotThe new £8.5m Gateshead Riverside Bus Depot at Dunston is the centre piece of the Go Ahead Group’s two-year £30m investment in Go North East bus network. Located on a brown field site formerly occupied by the Dunston power station, the new facility covers 5.75 hectares.

The 326m² (3,500ft²) Gateshead Riverside Bus Depot building is a servicing and fuelling centre used by over 160 Go North East buses, 24 hours per day and seven days per week. 145 buses can be washed and re-fuelled on site overnight. Located off Mandela Way on the South bank of the River Tyne, the new depot building is surrounded by a concreted parking area for buses and staff cars, so effective surface water drainage was a major consideration for designers Portland Consulting Engineers Limited to ensure efficient all-weather operation.

Hauraton supplied 800 metres of their RECYFIX® HICAP® 300, high capacity drainage channels. They were installed in seven runs by ground worker Joyce Drainage Limited, to remove surface water so allowing the Depot to remain

open even under severe storm conditions. The large capacity of the HICAP® runs meant a drain area of up to 10,000m² was achieved with just one gully outlet. The RECYFIX® HICAP® 300 channel runs installed at the Depot accept a water volume of 137,120 litres. The scheme greatly reduced excavation costs and the length of underground pipe-work required. Each one metre channel unit weighed only 23.4kg, so they were easily manipulated into their final position on site.

Factory fitted with 14mm slotted ductile iron inlets, the channels comply with a loading Class of F900 so can easily take the weight of a double-decker bus. Importantly, once installed the complete system is highly resilient to the twisting forces imposed by bus wheels.

Tim Connolly, Hauraton’s Sales and Marketing Director for comments about the project; “We are pleased that the new Gateshead Riverside Bus Depot has been such a success and based on similar projects, we are confident the drainage scheme installed will provide many years of efficient service”. Howe Green Has Historic Restoration Covered At Manchester CathedralHowe Green’s heavy-duty 7500 Series stainless steel access covers have been installed at Manchester Cathedral as part of extensive reordering works commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Manchester Cathedral. Architecturally, Manchester Cathedral is modern by Cathedral standards and was built up around the mediaeval Collegiate Church by the Victorians. In the late early and mid 19th Century, the original ledger stones were replaced with concrete and a network of copper pipe acting as an early form of in-floor heating. Heating the Cathedral from the floor was essentially the same method used over 150 years later but with only 60%

of the heating pipe work working in recent years, a little intervention of the earthly kind was needed to make the facilities fit for the 21st century. Specialist architects Lloyd Evans Prichard planned and implemented the project, overseeing a painstaking excavation

process, the removal of the old antiquated heating system and subsequent installation of a new network of mechanical and electrical chambers across the entire body of the main Cathedral building, including its Nave, aisles and chapels. As a leading developer and manufacturer of floor, ceiling and wall access solutions, Howe Green’s access covers were chosen to provide reliable yet virtually invisible access to these chambers, for best aesthetics and to ensure easy maintenance going forward. Over 70 of their 7500 Series stainless steel access covers were made, each to a bespoke size and specification to fit precisely with new Burlington Stone slabs being installed. Several multipart covers were needed too, the largest at 1747 x 853mm mirroring the

dimension of Victorian voids underneath the stone floor. Multiple frame and cover sections ensured the frame weights met HSE manual handling requirements. On a more unusual note, Howe Green also designed a special cover grating to allow air supply to the blower working the bellows of the Cathedral’s remarkable organ; famously damaged in a series of bombing raids during the war but repaired, maintained and used to this day. All the stainless steel access panels supplied were designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, without any detriment to strength or quality. Fitted quickly and unobtrusively into all types of hard floor finishes, the installation of the floor access panels allowed work on site to flow smoothly with the covers sitting 100% flush with the floor with no risk of slips or trips.

But in such a historic and prestigious building, the decision to use Howe Green access covers was not just about practicality; it was also essential that the access panels blended in seamlessly with the floor to achieve the required aesthetic. “We were delighted to have been involved with this project,” said Richard Centa, Howe Green’s Sales and Marketing Director. “ The appearance of a completely continuous floor was achieved, despite the huge network of mechanical and electrical chambers underneath it. With such a robust access solution in place, this landmark building will be easier to maintain going forward - and its many visitors will be much warmer!”.www.howegreen.com

Sensitive Solution For Historic Castle

Visitors to Durlston Castle will never feel a chill as they take in the spectacular views of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. Electrical

underfloor heating from Speedheat was chosen to overcome a potential floor height problem in the Belvedere viewing room and two cloakrooms during the £5.5 million restoration of the historic Grade 2 listed building. The restoration of the Victorian castle, now the Gateway Centre for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, involved a mix

of traditional and modern construction methods. Explained Rob Hooker, managing director of main contractor Greendale Construction: “There were many conservation issues that had to be considered. Among them were restrictions on the floor height in the Belvedere and cloakrooms, where underfloor heating was to be installed. “Because the Speedheat system is only 2mm deep, overlaid with a thin latex screed and the final floor covering, there was no noticeable increase in floor height.”Durlston Castle near Swanage is owned by Dorset County Council and is part of the Durlston Country Park and national nature reserve. Among the first visitors to appreciate the comfort of warmth from the floor up while admiring the 360-degree panoramic view from the Belvedere was Princess Anne when she officially opened the castle. www.speedheat.co.uk

Beach-Side Bathrooms

Roca's range of robust yet stylish bathroom products have been used to withstand sandy guests at Twitterings, a high-end beach-side holiday home in West Wittering, near Chichester.

With a contemporary, beach-house style, featuring quirky design touches, such as porthole windows and ‘Sussex-style' weatherboarding, it was important that the bathroom sanitaryware and furniture was functional, but also fitted in with the overall look and feel of the building.

Tony Bradbury, Twittering's owner, explained why Roca was the perfect choice. "With Twitterings' close proximity to the sea and sandy beach we knew that the bathrooms would be a very important part of the house.Roca's products were recommended to us by the architect, Richard Hawkes - he has them in his own home. After a visit to the Roca London Gallery in Chelsea, we found just the right furniture and sanitaryware to go with our beach-house style, which is fairly minimal and uncluttered. We've been very pleased with the quality and look of all the products, and our guests all comment on how great the bathrooms are."

Roca products used include GAP wall-hung WC's and basins, to provide a clean, clutter-free look. L20 mixer taps, save water and energy thanks to built-in flow restriction and Cold Start function, which prevents the boiler from heating water unnecessarily.

TT Admix Specified For Major New Build ConstructionTriton has supplied 3,280 kg of TT Admix, its BBA certified concrete waterproofing system, to a prestigious new build project in West London. The project is a new car dealership situated between the M4 flyover and the site of Brentford FC’s new stadium. The construction comprises a watertight concrete base slab with welded sheet piled walls and a watertight concrete capping beam to provide a Type B integral waterproofing solution to BS8102:2009. On top of the slab is a steel framed structure.

TT Admix was specified following discussions between Triton and main contractors, Harringtons Builders Plc, who were impressed by Triton’s site inspection regime and the company’s ability to cover all aspects of waterproofing, not just watertight concrete, under one technical viewpoint and one warranty. 800 4.1kg bags of TT Admix were supplied on completion of the job, around 120 of which were for the capping beam. The concrete was supplied by Quattro Readymix at a dose of one 4.1kg bag of TT Admix per m3 of concrete. The base slab was completed in three pours and the capping beam completed in four pours. All the construction joints for the watertight concrete slab pours were waterproofed using Triton’s standard detail with Triton TT Waterstop held in place with Triton TT Swellseal Mastic. The installation was inspected by Triton’s team for warranty purposes before any concrete was poured.

The construction joint between the watertight concrete slab and the sheet piled wall was waterproofed in the same way. Triton produced a number of non-standard drawings for this project to fit the customer’s design to show the waterproofing recommendations, including proposals for the sheet piled wall intersection and for the capping beam. www.tritonsystems.co.uk

Walthamstow Blues

A 13-storey hotel next to Walthamstow Central Station, London, has been completed, clad with Nordic Blue Living copper from Aurubis Architectural alongside black brickwork.Located on a prominent town centre site, the 107-bedroom hotel forms a key part of a mixed-use scheme that will also provide new homes, retail space and a landscaped public realm. Designed by Rolfe-Judd Architects, the hotel tower is conceived as a series of vertical articulated masses, differentiated by facades clad either in black brick or Nordic Blue Living 1 copper. Nordic Blue is a factory-applied patina developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. In marine climates, the natural copper patina contains some copper chloride giving it more of a blue colour and this is emulated with Nordic Blue using 100 % brochantite. Another range, Nordic Green, is produced with a hint of iron sulphate yellow, replicating the natural green. With both ranges, the process can be accurately controlled so that, as well as the solid blue or green patina colours, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material, as with the Nordic Blue Living 1 here. The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets. This enabled the vertical long-strip cladding, as used at Walthamstow broken up by horizontal bands at floor levels.Other Aurubis Architectural copper surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’, as well as Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper giving either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment. Copper alloys are also available for architectural applications, such as Nordic Bronze and Nordic Brass – which is now also available pre-weathered – and the innovative Nordic Royal, an alloy with a long-lasting golden colour. www.aurubis.com/finland/architectural

South Staffordshire College Reaps The Benefits Of Reynaers SystemsReynaers Aluminium has supplied a range of systems to South Staffordshire College’s Cannock Campus, helping to create a smart and modern new look as part of a £4.2m upgrade of the premises.

The three storey building at ‘The Green’ is one of two sites in Cannock, which along with those located in Lichfield, Tamworth and Rodbaston, make up South Staffordshire College which offers a range of courses for students in the region.

As part of an overall refurbishment project under the direction of architects Maber, new classrooms have been created along with an impressive glazed main entrance. The original brief was to modernise the facilities to improve and update the overall look and feel of the college for students and staff.

A series of aluminium systems were supplied by Reynaers which have been used throughout the building to achieve the required light, airy and modern look, while at the same time providing a practical and effective solution. These included Reynaers CS 24-SL thermally insulated three-chamber window system, which is renowned for its slim frame and being particularly suitable for the replacement of steel framed windows as it is extremely sympathetic to original designs. Also installed was CS 77-FP, Reynaers’ fire-resistant range, which meets relevant European testing and classification standards.

In addition, Reynaers CW 50 and CW 50-SC curtain walling was specified, which facilities unlimited creativity and maximises the amount of natural light into a building, while offering excellent thermal insulation and acoustic performance. Vision 50 doors also have been selected for their aesthetic appearance and robust operation – in that they are able to stand up to the rigours and frequent use demanded from a busy college application.

Paul Duffy, Sales Director for Reynaers, said: “This contract for South Staffordshire College is the latest in a long line of new and refurbishment projects we’ve undertaken in the education sector and highlights our expertise and knowledge of the necessary requirements for this market, while also making creative and aesthetically pleasing design possible.”

GF Tomlinson of Little Eaton, Derby, were the main contractors with MB Glass Supplies of Chesterfield being the fabricators for the project.

South Staffordshire College offers a range of courses including NVQs, apprenticeships, access courses as well as some higher education courses. An extensive range of topics are available for study; including art and design, beauty, construction, mechanical and electrical engineering, plumbing, performing arts, teacher education and tourism.

Hard Wood Flooring Replaces Carpet In Apartment

A refurbishment project has been completed by Hush Acoustics in apartments in Kensington, London. The client wanted to replace their existing carpet with timber flooring in the apartment but the lease dictated that a change in floor finish was not permitted due to potential sound transmission to neighbouring properties. Hush Acoustics specified Hush Mat 15 as the acoustic underlay, allowing the carpet to be removed and a timber floor to be installed. Hush Mat 15 decoupled the hard floor from the existing floor structure. The floor construction consisted of: Hardwood floor finish 15mm, Hush Mat 15 acoustic underlay, existing timber structural deck and existing ceiling. Sound Testing before and after the works were carried out confirmed that the treatment showed an improvement in both Impact and Airborne acoustic performance. www.hushacoutics.co.uk

Composite Marmox Soundboard Proves Ideal For Conjoined Thameside Apartments

A contractor specializing in underfloor heating systems has made extensive use of Marmox SoundBoards on a challenging project to join two Thameside apartments to create an 11-room property: overcoming significant difficulties in terms of differences in floor level, as well as providing a waterproof and acoustically attenuated subfloor. Gala Climate solutions carried out the work at the Riverside Court building in the booming Nine Elms area of south London. Despite having a modern, framed construction fitted out to a very high standard, there was a significant difference in height between the neighbouring flats due to the fact different types of floor tile had been selected by their respective owners. Wanting to employ as few wet trades as possible within the occupied building, Gala opted instead to utilize two different thicknesses of Marmox SoundBoard across the existing surfaces in order to create a “level playing field” – over which the DEVI electric heating system could be laid. 54 square metres of the 8.0 mm thick SoundBoard were laid across the higher side, while a further 140 square metres of the 12.5 mm completed the

exercise. With the new underfloor heating system installed across the revised room layouts and successfully commissioned, Gala completed its contract by installing a mix of ceramic tiling and high quality timber flooring. Both of these surfaces are, of course, associated with noise nuisance due to their hard nature; often magnifying the sound of footsteps. Thanks to the make-up of the Marmox SoundBoard, however, the occupants of the properties beneath or in adjoining rooms will be effectively insulated from any direct sound transmission. This is because SoundBoard is not simply a tile backer, but incorporates a fully bonded sound attenuation layer, which acts to drastically reduce the vibrations which we then hear as noise. SoundBoard is supplied in sheet sizes of 600 mm x 1250 mm, and in thicknesses of 8.0 or 12.5 mm weighing 1.8 and 1.95 kg respectively. They offer a minimum 17 dB sound reduction and can be specified as part of Robust Detail, Appendix D solution to impact sound transmission. They are readily cut or shaped with a knife to fit any room layout. In addition to their acoustic performance, SoundBoards provide thermal transmittance figures of 0.35 or 0.39 W/mK for the two different options. www.marmox.co.uk

Yeoman Shield Goes Back to School

Yeoman Shield returned to Sutton Academy, a busy school in St Helens, Merseyside, to install a further phase of wall protection. Yeoman Shield HessianEx 2.5mm thick wall protection panels in a vibrant Lilac colour were fitted to the plain plaster walls that were wide open to damage and marking caused by heavy footfall throughout the plaza. Not only do the wall panels protect from costly and unsightly damage but they add colour, warmth and a design interest to what would otherwise be a sterile, cold looking area. Corridors to the science areas which were susceptible to damage, also had the Yeoman Shield HessianEx in the same Lilac colour fitted on to the walls. www.yeomanshield.com

Selectaglaze At The V&AFounded in 1852, The Victoria and Albert Museum is the world's largest museum of decorative arts and design, with a permanent collection of over 4.5 million priceless, delicate and irreplaceable objects and artifacts ranging from ancient times to the present day; from the cultures of Europe, North America, Asia and North Africa.

In recent years the Museum has benefitted from a major renovation programme. The latest phase is currently being undertaken by Wates Construction and involves the demolition of the old Boiler House Yard buildings to make way for the construction of a new underground exhibition space, a revamped open courtyard with cafe and an improved Museum entrance from the newly landscaped Exhibition Road.

However, before work could commence the Board of Trustees of the V&A commissioned acoustic consultants Bickerdike Allen Partners to conduct a study on the noise and

vibration impact of the works to the Grade 2* and Grade 1 Listed offices and galleries bordering the site, which were to remain fully operational throughout the entire build period.

The study concluded that, prior to commencement of these works, it was essential to install acoustic secondary glazing to affected windows in order to provide acceptable working conditions in the offices.

Selectaglaze is the UK’s leading designer of secondary glazing systems with considerable experience of working within Listed and period buildings and has full laboratory test reports for noise attenuation capabilities. The Company was approached by the V&A Estate Office in 2012 to consider possible options and, due to the sensitivity of the project, it was agreed to install samples in two rooms for assessment.

The subsequent specification required the secondary glazing to: “Allow access to the primary windows for general maintenance and ventilation; be sympathetic to the style of existing windows without the introduction of new sightlines; glazing to be at least 6.4mm clear laminated glass” and for the secondary glazing to “achieve a minimum noise reduction of 10dB - over and above the noise reduction provided by the existing windows”.

Based on this brief, and following listed building consent, Selectaglaze was subsequently appointed to build over 60 window frames, in a range of styles. The largest in the Henry Cole Wing were 3.5M high and nearly 2M wide including arched heads. These were treated with heavy duty sash windows coupled to a slim high level, arched fixed panel to ensure a sympathetic match. Each frame is purpose made with high performance seals that not only improve the acoustic insulation but also help reduce the passage of dust and dirt - which is a feature of all building sites. The bespoke frames were fully fabricated off-site, allowing rapid installation and completion ahead of the start of demolition works.

The work has exceeded the Museum’s noise insulation expectations and an added benefit, reported by staff working within the treated areas, is a noticeable improvement in the thermal efficiency of the windows.

Founded in 1966, Royal Warrant holder Selectaglaze’s products are fully tested and assessed for performance and twice yearly quality audits are conducted through the company’s ISO 9001 accreditation with LPCB. An extensive range of literature and guidance notes covering acoustics, thermal performance and added security is offered together with a technical advisory service and a RIBA approved CPD Seminar.

Supporting The Irish Navy With A Microlift 50Kg Combination Service Lift Solution A Stannah Microlift 50kg combination through-car dumbwaiter was the service lift of choice for the safe movement of food and tableware aboard the latest addition to the Irish Navy – the LÉ Samuel Beckett, an offshore patrol vessel dedicated to fishery and maritime protection duties, including search and rescue and vessel boardings.

Servicing the captain and his crew of 45, plus up to 10 trainees, the Stannah Microlift 50kg combination food lift operates over a distance of 2820mm, between the main galley and the ward room and waste disposal room on the upper level. The through-car feature maximises the dumbwaiter’s function at the upper level, bringing dual access to the two separate areas.

To accommodate the space constraints of this singular environment, Stannah manufactured the food lift 50kg to the site specific dimensions of 715mmW x 775mmD. Built by Babcock Marine Appledore in Devon, the LÉ Samuel Beckett was fitted out by leading specialist turnkey marine outfitters, Moss Marine Construction.

Senior Contracts Manager, Steve Bason, comments: “Stannah was able to supply the Microlift 50kg to specific dimensions; and its through-car capability maximised its

function – critical considerations in a singular environment where space was at a premium.”

Supplied in a structure-supported framework, installation took just two days, with the minimum of builder’s work. Driven by a quiet, high-power motor, and finished in brushed stainless steel for hygienic durability, the service lift 50kg features rise-and-fall shutters with interlocked entrances for extra safety during transit.

Installing, owning and operating a Stannah Microlift 50kg combination dumbwaiter helps owners to meet Manual Handling Regulations and improves the venue’s logistics – all with the reassurance of continued product service and maintenance by the local branch of Stannah Lift Services (3 visits per year), part of a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support. www.stannahlifts.co.uk
