NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Volunteers are needed to pursue candidates for the next Board of Trustee election which will be held in November 2012. The only qualification necessary is the desire to serve. Please email Laura Lammers at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer.

Trash Can ReminderResidents are reminded that trash cans should only be set out

on trash pickup days, Tuesday and Friday. Trash set out any day other than trash day is a violation of the deed restrictions and can become a nuisance. Residents should also remove their trash cans from the curb after pickup. Trash cans left in view destroys the neighborhood attractiveness.

Have 2 Ways Out!National Fire Prevention Week

October 7-13, 2012The reality is when fire strikes, your home could be engulfed in

smoke and flames in just a few minutes. It is important to have a home fire escape plan that prepares your family to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds. What if your first escape route is blocked by smoke or flames? Having two ways out is such a key part of your plan. This year’s theme, “Have 2 Ways Out!” focuses on the importance of fire escape planning and practice.

Your home should be a safe haven. Take the time now during Fire Prevention Week to make it fire safe.

Community Wide Garage Sale

The ACIA will hold its annual Community Wide Garage Sale, Friday and Saturday, October 19-20, 2012. The areas participating are Shores, Club Point, Ivy Point, Golf Villas, Estates of Pinehurst, Pinehurst and Pines.

ACIA HAPPENINGS

Work, family obligations, traffic, – there are many things in that keep us from getting to know our neighbors. The practice of sitting on the front step and making small talk, while watching the world go by, is a thing of the past. But the annual National Night Out, which arrives Tuesday, October 2, gives us a very good reason to return to the tradition of spending time with those who live next door or down the street: It’s good for our personal safety.

All residents are cordially invited to be a part of ACIA NIGHT OUT 2012. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

Heighten awareness of the people and occurrences around us;Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime

programs; Strengthen neighborhood spirit. So many wonderful families call Atascocita home. Get out and

meet your neighbors. You will discover common interests and shared experiences. Great neighborhoods are made up of great neighbors.

Crime PreventionIf you leave your vehicle in your driveway, one crime you can

really help prevent is auto-burglary. Thefts from vehicles occur at all hours, day and night. All auto-burglaries generally have one thing in common: something to steal ... something valuable left in the car. And, many auto-burglaries are “crimes of opportunity”; they could have been avoided had simple preventative steps been taken. Auto-burglary prevention involves limiting the criminal’s ability and/or opportunity to commit the crime.

With very little time and effort, you can make a huge difference in your vulnerability to auto-burglary. It generally takes a mere few seconds to secure your valuables, but it will take only a few seconds more for a thief to break in and steal valuables left in plain sight. Car burglaries are, however, one of the most prevalent crimes in the greater Atascocita area and probably one of the easiest to prevent. Take your valuables and lock your car.

Happy Halloween!

The ACIA sponsored the fabulous July 4th parade that so many residents enjoyed and also the Easter Egg Hunt enjoyed by the resident’s children and grandchildren. Many hardworking volunteers contributed countless hours making these events a success. Your help is needed to continue these successful and delightful events. The Social Committee needs volunteers. Just a few hours of your time can make a tremendous difference. Please call Sterling Association Services at 832 678 4500 to volunteer.

Tennis Anyone?ACIA has 4 regulation tennis courts, 2 courts located in

Shores I and 2 courts located in Pinehurst. These courts can accommodate players of all skill levels. Cooler weather is the perfect time to revive your tennis game. The ACIA is looking for volunteers to participate on the Tennis Committee. The fee to obtain an access key has been reduced to $15.00. If you’re looking for a playing partner please volunteer by contacting Laura Lammers at [email protected] or

contact Sterling Association Services at 832 678 4500.Marina/Recreation CommitteeThe ACIA recently completely refurbished our Marina.

These improvements were very costly and should last for many years. Two of the tennis courts were resurfaced a few years ago and the Pinehurst pool decking is scheduled for replacement now that swim season is closed. Recommending these improvements was done by valuable volunteers that gave their time to improve our community. Our recreation areas are our greatest assets and require maintenance to preserve their safe usage and attractiveness. Please volunteer your time to be on the Marina/Recreation Committee. Just a few hours per year can make a huge difference. Please call Sterling Association Services at 832 678 4500 to volunteer.

ACIA HAPPENINGSDead Tree Removal

Trees that are dead, dying, diseased, or damaged pose a significant risk to the people and properties surrounding them. The most common reason why dead or dying trees need to be removed is because they have become dangerous. A dead tree can easily topple over, or its heavy branches can break off and crash onto the earth below. If this tree is located near a home, a shopping center, or some other type of public location, this puts people, structures, and properties at risk. If a heavy branch falls from a dead tree and injures or kills the person below, then the person who owns the property the tree sits on could be held liable.

Homeowners and property owners could also be held financially liable if their trees cause inadvertent damage to cars and other types of personal property. Recently, a Mom and her child in the Kenswick subdivision were killed when a dead fell. There are many trees dead or dying in our area due to the recent drought. After a tree has been dead for 3 months or more, it is too dangerous to climb and the removal itself becomes more dangerous.

CPR TrainingThe AVFD does CPR training and can be scheduled to give

a CPR class to ACIA residents. If we have a group of at least 7 residents, the AVFD will do an onsite class at a location of our choosing. The cost is $50/per person and provides a certificate valid for 2 years through the American Heart Association. The course name is Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED. Contact Sterling Association Services at 832 678 4500 to sign up.
