ATA Report: Sustainable House Day 2

Event Summary

Hosted by the Alternative Technology Association (ATA), Sustainable House Day is a national, not-for-profit environmental event providing an opportunity for people to visit sustainable homes and see first‐hand how to make their own homes more environmentally friendly, comfortable to live in and cheaper to run. Attendees almost unanimously reported that seeing sustainable homes in person was their preferred method of learning about sustainable home renovations and builds. Second to this were face-to-face conversations with the renovators and homeowners, followed closely by conversations with design and/or building practitioners. It is this peer-to-peer sharing of knowledge and skills that makes Sustainable House Day a trusted, vibrant and effective method of sharing sustainable values and practices. On Sustainable House Day, September 17th, 2017, 29,049 visits were recorded at 206 homes across Australia, an increase of 68% from 2016, and the event successfully garnered a significant level of media interest. Sustainable House Day’s media presence is largely attributed to the dedicated efforts of ATA’s in‐house communications team, the media partnership with Porter Novelli, and the support of participating homeowners and local groups. Coverage included television, radio, print and online publications. Over 55% of people attended Sustainable House Day for the first time and 63% of attendees were not members of any sustainability networks prior to the event making Sustainable House Day’s reach critical in reaching a new audience of homeowners and renters. Due to cultural, climatic and sporting events in Darwin, Geelong and Bendigo, in these locations Sustainable House Day was hosted on alternative dates. Including these events, the total numbers of participants is even greater than the “official” attendance. Each of these cities produce independent reports, see page 20 for more information. The CRC for Low Carbon Living came on board to assist with pre and post event surveys. The results were compelling:

• 26% of attendees had already taken action and implemented sustainable design and/or features in their homes

• 62% were planning to include sustainable design and/or features in the near future to their homes

• 82% of participants have already had face to face conversations with family and friends sharing their experience and learning from SHD

• 53% Feel more confident talking to building professionals about including sustainable features in their homes

About the ATA

Sustainable House Day is organised by the Alternative Technology Association (ATA) a not‐for‐profit organisation that exists to enable, represent and inspire people to live sustainably in their homes and communities. Established in 1980, the ATA provides expert, independent advice on sustainable solutions for the home to households, government and industry. The ATA has helped thousands of households save money and reduce their environmental footprint with information on energy efficiency, solar power, rainwater tanks, materials reuse and waste. The ATA has more than 6600 members, distributed across Australia in metro and regional areas, who are active in sustainability in their own homes and communities including the 15 ATA branches across Australia. The ATA’s expertise lies in its technical knowledge, communications capacity and a large knowledge base of sustainable solutions for homes, businesses and communities. The ATA also publishes two magazines, Sanctuary: modern green homes and ReNew: technology for a sustainable future, to inspire people in practical environmentally friendly living.

Sustainable House Day evaluation and impact

Online pre- and post-event surveys were conducted with 2077 participants. Results have been summarised below, with more detailed responses provided on request. Pre- and Post- Event Survey

Demographics:

62% Female and 38% Male.

79.5 % existing homeowners, 5.4 % strata home owner, 14.5% own other residential property (not living here), 10.5% tenant, 2.2% living in parent’s home, 5.6% other.

Impact • 25.8% of SHD attendees had already taken action in including sustainable design, features and

appliances in renovations or builds since attending SHD (within one month)

• 61.9% of attendees indicated they are now planning to include sustainability in their

renovation/build since attending SHD 2017

• 79.65% of attendees believe that sustainable features to your home will increase its market value

Homeowners

There were 206 homes open across the country representing a wide variety of sustainable properties including architecturally built, retrofit, owner-builder, renovated and rented houses as well as gardens in rural, metropolitan and regional areas of Australia. To assist the homeowners in preparing for Sustainable House Day, event organisers provided a number of tools to support them throughout the process. Participating homeowners were given the opportunity to provide feedback on their participation through a post-event survey and 77 homeowners participated to share knowledge and experience about sustainability with others. Summary of results from homeowner’s survey: 96% of homeowners opened their homes ‘to share my knowledge and experience of sustainability with others’, 47% of 2017 homeowners had opened for SHD previously and 97% said that they would recommend other homeowners to open their home for Sustainable House Day. 81% of homeowners would consider opening their home to small groups like schools and community groups throughout the year. 37% of homeowners found out about SHD through the ATA, while 31% of homeowners knew about SHD from attending a previous event. 73% of homeowners found the online submission process ‘Good’ to ‘Excellent’. 89% of homeowners used their PC, 10% a Tablet/iPad and no homeowners reported having used their mobile phones while submitting/editing the home profile page. SHD homeowners continue to show a strong preference to meeting in person both with other SHD owners and attendees and 87% of homeowners stated that they would consider hosting a meet and greet at their house before SHD for other home owners and volunteers. 88% of homeowners rated the event management team as ‘Very Good’ to ‘Excellent’. experiences is very important and often cannot be obtained any other way.”

important to show members of our community how they can reduce their energy usage and thus

reduce their energy costs and make their houses more comfortable, all year round.”

Marketing

A multifaceted marketing campaign which comprised of the event website, email marketing, public relations and social media was conducted during the three-month lead up to the event. This year Sanctuary Magazine Issue 40 was dedicated to SHD 2017, showcasing homes that opened around Australia. Feedback from the attendee visitor surveys provide an indication as to how people learnt about Sustainable House Day 2017:

Website

The Sustainable House Day website was the main information portal for the event and included the capacity for homeowners to submit their homes online as well as for visitors to register online, preview houses, register the houses they wanted to attend, find related evens and to receive event updates. Website statistics

• From July 1 to September 30, 2017 there were 96,787 sessions on the SHD website, with more than

60,248 users and 462,562 page views.

• 61.4% of visitors were new to the website and 38.6% were return visitors

• There were an average 4.78 pages viewed per session with an average session duration of 4.52

minutes

• Most users still access the site via desktops at 51.8%, 28.4% use mobiles and 13.5% via tablets.

• An additional 8,045 users signed up to the registration page since SHD 2016, bringing the total of

registrations to 20,321 since the introduction of online registrations in 2015.

Website Referrals

• Facebook was the top generator of social media referral traffic to the SHD website with 13,826

(94.4%) visitors between the dates of July 1 and September 30, 2017. Instagram (1.8%) and Twitter

(1.5%) Other social media referrals came from Linkedin, Pinterest and individual blogs.

• The top 5 referrals to the website from other websites included: domain.com.au (10.6%),

outlook.live.com (8.3%), sanctuarymagazine.org.au (7.2%), homes.nine.com.au (5.2%) and

ata.org.au (4.5%).

Social media

A social media campaign was conducted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram from existing SHD accounts. The results are as follows: Facebook

• Facebook provided a great level of exposure with a total post reach in excess of 315,000 from

January 1 to October 31st, 2017

• During the above dates the SHD Facebook page gained an additional 589 followers

• Facebook demographics show SHD is predominantly followed by women (68%) aged between 35-

44 years of age (22%) and 45-54 years of age (17%).

Twitter

• We gained 4863 impressions between July 1 and to September 30, 2017

• Twitter demographics show the largest category of SHD followers are females (58%) age range of

followers is 25-34 (47%)

• 75% of Twitter followers are interested in green solutions.

Instagram The SHD Instagram account was set up on 16th August 2017

• SHD Instagram has 579 followers

Registrations on the day

In an effort to make SHD 2017 as environmentally friendly as possible the ATA set up online sign-in forms to minimise paper registrations at homes. We will continue to look at ways to make this event more sustainable in 2018.

E-marketing campaign

SHD event e-newsletters were distributed monthly to 12,677 people on the mailing list up to July 2017. During the period July to November nine dedicated e-newsletters were sent out. By the end of October the mailing list had grown to 19,129 and achieved an average open rate of 35.1%.

Media

For the second year in a row, public relations company Porter Novelli supported Sustainable House Day by collaborating with the ATA’s in-house communications team. Thanks to the team effort, SHD had incredible reach in the lead up to the event, including an international appearance the UK paper The Independent. Below is a breakdown of radio, print, online and social media achieved nationally in 2017 and the potential reach achieved via each outlet. The total reach that we are able to record is 159,520,779. Donations for charity

SHD is proud to announce that donations from gold coin donations and ticket tours raised $12,060.85 from 41 houses going to 36 different charities chosen by the home owners. Details of charities can be found on each individual homes profile pages.

Sustainable House Day (Darwin, Geelong and Bendigo)

In addition to the National event Sustainable House day was held on different days in Darwin, Geelong and Bendigo. Darwin SHD was held on 20th August to coincide with the Darwin Festival. COOLmob were the main

organisers of Darwin SHD and were supported by Environment Centre NT, NT Environment Protection

Authority and City of Darwin.

Five houses opened their doors on the day with 685 visits recorded. They conducted a survey after the

event and found that;

• 94% of visitors were satisfied with their experience

• 76% of visitors plan to adopt new sustainable behaviours due to the event

Geelong SHD was held on 15th October, organised by Geelong Sustainability Group. Ten homes opened and they recorded 1890 visits to those homes on the day. Supporters of this event include Gordon TAFE, Barwon Water, Off Grid Energy Australia, SO’R Construction, Thermostat windows, Little Constructions, Leap Ltd, Go Green Glazing, Homes with Integrity, f2 Design, A&A Worm Farms, Belco Group, Krugers Sheetmetal, Sacred Heart College and Drysdale Harvest Basket. Bendigo SHD was held on 29th October, organised by the Bendigo Sustainability Group. Seven houses opened on the day and they recorded 150 visits. In addition to the homes open they started the day with talks from experts and a mini expo at The Old Church on the Hill. Supporters of this event include City of Greater Bendigo, Bank Australia, Sustainability Victoria and Passive Builders.
