ALABAMA
Another year has passed, and we find our-selves once again gathering to celebrateone of the nation’s most vital industries.
As a trucking executive, I understand the deepimpact the recent economic downturn has hadfor many Alabama trucking related businesses. Most sectors of the economy suffered, and ourswas no different.
But now, as the pendulum begins to swingback in our favor, trucking appears to be on theroad to recovery, and it takes industry leaders likeyou to ensure that growth is sustained.
Of course, we still face many pitfalls thatcould keep us from reaching our full potential asan industry. Major concerns like growing opera-tional costs; changes to key regulation, andmany others stand in our path. Hopefully, yourtime at our meeting will inspire you to build astronger, better trucking industry for Alabama.
There is a great line up of events and speakersscheduled this weekend – interesting people toshare their thoughts and ideas about politics, leadership, and what lies ahead for our greatindustry.
Here are the highlights: On Thursday evening, please join us as we
kick things off at a welcome reception, whichincludes fellowship with your colleagues, familyand friends.
Friday morning we get things going with ourannual business meeting to discuss the obstaclesthat face our industry. Speaker for this event isformer Air Force One pilot Mark Tillman, whoflew President George W. Bush during the ter-rorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
The events and history of that tragic day arewell known, but Mr. Tillman will share his mis-sion of keeping the President of the United Statessafe in the midst of national emergency. Nowretired from service, Mr. Tillman now directsflight operations for a private business in Arizona. You can read more about him on page 14.
Friday Evening please join the ATA Workers’Comp staff and Avizent for heavy hors d’oeuvresand cocktails (This event is open to all conven-tion attendees) in the Pavilion, starting at 5 p.m.
Saturday morning, we will hold our annualmembership meeting, followed by the ATAWorkers’ Comp membership meeting.
Afterwards Speaker of the House Mike Hubbardand Senate Pro Tem Del Marsh will provideinsights and updates from the State House.
That afternoon we will hold our Conventiongolf tournament at the Preserve Golf Club. Thecourse is located minutes from Biloxi, just off I-10 in Vancleave, Miss. If you haven’t registeredfor the tournament, please be aware that space islimited. Be sure to visit the ATA convention reg-istration booth or ask an ATA staff member formore info.
Later that evening, we celebrate the leadershipof current ATA Chairman of the Board Bill Ward.
Bill has done an outstanding job as Chairmanof this Association. He has led by example, donating his time and money to ATA’s manyevents. He also worked to bring the membershiptogether, especially those in the southern part ofstate where his business Ward InternationalTrucks is based. His dedication to making theindustry better, stronger and safer has served uswell, and we are grateful for his efforts.
During the program, we will also honor our2011 Alabama Truck Driver of the Year LawsonTrucking’s Recordo Jackson and will announcethis year’s winner of the H. Chester WebbAward, which is this Association’s highest honorfor a member. Speaker for the event is JeanneRobertson. I promise you, you do not want tomiss her presentation!
Finally, I thank our many Convention spon-sors this year. This has been one of the best yearson record in terms of membership support andsponsorship. As you look through the pages ofthis publication, please make special note of thebusinesses that supported your Convention.Their generosity and commitment to trucking isstrong, and they’re the reason this Associationcan produce such a worthwhile event.

The Alabama Trucking Association is proud to present MarkTillman, former Commander of Air Force One under PresidentGeorge W. Bush as speaker for Friday’s Business Meeting &Breakfast.
Chosen as the nation’s 12th Presidential pilot, Col. Mark W.Tillman (Ret.) served as pilot and commander of Air Force Onefor eight years and was at the controls and responsible for thePresident’s safety during some of the most important nationalevents in recent history.
Most notably, he piloted Air Force One on September 11,2001, keeping President Bush out of harm’s way and connectingthe flying Oval Office to the nation’s first responders. The attackskilled more than 3,000 in Washington D.C and New York andsent the nation into two wars.
“There are all kinds of plans to keep the president safe, emergency action plans, in the event ofnuclear attack,” Tillman told USA Today in an August 2011 article commemorating the tenthanniversary of the September 11th attacks.“Pretty much any major military attack, Iknew exactly what to do with the presidentand where to take him to keep him safe.
“This was different. This was an attackfrom within. We had the president whodidn’t want to follow our plans for anuclear attack, which is hide him, keep himsafe and allow continuity of government.”
Tillman was also the first pilot in historyto fly a Commander-in-Chief into a warzone. His mission was unprecedented:transport the most targeted man in theworld into the heart of terrorism. One mis-take would have left the President open to attack and cost the lives of U.S. service members.
Tillman personally orchestrated and executed the covert operation with flawless success. His plan-ning, done in complete secrecy, allowed for a complete surprise to the world. He would repeat themission three more times thereafter.
Tillman’s distinguished career spans 30 years in the United States Air Force. He was awarded theDistinguished Flying Cross in 2004 and promoted to Brigadier General — the first military lineofficer to receive this honor.
A man devoted to serving his country, this captivating storyteller will give you a first-handaccount of remarkable moments in history.

an early age that business was his passion. While still a student Auburn University, he started his firstbusiness detailing cars for local car dealerships. Today, with more than three decades of experience inrunning a business, he understands the importance of job creation as it relates to the state’s economyand ventured into politics to push for legislation that encourages economic growth and protectssmall businesses.
Just like families and businesses across Alabama have to do, he believes government should livewithin its means and not spend more than it takes in. Tough economic times require making toughdecisions, but he views the state’s challenging budget shortfalls as an opportunity to make state gov-ernment more efficient and accountable to taxpayers.
During his first term as Senate President Pro Tem, Marsh significantly reduced spending by cut-ting his budget 65 percent, and reducing the staff of more than 40 under former leadership down tofour, saving roughly $100,000 a month in personnel costs.
In his former role as Finance Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, Marsh helpedRepublicans win all statewide offices and gain control of the state House and Senate for the firsttime in 136 years.
Marsh grew up in Birmingham, the son of a car salesman. While working toward a degree inindustrial management, he met his wife, Ginger, an Auburn University cheerleader who was bornand raised in Calhoun County. The couple has two adult children, Justin and Christine.

to continue delivering valued services for our members. We are grateful for Bill’s leadership, dedication and commitment to the

Wrapping up the event is humorist Jeanne Robertson. Jeanne Robertson, who speaks to thousands of people annually, utilizesher positively funny style to illustrate that a sense ofhumor is much more than a laughing matter—it is a
strategy for success. Other speakers might be as witty as Jeanne. Some mighteven be as tall. (Barefoot, with her hair mashed down, she’s 6 ft. 2 in. in hersize 11B stocking feet.) But nowhere will you find a speaker so adept at turn-ing personal experiences into funny material.
This Miss Congeniality winner in the Miss America Pageant,“Yearrrrrrrrrrrs ago,” quoting Jeanne, uses her down-home Southern drawlto leave her audiences laughing . . . and thinking about her message.

March 30, 2012
Alabama Trucking Association
Workers’ Compensation Fund Members
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:
Enclosed you will find a copy of the Summarized Audited Financial Statements of the Alabama Trucking
Association Workers’ Compensation Fund for the year ended December 31, 2011.
The Auditors conducted their
audit in accordance with U.S. generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require
the Auditors to plan
and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the fin
ancial statements are free of material
misstatement. Upon the completion of all necessary examination of the eviden
ce supporting the amounts included
in these financial statements and assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by manage-
ment, the Auditors determined that their a
udit provided a reasonable basis for
issuing their opinion. Their opinion
concluded that these financial statements present fairly, in all material respect
s, the financial position of the
Alabama Trucking Association Worker’s Compensation Self Insurance Fund as of December 31, 2011.
These financial statements reflect the Fund has accumulated total p
rofits, net of distributions, of $17,788
,375 set
aside for future retrospectiv
e credits to be refunded as directe
d by State Requirements of the Alabama Department
of Industrial Relations. The total amount of retrospective credits pre
viously distributed back to
participating mem-
bers, since inception of the Fund, is $44,901,395. In addition, the Fund will distribute b
ack $5,394,347 on
January 1, 2012 to respective p
articipating members with their 2012 calendar year renewals.
This report includes the overall operation
s of the Fund which consists of both our Alabama and Cross Border pro-
grams. The claims losses reflected in the Consolidated Stat
ement of Income and Deductions includes loss reserves
which are required to pay incurred but not reported (I
BNR) losses as determined by the Fun
d’s independent
Actuarial firm. In our reserving practices, the Board of Trustees maintains a very conservative appr
oach so that the
Fund is protected from the effects of
irregular occurring claims losses. After having made these year
-end adjust-
ments, the combined overall operating profit for th
e year ended December 31, 2011 is $4,786,792
. With the con-
clusion of the 2011 calendar year, the B
oard of Trustees is pleased to report
that we have continued our long stand-
ing profitable operating performance. The Board wishes to emphasize that i
ts primary goals still remain to protect
the financial integrity of the Fund while returning profits to pa
rticipating members.
In closing, we always wish to take the opportunity to reinforce our loss
control emphasis where we believe the best
approach to curbing increases in your company’s operating expenses is to strive
to maximize your company’s empha-
sis on loss control. To support you in obtaining this goal, w
e have three loss control engineers working in the field,
our staff legal counsel and our website (www.atacompfund.org) dedicat
ed to assisting our participating member
companies in their loss control and safety progr
am efforts. We encourage you to take advantage of these r
esources
at no cost to you and to remember to always Work Safe / Work Smart.
We hope this information will assist you i
n evaluating the strength and quality of our program.
Respectfully,
Kimble E. Coaker, CPA
