THE EAST HAMPTON STAR. EAST HAMPTON. N. Y., JUNE 20. 19S8 The Way It Was... Twenty-Five Years Ago . . . 1943 From The Star, June 17, 1943 Private enterprise has had hard sledding, lately, competing with high wages paid for war work. Locally, preparations for the sum mer busy season have been pretty well hampered by the departure of nearly every boy old enough to get working papers either for the armed forces, of for after-school work at nearby defense areas. . . I hope that East Hampton town ship isn't driven to importing farm labor as they are doing over in Southold. Eight hundred Jamaican Negroes, so the papers say, are com ing to help take care of the crops on farms over that way. . . Army, Navy and Marines: HOW'S FOR A PIPE is the stock question that the natives of the Southwest Pacific islands ask our soldiers, sailors, and marines and according to Pfc Harold King they really mean it. In a letter of May 23 Pvt. King wrote: "Life on this island is not bad at all. Our tents are screened in to Fifty Years Ago . From The Star. June 21, 1918 The East Hampton High School closes today after nine months of steady hard work on the part of the faculty and pupils. War condi tions have even had their effect on the school. Several organ izations have been formed this year by members of the faculty to meet these conditions. Some of these new organizations are the Junior Red Cross and Uplift System, and the Junior Red Cross Auxiliary, all of which have proved very successful, both from a financial and moral point of view. . . Springs: Our truck gardeners have already begun to harvest some of their early vegetables. Peas, beets, onions, lettuce, radishes and spinach have been reported. Five of the “younger generation” of the village made a visit to the strawberry patch of Thomas C. Top ping last Sunday afternoon, and be sides stealing several quarts of ber- keep out those dive-bombing mos quitoes. There is a fresh water river flowing right next to our camp. This place consists of jungles and coconut trees and I have had my fill of coco nuts. “Natives are pretty plentiful and I will never forget the first ones I ever saw. They look at you and then start a little pow-wow among themselves. They look rather queer but they are very nice to the soldiers. “Every time you happen to see one the first question they ask is ‘Have you a pipe?’ Just the other day one happened to come through the camp area and I happened to be in my tent so he stopped in and the first thing he wanted to know was did I have a pipe. I told him I did. He would like to have one, he said. ‘Can you sing,’ I asked him. He never said a word for a few seconds and then all of a sudden he started to sing ‘Springtime in the Rockies.’ His English was very good. When he finished and I gave him the pipe he started to sing ‘For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow.' Was I surprised?” 1918 ries, did a great deal of damage to the plants. Just as they had a nice quantity picked, however, they were taken by surprise by the arrival of Mr. Topping, and they started on a run leaving practically all they had pick ed, and one of the boys even left his hat, which was full of berries. . . A recovery of $303.70 was made last month from the violators of the conservation laws. There were 22 cases reported, and the same num ber of convictions — One for taking trout in closed season, seven for taking fish illegally, two for taking black bass in closed season, three for attempting to take wild geese, one for hunting law violation, one for possessing deer in closed season, two for fishing on posted lands, four for angling, non resident without license. Don’t forget the graduation ex ercises at Clinton Hall tonight. Seventy-Five Years Ago . . . 1893 From The Star. June 23, 1893 It is reported that Robt. Collins has given up the idea of carrying the mail on the Bridge Hampton route this summer. News from Amagansett: While working in the fields on Wednesday L. H. King found an old coin bear ing the date of 1723. A few such finds might make Mr. King a rich man. After being imprisoned ten months, Lizzie Borden is found inno cent of the double murder with which she was charged. It is claimed that farming no longer pays in this section of the country. Has the farmer ever attri buted the cause of the decline of his business to poor roads? Less money expended for horse feed and more money spent upon the improve ment of the highways of the country would have made fatter pocketbooks and healthier horses for the farmer. The poles for the East End Tele phone Company have been deliver ed along the line between this place and Sag Harbor. The wheelmen of East Hampton and Amagansett met at the residence of Geo. Hand in the latter place on Friday night last and organized un der the name of the Montauk Wheel men. Ernest Muchmore was elected captain and vice president; Samuel Grimshaw, secretary and treasurer. A committee was appointed to draw up a constitution and by-laws. The club will meet in East Hampton tonight.
